The plus is, it's completely nature's beauty there, with a nice wide stretch of beach and a remote relaxing feel. The minus is, the road to this place is the WORST road I've ever driven in my life. As of Nov 2020, the unpaved portion of Cooks Beach road (like 60-70% of its total length) is full of holes, dips, standing water, and various other lumps and bumps. I recommend parking at the end of the paved area and walking the remainder of about 1/4 mile. I did drive it in a non-SUV but at 10mph, with white knuckles, and hella stress. Come here to relax, but bring an SUV or some sneaks to hike. Once you get to the beach it is crazy pretty, and most of the year, you will be one of very few people there. Like all of the small Middle Township bay beaches, this feels very remote and private. As with its neighbor beaches, you need to drive out through a stretch of marsh to get to it. There are homes on solid ground at the mouth of the road (by 47), but none once the road becomes unpaved. The stretch in between is marshland. Marsh makes for great wildlife but also many bugs, so prep for that in warm months.

Like it's northern neighbor beaches, you need to drive out through a stretch of marsh to get to Del Haven beach, but it is a lot more built up than the little beaches north of it. Unlike in Villas, you can't really park along the street here unless you get one of the 2 or 3 spots right at the beach entrance, and if you don't live beachfront, it is a long long walk to the rest of town here. Thus my 4/5 stars.

Contrary to its name, Poverty Beach offers a sumptuous banquet of riches. From the free street parking on the day I came (Tuesday in July) to the clean bathrooms steps from its entrance to its friendly tag seller. I paid $8 for a day tag; it's $15 for three consecutive days and less daily for longer if you plan to beach it. Being a cape, it's very windy so I put my umbrella away. The waves are strong but there are lifeguards until five daily during the season, like now.

You have to drive through…read moremarshland (great birdwatching here if that's your thing), park in a tiny lot, and walk another 15 minutes down an old road to get to the beach. But you'll be rewarded with said birds (bald eagles, herons, and more), horseshoe crabs, and other wildlife. You'll likely have the place to yourself; we only saw two other wildlife photographers, in the parking lot, in the hours we spent here. There are the remains of a beachwall and a house that was removed about 20 years ago, I'm told. There used to be several houses on this beach--apparently those families are still upset about being displaced. You can see the old fireplace and see how the water is trying to reclaim their foundation. Some creative types have made sculptures out of driftwood and beach debris. But mostly it's just uninterrupted shoreline and nature that you can enjoy in solitude. Tip: the most convenient public restroom is back in Dorchester at the Wawa. I recommend a stop there before your visit to this beach.

Thompson's Beach is similar to Moore's Beach in that it's an isolated location without any homes…read morealong the beach, or anywhere nearby. To access this beach, you must drive to a public parking lot (free), and walk a gravel road through marsh for 0.7mi until you reach the beach. There is a lookout platform built adjacent to the parking lot, with didactic panels giving info on the wildlife. Once you reach the beach, it is very natural, and has some brick and stone fill material dumped there, to prevent erosion. There is also what looks like the ruins of an old building, but no signage to indicate exactly what it was. The beach is a decent size for spending time in the sun and sand, but it's very isolated so if any jellyfish sting or other emergency were to occur, you're a 0.7mi walk (or bike ride) to your car, and then several miles from that to get medical attention. No lifeguards anywhere nearby! So IMO, this beach is best explored in the off-season dressed warmly, with sneakers or hiking boots. Vineland is about a 30min drive from this beach. There are many preserves and hiking trails nearby, along with the Maurice River Township biking trails.

You drive through a bunch of marshland to get to Fortescue, which is both a small town and a public beach. Several restaurants are in town, in addition to other local businesses. They even have a post office! There is ample paved parking (FREE) along the breakwater wall between the sand of the beach and the road. The strip of beach is a decent length, not like those at the large traditional Jersey Shore beaches, but walkable, clean, and free of nature debris, so you can set your gear up there for a day at the beach. Beach fishing happens there all year; anywhere along the bay is super popular with fishermen. No rough surf like is present on the Atlantic side of the NJ peninsula, and unlike the Atlantic side, you can see the sunset over the water here. There are multiple preserves and hiking trails around this town, and bustling Millville is just over 20min away. At the time of this review, it appears there is at least one commercial lodging option to stay in town (in addition to private rentals). Roads are paved and flat, so this is a fun place to ride bikes as well. I have not visited in summer, but with the vast acreage of nearby marsh, I would expect the bugs to be fierce in warm months. Summer crowds may be a factor too. The best time to visit, IMO, is the off-season!

Reeds Beach is a couple of spots along the Reeds Beach road. Like Pierces Point, it has homes…read moresitting over the beach in some spots, so it can be hard to tell where public property ends and private property begins, but the very end of the road is designated parking for visitors (and by designated I mean along the road, but in a clear public space). At this dead end, there is a small body of beach, some large boulders with hand painted graffiti welcome signs, and a small pine barren park "forest" area. No picnic tables or restrooms or anything. Sunsets here are killer, but you need to face the bay and the northern edge as the dead end of the road here is facing north. Views north are very cool, and there is deep water docking to the right of the road there but it's 17 acres of private property (currently for sale at $1M). I visited all of these Middle Township beaches in one day and this is definitely more busy than the others, especially for its size. It a really cool spot and worth a look if only for a short visit.
