    Peacocks and peahens
    Mar C.

If you consider North Plains as part of the Portland metro area, then this is hands down the best place for beginner disc golfers within Portland, in terms of scenery and variety. 3 courses for different skill levels. Very woodsy, earthy, forested courses. One of them has a hole where you throw your disc across a pond. My partner said that was the easy course, but it's challenging for a newb like me. Bring an extra disc and a towel! During covid times, there weren't a lot of people, so that is a big plus. It's $5/pp and you can play disc golf all day. Watch for the peacocks and peahens, they are a hoot!

Really beautiful place that is actually a wedding venue, but we went here for fishing. It was our first time fishing. The guy at the front explained us the whole process. When we got to the water, it still took us a while to get the hang of it but we finally caught two good size trouts in the 2.5 hours we were there. You are expected to clean and cut your fish yourself, which we really weren't ready for. But it was an experience! You pay $5 per person to enter the grounds and then $8 a pound for the fish you catch. All the gear is available there. Just bring maybe an ice box to put your fish in if you have a long drive back.

I am amazed that I experienced this for the first time this August! A friend gifted me a three day pass for Faerieworlds and this setting made that experience magical! The first day I got there super late in time to see the last band and spend time with friends, walking them back to their campsite. I honestly had passes for camping too but was a bit too nervous when I had never even been to the site at all to go all in like that. I will say I was very impressed with the Faerieworlds volunteer staff the whole weekend as they were so welcoming and on top of it. The markers leading you to and fro were very clear, especially with a volunteer to also point the way. It was super confusing to find my way around in the dark so things were far easier the next day...and I even saw a few of the peacocks with their young! The paths throughout were so perfect for all the rows of vendors. The pond is gorgeous and the huge stage setup is magical - there is not a bad spot to watch from, whether you are on the lawns or right up front. The camping area offers an incredible amount of sites but I do warn you that this whole area is quite challenging for us that can walk well.

Bob was excellent to work with and the venue was everything we had imagined and more. The website is a bit outdated but I was blown away with how beautiful the venue was in person. Bob runs a tight ship and is helpful in all aspects of wedding planning. We made the leap for a destination wedding and booked Horning's Hideout Creekside sight unseen, it was a fantastic decision and I have not had a moment of regret.

People of Oregon: Why has this magical locality not yet been yelped?!? It takes a girl from California to be the first? So be it. A 30-minute drive from Portland will bring you to Horning's Hideout, a wonderful, secluded place that caters to the outdoorsy person in you. Beautifully nestled in an Oregon canyon, Horning's offers a gorgeous setting to have a picnic, camp, fish, play disc golf, or just enjoy the scenery filled with tree-lined hills, a beautiful lake, and peacocks. Lots and lots of peacocks. But, the real reason I've ventured to Horning's is because of the the live music events they host on their natural amphitheater. After a few years of legal battles, Horning's has recently been granted venue status once again. I sadly just missed out on the annual Northwest String Summit but I can't wait to visit for another upcoming event. To be honest, I don't even like to camp but I don't mind at all when I'm at Horning's. I love spending a weekend here, listening to my favorite bands, be amongst old and new friends, sleep under the stars and trees, and enjoy all the magical beauty that Horning's has to offer. Oh, and get woken up by the peacocks. Two things about peacocks I didn't know before Horning's: they can fly up into trees and they are loud! If you're a local who hasn't yet been or an out-of-towner like me that needs a place to rejuvenate the soul, go check out Horning's Hideout. Thank you, Bob Horning, for sharing your glorious place with the rest of us.

Running up that hill! My wedding at Hornings, this is the hill at the creekside location.

This past September I got married at Hornings Hideout, creekside to be specific. I can't go on enough about how amazing the venue is. It's set close enough in to the city that getting guests to come isn't hard but it's far enough away to forget that we are so close to the city. I made jokes about my wedding, saying I was going to have hundreds of albino peacocks...little did I realize that there actually was one that greeted my at my site on arrival and right before we left the next day. Pricing is insanely cheap, that means they fill up pretty quick and if you want to get married during the Summer you better get there at least 8 months in advance! My favorite part was that on top of the super low rental fee we also go the venue for 24 hours, that left us so much time to prep and tear down without going over. Bob is one stellar dude. I couldn't have asked for a more laid back, helpful and all around friendly guy to work with during such a hectic time. He went above and beyond what was expected and I appreciate him so much.

It's so nice to be out in nature and all you can hear is the stream in the distance, the blowing of the win through the old trees and the sound of your feet on the earth. What a wicked awesome day I had playing some disc golf. Played the canyon course and was super fun/ worth it. There were some challenging holes and a lot of places to work with your mid range/ throwing putters. Looking forward to playing the other two courses the next time I come. Super convenient "pay to stay" parking meter which took your card. I was a little worried that I was going to have to pay my $4 in change! $4 for each person you bring down. Will for sure be back with some friends ready for a full day of disc golf + some lunch.

This place is a disc golf mecca. I spent a morning up here with a friend to play a round. There are 3 18-hole courses including a very difficult gold-tee course. We opted for the gold-tee course and paid dearly. We had a blast though. The course is very well laid out and offer a variety of challenges. Almost every hole involved throwing through a patch of heavy forest with some elevation change. Most baskets were perched on a hillside so even the putts were a challenge. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to enjoy the lovely lake and other amenities during my visit but they seemed very pleasant. This is a little island of utopia in the hills outside of Portland. Loved it!

At our camping spot. Beautiful night and the only ones camping there! Fully powered spots, GREAT bathrooms, and $5 5 minute showers.

The beach area is covered with lots of trees from large trees, there is plenty of room to picnic (grills available), a snack bar, restrooms, playground and lake access. This beach is closed to everyone except those that live within the boundaries of a Lake Grove School District. Fortunately I have friends who live on the canal and I'm invited out often for boat rides and to anchor and swim in the swimming hole by this beach. Water is surprisingly warmer than I ever predict, but still a cool and refreshing 77 which feels awesome on a hot summer day. This summer, 2020, we enjoyed many pop-up concerts where the band performed on a barge. Missing all the concert and movies in the park, this was a welcomed way to enjoy summer while being socially distanced. My favorite day is July 4th when the town of Lake O lights fireworks over the lake. This is open to anyone, but obviously it's super crowded so if you plan on watching from the beach, get there super early! We watch from the boat, anchoring and tying up with other boats, and then enjoy the magnificent display of fireworks and their reflection on the water while sipping wine, enjoying snacks and great conversation. It's one of my favorite nights of the year! Sadly, the fireworks were cancelled in 2020, along with most everything, but I still spent several heavenly days and evenings on the lake.

With benches and other built-in seating (retaining walls) throughout the park, there are so many places to take a break, enjoy the sights and sounds of nature or meditate. There is also a play area for the kids as well as picnic areas and a nice wood burning fireplace, and rest rooms nearby. There are also tennis courts and parking is plentiful. On this visit we ventured off to the left of the main trail and did some serious hiking up the hill, which we surprisingly discovered backs up to a nearby neighborhood. It felt like we were truly away in the woods even though civilization is so close by! This park is a true example of why I love Oregon so much. Nature is so accessible and part of the community, not separate or hard to get to. A few other people were down on the dock casting for fish, others sat on the various rock formations sort of zoning out, and it was a real pleasure to see the children and parents sharing something they really loved. If the youngsters aren't interested in the fishing, they can come down and feed the ducks - such fun. The water is so clear you can see down to rocks and plants on the bottom and also nearest the dock flashes of the goldfish as they glide along (these goldfish eventually grow into some very large carp). There are evidently some sturgeon as well along with the rainbow trout, and also lots of ducks and other water birds (a few still with babies). Oh yes, lots of dragonflies - flashes of black and fiery orange red - add to the charm. People who fish welcome you right into their society and talk readily about their fishing experiences and how the big one got away and even why. This is a terrific family experience and for those who want to come out alone. The best time is to come early, before 7, and especially after the lake has been re-stocked, if you want to catch some fish. But like I said, it's a wonderful experience whether fish are caught or not. Give it a try. And remember if you don't catch any fish, you can hike back up to the shopping center above and get some breakfast. Not a bad day at all, in fact a damn fine one if you ask me.
