I usually have a fear of going to the doctors, but they have made a lot of improvements here. I am usually seen by Jane Hwang, and she takes the time to answer my questions before, during, and after the process. Furthermore, she takes her time to explain the treatments, as well as explain how to go about it if any concerns come up after treatment. The front receptionists are also always patient and friendly. As a plus size patient and LGBTQ+ patient, I've had a wonderful experience here that has felt safe, and never are my symptoms dismissed. The most disappointing healthcare experience I've ever had. The doctors here are rushed, dismissive, and show no real interest in helping patients find meaningful solutions. Every visit feels like a checkbox, you're in, you're out, and left with more questions than answers. I've seen two different doctors through this clinic for both weight management and debilitating migraines, and each time I've left feeling unheard and defeated. Despite arriving on time to every appointment, I've consistently been seen late and then rushed through in under five minutes. When I spoke to one doctor about my inability to lose weight -- despite working out two hours a day, doing intense cardio, exceeding 10,000 steps daily, eating a gluten-free diet, and having tried multiple nutritional plans -- I was told, "You probably don't notice how many calories you're eating." That statement alone was incredibly dismissive, especially after everything I had explained. If you know me you would know I don't eat like people think every college kid eats, I don't eat maruchan soups or chips and soda. I cook everyday and make healthy and clean homage meals. If I'm doing everything "by the book" and nothing's working, shouldn't that raise concern? Instead, I was met with blame and no willingness to investigate further. As for my migraines, which are severe enough to cause nausea, vomiting, extreme light sensitivity, and missed school days, the same doctor suggested they might just be "regular headaches". I had already told her that the previous medication she prescribed didn't help, yet she showed no urgency or compassion. The final straw was being told: "You would have to make another appointment to discuss this -- I don't think you want to take time away from the next student." Like seriously such an unnecessary comment. I had made this appointment specifically for weight and migraine issues -- clearly stated in the intake form -- and she was 20 minutes late. Yet I'm the one expected to reschedule? This kind of treatment is exactly why many students avoid campus healthcare services altogether. It's disheartening, mentally exhausting, and makes you feel like giving up on finding help for serious health concerns. When you're struggling and finally take the step to seek help, the last thing you want is to be dismissed, rushed, or made to feel like a burden. If you're looking for real care, real answers, or even just human decency, this is not the place. read more

This place is a joke. They don't take you seriously for your symptoms at all even as someone who is immune compromised and had covid earlier this year. The workers here are a joke. All I needed was a gauze pad to cover up my burn and got directed to 3 different windows. Literally no one helped and one lady said I had to make an appointment to get seen or it has to be a serious wound to get a pad.I then went to the Cesar Chavez Student Center and their front desk helped me out. One of the workers brought out the whole first aid medical kit and found me a gauze pad and also gave me a couple more if I needed them. So if you need quick medical help don't go to the Student Health Center, (ironically) go to CCSC! read more

YOU PAY FOR THIS IN YOUR TUITION SFSTATE STUDENTS! So use it to your advantage! Great facility with helpful staff and doctors. I don't have health insurance and it's expensive just to get my own plan, so this is where I go. I was always seen even if I just walked in. I never had to wait too long, 30 minutes tops to see a doctor. Getting prescription medications is never a hassle either. Unlike other pharmacies such as CVS or Walgreens, there's never a long line. I am able to get my prescription for a cheaper price and head out the door without having to pay upfront costs as it gets charged onto my student account (you pay at the bursars). read more

These Health Services are what you pay for within that long list of fees in your tuition. I think more students need to take advantage of what offered here! There's people that can educate you about different types of birth controls and can provide you with condoms and pregnancy tests when needed! They even test for HIV here which is great! They do have walk in appointments if they have time but I would highly suggest making an appointment in advance so you can choose a doctor that you would like to speak to. Warning--this is kind of graphic! It was just a regular day, and I was making a big salad for lunch before I left for school. One minute I'm opening a can of olives and the next minute the top of the can disappears into my thumb, which in turn is gaping open and blood is gushing out in amounts I've never seen before. I call my husband and he comes home from work just up the road, and we try to decide what to do. Stitches are definitely in order, and soon; I'm starting to feel lightheaded from the loss of blood and aborted state of lunch. I'm uninsured. I don't want to go to General and wait forever, miss all my classes and leave with a humongous bill. All of a sudden, a thought occurs to me...maybe SF State's health center can take care of me. My husband calls them for me while I lean over the sink, blood still gushing, and voila! An hour and a half later I leave the student health center no longer bleeding, with six stitches in my poor thumb and my arm aching from a tetanus shot. Cost? Absolutely free. Wait? None to speak of. I actually have a written note from the doctor exusing me from writing or typing for the next week! But, I have four final papers due (not to mention some Yelping) so I'm doing the ol' 9-fingered typing trick these days. Oh well... The doctor was awesome and nice, and the whole experience was as pleasant as possible given the circumstances. Being dependent and stuck on my parents health insurance blows, especially when you now live 30 miles from your usual doctor. It sucks when you blow off changing over your doctor after moving and when you're finally sick and too weak to even deal with changing over your paperwork, right when you need medical attention the most, is when you cry that you didn't do it sooner. Welcome to the story of my life. I think I'll blow off that doctor changing paperwork a little longer now that I know this place has my back as long as I'm paying tuition. AND THERE ARE NO STUPID CO-PAYS, AWESOME! The SFSU Student Health Services Center saved me from what was a month-long post-21st-birthday-in-Vegas hangover from hell. Turns out it the beating my body was taking wasn't exactly normal; it was bronchitis AND laryngitis, who knew?! ....Dr. Teresa Rebeiro, that's who! She made sure I got my antibiotics along with cough syrup, pronto. The in-house pharmacy here had everything ready in about ten minutes after my evaluation with the doctor. The fees get tacked onto your student financial statement so you can conveniently pay them online or in person at the Bursar's office if you prefer. Getting an appointment was a breeze and paperwork was minimal. What a relief. Thank you for saving my ass just in time for the fall semester. I don't know what I would've done if I got kicked out of those courses had I been too sick to show up on the first day. read more

I went here back in December 2010 because I had been having some pretty bad abdominal pain and no appetite for about a day. I'm pretty sure it was caused by food poisoning from Shitty Eats oh I'm sorry "City" Eats, because it started happening right after I ate there. Anyway, the process was very simple. I took a number. They called it. I filled out several forms. They called me in, and had a nurse take my temperature and all of the other vitals. I waited in one of their rooms for just a few minutes and then a doctor (I believe Dr. Molino was his name) came in to examine me. He was very nice. He listened courteously to everything that I had to say, asked me a bunch of questions, and told me that it was probably a minor case of food poisoning. He told me to rest and he gave me some acetaminophen tablets for free, if the pain got really bad. I was in and out of there in probably 20 minutes total. GREAT service. Overall, utilizing this place is a great idea because 1) it's free (you pay for it with your tuition), 2) The doctors and nurses there are really nice and know their stuff, 3) If you need medication, they have a pharmacist (there is a small fee though). 5 stars all the way read more

I am freaking out because I'm going to graduate this spring and then who will indulge my hypochondria!?!? Seriously, the staff and faculty at SHS are so nice and professional. I've gone in for a number of "just in case" checkups and never once felt like an a-hole for wasting their time. They were always patient and willing to run superfluous tests to assure me that that freckle is not melanoma, my fatigue is not lymphoma, my chest pain IS in fact just anxiety (Anxiety, me? Can you believe it?!?) and not a heart attack, etc, etc. And also, the times where there actually WAS something wrong with me, I got prompt and thorough care, had everything explained to me, all my options for treatment mapped out, and usually got hooked up with some killer meds. I am so very grateful for the health center. The times they have helped me when I was about to burst into tears is numerous (and I am not a very weepy person). I remember when I first moved to San Francisco and didn't have a doctor, it was a comfort to visit them. They truly care and I have always felt amazed that I could walk in there anytime and get amazing health care. Eczema? Prescription cream. Infection? Antibiotics Feeling dizzy? Blood test and stress test. I have gone there for so many ailments and each time, they have thoroughly helped me. Their pharmacy is cheaper than most. Their tests (such as blood and urine) are free. The center is staffed with real doctors, many of which dedicate time outside the center to help lower income communities. If only all health care was this accessible. It is worth the amount of money they charge each semester. I don't think people truly appreciate it until they wake up one morning with worrisome symptoms but can't get an appointment with their real doctor for 1-2 weeks. Wait 30 minutes at the health center and they will ease your worries. read more

If you're a student here, you should already know that as part of your tuition you are paying for the Health center so you might as well use it as much as you can to get your money's worth. The staff is great-- always attentive and very cordial in person and on the phone. I ran into one feisty staff member who did not want to help answer my questions on the phone and sounded like she didn't want to deal with me but hey, that was once and we all have our bad days and I still got the answers I needed. Okay, first time I came here with a dermatological problem. I took a number, waited foreverrrrrrrrrr, just to realize that i was waiting to make an appointment for another time. Grrrr.... I sat down with a nurse to make an appointment and left, little did I know that she changed my name and birthday and my entire identity. She, literally, scheduled someone else for an appointment that was meant to be mines. So, I had to go back to the health center and explain to the other nurse that this had happened. At first, she was hesitant to change the appointment to my name, but she eventually did it. She gave me the earliest appointment possible on Wednesday morning and I went in, was immediately attended to and left a happy camper with a bagful of medical wonders. I'm paying tuition and I have no medical insurance so I'm gonna continue using these services. read more

Theres a long wait sometimes, even though there is NO ONE there. Do NOT go during lunch hours...a waste of time. Some doctors are nice, the young ones, the older ones do not like questions, they get very offended. Also do not go when you have a flu/cold, they cant help you. They only tell you to drink more water and rest. Pretty cheap I guess..use it, you already paid for it in your tuition. read more

I don't go to State anymore but I definitely took advantage of the Student Health Services when I attended. See, I grew up without health insurance so I didn't do the regular physical checkup thing. My philosophy was, and for the most part, still is, "Eh, I'll just sweat it out." I didn't utilize their general practice much but I was all about the women's health services. All of the staff and doctors in women's health were kind, helpful, and the wait was never long. Well, one time I did wait over an hour for my appointment only to be passed along to an unfamiliar doctor but that was only because my doctor was helping a hysterical patient, so that was understandable. All of the doctors that I encountered really cared about my well-being and took the time to educate as well as treat me - all good things for a young woman who had never been examined so personally before. The optometry department is awesome too. When I came here, the optometrists were students from Berkeley so they were kind of required to do a good job. It wasn't until I started to working full time and had to start dealing with the hell that is Kaiser that I really appreciated the SF State Student Health Center. Oh, how I miss the days when I can get birth control and contact lenses on the cheap. read more

I was able to make an appointment online. I was able to walk in the door and be seen and I was able to leave in a little over an hour. I came here for a strained back muscle injury and got Dr. Stoehr. He was wonderful with really taking the time to figure out what was wrong with my back injury. He really did a thorough job with making sure I didn't have any disk or spinal issues. The medicine he prescribed for my specific allergens to certain drugs really helped the pain. I also appreciated his follow up call. Great doctor will absolutely going back to him if I ever get any more sports related injuries! this health center rocks. as someone who is prone to every imaginable disease and disorder known to (wo)man...they have saved my ass many times. kidney stone...they hooked it up. sinus infection...they hooked it up. viral meningitis...they hooked it up. reaction to latex...they hooked it up. everyone is nice and compassionate and they seem like they really care about their patients, which is rare nowadays. and it's cheap and you hardly ever have to wait. best hundred bucks ever spent. period. read more

With recent budget cuts making it difficult to get classes, students are paying more in tuition and getting less for the money. This means that I'm gonna be taking advantage of all the student services offered to me - technically not free since I pay a fee included in my tuition each year. But for a public clinic, these guys got their sh*t together. The staff is organized and tells it like it is - no frills, but a lot of heart. These guys work around the clock to treat a number of inflictions and are discreet and give timely feedback where your most private medical affairs are concerned. Minus one star for needing a prescription for condoms...? Head over to EROS in the student center and they'll hook you up. read more

Once upon a time I actually had a job and had to pay for my health insurance. Now I'm a full-time student and seriously taking advantage of the perks... like SFSU Student Health Services. I got a bunch of goodies like condoms and lube and if I need a prescription or need a blood test, I can get one for free. Yay Family PACT! Sure, the wait can really be irritating, but when was the last time you ever got right through the door at a doctor's office whether you were at California Pacific or Kaiser or St. Mary's? Also, if you want to make an appointment, you can call them and schedule one up instead of waiting in line. I can't recall the doctor that gave me my pap but she was gentle and it wasn't too awkward. However, it's a little awkward to publicly talk about getting a pap. read more

I love the Student Health Center. Every doctor I have seen has been immensely helpful and better than any other doctor I have seen. I am so grateful that the first doctor I saw, Dr. Wong, took the time to get my medical history and inform me that the birth control I was taking was not only was likely causing my migraines but also putting me at a high risk for a stroke. She switched my off that medication and I haven't had a migraine in over a year. I've also seen Dr. Gamo twice, who is awesome, and just had a women's exam with another great doctor who warned me to never take estrogen again because of the high risk of stroke. I would have NEVER known this had I not gone to the SHS last year to deal with my migraines. I even saw other doctors before I attended SFSU about my migraines and they never thought to ask me if I was on birth control. So basically, the doctors here may have saved my life. (Over dramatic I know, but seriously based on the research I've done, my risk for a stroke was high before they switched my medication). Their services are also great. I've have a few tests done there (cause my awesome doctors want to make sure I am healthy and test me for all sorts of stuff) and the lab people are super nice. The nurse who took my blood was so sweet and completely put me at ease. Also the pharmacy is great, they always fill my prescriptions quickly. I give this place tons of praise for being thorough, helpful and completely awesome. I am going to be so sad next year when I will no longer be a student and I can't take advantage of their awesome medical services. read more

There are good doctors, and nurses here. I come here to get check-ups and when I am sick. There are sometimes long waits and then there are times I am seen right away. Good pharmacy and they fill prescriptions very quickly. The prescriptions are cheap to fill and you don't have to pay to see a doctor. Over all good place to see a doctor and since its included in the tuition, its a no brainer to come here. read more

You can get a same day appointment and your visit is free. Dr. Wong was so nice and helpful. She took time to listen and ask questions and answered all of mine. You can get your Rx filled right there within 15min as well. I wish I had known about this sooner. There is even an urgent care as well. read more

Leslie just gave me my flu shot and she was AWESOME! I'm super squeamish so she had me lie down and gave me the shot that way. She stayed with me and brought me a snack and took my bp to make sure I was okay. When I was ready to leave, she walked around the center with me to make sure I wasn't dizzy. This is a toughy. On one hand, their gynecologists are amazing and so nice, with great bedside manners. The pharmacy is quick and usually have your prescription in stock. It is easy to make an appointment--many of which can be same-day. Your $100/semester fee covers all the lab fees and doctor visits. And, if you join Family PACT all your feminine exams, prescriptions, birth control, etc are free! The drawback: Their regular primary care doctors SUCK. The doctors I've seen there were totally pushy and bitchy with lousy bedside manners. And, I recently found out that if you buy the CSU health insurance plan (outside of the $100 fee) you aren't allowed to see the SFSU psychiatrist or counselors. This is ridiculous because you pay $100 a semester to have access to those services. If you just want to check in with someone while you are at school, they punish you for being smart by buying full insurance. So weak. Overall: Go there for your ObGyn annual exam and see your outside doctor for all the rest. read more

Wow, I was so impressed with most of the staff, not all, but most. It's my second semester at SFSU and I didn't know that they had such a huge clinic that provided all kinds of medical services. I dropped in to make an appt because I thought there'd be a looooong wait, but luckily I was able to see a doctor immediately. I did wait for 15-20 minutes, but it was really nothing compared to what I had expected. EVERYONE who is a student should definitely take advantage of the free services at the SHS because sadly, we fork out a couple of hundred dollars each semester for health fees. Meant with Dr. Duzak and he was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely come back if I need to. read more

If I could give no starts I would. I gave it one for the half ass service I got. I really don't think our tuition is going to anything at this school. I had the displeasure of getting services from this Dr. Josef something I forgot his freaking last name. I went in because my throat was sore and a little swollen. He comes in and starts to examine my throat through this process he seemed sloppy and unprofessional and not very attentive he uses a popsicle stick to examine my mouth and misses my mouth and then kind of bumps the stick on my mouth, then he grabs the device to check my ears and let's the cord yank my bun on my head and at this point my head is being kinda yanked, then he turns the faucet on does not use soap and barely soaks his hands in the water. Lastly he tells me I might have this sickness and to go get a blood test, so I go and after 5 min he says I'm fine and don't have anything and to rest and if the swelling gets worse to come back. WAIT WHAATTT?? I don't remember any blood test that gives results that quick and the severity of my throat could get worse and he's telling me to waited out? Fucking pathetic and ridiculous if you ask me! Then at the end he tells me how I need to rest and eat healthy and drink lots of fluids then he emphasized the fact of how I'm dark skinned and need to be out in the sun REALLY??!!! How the fuck did we go from a throat issue and after care to your dark you need the sun. Subtle racism at its finest lady's and gentlemen!! Never fails. I had a feeling he was a prejudice jackass just by the 5 min encounter I had with him but thought I was overreacting and being nitpicky and that's exactly how passive aggressive subtle racism works! So Fuck him! and don't go to that guy especially people of color request someone else because his sloppy service will get you misdiagnosed. Just don't come here! read more
