I am going to Japan in a few months and wanted to learn the basics before I left so that I would have a more complete and enriching experience. My husband speaks fluent Japanese and has tried to teach me before but it proved to be difficult for us to work as student and teacher so we looked at other options. I finally fulfilled a long-term goal of taking Spanish classes. Last year I started taking private lessons with Karen G., based upon wanting to work with someone familiar with Argentine Spanish and I'm so happy I took the plunge! Karen is a fantastic teacher who makes learning fun. Though I still have much to learn before becoming totally fluent, I've reached a point where I am able to converse in Spanish with my husband's Spanish-only speaking family as well as our Argentine friends. Though her expertise is obviously not limited to just Argentine Spanish, it's helpful to have someone who can add the extra conjugations to my lessons to give me the complete picture. Since I had a little prior knowledge of Spanish and had an imminent trip, Karen was able to tailor my lessons leading up to it and fast-track a lot of learning in a short time. Later we focused on more grammar and conversation, eventually graduating to writing assignments and then mostly conversation. At this point, I'm proud to say that I'm also reading novels in Spanish and I'm very motivated to keep practicing and learning as much as I can. After pursuing French classes for 5 years while in school, I was bummed when I graduated from College and couldn't remember a thing! Two years later, I decided I wanted to pick up the language again. I knew it would be difficult with a full-time job, but I was determined to try. Enter Strommen - a wonderful company employing numerous instructors ready to teach a multitude of languages. Let me first express how impressed I was with the company's ability to accommodate it's students. In my first briefing via phone call with Benoit, he had informed me that a one-on-one session would be best (though group classes are also available). I was able to sign up for class with Alexandra, as she was located near my home - super convenient! 4 weeks later, I have zero complaints! Alexandra is an amazing asset to Strommen. Coming back from a language i had once known well was scary for me, but Alexandra was very accommodating. Her lesson plans are molded by what I personally want to learn. She even began my course asking if i preferred to learn grammar, or casual phrases and words for travel. I opted to go for the more intense route, breaking down the language through grammatical exercises. She assigns me light homework, which gives me great practice on my own time. When I come back to class the next week, we review together. Alexandra even has me read every sentence as we go over homework, improving my pronunciation and translating abilities. It's rare to find a teacher that will tailor a lesson to you and do it well. Alexandra is very relatable, comfortable, and most importantly knowledgeable in the language. I have been taking Italian for about two years with Strommen, alternating between two teachers, Garrett and Valentina. I like both a lot, which is why I switch between them. I have referred 2 or 3 other friends to Strommen, and they are still taking with them (French and Spanish). I studied Russian many years ago, and learning a new language gets harder as you get older, so I really appreciate the patience and good humor of Garrett and Valentina. Recently, I have had a few occassions where I ran into native Italian speakers. While learning a language is pursing an infinite goal (think of how many nouns reside just in a supermarket), I was really pleased with the fact that I was able to carry on a conversation without reducing the Italians to laughter. I am a multiple language learner, having lived and worked abroad in numerous settings. I came to Strommen based off the overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews (and excellent pricing) and stayed because of the fantastic instruction I received from my German teacher Carolin. They say that education is just information but great teachers make it art. This could not be truer in Carolin's case. She is the consummate instructor--smart, kind, yet appropriately strict. As someone who has taught languages before I really appreciated her ability to create courses for me without any structured material, as we quickly made it past the realm of textbook-usefulness. Honestly, it was almost mercurial how she always had something fun and fruitful to do at each lesson, and could even fit structured grammar lessons in to everyday conversation (no easy task)! Needless to say, Strommen must just really know how to pick them, and in that they deserve credit. I can not vouch for the other teachers, but for me, my five star review is due to the wonderful instruction I received from Carolin and the results of that instruction. Judging by the incredible reviews all over this Yelp page though, it seems that diligent instructors are the rule, not exception, at Strommen. So, what are you waiting for? Strommen French with Fabrice has been, and continues to be, a great experience for us. Fabrice is very French but equally very American. He is professional with a laid-back kind of style. Our classes are always well-organized and build on our existing lessons.The class work focuses on fluency and pronunciation, with home work focused on grammar. Fabrice is a very good grammarian in both languages. Fabrice is patient and considerate, and really connects with his students, young and, well, not-so-young! To top off the experience, classes are held in his beautiful trellised garden. We are looking forward to using our new French skills on our upcoming trip to France! And, we also plan to continue with our studies with Fabrice when we return. You offered me several, reasonable choices for a solution and ultimately left me feeling confident that my fluency goals will be met. Cecilia did everything during our first session together that I would expect from a highly rated teacher representing her highly rated language school. She listened carefully to me as I struggled to speak to her only in my broken Spanglish for the duration of class time; towards the end of the hour, she was therefore able to make an accurate assessment of my current skills level. She asked me what my specific goals were, and the reasons behind my desire to speak Spanish fluently- she listened, and she heard my answers. She then clearly communicated to me that she will be planning the content of our instructional time together, my homework assignments, etc. according to 1) where I'm currently at 2) where I want to be (and by when) and 3) where she believes she can take me (which luckily = #2). Cecilia discussed my homework expectations, including how much time (minimum daily) I will be needing to spend on homework in order to attain my goal. I received tutoring for French and German with Strommen Tutoring. I have taken a lot of private tutoring courses in the past few years- but none were as engaging, interesting, helpful and enjoyable as with Strommen. You can move at your own pace adding or removing the hours per week you take class as needed, you can meet either in person (which I did at the beginning) or on Skype (which worked perfectly once I moved away from LA). I purchased a special package and was able to split the hours between French and German which was really nice! I took from a variety of tutors during my time with Strommen: I especially enjoyed my time with Dorit and Aleksander for German and Corinne for French! I took an intermediate group Spanish convo class with Fernando before moving to Puerto Rico, and 5 months later, I'm still thinking about and missing this class. Strommen is super organized, and Fernando especially did a great job of preparing the students to improve speaking skills and make us feel comfortable practicing different topics. I took one more class before I moved in the Santa Monica area with a different company, for convenience of location, and 100% regretted making the change. I definitely recommend strommen! Nicholas is my Mandarin teacher. I work in LA's Chinatown and thought it might be cool to try to learn Mandarin, well now I am hooked! I want to be fluent. Nicholas has a way of making you feel comfortable with the language and is fluent in both English and Chinese so he knows what you are going through. He has lived in many Mandarin speaking countries and that helps with knowing about the culture too, which is huge for me. I can't say much about Strommen Tutoring as a business, except that they (very efficiently) put me in contact with Lon for one-on-one German tutoring. Lon is truly a great tutor, not only because he obviously knows his German, but because he is charming enough to make you feel that you aren't actually being tutored at all--that you just happened to stop by at your German friend's house for coffee (and of course you just happened to have brought your German textbook). Lon always offers to make delicious French press coffee, he has lent me a parallel text of German short stories for a trip I took to the east coast, and has made me a CD of German music. His is a truly special tutoring method, and it works, too: A few days ago I had the chance to practice my German with a very cute Austrian girl who found my German excellent for such a short amount of study. Having started my Strommen tutoring capable of saying little more than "Ich bin mude. Ich will shlafen," I knew immediately that I owed my success to Lon. I have nearly finished my first 20 Spanish lessons with Cecilia through Strommen, and I have loved every minute of it! First of all, my experience with Strommen and its employees has been amazing since I first contacted them. The Strommen team is very quick to respond to emails and phone calls, and they are always so pleasant!! They went out of their way to find me a tutor who could meet me at a very specific date, time, and location, which I am so grateful for. Their customer service is excellent. Also, I absolutely love my tutor, Cecilia! Before meeting her, I was a little nervous to find a Spanish tutor as I can be shy about speaking Spanish around others. I opted for the package of 20 private lessons. I had taken Spanish in high school back during the Eisenhower administration (ok, not exactly but it seems that long ago when i started trying to recall my Spanish) so I was not an absolute beginner but close. It's surprising how quickly progress is made in a one-hour a week class. The lessons are very flexible and you can schedule them at whatever frequency works for you and at a convenient location. When I compared my Spanish to my son's at the end of his first year of high school Spanish we had covered way more ground in our 20 lessons than he had in a year, so that felt satisfying (not that I'm competing with my children, maybe a little -but you didn't hear that from me. I'm just saying i felt like I got my money's worth.) Cynthia is a terrific teacher and able to gage how quickly or slowly to move forward. She encourages me to speak in Spanish and creates an environment very conducive to making that a comfortable and fun experience. Although I'm not fluent yet because after all "Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho" (not sure if that's the right idiom at all for what I'm trying to say) but would happily sign up for more classes with Cynthia because I always look forward to the classes and feel they are a better value than CDs I had previously invested in that went unused. read more

I took French with Fabrice, both group classes and private lessons, for about a year and can't say enough about what a great professeur he was. Helpful was that he is also just a rad dude. We would chat about politics, how sports are stupid, and the comedic traits of Americans-having a tutor who was easygoing and friendly made it easier for this massively self-conscious person to attempt the accent, cobble together enough words to sort of make sense until I had the skills to actually make sense, and ask questions. The lessons weren't 'work' because they were informal and fun. The thing that set Strommen apart is this personalized element-Fabrice would recommend French films, was always available to answer my copious questions via email, and applied real life to our lessons (like teaching me about verlan slang, which is like if "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" was written in French). About 9 months into my lessons I went to Morocco alone and thanks to the French skills I had learned, was able to get around, communicate with people who mostly didn't speak English, and ask Air France to change my airplane seat en français-which felt like quite a little accomplishment, haha. read more
