My experience with City PT has really been spectacular. I had two knee replacements and then a double shoulder replacement on one shoulder. lucky girl! City PT on Baxter St. somehow it got me through it. I have Daniel to thank for bringing me back to mobility after my knee operations (and I continue to make progress.) The difference between City PT and the larger, fancier establishments, which are good facilities also: There is ongoing attention and considerably less customers for City Physical Therapy to keep up with at the same time. City PT physical therapists work with their customers in a smaller sized, fastidiously clean location with significantly less exercise tables. Unlike the huge roomed, multiple exercise tabled of the more popular businesses, the City PT doesn't have a multitude of people gathered together in a rush hour type of ambience. You will not get the sense your PT is lost on the other side with another customer. I notice, having had multiple experiences with PT this year, that the exercises are more or less the same. (Although the knee massage treatmet got rid of all the swelling in my right knee collecting there since 2017.) At City PT, the ambience is quiet and not rushed, always with ongoing focus on one patient at a time. Don't be surprised, when another PT asks you a question, offers a pillow, removes obstacles in your way... They too know you, because they have been watching you and your progress. The administrative staff gets to know you, too; sometimes you will catch them, admiring your progress, There are of plenty of subway lines that will get you to either City PT location. I've decided to try City PT after I was disappointed with Spear PT, but this place didn't fit my expectations either. This office has a policy that you must leave the credit card on file with authorization to charge it anytime they want. When I refused they asked me to leave cash to cover possible copay's in advance for few visits. I had never had this kind of requests in other PT facilities. But the most unappealing was their tier system of services! For what insurance covers you'll get only 20 min of their services. If you want 40 min or 60 min you have to cough up more cash additional to your insurance and co-pay. Too money oriented facility. I cancelled all my appointments. Though I must admit he therapist Ulin Li was knowledgeable and positive, but that didn't tip the scale towards using this facility. read more

Having gone through several injuries and different PTs in the past, I can confidently say that Dan is hands down the best in the profession. I went to him post a shoulder dislocation and with some existing knee pain. Throughout the month, he answered all of my questions and concerns, provided thoughtful assessments, challenged me and made me look forward to each visit as I felt stronger after each session. As a plus, the whole staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They're also keeping the facility clean and safe, with temperature checks and sanitizing the beds and equipments after each use. Had to go see a physical therapist after herniated my disc, first time was not a very satisfying visit, because the PT worked with three patients at the same time (DO NOT MAKE AN APPOINTMENT ON FRIDAY), but overall acceptable. What really changes my satisfaction level was the second visit, I was carefully evaluated by another awesome PT Helen, who not only manually relieved my pain, found what the real problem was, which isn't exactly herniated disc, but a severe muscle strain that associated with it based on my symptoms. Educated me a lot, and taught me more effective exercises to help heal it. I felt very physically relieved after the session and ended up buying their little medicine ball, which I highly recommed purchasing it to relieve some pressure points on your body. Expect the PTs there to be working with at least 2 patients at the same time cause that seems to be how City PT works, but with a good PT, she/he will manage the time with each patient and get you a good pt session, like Helen did. I also want to show big appreciation to their pt aids/front dest representatives Gigi and Jenny, who are absolutely friendly, patient, always smile and working with proficiency by multitasking. read more

I started having PT sessions w Dan at a boutique gym in Queens this week. All of the safety precautions are in place: the hand cleaning, temperature check, thorough sanitation of tools and constant hand cleaning throughout the session. I have an old stubborn tennis elbow and Dan is an expert at what he does. Dan's work is wonderful. He is precise, patient and persistent with his treatment. Within 2 sessions, I feel like I have more mobility in my arm. It feels like it's coming back to life! I am an active person, but I'm not one of those first-thing-in-the-morning runners and I hate the gym, so I was actually intimidated by the idea of going to physical therapy. But I had to and I'm so glad that I did it at City PT/Daniel Tahany PT. I was dealing with issues with my feet, ankles, and shins. The team took the time to ask questions to get at the root of the problem and explained everything to me in plain English instead of trying to impress me with jargon. I was given an exercise/strengthening program that I could do at their office and at home. After a few months, my condition really improved and I was back to being a weekend warrior in Zog touch football. Daniel, JoAnn, Michelle, and all of the aides were consistently professional, but best of all it's clear that they really care about the work they do and the people they treat. The entire staff is extremely welcoming and the therapist are magicians! I had a bad knee injury and was skeptical about PT at first, but now I whole heartedly believe and recommend them to anyone! I got injured in a Muay Thai competition and found myself limping and training on it for a month before I was recommended by a fellow teammate to try City PT. I was scheduled to have another fight a month later and I wanted to do anything to get me prepared. After my first visit I could feel a huge difference, I was committed to seeing City PT twice a week to help get me strong. By the time of my fight my knee was left uninjured during and after the fight. I continued to see them once a week after for maintenance and today I graduated! I worked with Joann for something like 12 weeks on re-rehabbing a ruptured achilles from several years ago. I couldn't imagine a better PT experience. She knows her stuff, is super friendly, and always willing to answer questions. Although she sometimes has a few patients at a time, I always felt that I got the attention I needed. Dan and his team are friendly and helpful. Never had to wait--even if I showed up early or late. Seems like Dan knows his stuff and he definitely helped with my particular issue. Like other PT places I've been to, the hands on portion of the visit is minimal. Most of the time is spent doing exercises or stretches and ice/stim. There are some other PTs there, who I also liked, but you don't always know if you'll see Dan or one of the others, so ask if you're concerned. Cash or check only for co-pays. This is one of the few times I take time to write a review about a place and it's for a good reason! The staff was very kind, the physical therapist who took care of me (JoAnn) was very knowledgeable and paid attention to detail! She explained to me the way that muscles work in the affected area and how they can get entangled during strenuous exercise. She was very thorough, put the right amount of pressure during treatment and gave me a whole bunch of new exercises to make sure I protect myself better from now on. UPDATE 2018. I went to another physical therapy place and I did have a tight iliopsoas and tight hip flexors. My issues that I developed at CITY PT are now completely gone with the care of ANOTHER physical therapy place. My hip is functioning the way it was BEFORE starting care at City PT meaning ABSOLUTELY NO MORE PROBLEMS. I don't have arthritis or over flexible joints as the owner of City PT tried to convince me. After City PT care I almost gave up hope on all physical therapists. --------------------------------------- I wanted to write this review for awhile but wanted to wait to see how my condition would resolve. I used to love this place. First time I came there to fix the pain in my shoulder and they helped me a lot. The pain was gone. I recommended this place to everybody I knew. I came back to fix my runner's knee. I did most of my sessions with Shayna Haley. During the treatment, I started to develop pain in my hips on the front and sides, as well as a dull pain in the groin on the right side. I let Shayna Haley know that; she said it was absolutely normal and part of the process; I believed her and continued through the pain. Later the pain started to worsen and I developed a painful click in my right hip (I never had any clicks or any issues with my hips before). I told Shayna about it, she said it was normal. I had 12 treatments for my left knee and what I was left with was iliopsoas tendinitis and bursitis as well as outer thighs bursitis, I developed a click on the outer thighs too (which I never had before either). I decided to go to Daniel to try to fix the damage, as he helped me before with my shoulder. I told Daniel (the owner) about it and what struck me so deeply that he was defending his colleague and trying to convince me that everything was quote "standard and it was my body and I probably had arthritis in the hip". Why was my care standard? Do all people have standard bodies? No. The treatment should always be personalised. They also put in my file that I had prior hip problems :) Later, when I had money, I did an MRI and X-rays; I didn't have anything wrong with my hips besides tendonitis/bursitis. I believe that they gave me a lot of leg raises with weights where my iliopsoas was already very shortened and irritated by sitting at work. Also, I had a surgery on my wrist and treated it earlier at City PT. The exercises they were giving me for the HIP would have irritated my wrist and knee conditions.They had my file with all my info and should have paid attention to what exercises to give. After 10 sessions to try to help with the pain in the hip, there was no relief. They failed to recognise my body`s needs and created an imbalance in my body. What I was left with was an extreme pain in the groin, not able to lay on a straight surface without support, not able to walk for more than 1 hour, not able to get inside the car, not able to put jeans on, forget about exercising, forget about wearing heels. Even the slightest bend in the leg caused a painful click (called a snapping hip syndrome). It took me 2 years and IV anti-inflammatories to get rid of the pain. Since Jan 2017 I started to go to yoga and was shocked at how tight my hips were. Since stretching my hips and particularly iliopsoas using yoga and Youtube videos, my condition got much better and the painful click is almost gone. I'm able to exercise again. read more

I came to City PT after shoulder reconstruction surgery, my orthopedist Dr. Alexis Chiang Colvin recommended them. I was treated mainly by Joanne and Dan, but honestly everyone in the staff is great, including the receptionists/apprentices. They take their time with each patient and they really try to answer all the questions that came up during my recovery process. Also, they fought for me by the time my insurance wanted to stop covering the treatment, they wanted to make sure I was ready to go back to full activity (cycling & soccer) before I "graduated" from PT. Anyway, they are friendly, kind and humorous. They will be honest and give you a realistic plan for recuperation. I could not have have been happier with my experience at City PT! I went here for almost a year recovering from a torn ACL and then from the surgery to repair it. I worked with Dan, Joanne and Shaina (sp?) each many times and I liked that there were multiple therapists and I wasn't stuck with one person the whole time...each one of them is wonderful but having variety in my exercises and getting different perspectives on my progress were both really key for me to stay motivated. Everyone in the office is incredibly nice and professional, and they make it a really fun atmosphere. I went to City PT because I had pain in my knee. Not debilitating but annoying and to be addressed - if I have any desire to run or play sports again, I'm barely 40 and in average shape. Initially I found the staff extremely friendly and helpful. The initial consults were good and I had a plan in place. Each time in the beginning I had homework - I diligently followed the instructions. All of a sudden, no homework came and I kept feeling like I need to go ask for the next steps - always. I really don't think I should have to pull teeth for my treatment plan. Yes, I ask a lot of questions and I am an active participant in my healthcare, I don't really think I was being a burden, but maybe I was to them. Maybe they saw me as 'not that big a deal' what with people getting all banged up in accidents and such. I'll never know. I went for about 10 weeks. Then I got a call that I can no longer continue as the state of NY requires a prescription to continue. I told them I wish I knew that upfront, now there is an obvious a break in my care. Good timing, considering I hadn't actually made that much progress and if there not going to give me homework proactively, I figured, "Why go back?". I chose not to - on pleasant terms. They did follow up with me - for the bill - repeatedly. No mention of "Hey, how's your knee?". Just the bill. For the record, I asked the billing dept for a description of the charges - I got a picture with tiny print w/some medical codes - I literally have no idea what any of it means. But you know what? Am I angry? Yeah, a little bit. I paid my bill in full and did all my homework the whole time. I believe City PT has good intentions and certainly competent Dr. and overwhelmingly friendly staff, but I do feel they dropped the ball with me. Enough to pull 3 stars, from what could have been 5. I do wish them well as they have a good mission and have obviously helped others quite a bit. read more

Exceptional therapists and supporting staff with top notch equipment/ facilities. They have amazing atmosphere to receive treatment where it's basically a fun activity rather than a " doctors appointment". I'm a professional martial artist and this is my go to rehab facility. I've gone here for several injuries from weeks to months and all injuries have been fully rehabilitated. The main PT is a trained martial artist of many years while several other PT's on the staff are competitive athletes themselves, so they know what they're talking about! All the staffs at City PT were wonderful, I had Shayna to assist my lower back problem and she was very gentle and patience with me. I went to CityPT for several months after being in a car accident.They accepted No-Fault. I went to them after looking them up and noting their ratings and hours of operation on Yelp; true story! I didn't want a PT place to interfere with my job. Joanne is the Chief PT at City PT downtown. When I first met her she was warm, friendly, and caring. After analyzing my situation, she started me off with a set of exercises, monitoring me all the time without me really noticing. I told her, after several sessions, that I didn't think my neck would get better. I anticipated needing laser surgery. Im a Union Carpenter. I couldn't lower my head to simply look down and lift it back up without feeling like my neck was rusted in place. It was very painful and scary. I thought I'd never get better. Over this time, I met other PT's and employees who also ran me through the exercises, but Joanne monitored me 100%. She also did some neck massage which, to me, seemed to combine accupressure and direct massage. Soon, the pain was reducing and I was able to move at work a bit better. She said, "it'll get better, plateau, and get better". She was 100% correct in my situation. Everyone was very attentive, friendly, and super-caring. Soon, I had to book appointments a week or two in advance as they were getting busy to get my specific time. I usually had no problem. Today, I very, very rarely notice anything the matter with my neck; I can work with no problem and step well. I do keep up with the exercises that she taught me. This sounds unabashedly stupid, but I'm gonna be sad when my shoulders and neck feel better, because I will truly miss the lovely people of City PT. I've been coming here for help with lifelong migraine headaches related to me being a twitching pile of tensed, knotted muscles. I have had the pleasure of being worked on by pretty much everyone here and can attest that they are all fantastic and will fix you and basically it's all rainbows and unicorns no matter who you work with. I'm talking about coming from taking multiple prophylactic AND abortive therapies, all of which are freaking expensive pharmaceuticals (MY INSURANCE COMPANY ONLY PAYS FOR A CERTAIN AMOUNT TOO - MEANING I HAVE TO DECIDE WHICH MIGRAINES I JUST CAN'T AFFORD TO TREAT), I have been on every possible restrictive diet to stop migraine triggers, I have a horse dose of botox injected into my scalp and neck to temporarily paralyze my spasming, migraine-inducing muscles, and I still was having 1-4 migraine headaches a week. Yes, FML. But I'm down to 1-3 migraine headaches a MONTH now, since I've been coming to City PT. I don't wake up with random searing pain in my back and neck for no reason. Imagine! Whatever, these physical therapists are wizards, the staff is lovely and wonderful, and I'm a believer in City PT. AMEN read more

The staff at CityPT are a great bunch of people. As patient for many sessions, it was always welcoming and pleasant experience. I went to CityPT for chronic neck pain and tension that I've lived with for the better part of my life. Shayna and staff has done incredible work on me. My sessions with her has taken an unbearable chronic neck issue and managed to make it significantly better. It's difficult appreciate the level of skill and experience it takes to fix what I thought was unmanageable chronic pain until having experienced the it for myself. Dan really helped me make a comeback from severe back disability due to minor strokes. Unfortunately after the first 3 visits I was passed to other attendants after about 15 minutes, They simply look at the exercise sheet and told me to do reps and walked off and folded towels..Still am thankful for the help I got, and continue my exercises at home. read more

If you've never had the need for physical therapy for a sports related injury or after orthopedic surgery, well good for you, you're lucky. But if you've had any kind of injury, sports or otherwise, then City Physical Therapy is where you should go. They are the best, and I say that as someone who's made a habit of somehow injuring myself on a regular basis. (don't ask!) I initially sought them out for some help with back pain due to spinal stenosis, and then again for a torn elbow tendon, and now more recently for a compressed disc and nerve in my neck. In each case they've been attentive and focused on all the details of my rehab, including help with my home exercises and self-treatment. Dan, Shayna, and Joann are all professionals, and they will give you the care and guidance that you need to ease your pain and regain your fitness and confidence. And their friendly assistants will guide you through your exercises and treatments on your road to recovery. I've been to many PT facilities (too many!) across the city over the last twenty years, and City PT just has a good, supportive, positive feeling about it. It's where I go for help now. I was at City PT for approximately 12 weeks for my knee. I worked mostly with Joanne and Shayna, both of whom are absolutely phenomenal. City PT is not like other PT places where they overbook each therapist for the hour (and then some) that you're there. I had one-on-one time with each of them, and the assistants (Karen, Shirley, etc) were all amazing. Everyone who works there does their best to help you and make an otherwise painful PT session a little bit more fun. They accept almost all insurances and are very good about rescheduling and making sure I got the days I wanted. Hopefully, I never have to have PT again, but if I do, I'll definitely be returning to City PT. read more

I've been to a few different PTs before coming here. Most PT offices shut you in a small room where you spend most of your visit waiting as your PT scrambles in and out in an attempt to juggle 3 patients at the same time. It's quite foolish. It's almost as if they think that having you in a room where you can't see the other patients will trick you into feeling like you're the most important. It was extremely refreshing to see this place take an entirely different approach. Here, there is a single common room. It's has huge wall-to-wall windows (sunlight!) and an awesome top floor view. There's no scrambling exasperated door-open-door-shut routine... just super friendly and attentive PTs, staff, and other patients. If at any point you have a question, need direction, or are ready to move on to another exercise, a PT or a staff member will see this and immediately come to your aid. Questions are answered, advice is given, jokes are cracked, in real time, from across the room if need be. The energy and the system here is very positive, sane, and communal. It has been an eye-opening experience for me -- to see a PT office that does things the right way. Another important aspect to note is that although the PT might be handling other patients at the same time, appointments are staggered such that you are always given a significant amount of one-on-one time at the beginning of your visit. This has been the most important part of my experience here, as I am obsessive with understanding everything about the process: what exactly is wrong with my body, how an exercise is supposed to help, whether i'm doing it right, what exact muscles i'm supposed to be working, etc. My primary PT, JoAnn, had all the answers, and was extremely knowledgeable, patient, kind, and helpful through this. I came in for a herniated lumbar disc, and only here, after a year of different doctors, was I able to come to a complete understanding of how and why it happened, and how I need to conduct myself in order to heal. This place is just right, and should serve as a model for all other PT offices. I emphatically recommend it. read more

This spot is so cool what a gem. It's small and it isn't glamorous, it's very blue collar but the vibe is really positive, the therapy is outstanding and extremely pro active. Joanne my therapist is great. When i first went I was a little thrown off I expected a bigger space with bells and whistles but once I went thru 1 session i was sold. I have had several sport injuries over the last ten years so have had my share of experience with different physical therapists. Last year I tore my Achilles and had surgery. Initially I was going to a location just around my work but was not very happy so switched over to CityPT 4 months later. And I am SO HAPPY I made that switch. Dan and his staff are very knowledgably and attentive. I cannot thank them enough to have helped me to get back on my feet to the level where I can compete again. I am good enough now where I can do most of the things I used to before injury, including single toe raises (yay). I am confident that with my own diligent training (I do Kendo, a Japanese martial arts practiced with wooden sword) and gym work out along with the support of CityPT I can recover 100% in a few more months.
