For those who have taken class in NYC, Studio Harmonic has a sort of STEPS-like feeling. Perhaps a Pineapple Dance-like feeling for those Londoners reading this. Many different teachers, a funky multiple studio space, ranges of classes from Classical Ballet to Modern Jazz to Floor Barre to Michael Jackson-style Hip Hop, dancers of all levels from your grandma or daughter to a Paris Opera grand étoile...
I can't speak to the quality across the wide range of classes offered here.
I can recommend:
- classical ballet with Wayne Byars. Tons of people and characters, but very good, centering, a few yoga-esque stretches mixed in. I've also tried Robert Bral's stretching class--lots of thera-band work. good cross-training for a dancer. I know that the 11 am M-F contemporary class is very popular too, usually with Nathalie Pubellier.
- the home-made quiche available at the cafe inside.
- using a locker for free. ask for the key at the front desk. i think you have to leave a 1 euro deposit or something...
- their website. I personally find most websites for Paris-based businesses, if they exist, to be out-of-date and unhelpful. At least on their website, you can find useful, up-to-date information about hours, class rates, studio closings, etc.
- the location--you hop off at metro Bastille (line 1, 8, 5) and you are in the heart of a very diverse, happening area! Studio Harmonic is nicely tucked into this area...
Some negatives:
- a single class is expensive (more expensive than elsewhere in Paris): 18 euros. It gets less expensive per class if you purchase a 10/20/50-class card...
- they are closed for the rest of the summer! :(
