The hardware was a little dated, but that actually adds to the appeal for me. Only two machines were broken and neither one was one-of-a-kind so there were other options. This could be looked at as a pro or a con, but the gym was extremely empty; no more than five or six members there at any given moment. Day pass is $10. Overall, if I lived in the area I would give it a few more chances to see if the atmosphere and clientele picked up at different times/days. Pros: Multiple dumbbell racks so people using 30 lbs or below were in one area, 35 lbs through 80 lbs was a second area, and anything above 80 lbs was a third area. Cons: Some benches were awkwardly placed, up against walls so you could not fit a spotter behind you, or pooled in the middle of the free weights in a hodgepodge of disarray. Only one employee was working, and they were sitting at the front desk, so there was no one on the floor maintaining order and cleanliness. There was only one 90 lb and one 100 lb dumbbell, so unless you're doing single-armed workouts, those two are useless. Dumbbells above 100 lbs go up by 10 lb increments, so you go from 95 lbs to 110 lbs. Music was quiet and not motivational, but most people listen to their own music anyway. No windows in any weight-lifting areas so it felt slightly like a basement, however vaulted ceilings helped. It was slightly warmer than I would've liked.

Now at 68, after years of personal training with Jeff and amazing classes with Jessica, I am strong. I just had two knees replaced, and my fast and full recovery has surprised everyone. Had I not been connected with Back Cove all these years, I do not believe this would be the case. I enthusiastically recommend Back Cove to anyone of any age. They saved me!

Jessica has Cardio Tabata class Mondays at 6pm which I would describe as cardio/strength interval training where people rotate between different exercise stations. It is a great workout and keeps your blood pumping and heart rate up throughout the class. On Wednesdays at 6pm, she does a strength bootcamp class which is similar to Mondays class. We use free weights, interval training, "yoga bands" I'm not sure what they're called haha. Classes are a lot of fun and it's a great atmosphere, everyone is really welcoming to newcomers and very friendly. I've only been going for about a month and I can feel myself getting stronger, and I've lost about 10 lbs (I've been eating healthier, too). Jessica is a great instructor, and she also meets with people one-on-one for personal fitness training. At Back Cove they offer other services as well, you can receive individual personal fitness instruction, fitness rehabilitation, senior fitness, metabolic recovery, ski fitness, stroller fitness, and posture alignment (check out their website/facebook page for class schedules). The facility is very clean and well maintained. I definitely recommend the classes. It's a fun time and great workout for all stages of fitness.

Since I'm a student, I'm constantly looking for the best deals for any and everything, including gyms/workout classes. I have yet to find a workout as satisfying or inexpensive as Dynamics boot camp classes. You can get a single class for $7.50 or a 10 class pack for $60. You can also share your classes with other people, so you could split a pack with someone, which not many places allow you to do! I have yet to leave this place without shaking a bit and already knowing I'll be very sore the next day. No matter how many people are in the class (I've been in classes with as many as 30 or as few as 6), it's always a good workout. I've also taken classes from a few of the different trainers and love them all. They each have a slightly different style, but you'll get a great total body workout no matter what. The last thing I love about these classes is that there is ZERO judgement from anyone - your fellow attendees or the trainers. The trainers always give options for modifications or show ways to make the move easier (or harder). Everyone is going through the class to the best of their ability and all classes are completed with clapping and high fives all around. The trainers even make sure to go around to everyone and give them a high five and say "good job!" Seriously check this place out if you can!!!

The crowd is 95% female, but don't let that dissuade you if you aren't - it's a very welcoming group of students (and teachers). I felt like I fit in right away and am glad to add my yang to the yin. If you don't know anything about cycling (like me, at first), they will go over how to set up your bike. And, if you forget, they will more than happily go over it with you the next (or next, or next) time. You will get a great workout, listen to some awesome music and be in a community full of friendly people. What more could you want? Only drawback is that classes fill up QUICKLY, so you may have to reserve well in advance - and they do have a penalty if you don't "unreserve" within a set amount of time (I think 10 hours, and it definitely isn't enough time as a lot can happen within 10 hours). But that's the only negative in a vast ocean of positives.

I remember searching last summer for pole dancing classes and not being able to find any. This year…read moremy search led me to hustle and flow -- tucked in the west end near Reiche elementary, this is a little gem on the third floor where you can try being J. Lo for an hour, and stick around if you really like it. Heather is the primary teacher and Victoria is her teacher aid in training. Both have their own styles and both are mesmerizing to watch. Their pole classes work a bit differently than their others -- you're required to take a few intro pole classes to see if you like it and get to feel your body and how everything works, and then they can recommend you to the level 1 class. I've been wanting to try it out since a friend of mine told me how sexy it made her feel. The intro classes are easy in a sense where you're not huffing and puffing, but hard in the sense where you're using and twisting your body in ways you're probably not used to. They start you off with some warm ups -- a combination of regular stretching with yoga and warming up the joint muscles, then rotate through several pole moves to try out. I don't look good at all, but it's quite fun! The classes are small but you do share a pole with one other person, which gives you time to take a break. Some people like bringing their 10inch heels and trying it out that way, but I like sticking to the bare toes. In the summer it's slightly warm so the feet stick more (making turns have more friction). Definitely try it out, the teachers are great and never make you feel bad about messing up!
