Sexual health for the queer community is certainly something that's top of mind for me and recently I participated in the final AIDS/Lifecycle, a 7-day fundraising bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Worse, the SFAF workers said they were targeting the man because he's white and they're bipox - like they had a free pass? If the opposite happened, the SFAF workers would be dismissed. Other workers saw it and did nothing. Does SFAF give workers a free pass to target individuals for being of white? We're born this way. read more

I'm experiencing a lack of interest on the part of Strut/Magnet and I've been a client of theirs for 5+ years? I'm not receiving prompt return of calls. Someone was going to look into finding me a clinic closer to home - haven't heard anything. Then a manager leaves a 14 second message with their personal cell number. I phoned to leave a message at 6am on Sunday morning not knowing it was a personal number. I thought I was dialing their office number. Who leaves their personal number when it's business related?? Been going here since at least 2014 The staff and care team are helpful, attentive and effective. They return your calls or emails with concerns timely. They are also open on Saturdays which is great for those of us who cannot make it during the week. read more

They have really long wait times and they are not a very inclusive place. In case you show up 10 minutes late for unavoidable reasons, they will make you wait for an over an hour and even then there's no guarantee for an appointment and a lot of walk ins are accepted before you. read more

Assembly line medicine I used to get PrEP here, but not anymore. They don't treat you like a human being. I went in for PrEP after what was admittedly an uncomfortable dry spell. I did not need all of the swabs because I had not any any... activity... that would necessitate getting tested. My previous doctor (which was owned by AMAZON) let me decline any tests that I didn't need. But not this one. This rude nurse required me to go through uncomfortable swabs that, SURPRISE, all came back negative because I had not had any exposure whatsoever. To put it bluntly, if I'm not enjoying the fun of getting laid, I shouldn't have to go through the misery of these tests. read more

Waited over 3.5 hrs as a walk in just to be told they couldn't see me. Literally could have just gone to urgent care and get treatment I needed. Went there because I felt it was a safe place for me as a member or LGBTQ community. Can't comment as to quality of care because wasn't treated but their managing of walking is the worst I've seen. This place was so understaffed by clinicians that someone couldn't come out to at least say go somewhere else we don't have time for you. Don't come here if you have an urgent matter. That type of false representation of care should be reviewed by some city oversight agency . Wasted my entire evening and now I have to go to an ER and possibly wait another 3 hrs to be seen. I was impressed with how easy it was to set up, come in, and receive both of my monkeypox vaccinations at Strut. The nurses (Steve and Andy, if my memory is correct) were professional and pleasant, and thoroughly answered my questions. Dylan, the front desk person was super-friendly and very patient and helpful with my registration. I have minor cognitive issues from a coma several years ago, so initially had some trouble navigating the sign-in tablet and he was genuinely kind in walking me through it. It's great there is this sexual health resource so accessible right in the center of the Castro. In terms of a clean, organized environment, personal service, and interactions with staff I could not have asked for anything more. Thanks! read more

Stonewall can't be beat for the drug counseling service it offers also here at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation's presence in the Castro. Magnet is your go-to STD testing facility and various no -profits hold events in the slight third floor mixed use space. The building has the best views in the Castro from a roof deck and it went though an expensive design process. That's the good part. The bad is that the space lacks the clubhouse feel of the 1035 Market location where those receiving services can also hang out. Strut doesn't want to encourage loitering. It can't afford to do so. It's understandable but a bit sad. It's a beautiful building but much of it sits empty waiting for the next fund raising meet and greet. read more

no star is my actual rating. poorly thought-out system for getting tested. at this clinic if you are working daytime or cannot get to their front door at 9 a.m. you are out of luck. that is the only way to be seen and tested. like a herd of cattle trying to get a lottery ticket. this non-profit should be investigated to see if it is fullfilling its stated objectives. they are only serving a tiny minority of non-working people and make no accomodations for anyone who cannot be at their front door at 9 a.m. for their version of a black-friday sales event. the sf aids foundation seems to be operating a clinic for the ease of the employees without any regard to serving a wide swath of the community where this clinic is located. read more

I was pleased to learn Strut kept evening hours because I work late. I walked to a counter on their lower floor and stated why I was there; the person behind the desk replied, "Why do you guys always come an hour before we close?" I was directed upstairs. I walked upstairs and noticed the waiting area was empty with the exception of what appeared to be an employee working on a laptop. I approached the check in counter and stated the reason for my visit. The person behind the desk appeared inconvenienced by me, typing while I spoke and only making eye contact when I asked him to clarify their reason for refusing to see me. This is the conversation: "Everything is closed down now." "Oh, okay. But you're open until 8?" "Right, but you should have made an appointment or come in another day." "You're open on the weekend?" "Yeah, but we're really busy then, too." Note again please that the waiting area was empty and that they close at 8 and I was there a few minutes before 7. The person behind the counter made no attempt to help me. Instead, they dissuaded my visit altogether. When I proposed an alternative, they replied, "Well, you'll wait long there, too." This was a terrible experience on many fronts, which is most upsetting because I have worked professionally with some of their medical providers--all great practitioners awfully represented by an inhospitable frontline staff. As I am a person with a disability & an advocate for people who face discrimination, I report that I was denied an appointment at Strut/Magnet yesterday afternoon (5/25/2021). I have TBI & Epilepsy. My skull has many scars on it from a Cranioplasty surgery. Even though I had scheduled a medical care appointment to occur at 5:20, I was waiting there till 5:45 PM. With the Human Rights Commission, I will file a complaint. The Independent Living Resource Center on Howard Street between 4th & 5th I will inform them of the discrimination I faced. I will also inform the Mayor's Office on Disability. Supervisor Rafael Mandelman's office will be informed of the discrimination I was dealt at Strut. Cleave Jones & Larry Kramer would be greatly disappointed in Strut. read more

Strut is the kid from high school who thinks he's SO popular. And you take him home and it's so dinky - the service is so dinky. BUT they spend so much time talking about how important they are to the community!! My alternative recommendations: Alliance (also in the Castro) provides the same services at no cost WITH NO LINES. City Clinic provides better service with mild lines. I take my health and safety very seriously as should any LGBT person living in a big bustling city like San Francisco because, frankly, we're all high risk, it's San Francisco. And during the weekend, when City Clinic was closed, I turned to Strut, and I felt the PrEP navigation team placed me at greater risk. I'll never go back. read more

Overall, I had an okay experience. The staff was friendly and eager to be helpful, but the overall process for walk-ins was poor. TL;DR: Make sure you allocate a lot of time for the whole experience, regardless of whether you have an appointment, but especially if you're coming in as a walk-in. It would have been a bit less frustrating if the process were more clearly articulated on the website, so that I could have had the right expectations and then planned better. But even if it had, it wasn't well handled. I had to come in at 9am to grab a number. Then I came back at 10am to stand in line to sign up for a walk-in slot, and the number I had grabbed wasn't particularly useful. Nobody else in line seemed to have a number. Then I came back again for a 12:30pm appointment. Even though I was early, I wasn't seen until after 1pm. At no point did I understand when I was supposed to skip the line, if at all, despite having numbers and appointments. read more

They reject a lot of people her for services if u say one wrong word or don't fall under their requirments which are strict. Not very happy right now. Made a appointment online 3 weeks ago. Showed up today and they did not have me listed and nothing aval. Today. They said they could tell me at 230 if had an opening at 230 . I would have to wait 45 minutes to be told if they had anything today. I am not hearing a lot of good things about the new Strut. I was going to volunteer but I think I need to rethink it. After a lot of thought I tried volunteering here, filled out an application and and months later I get a email saying, Strut is very popular, we and our application process is highly competitive and we will not be going through with your volunteer application. I am not sure what qualifications you need to have but I have a degree and have worked in the medical field for over 15 years. This is not for ALL of Strut organizations, just a ONE part of it: BRIDEMEN is a cliquish organization as displayed by their Academy Award event. I volunteered early, it's a popular event. But the organizer Michael Donofrio picks out who gets to go. So all his friends on the 'wait list' bump off people on the legit list. How gay you say? This is my response: I joined this group and came to the orientation in December, the "Academy of Friends" was the first event I signed up to do. I signed up early, and was not on a wait list. I was called out of town on an emergency yesterday and hadn't been able to check my email until this evening. It seems that at the last minute Bridgemen's organizer Michael Donofrio decided to send me this somewhat bitchy email: "Hi Paul, I hope you are enjoying your weekend. I am terribly sorry to have to do this, but Academy of Friends informed us today that they recruited too many volunteers. Unfortunately we will not have space for you to volunteer at the event tomorrow, but I hope you will join us for another project very soon. If you show up to the event, you will not be on the list and will not be permitted to enter the event. I will be in contact with Academy of Friends next week to express Bridgemen's frustration with how this played out, but for now all I can offer you is a sincere apology. The building itself is gorgeous with a stunning terrace on the top floor overlooking Castro Street. The Stonewall Project quite possibly saved my life. This place is AWFUL. They are very bad with treatment appointments. I waited for over an hour to get called in. Dozens of people that came in after me were taken in right away. I guess getting tested is more important than the actual treatment?! Another awful experience with these people. Anyone I know that worked here left because it's such a mess here. Non-profits need to also treat their clients well. Especially the ones that need real help! read more

It was my first time coming here for testing and I felt so welcome by the front desk staff. I was seen promptly as a walk-in and when the nurse drew my blood, it was quick and painless. Strut is amazing. When I went to get STI testing and labs at a private practice, it was way less integrated, way more of a hassle, and cost me hundreds of dollars (and of course, US healthcare being the way it is, I wasn't aware of the cost before I received a bill in the mail). I really appreciate how clean and new the facility is, and of course, the fact that testing is absolutely free no matter your insurance status, with no solicitation for donations. Just not needing to worry about copays, EOBs, copayments, etc. in a healthcare setting as a patient is fantastic. The staff overall has been great, particularly Emer and Polly! Emer always has a welcoming smile whenever I go and is always super helpful, and Polly has been super efficient and friendly. There are lots of freebies like condoms and lube, and the waiting area is spacious, with new art all the time. I'm sad I can't find Struts around the country, but I'll be back if I come back to the bay. read more

I'm not sure what is going on in this place, they changed website, name, better building, and they seem to be less community oriented, colder, and it is getting very difficult to get an appointment. STRUT, the building had become the LGBT center of the Castro, but the services need to be re think, and adapt according to the needs of the people. I feel they can improve for STD testing. read more

I love this place as a resource for the LGBTQ community. They offer free acupuncture on Mondays and Wednesdays. Dirk is the acupuncturist on Wednesdays, and he is truly AWESOME! If they wanted to give off a "too cool for the community" vibe then mission accomplished and hey it only cost $15 million. Personally, I would rather see that money put into direct services, you know, to actual people instead of into swanky digs with mullti-level roof-top terraces that look more like a fancy clubs then a health clinic. As a former Magnet client, I for one don't feel comfortable going in there. Feels like a private club including a very unfriendly front-desk bouncer. Luckily, there are REAL community organizations still left in SF that serve the LGBT community and not self-aggrandizing or glamour seeking. I for one will never again donate to the Aids Foundation or AIDS Lifecycle seeing how many donation money has been used. Its pretty disappointing but I guess the new flashy tech-oriented SF needs a new flashy tech-oriented AIDS foundation. read more
