Stopped here on our way home to Reno and were very disappointed. We have only ever stopped for fast food in Elko but decided to try a restaurant for the first time. I will say, our service was great and super friendly. Restaurant was clean and we got a table quickly. But the food omg. Not good. I got a taco salad and it was so dry?!?? I've never thought of a taco salad as being wet or dry but I couldn't explain it. It was hard to eat. I got sour cream, Guac and salsa with it but it was still so dry. Bizarre.... My husband got the French dip and also didn't like it. Said it also had no flavor and was over cooked. The fries were hard as a rock and came in a grease puddle. Must have been the last fries of the bunch before new ones were made but how did the kitchen feel comfortable sending them out they were horrid.... We also got the kids Mac, the kids meals do come with a lot of food so that was nice. read more

If you're coming to Mattie's Bar & Grill, make sure to ask for Teven! This is the second time she has served my husband and me, and she has been absolutely amazing both times. She has such an upbeat, positive attitude, and you can genuinely tell she enjoys what she does. Great hospitality can be hard to find, but Teven truly stands out. She was attentive the entire time our drinks were never low, she checked in consistently without being overbearing, and she made our whole experience enjoyable from start to finish. I lived in Elko for 12 years, ate here all the time. Haven't been here in couple years and boy has the food gone down hill. The only thing edible on my burger was half of the patty. Bun was hard as a rock, the fries were black as the were cooked in dirty oil. My granddaughter was served a burger on a roll they called a French dip. My husband chili burger was dry and tasteless, my guess the "chili" was at least a week old. We will never eat here again. When I ask the server if they had new cooks, she said, no. Mattie's has a lot going on between the faint smell of cigarettes when you first get out of your car...to the spotty service...to the great food. Let's deep dive. I decided to eat at Mattie's yesterday for lunch. The restaurant was very busy and there was a wait however we were sat very quickly and didn't have to wait long at all. Tip: Don't stand at the door waiting for acknowledgment...walk right up to the cashier to get your name into the mix, then they can't ignore you. Seeing as how I smelled cigarettes upon arrival, I asked if food was served in the bar and if smoking was allowed in there. Yes to both, so we decided to sit in the restaurant portion seeing as how the smell of cigarettes makes me severely nauseous. I appreciate however, how the bar is completely sectioned off with a floor to ceiling wall so it's not Smokey inside the restaurant portion. But the smell of cigarettes out front really threw me off. As we were sat, the waiter immediately came for our drink order which was nice. We got our drinks and I asked if the daily special of Pozole came with the things it usually comes with, like cabbage, lime, onion etc. It did so I ordered a bowl, which came out SUPER fast. With our drinks. While we looked over the menu, people were sat next to us and the woman with a bandana in her hair and a neck tattoo was joking with them, laughing. When one of the women said she was going to go into the bar and make sure to "smoke a lot of cigarettes." A joke I can only see being at my expense. It made me very uncomfortable but I ignored them. We ordered and our food came out. My food was amazing. The sour dough bread, the turkey, avocados and melted cheese were perfectly grilled. It was delicious! My boyfriend however had asked for extra caramelized onions and his onions were no where near as cooked as he wanted them. He looked for the waiter but the gentlemen wasn't coming back, so my boyfriend walked up to him. But when he did, the waiter walked away. A nice woman in jeans with pretty black hair (who appeared to be a manager) saw this and rectified the situation immediately. The second batch of onions came quickly and were perfect. Finally while eating we noticed we were not given any napkins or silverware. Seeing as how my boyfriend went up the first time I went up for the napkins. Those really should be given by the hostess as you're sat. All in all the food was great and minus the few mishaps, I'd go back for the Pozole alone. I ordered (for pickup) the spinach artichoke dip and the black bean burger with avocado and sautéed onions instead of raw onions. When I got home, I saw that they put raw onions on the burger; no big deal, just picked them off. The dip was really good. The burger was tasty as well, but it was dry (I don't think it had any condiments. I also got a side of ranch and paid for a side of bistro sauce, and I didn't receive the sauce I paid for. I'm not sure I'd eat here again, or maybe I'd consider dining in next time to see if the experience is different. read more

Stopped here while charging the Tesla nearby. Sat at the bar top to play video poker and have a drink. I have no complaints here only suggestions. When new customers walk in and you see them, you give some sort of friendly acknowledgment. Hi guys, come on in, sit wherever you like, or whatever. Once seated at the bar, the bartender finished up a few tasks before walking over to begin service. She was friendly enough, but didn't try to engage. Not complaining. Drinks were good. Husband used the restroom and said it was dirty. Reading some of the other reviews, I'm curious if the management is reading them. Drinks are always great tasting. However, the price is similar to a fine dining experience than a grill and taphouse dining experience. Food is always good, especially appetizers. The artichoke dip and onion blossom is always a good go-to choice at Matties. When ordering a burger, the sweet potato fries are a great side dish choice and a healthier alternative to french fries. Service is a hit or miss depending on how busy the restaurant is and the day of the week and time you go. It's worth going to when wanting a good burger and out doing shopping or getting ready to see a movie. read more

We're on a road trip. We stop in Elko from Salt Lake City. This is a cool bar. 5 big screen TVs have five different NFL games on. Our server, Kelly, is very friendly and efficient. We each had salads for our meal. They were huge! Grilled Chicken, cheeses, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, olives, onions, avocados. As good as they were, the real star of the meal was the Blue Cucumbers and Tomatoes appetizer! Fresh sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, onions, and Bleu cheese crumbles drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette. We would definitely recommend this place if you're in Elko. read more

We occasionally pop into Mattie's for dinner, and tonight seemed like a perfect night for a French melt. We went in around 5:30 and were seated right away. It was moderately busy, but as soon as we were at our table, our drink order was taken and brought out. Sean was at our table taking our order shortly after our drinks arrived. We ordered the Triple Crown appetizer and a French Melt to share. The appetizer was prompt and hot. We were just finishing up the appetizer and our sandwich and fries were brought out. Tonight was the 1st and last time we will be at Mattie's. We went after the normal dinner rush so the place was not real busy. We were seated right away, and while there were many places to sit we were put at the dirtiest spot in the whole place. The picture doesn't capture how filthy the floor was. The waitress was non-existent for the 1st 10 minutes. A person clearing tables took our drink order. Once our food did arrive we could say that the fried pickles were the only thing good about any of it. The pork chop sandwich was over cooked and dried out, it tasted like the oil was old. The french fries were not fresh, they were soggy, greasy and lukewarm. My husband had the jalepeno burger, it was plain with no flavor. We were not asked if we needed any condiments, so no mustard or ketchup on the side for that burger. The waitress was so remiss in her job that I had to ask for napkins. When we had, had enough again the waitess was no where to be found, so we walked to the register to pay. What a disappointing dinner. I wanted to give 1 star, but the husband said the pickles were good so give 2. **EDIT REVIEW** If you have made it this far, well here is an update. After my first review Mattie's reached out to me. We agreed to give it another chance. Unfortunately I couldn't persuade my husband to join me so my daughter came along. We went on a Friday night (same day of the week as before) but this time went right at the start of the dinner hour. The floors were clean this time. We were handed menus and told we needed to go go online to order!!! SAY WHAT!!! I THINK NOT, don't give me that Covid garbage, give me an option! Our waitress could see our struggle and gave us menus. Points for her! My daughter ordered ice tea, it was brought to her ( not by our waitress) after several minutes I had to flag someone down to get sweetener for her tea, as it was never offered and we were not given a chance to ask. We both ordered chicken strips. They had 4 nice sized strips that were nicely cooked. I had a side of mac and cheese which was NOT thick and creamy, but more runny and bland (again we were not given Pepper or salt and no waitress to ask for any). My daughter had the gand cut fries. *Sigh* they were cold and lifeless the 30 seconds spent in the microwave before being served did nothing for them. I had to again flag our waitress down and request new fries. She immediately brought a bowl of them out. Oddly enough the fries on top were perfect the fries on the bottom of the bowl were cold and greasy and super, incredibly salty. I will say the honey mustard is some of the best I have ever had. Definitely keep that brand on your menu! At the end of the day the meal was pretty average. I appreciate the opportunity to try one more time but I just don't think this will place ever make it on my top 20 list. read more

A friend of mine & I went for appetizers and just to visit. The food was all over cooked & dry. We actually ended up sending 2 entrees back. To be fair, they did remove them from our bill, but the food was terrible. We had a variety & all of it was definitely not edible. Normally I do my research and pick where to eat when we are out of town. I let my husband pick tonight, and I wish I hadn't. The place looks clean but needs some remodeling. The service was good. My husband had their Philly and he didn't like it. I had their avocado bacon CB. It was a pretty decent size but it had no flavor. Ended up eating half and took the rest to go. We did have an appetizer, the artichoke dip. It had a twang to it, so my husband said something. The waitress said they put lemon juice in it. But it still didn't taste right. read more

It was hard deciding where to have dinner in Elko on my 2nd night in town, but this place caught my eye since I was craving a good burger and Elko doesn't seem to be big on burgers for some reason. Their menu indicates they serve a 1/2-lb hand-formed burger and fresh cut fries, so that was enough to draw me in. Once inside, the interior is a little outdated and doesn't necessarily look like a taphouse that I'm accustomed to. It looked more like a family restaurant with a lot of carpet. The front area, which is non-smoking, has the reception desk, dining room, restrooms, and a kids play room / arcade. There is a back area which houses the bar where you can smoke. I wasn't extremely hungry the evening I visited. Too bad because it was Wednesday, the night they have a Wing special. I still went with their signature burger with bacon, cheese and avocado. Sure enough when it comes out, it's huge and delicious looking. The fries are fresh-cut, shoe-string fries. I didn't even come close to finishing my meal, but the part I had was pretty good. Service was also decent for this type of establishment. If you like history, they have several historical photographs of Elko on the wall by the restrooms. They're all dated to give you an idea what the town looked like back in the day. read more

***Update*** We all have bad nights. The night I visited Maddie's was not a good night for them. However, I received an email from Scott apologizing for the service and owning up to the staffs' shortcomings. He offered to buy me another steak dinner or gift card the next time I come through. I thanked him and declined his offer. I told him I would try them again, but anonymously. I ordered the ribeye steak and those AMAZING green bean. Once again my salad came and we were off to a good start. The in-house made ranch dressing was once again a perfect topping to the bed of lettuce and spinach. When the steak came shortly after, it looked different this time. It was topped by a beautiful crust of seasoning. I crossed my fingers and hoped that as I cut this beautiful piece of meat that it would be pink inside. It was PERFECTLY cooked!!! I took one bite and was in heaven! I asked for steak sauce, butter and of course another side of green beans. I really didn't need them, I just wanted to see if they would respond to my request better than last time. My server Chris catered to all my requests promptly and even came by to check on me. The manager also was around to check on all of us and even came by before I left. All of the people told to me to go to Star Restaurant for steak. Don't go there. Go here! I would say if you had the steak I had here tonight, your taste buds would be in heaven! What brought me back here was Scott's caring about his customers and responding to all our reviews(ok, the green beans too). If something is wrong. He wants to make it right. I walked in and immediately I was hit with a smokey smell. I mean immediately like right when I walked through the first set of doors. I was a little surprised at that considering there is a sign that says on the door. "Smoke Free Establishment". That very quiet hostess took me to a table right next to the swinging doors going into the bar. I was still smelling smoke so I assumed it was coming from the bar...I asked to move to the tables next to the window. She pointed me to a table and as I approached..it's NEXT to the other set of swinging doors into the bar!! Comedy of errors but nobodies fault by mine for not being clear. Next time (if there is one) I will just request a table for sure further from the bar. Of course I didn't actually go into the bar either so I don't know....maybe Cancer man was just walking through the building before I got there. Call Mulder and Scully. Anywho... I ordered the French Melt. It was good. The brew fries were REALLY good. The price was $13ish before tax and tip. For a sandwich...not really feeling it. If I do find myself in there again there are numerous other items that piqued my interest. Especially the Wedge. A few other notes. Been coming here for YEARS. The service and food have steadily gone down hill. The food prices have skyrocketed and the food its self is not good. I heard they had been under new ownership or management not sure. So I decided to stop back in after a year. First of all. Why is that no one greets you at the door. No "hi, welcome in." Or " we will be right with you." I a blank face everytime or a glare. Untill someone comes up and says "2?" Then just starts walking and slaps the menus and silverware down and walks away silently. That is NOT how you great your customers. You are the first impression. Moving on... Our server was not happy to be taking tables at all it seemed. She asked what drinks we wanted then was annoyed we weren't ready to order even though we just sat. I ordered the Crispy chicken salad. Its 14.99 for a tiny helping of greens and 2 pounds of cheese. The vegetables are outdated and the lettuce was wilted. My husband ordered a burger which was basically a burnt hockey puck. Fries were cold. I would have asked our server to remake it but she never came back. Never got a single refill or asked how our food was. When she did return she put the ticket down and said I'll get you a box. Never got a single smile from her. All she wanted was our credit card. We paid and left. Another long standing restaurant in elko riding on the fact its been here for ages. Bad service. Bad food. Trip from Reno to park city with 2 grandkids and dog so Mattie's patio sounded perfect. Server wasn't prompt but not too long with drink order. However my "double" Tito's cran/soda tasted like no Tito's plus had to go to bar to ask for limes. Eventually server took order, lots of time crawled by, some lady came out to tell us cooks slammed, thanks for patience..... lot more time crawled by, hour total before food came out. Even though we needed to get back on road, I was ok thinking we'd have some good food. Wrong!!! The 2 burgers were well done, soggy buns, no condiments but would not have mattered cuz so tasteless and dry hungry kids only ate one bite (hubby and I both took bite and agreed not edible!). The breaded chicken on my salad were like dried out croutons. Fried pickles were fried breading, no pickle taste. Only thing edible were boneless chicken wings. Even though server could see burgers were barely touched she asked if wanted a box and I told her No as burgers were bad. She didn't say anything, express concern, no apologies much less offer to take off bill. So food 2 sodas 2 beers and 2 drinks were $100.... Plus my husband always tips 20% despite service or food quality. Like many reviewers here, we waited a really long time for our food. Otherwise this would have been a higher starred review. My margarita was long gone before there was even a hint that any food might arrive. Our server was kind enough to apologize. When the tater tot nachos arrived they were amazing! Not oversauced at all. Chili green onions cheese olives jalapeños. They were seriously some of the best things I've eaten in a while. Get these. Now. My cod was lovely, cooked competently and they were nice enough to sub fruit salad for all the carbs. The honeydew was rock hard however. Cheesecake was serviceable. Nothing to get stoked about but we were celebrating a big birthday so it had to be done. We would have picked a more swellegant restaurant for the occasion but ALL the places like that in Elko and environs are closed Sunday. Sometimes Monday too.
