By far my least favorite bar in town. The place is far too small and is always way too crowded. If you're looking for a place to not sit and order drinks and maybe get trampled by other people, this is the place for you. Not many people know it, but this used to be a funeral parlor but a wall was put up some years ago behind where the bar is now and they split this place into two businesses. Great selection of beers on tap or in the bottle. The first time I went there in 2002 or so, I had the pizza and after that have tried nothing else as it was amazing. I recomend artichoke and pinenuts on it. Also for a great starter, try the Asiago cheese dip that comes with toasted slices of a mini-baguette to dip into the cheese. We stop here anytime we drive through Elko. They have a good selection of beer of tap and in bottles. The pizzas are really good. They are the right size for 2 or 3 people, have a nice crispy crust, and plenty of toppings. The jalapeno and cream cheese dip is also delicious. KCCO beer! Enough said right? I only bring it up because they were the first in town I found. This is a nice little bar, can't stress little bar enough. This places packs full almost every Friday, to the point of standing room only. I've only had a small portion of snacks here but no complaints to the food. The service has no complaints either never had a hard time getting anything. Bathroom situation, as I told you little bar, so little bar little bathrooms. One holers. An they are in the back so on Fridays I suggest coming in the side door and making your way from there it's a long trek down the middle of the bar from front to back when it's busy. read more

This is kind of a trendy type bar with a great atmosphere and a decent beer selection (15 on tap and a ton more in bottles). I've only eaten here once. They only serve food that can be baked, and I got some spicy chicken tenders. They were decent, but came with nothing but a side of ranch and the portion wasn't huge. The place is not that huge, so it can fill up pretty quickly on a busy night. I will definitely be back to this place for drinks whenever I'm in Elko, but won't likely choose it for dinner again. read more

Stopped in for beer and some pizza. I loved the bartender, she made some great suggestions all around. I went for a fruit beer halfy: Angry Orchard and Shocktop. We had the Mediterranean pizza and some delicious margarita chicken wings. I would go there again for the delightful bartender and the margarita chicken wings in a heartbeat. read more

Great stop on downtown Elko. We had a meat lovers pizza and it was an awesome homemade pizza with plenty of toppings. We also had their fish and chips which were cooked perfect with light batter. Chelsea served up some local beers to top it off. Chelsea was great to talk to. We'll definitely be back if we're passing through again. read more

I don't know what those are people are complaining about. We "found" Stray Dog on New Year's Eve while driving cross country. The bartender was very knowledgeable about the beers and recommended two for us that we both loved. Founder's Scotch Ale - excellent. Sliders - That night they were pig belly and completely delicious. I also ordered the Asiago Artichoke Dip. It was tasty but I didn't love the toasted croutons/Crostini served with it. I'd have preferred nice slices of baguette, but that's just me. Oh, and that bartender that night must also be a chef or the manager. Simply Great Service. read more

Let's be clear up front, this is a bar that serves food......calling it a cafe is definitely a stretch. That said, it wasn't bad. It wasn't great either. I sat at the bar, but there are a few tables too. The place is very narrow, so not a ton of space. It backs to an alley, which actually gives it some charm in a strange creepy kind of way. I almost don't know where to start, but I will try to keep it to the facts. I will however say that this is the WORST bar you can go to in Elko. After first walking in you have to try to fight a way to a cramped table in an incredibly small venue. After getting in and getting seated I was not approached by any of the staff, so there customer service was already at a loss. The only good thing I have to say about the Stray Dog is the selection. They have a great variety of drinks. Even though they have a good selection, I was shocked to find out how much it cost for my drink. Not to mention the person I was with was definitely overcharged for a drink that was very poorly made. Now I will say one of the biggest reasons that the Stray Dog got a "Black Spot" is because they tried to double charge me more than once. The first time I went in to do a review I had purchased a few drinks with cash and then started putting them on a tab to pay with my credit card. When the waitress brought my receipt it had all the drinks I had already paid for with cash on my tab. So they double charged me! Not to mention my card had ALREADY been charged before I could verify that it was right. I attempted to politely correct the waitress and she was very indignant and started to argue with me on the fact that I had already paid. Even after getting the correction done, she charged my card again for the correct amount and told me the other charge was voided but could take up to 2 weeks to come back into my account! Why she didn't just refund the difference is beyond me, although I am fairly sure after my experience it was because she was incompetent. Despite the fact I usually like to keep it to one review, I went back to get a 'second opinion'. They started me up a cash tab this time, and after everything was done I went to pay with a hundred dollar bill, my tab was only $70. So after paying I waited for my change... and waited... and waited. 20 minutes later I went up to the bar to ask about my change come to find out they just 'assumed' that it was a tip and had no intention to give me back my money! I eventually got my money back, after having to argue yet again. I am just happy you read this review hope it will prepare you for the scam artists at the Stray Dog. Agree that this is probably the most "normal" place in Elko to just hang out and have a good draft beer. Went on a Friday on my way through town. Good variety of beers on tap. Good age spread in the bar (I'd say ages 25-50). Mostly locals but a friendly place with a mellow vibe. Don't go here if you are looking for a serious dive, a cowboy bar, scary cas ino people, exotic dancers, "artistic" wannabe's or mexicans (which seemed to be the target markets of other places I walked by). But if you are just looking for a lower case "bar" this is a good bet. read more

Sept 13, 2014 The Stray Dog Pub Cafe Just a lil behind on the review. Hubby and I travel, due to his work, all of CA & NV. We decided to check this place out due to the reviews we read. Note: On this day there was a wine walk downtown, which started at 4:00. Which we were not participating in. We got there about 3:30 to have a late lunch/early dinner. The service was great! Hubby loved the beers he tried, sorry I don't remember which one's he had. I'm a wine drinker, chardonnay, to exact......well....let's just say this is a beer joint.... It is a very small place....however we really like the atmosphere here...and I liked the flower painted on the women's bathroom door. The bar it's self was very old, beautiful wood work.....yet again another place in this town that....if these walls could talk....I'm sure the stories are endless and entertaining! O..k...we went in to try the pizza, however we love fries, so we ordered their fries first...... and we were going to order a pizza after we ate the fries. Well....I must say....we really aren't fan's of their fries. And with seeing other tables that had pizza....we could see it was not NY style pizza, which was what we were looking for. So we decided to head out in search for NY pizza. Note: My hubby is a New Yorker....and he knows his pizza. Which we have not found yet. However looking at the reviews again...we will probably give the place another try, as it appeared that the folks eating the pizza were pleased. read more

One of our favorite hang outs in elko. The bartenders are sweet and always on top of things even when the place is packed. The cook does a great job for space he has. No fried food, which is something we love about this place. The food comes out slow, but the cook works in a small kitchen and probably does one order at a time. It won't bother you though because they have great beers on tap to keep you busy and drink specials all the time. It's just a nice relaxing place to go to meet friends and have perfectly poured Guinness. read more
