Locals and tourists alike can buy daily and weekly newspapers and magazines (a really good selection for such a small shop), wine, beer & spirits, cigarettes/cigars, soft drinks, fresh and frozen veg, frozen meats plus packed meats such as ham and bacon. Pies, tinned foods of all descriptions, household goods such as washing detergents & liquids, candles, matches, soap, firelighters, dusters - you name it, you'll probably find it here. Service is fast, efficient and friendly and the owner, Mr Finlay is what one would call 'a bit of a character- - great fun on a good day! So, if you are holiday in or around Broadford, either B&B or camping, pop into Alton & Finlay and you're sure to find that little something you left at home!

Because I hadn't tried any Scottish sourced beef yet on the trip, I made the mistake of ordering the aged Scottish ribeye and then added on the cracked pepper sauce with whiskey. This was £20 plus £3 for the sauce! The ribeye was cut too thin, to begin with, so wasn't cooked properly by default. The cracked pepper sauce had no whiskey flavor at all. And the overall portion was too small given the price. Another in our group ordered the same thing with the same sauce added. He commented similarly that the portion was small and that the flavor on the beef and sauce was lacking. No whiskey flavor was detected either. Others enjoyed their food. But I should have just stuck with the seafood sampler like everyone else.

As you walk in you are greeted to freshly made bakery, rolls and bread. They have a hot stand which keeps bacon rolls and many pasties warm. They also have a large range of sandwiches and salads. Usual groceries fresh vegetable, meat, tinned goods, frozen items are found here as well. It can get very busy and at times the queues can be known to go far along the aisles, but they move relatively fast. A very handy shop to have as the supermarkets are located out of the town centre.

The staff like talking to each other and sitting through the back ignoring the bell! They also often leave stock in the aisles making it a bit of an obstacle course to try to get to the counters. Later, while on my ferry journey to Stornoway, I decided to look up the Tesco company and learned it was founded in 1919 and had operations outside of Scotland in a handful of countries including Hungary and Ireland. The inside of the store was straightforward to navigate and I got a few produce items, canned goods, and a small container of eggs. The prices were good and check out was simple with friendly workers. Products I bought were in good condition and served as snack and meal items both on the ferry ride to Stornoway and while in the Outer Isles until I replenished my supplies. Produce items and eggs were fresh and flavorful and the canned items and eggs easy to cook with.
