What a beautiful camping spot close to Portland. We reserved 2 spots for tent camping for 2 nights. The sites were clean and well maintained and parking was very close to our sites (28 & 29). The tent pads are gravel and there's a nice grassy area for hanging out in our freestanding hammock. There are miles of beautiful trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Stargazing was incredible and we wished we had brought a telescope. The tent area has 2 bathrooms with flush toilets which were mostly clean. They could use some spider web removal and a good floor scrub. One of the bathrooms was locked, maybe for maintenance, on the second day of our stay. We saw deer, a big variety of birds and a couple cute squirrels and chipmunks. A pond along one of the hiking trails hosted a large number of salamanders! We will go back and try a cabin site next. read more

The "walk-in" campground is a legit WALK-IN campground. It's far enough away that I suggest carrying in as much as you can, grab the wheelbarrows available (appreciated these) and start your trek. We arrived kind of late and didn't realize how far in it really was. It's pretty secluded and quiet which is nice, the fire pits are in areas shared with other campsites, great way to meet other people, but there is not individual pits. There was an outhouse next to us, it was kept really clean and park rangers went through consistently which was also nice. There are lots of paths to hike and other parts of the campground near by. Really loved the location and how close it is to Portland. Very nice area, would love to try the actual campground next time! read more

Cool camping grounds near Vernonia town in Oregon. Came and visited my parents. Enough space for a trailer, and had trees in between each site for privacy. We took a tour all over the grounds and so much to see. I think the coolest part was the stables where if you have a horse while camping, they have corrals for convenience and you can camp with your house. They also have cabins too. Grounds were clean and a nice place to relax. I went over the 4th of July weekend and they actually had a little parade you could join and walk around. Kind of neat to get everyone involved. read more

Quick getaway from the city, LL Stub Stewart Park is a gem for all ages. We mostly stayed in the hike in camp. They provide carts at the parking lot, so you don't have to worry about carrying your stuff to the site. Do be careful with the carts, there's a slight hill that you have to go up during the short hike to the campground. The sites themselves are pretty nice, compared with the main drive-in campground. Wooded, quiet, water, pit toilets - but you can also walk back to the park entrance and use the flush toilets there! No fire pits at each site, instead they have two communal fire pits. The sites around the fire pit make it feel like a group camp. So you've setup camp, now what? Go disc golfing! Beautiful beautiful course. It is technical enough for my partner to enjoy it and it's pretty maintained. Then at night you can go to the hilltop viewing area and see the night stars. Going during the Perseids you'll see so many shooting stars! If you camped at the hike-in camp, I recommend you drive to the hilltop at night for safety. There's some trails too for easy hikes. Some are shared with horses and bikes, so watch your step. This is such a great state park, friendly staff, clean amenities, and adventures galore! read more

Great park. They've got cabins, a campground, a disc golf course, picnic tables, and loads of trails. We come often for the trails. Generally multipurpose trails can be frustrating...but for some reason I still enjoy them here. There are miles of trails here...some for horses, others for bikes, a few for hikers, but most are multi-purpose. Yes, you've got to watch for horse piles, and definitely for bikes around tight corners. But the setting is great, and the trails wind everywhere. Granted, for me some sections are far superior in their beauty than others, but the good thing is you can wind around and make your trek long or short and flat (ish) or with some elevation. read more

This is a nice park close enough to Portland to make a quick overnight. We enjoyed the cabins as a nice winter outdoor activity. The cabins are heated and have beds for five and a dining table. The restroom is a typical state park type with fish toilets and running water. The park has a good amount of hiking and MTB trails. But they just go in circles no real view or destination. Overall, it's a decent park, but not one I'd pick for more than a night or two. It's not a destination. read more

Beautiful park, and I look forward to returning. I just did a day trip for hiking and the visitor center this time and will definitely plan for a longer visit with an overnight. The visitor center has some of the coolest displays - lots of photos and info about the local wildlife, how to ID where they have been by their scat and tracks, and what the local bird nests and eggs look like. There is a list on the wall to track recent wildlife sightings. They have stickers (my favorite!) at the tiny gift shop area. There is also a table for young kids to color and do activities if the littles need something to occupy them while adults and older kids check out the neat info. The trails I went on were well-maintained, even after recent very rainy/windy winter weather, with good signage at the trail crossings. There are maps available at the visitor center. The day-visit space at Hilltop has a nice view with plenty of tables and open grassy space, and a fenced-in dog run area for the pups to have some off-leash time. I did notice a bit of distant traffic noise while hiking, as another reviewer mentioned, but only because there was nobody around me and I was really listening for it. $5 for a day parking pass is well worth it. read more

We rented a cabin at the park. They are nice "rustic" cabins with a table and chairs, a futon couch and depending on what cabin you get, a couple of bunk beds with the bottom bunk being a full size and upper being a twin. You want to bring your own sheets or sleeping bag, I also brought a mattress to go on their mattress. The cabins have ceiling fans and heaters. I would've liked this place a whole lot more if the cabins wouldn't have been right on one another. Also, the bathroom situation is ridiculous, one sink for 15 cabins the women's and men's bathroom and definitely not enough toilets. If you're a guy, you better be ready to wait in the morning...have you ever heard of such a thing...it's always just the women's bathroom, not here. I can't imagine what the person that designed this place was thinking? And the water, is right up on a few cabins, so if you need some water you basically have to go and get in someone's space. No thought into layout. But a pretty park. read more

Excellent State Park Campground - quiet - roomy - in the hills among the trees and lots of green grass Most recent stay was Mother's Day Weekend May 7 - 9, 2021 ~ We camp in a Little Rig "Tear Drop" style RV w/o toilet or shower ~ plus we like to eat outdoors using the picnic table and set up our dining canopy for sun and weather protection and thus rely on condition of campgrounds facilities and being nearby our site ~ so our critique is focused in that area OMG! This place gets the highest rating in all areas. Restroom/shower building is immaculate; bright and sparkling clean. The staff keeps it that way with regular cleaning. Had air dryers for hands, but wished for paper towels in restroom area for clean-up (realize it is statewide). Individual unisex showers with hot water and good pressure fully tiled. Very nice design feature was a separator "pony" wall between the changing area with built in bench and shower stall with soap dish. Kept the water spray away from the changing alcove / stayed dry for toweling off. Ample wall hooks - other parks / campgrounds should use this design as a model for perfect showering experience The grounds are well kept and all sites cleaned / raked after use ready for next camper. Most all sites have full hook-ups, are all level and are roomy with wide greenspace between sites. All have gravel pads with large picnic table and fire pit ring. will accommodate a variety of dinning/shade canopies on the gravel area only metal stake will work. All interior roads are paved easy access for all sized rigs. Separate walk-in tenting area plus a tent allowed with an RV on site. Hiking/biking trails everywhere - even has pumped air on trail for bikes if needed. And it has a disk golf course right in the campground read more

What a great park, and only 45 minutes from Portland. Good choice for winter because you dont have to drive thru any mountain passes to get there. Be ready with your Forest Pass or pay the $5 fee. My friend thought his national park pass would be ok, and it wasn't. I knew this but he insisted and sometimes it's just not worth being right, right? Anyway, it was just a $5 ticket with a really polite note. Nicest parking ticket I've ever seen. I was there for day hiking and was not disappointed. There is something like 20 miles of trail, none of them more than moderate difficulty. I saw lots of great campsites, some sweet cabins, horse trailer parking, and many other features that were very inviting. There were even some hike in camping spots to get you away from the crowd. It is adjacent to the banks-vernonia path - 22 miles of unrelenting beauty. I've taken this route on my bike and had a great time. This would be great for families. read more

Nice park and campground. Spent two nights here in late September. It was sorta close to the road to Vernonia, so there was a touch of traffic noise, which was surprising. I just happened to come on camp lawn maintenance day. Lots of blowers, mowers and weedeaters. That was Sunday. The night was not bad till around 5pm when a gentleman came in and played Mariachi music till 10.30 pm. Then talked very loudly on his cellphone. Luckily he left very early the next day. Thank my lucky stars. There should be rules about loud music. But the weather was excellent. The views on top of the hill by the cabins were incredible. The showers lacked water pressure , but were good and warm. Nice and clean like the restrooms. Very friendly staff. Very clean campground. Then the night became a zoo again. Another gentleman came in and snored all night. I thought I was dreaming of a huge dinosaur sized bullfrog. And that was about 40 yards distant. Incredibly loud. quite amazing, I felt bad for the older couple who were tenting/ biking about 15 yards in a adjacent campsite to him. This was in the tent site portion in the front of the park. Odd that I didn't hear one generator either night, that was the second bonus beside the views and weather. Just one of those odd times when it just seems typical everyone seems bother you when you want to escape the human race for a couple of nights. Otherwise I would be back. Preferably Tuesday thru Friday. Not on a weekend when most are out. Great place. Next time.... It's the cabins, if I can reserve one. read more

Hilltop (day use area) has an off leash dog park, covered area w/grills, picnic tables, and a wash area for bikes (and people if needed). Lots of hiking/biking trails. What a great place to mountain bike. A few ways to get to the bike park. First you can drive to the top of the day use area. This area has washrooms, bike wash, picnic tables, and a covered area. Cost is 5 buck per car unless you have a state park pass. Now gear up. Second, drive to the Buxton trestle park. Gear up there and ride the Banks Vernonia trail 2.4 miles. Check the brown sign and take Hares Canyon trail up to the Day Use Area. It's about two miles of climbing on a horse/double track trail. Take your time. The rest up at the day use area. The alternative route is keep on the B-V until you hit the state park road. Follow that road up to the day use area. Are you ready yet? Cool. Follow the parking lot out and left on at the road. Keep climbing up the road until it starts to bend. On your right you will see a sign for the trail. This is the connector trail to the mountain bike area. It has some nice banks at the start then som up and down parts through some wood fencing. You'll hit the switchbacks for the start of your climb to the mountain bike park. At the top the NW Trail Alliance created some new smaller trails great for beginners to build some skills. Then jump on the crosstie to where North Caddywhamper way crosses the creek. The next trail on the right will be Shoofly. Take it for a short climb then some nice flowy sections. It will the take you up and down into a canyon eventually a climb back to Caddywhamper. Right there is the base of most of the trails. Ride up Caddywhamper to rinse-and-repeat for two really cool trails. Check your skill level before riding these. Drip Torch is a black diamond trail and Greenhorn is Blue even if the sign says green. Still great fun. There is a bottom part to greenhorn that has rollable jumps and big berms. This trail will kick you onto the top of lower Shoofly where you can climb back up Caddywhamper to Rinse and Repeat and repeat those sections. Or, you can head down lower Shoofly. This is a blue square trail with various terrain including a few climbs, switchbacks, a few bridges , bermed turns and some not so bermed. A few drops and some spurs you can explore. At the bottom of Shoofly near the creek are some switchbacks that are almost always muddy. This is due to water seeping through from the hillside above. If your car is at hilltop you have a two mile climb ahead of you. If you parked at Buxton then you can coast down 2.4 miles. Whoohoo. At this point you would complete a 11.5 miles ride with 1100+ accent and decent. It's past my beer time! See ya. read more

We love this little park so close to Portland. We went on the new years hike to the top. it was good fun, the ranger was great, and everyone kept up. Looks like great bike trails for off-roaders. They have a good staff that are friendly and really know their area. There is an active volunteer base as well. If you would like a quick get a way close by this has all the makings of a fun weekend. It would be a great place to do your "shakedown" trip to make sure everything works. The linear trail runs thru the park, so you can take the 10 mile hike to Vernonia, and enjoy a brew pub. read more

This is a hidden gem in the Oregon State Parks system. It is only an hour away from Portland, has several trails for hiking and biking, disc golf and camping. I've always been a fan of the Brooke Creek campground; you have to hike in about a quarter of a mile, but it is $11 and you get a large amount of solitude for the price. It is also a hub for the Banks-Vernonia trail; you can hike in and camp for a nice weekend getaway. Rangers are always friendly and helpful, and don't seem overworked or annoyed by visitors. I'm always happy to visit this park, and for the price it is a true bargain. read more

A great park that is less than an hour away from the city. Stub Stewart has a little something for everyone. In fact, there is so much there that I have only done a portion of the many activities available. Do you not really like roughing it when you go camping? That's fine, Stub has dozens of cabins available for a reasonable price and they comfortable sleep 6+. Like to rough it a little more? Well there are plenty of tent sites. Some are reserveable in advance, while others are walk up. The walk up sites function as a sort of hike and bike system because the park is in the middle of the Banks Vernonia trail and a popular bike camping destination. There is even an equestrian campsite since the area is around many equestrian trails. Once you're at the campground there are tons of activities. The campground is nested in the forest so there are hiking trails abound. There is also several mountain biking trails and a mountain biking obstacle course. This is a great activity if you rode your bike to the park or if you brought your bike on your car. There is also a full 18 hole DILF course. Be warned though, course can be overgrown at times and it is easy to lose discs that way. read more

I go for mountain biking. It's the best mountain biking in the area by far. It is no Post Canyon in Hood River by any means, but it is still great. Less long flowy routes than I would prefer but the areas that are flowy are still great. I wish the trails were all one way but they are not, so just keep your head on the look out so you don't run into other bikers and dogs. The bike trail interacts with the hiking, horse trails, and frisbee golf course - so there's lots of opportunities for running into each other if you're not paying attention, but the as long as you aren't an idiot you're going to be fine. I love it out here. 4/5 because I would say post canyon in hood river is 5/5. read more

I camped here for one night during my Spring Break Oregon trip. I found the campground online as I was looking for something outside along my route that day-heading out of Portland to Astoria. The reviews and pictures seemed good. This place is beautiful! It's set in the forest and has a very serene, natural feel to it. The camping areas are all impeccable and well maintained without losing any of the natural forest feel. Bathroom was large and clean and smelled fresh inside. Tent site is $21, great price! There are a few different lots with sites and I stayed at the one closest to bottom of the hill. Mainly because I have small dogs and didn't want to get too deep in the forest. Also because I was only here for one night and wanted to break camp early in the morn to head on to the coast. I really enjoyed the night here and would definitely return! :) read more

Stub Stewart State Park - Spectacular view right outside our cabin - Parks Near Me - Buxton, Oregon

If you're one of the folks that just hates outdoor activities, you can stop reading now---this place is not for you. There, now that I've eliminated 10% of you, the following review is for the other 90%. We've visited Stub Stewart State Park now perhaps twenty times over the past five years for various purposes. Stub is an interesting park, because it serves so many diverse purposes. Have a horse? No problem--they have a full horse camp and staging area and miles of horse friendly multi-use trails. Want to hike and tent with just a pack on your back? Great hike-in tent camp with tables. RV'er? They have two different RV parks with hookups. Like that "camping feeling", but prefer a solid roof over your head? 15 cabins for rent at $43-51 a night (depending on how you book it). Each sleeps five (some with two rooms), with a ceiling fan (summer) and thermostat/wall/space heater (winter), front porch, electricity, picnic table and fire pit. Just want to swing through for a few hours and have a picnic? Hilltop Day-Use area has lovely tables and a covered pavilion suitable for groups up to perhaps 30-40. Got a group? They have an outdoor amphitheater with screen and projection hookups. Hiking? There's 25+ miles of trails snaking all through the park. Some are easy strolling trails for those of beginning abilities (or with strollers or young children) while others are more aggressive for seasoned hikers and mountain bikers. Disc golf? They've recently added a new disk golf section. Mountain biking? Almost all the park's trails are open to MTB'ers, plus the Northwest Trail Alliance / Westside Trail Federation has built a new MTB-specific freeride park with (currently) beginner and intermediate downhilling trails which are a total blast. My (currently 11 year old) son and I have now taken the beginner trail a number of times, and look forward to getting our skills up so we can move to the Intermediate trail. We've stayed 5 years in a row at the Cabins, for stays varying from two through four nights. Lots of fun, lots of relaxation, and some absolutely beautiful night-sky views. Decent bathrooms and full showers central to the cabin area, and camp hosts gladly sell you firewood for $5.00 per 2 cu ft (enough for about a 2-3 hour camp fire). For group events, you can also book a recreation room (which I believe has a full kitchen) at the cabin village as well. Any day use will cost about $5 for parking, but you can get annual and 2-year passes at just about any large sporting good store or the park office itself. If you're going to spend a frequent amount of time here and other Oregon fee parks (as we do) it will pay for itself in short order. Stub Stewart State Park is a fantastic and growing park, and an excellent venue for anyone who wants to get out for two hours, two days, or two weeks on a limited budget. Along Highway 26, it's only about 40-60 minutes west of Portland, and only 30 from Hillsboro. There's really something for everyone here. That is, unless you hate the outdoors. read more

Nice place to camp outside of Portland. The staff is extremely friendly and the views of the forests are incredible. We stayed at Site 24 in Dairy Creek West. Some of the other spots could be inconvenient depending on our party. They are pretty close together but while we were there, everyone was respectful of the quiet hours. I definitely recommend Site 24 as it was backed up to a forest and the most beautiful campsite there. We also had two dogs to not having people walk by our campsite was ideal later on in the evening. Also, the sites are a short walk from the parking lot, so be prepared for that, but they have a communal cart you can use to transfer your camping gear. The bathrooms are clean and nearby. The park also offers a Frisbee golf course (we didn't do so can't vouch for it) and a dog park, which was an added bonus for us. The very polite camphost also sells firewood and ice in our loop from 5-8 pm. There was some hiking trails so you should have plenty to do. If you're coming from out of town on a camping trip, it's a great base camp for visiting the city. read more

Check-in was a bit confusing. Wechecked in online but we weren't sure if we needed to go to the office on arrival. As we were pondering what to do, a ranger happened by, checked that our site was readyand told us we could head on in. BTW - there are large parking areas for RVs by the office but you can't see them from the road. The interior roads arepaved but it can be tight maneuvering for larger rigs. It's nice to have full hookups in a state park. We and some friends had a coupleweird electrical issues occur but we never figured it out if it was us or the park. Sites are paved at the entrance (ours had chalk all over it from kids playing) and the rest is gravel - that tiny stuff that you drag into your RV. Most sites are fairly level - ours wasn't but we managed. The site was plenty long enough for our 45er and toad. All sites have a large gravel patio area. There is nice spacing between sites but no privacy at least in the East section. Some of the treed sites in the west section have some privacy. There is no WII FI but Verizon was4g 2 bars so we used our hot spots. Satellite ispossible in some sites. It ispretty quiet at night but busy during the days with lots of kids running around and dogs barking. There are playgrounds and trails to hike/bike on. Definitely a family oriented park. The closest wineryis about 20 minutes and shopping is also about 20-25 minutes away. read more

I love to hike here. You have to be ok with the smell of and learning to avoid horse poop, but it's worth it. It's not crowded. I've gone twice on a weekday and been nearly or totally the only one there. There are some great views! It's a little hard to navigate the trails even with one of their maps, so you have to pay attention and kind of know where you are going. There are several trails that can give you quite a work out - mostly those give you a great view of the coast range. The facilities are well-maintained and pit toilets aren't hard to find. $5 day use fee. Don't forget your sunscreen (and maybe bug spray). read more

I rented an ADA cabin to take my 88 year old mom. The parking was so tight I could barely get the door open far enough to get her out of the car and we ended up leaving and not staying in the cabin. This is a well-maintained trail system that I try to take an hour or two walk-on at least once a week. A lot of people like to bike up here and there is also substantial camping. I guess the only reason I didn't write it 5 stars is not even a fault from the park. It's that it's kind of drab. There is not a lot of natural scenery. You're basically walking around in a forest. Compared to a place like Silver Creek Falls it's just not on the same level but it's a wonderful park for what it is. read more

The cabins are nice for an outdoor trip in winter that's close to Portland. The walk-in sites are lovely though the trail to them is very hilly and gravelly. Also, the showers/real bathrooms are all the way up in the car camping section...which is a LONG hike up a very steep hill. The car-camping sites are ugly. You can tell this area is second growth/old logged land. The views at the top are nice though there are lots of clearcuts in the area. It isn't exceptionally beautiful here, like Oxbow, but it's nice. read more

Great camp ground. Rv sites are large and well organized with good water. Lots of hiking and activities and history if you like railroads and logging. The MTB area and disk golf are both good fun and the star gazing out there is outstanding. Wasn't too sure about this place due to the lack of a river or lake or other natural wonder, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The park staff was great too! We had most interaction with the ranger staff and they were all very helpful and polite, very pleasant. Particularly Ranger Bridger Steward went out of his way to assist us. It's only 25 minutes from our house but has the feeling of being middle of nowhere so definitely will return! read more

Our first stay here was in December in their pet-friendly cabin. We had a great time! The pet-friendly cabin is cabin 8 and is the end cabin which I really enjoyed because it offers more privacy. There is a trail right out the front door that we hiked on a little even though it was really muddy and wet. We went back last weekend with 4 friends, our dog, and our friend's dog. We discovered a fenced in dog park near the day use area, which was wonderful for our pups to run around in. I love how close this park is to Portland and the cabins are so clean and cozy. We will be back again to check out the disc golf course and to hike some more trails! The only thing I wish this place had was more pet-friendly cabins. The one fills up so fast, especially on weekends in the summer. read more

This is a review of the primitive campground within the park - not the regular campground which seems far less appealing. The campsites are set within a lush area with large trees and ferns. Many felt private (alas I don't remember specific sites to recommend.) There is a communal fire pit and a grassy area where kids congregated. Access is via 1/4 (1/2?) mile dirt access road, although it feels longer when lugging your stuff. Thankfully carts were available to help transport gear. Also on the plus side is the price and easy access to the bike path. All in all, if you're the sort of person who is considering a primitive campground then you'll likely enjoy this one. If, like me, you prefer primitive campgrounds then you'll love this one. read more
