I moved into the area last year and unfortunately soon after settling in my dog tore his ACL and needed a TPLO surgery. This was his second TPLO surgery in 7 months, so I was extremely upset (as its a costly surgery and the recovery time is a long 6 months) and I was fairly savvy about the process by this point. I do have to say that the surgery price was higher ($4,000) than what I paid for his first TPLO surgery in Florida ($2,800). I do understand that costs vary by market, hospital, and situation. As they are the only vet within 200 miles that does this surgery, I am going to pay more for the specialty. I have worked in rescue for years so I have a fairly good idea of what to expect when it comes to medical procedures and price. Metzger's was very sympathetic to the fact that I had just paid thousands of dollars on a TPLO surgery 7 months prior and that I had just finished up a costly move. They worked with me on the price and got it down to what I felt was a more than fair price. They also treated my dog wonderfully and everyone I encountered was extremely professional and caring. Their facility is clean, state of the art, and their staff is knowledgable. It is a bit more expensive than your standard vet, but the peace of mind knowing my pets are in good hands is worth the few dollars more.

One night this week as we were going through our daily grooming ritual, I felt a lump on my cockapoo that was roughly the size of a walnut. This was in an area where I clean daily and it hadn't been there the night before so I was worried. I called Halfmoon Valley Animal Hospital early the following morning and asked for an emergency appointment for the next day. I didn't even ask for a same day appointment knowing how busy they always are so I was surprised when they offered me an appointment for the same afternoon which I gratefully accepted. They diagnosed an issue their groomer had missed (on both of them), rectified it and crises over. I felt like I received an incredible gift with my dogs being patients of this practice. No matter the issue, regular checkup, medications, or emergency visits the vets, assistants and office staff show professionalism, compassion and patience with each issue. They treat my dogs with genuine kindness and gentleness and the more I depend on my dogs as my service animals the more I tend to forget that they aren't human. Fortunately, they strike a perfect balance and I'm grateful for their services. I have taken my dogs to Big Valley for over 17 years. I never had a problem before. However, they…read morehave a new doctor. After two days of tests performed on our 4 year old golden (during which time we were told the doctor had seen sicker dogs), we were sent home with seven medications and no real information. The vet talked to us over the phone, but did not meet us face to face when we picked up our dog. The vet tech he sent out to speak with us had spent no time with our dog and couldn't answer any questions. We were led to believe his condition was treatable. After two horrible days of forcing meds and watching my dog suffer, he passed away. We were given false hope and deprived of the chance to give our dog a proper goodbye. Since this, we have done some research, and our dog was never going to recover from his illness. If we knew this, why didn't this vet? We will never go back When the vet called for a follow up, after I told him our dog died, he repeated that our dog hadn't been that sick. When is a dog very sick if not two days before he passes away? Unbelievable.

If I could recommend them to everyone, I would. They are always putting the animal first. They explain everything to you, so you know exactly why they are ordering certain tests for your pet. The facility was top notch with clean tile lined indoor pens and two huge outdoor runs with shade, pools, toys, water, whatever pup could want. She was professional, asking all the right questions and requiring all the proper info, like vaccination history, emergency contacts etc. A FAR cry from the other facility we had used the two days prior out of necessity. They were "this your dog? Ok, see you when you get back". Nice folks but a completely unprofessional operation with cut rate facility's for the dogs. Standard wire pens attached to caged runs. No play areas and I suspect minimal contact with the dogs. How it rated 4 star is beyond me. Sweet Dreams was first class. Well, well done.
