I feel like if a company requires you to put down a credit card to book the appointment, it should also have staff prepared to receive phone calls so you can let them know, for example, that you're running late due to traffic (a car accident on market) and so you can ask if it's worth coming 10 min late to a 30 min appointment or rescheduling for later. No such luck at this studio unfortunately so I'm on my way with zero clue if they can fit me in at all or if they're going to send me away and still charge me a penalty fee. So here I sit in traffic; I've left a voicemail but no clue if my call with get returned given that my appointment is 4 minutes from now. ----- UPDATE turns out they usually do have a front desk girl and she unfortunately just wasn't there today! Despite being on the other side of the city than my house I was quite pleased with my visit to Soothe. Dana greeted me with a warm smile and a solid handshake (call me crazy, but I honestly think you can tell a lot about a person by a simple handshake) and immediately my blood pressure went down and I felt a sense of calmness come over me. Dana was very thorough in her diagnostic evaluation of my skin and made sure my at-home regiment was suitable for my needs and if it wasn't, she made realistic recommendations at low cost options without seeming like she was trying to make a profit off of me. After explaining what my problem area's were she quickly diagnosed the right treatment for me and went to work. Dana stopped at nothing to make sure I was comfortable, relaxed and was receiving the best treatment possible based on my specific needs. I can tell you with confidence, this being two weeks post facial, that my facial was not only relaxing but extremely effective. My skin has been thanking me ever since I treated it to a heavenly hour with Dana. I like my facialists to have flawless skin. Maybe it's prejudice, but I also want my dentist to have fantastic teeth. Be your own advertisement, I say! The woman who did my facial at Soothe had glowing, milky-white skin, so I knew I was in good hands. I noticed that many reviews mention the owner, London, as the facialist. This woman was named Jeska, but she was good, as well. Her words were very positive, and her touch was relaxing. Also, she didn't breathe all over me, which I've experienced at other spas. Unless you have angelic, wrinkle-healing breath, please keep your burrito lunch to yourself. Five stars because she used this cool lightsaber thing on my face. I'm always hesitant committing myself to spending a good chunk of money on something without knowing more (or at least having a substantial number of reassuring Yelp reviews available) ahead of time, but I found myself in dire need of a massage last week -- after realizing it'd be over 6 months without any kind of bodywork -- and was fortunate enough to find a next-day appointment here with Bokhara. I was definitely not disappointed. I was immediately greeted at the front desk at this lovely little -- and beautifully decorated and peaceful -- spa and given some paperwork to fill out prior to the massage. I really liked how the back of the paper, which required my initials pretty much everywhere, included several statements emphasizing the spa's commitment to client satisfaction and stressed how much they valued customer input during and after an appointment because, after all, that's really the only way the practitioners could know what was and wasn't working. Well said! I also appreciated Bokhara's overall attentive and calming presence throughout the massage (I opted for the 75-minute deluxe massage featured on their booking page). She really listened to what I told her I wanted -- a lot of focus on the hands and feet -- and allowed me to fully relax through the entire session. I often feel obligated to carry on a conversation during a massage, but on that day I really needed to tune out, and she invited me to do just that from the moment I was on the table. Lastly, I was impressed by the amount of strength and control Bokhara had for her very petite frame. When I first met her, I did anticipate that I'd be asking her to apply more pressure during the massage, but I didn't need to ask her for anything different the entire time. In addition to wishing I'd booked an even longer massage, the only thing that could use improvement is the soundproofing in the massage rooms. Whenever people came in or out, I could clearly hear their conversations. Until they attend to the physical adjustments that need to be made to better block the noises, it would be nice if the other employees made an effort to keep their voices down -- which is what Bokhara did -- and actively encourage clients to do the same to preserve the peaceful nature of the spa. read more

The deep tissue massage I received from Kristy could cure world peace. I was running 10-15 minutes late due to the rain and she was completely understanding. I offered to deduct that time from my massage, but she refused and still gave me the full 60 minutes. Her hands are magic. I had a ton of knots in the neck/upper back and I left feeling so light and loose. I highly recommend Kristy for light-medium pressure, which is what I requested, though she mentioned she specializes in harder pressure. This was such a good experience. The interior is welcoming and intimate. 10/10 will come again. read more

If you're looking for a real clinical facial, DO NOT go to Soothe. I had two disappointing experiences trying to get my acne prone pores extracted here. The only reason I went back a second time was because the owner offered me a gift certificate to make up for the service I paid for but did not receive... and then they charged me $15 extra because, according to the esthetician, their prices are changing all the time. I looked on their website, and the only $15 extra charge was for extra extractions. Heck, where were the initial extractions I paid for? My new esthetician gal (at a different business, of course), whom I promise never to stray from, does extractions for about 45 minutes, as has every other person I've received a clinical facial from. The first lady at Soothe worked for, oh, about 5 minutes. Lame. The second one was a little better and worked for maybe 5 or so minutes longer. Big help that was, I went home with 2 huge barneys on my cheek and on my chin - which I had to take care of. If you're looking for a more passive experience, and just want your skin majorly exfoliated - then this would be the place for you. If you want your skin to be alleviated of city stress and pollution and have actual extractions, my advice is to try somewhere else - otherwise you could end up wasting your time and money like I did AND have to spend more bucks on another person to do the job right the first time! I can appreciate and be glad for anyone who has had a good experience at Soothe, but unfortunately, I did not get what I paid for and also found London (the owner) to be extremely defensive the second time I went to her with my sob story. The first time she had apologized for getting it wrong and even sent me a note - nice gesture. The second time I received a rude email from her suggesting that I was a problem client - when in fact, besides these experiences at Soothe, I've only moved on from a business if I didn't think they were using sanitary practices or if their prices were too high for regular on-going treatment. Don't waste your time here if you're looking for the full-on clinical treatment. There are SO many other estheticians in this city who are capable, professional and thorough. read more

This place is a nice neighborhood joint, very small and tucked away a few blocks from the panhandle. I got a massage from Gayle W. She was a great therapist who focused exactly on the areas I mentioned and really had a wonderful touch. She worked out a big kink in my shoulder and she combined the smooth and thorough kneading of the massage with a little aromatherapy. Gayle was really responsive to the different muscles and nerves in my body. She combined kneading with some manipulation of the arms and pressure on the pressure points. Clearly an experienced masseuse. The massage was finished off with hot towels to lightly rub off the massage lotion. I enjoyed it completely. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend and they also give gift certificates; it would be a nice treat for another person as well. This is not the cheapest place in SF to get a massage, but I think definitely worth it considering the high quality. read more

I'd only had a facial once before, like, five years ago, and so I thought that all facials were done in ambiance-less clinical rooms with face melting steamers and estheticians lecturing your about fancy acne-treatments you need to buy. London's my new jam. I had a glass of rose tea while she set up the room (I was 15 minutes early) and then I got super cozy on the table (bed? What are these things called?) under the covers. I'm a freak about smells and aromatherapy, so I really appreciated that the intake form I filled out had a section for smells: Floral, woody, citrusy, etc. I like floral and woody smells, and the products London used all smelled amazing. The room was very warm (vibe-wise) and relaxing, the steamer was awesome and never felt overwhelming, and the facial treatment was exactly what I was looking for -- natural and exfoliating with some extractions, never stingy or chemical-y. My favorite part, though, was the neck, shoulder, and arm massage I got with the facial. I take 3+ hours of classical ballet classes every week and have been a burlesque/pole performer on and off for years, so my muscles are almost always in need of TLC. I have had a number of massages all over the Bay Area, and this shoulder rub down was tip-top. I loved the aromatherapy so much that I picked up a Skin and Bones jojoba/ylang ylang cleaner on the way out and it is my new favorite. If you need some serious relaxing and pampering, Soothe is the spot! read more

After two very brutal, high pressure, work-at-all-hours years in San Francisco, I finally did a good thing for myself at the start of 2011: I found a great massage therapist - Gayle - at Soothe (thanks to positive Yelp reviews for the salon). I gave 2-3 other places a go before Soothe, and it's been Gayle ever since, every month. First, on Soothe itself - it's a small, charming salon with two small rooms, but they don't scrimp on products, towels, or the experience (padded, heated tables with fluffy blankets). Gayle is an exceptional, skilled aesthetician. She listens, knows just where to focus (for example, after an intense travel period, she could feel the tension in my calves and neck, and work it), and of course, she can change pressure depending on what your needs are. She really takes time to get to know your body and works every muscle deeply; I come out of every session feeling amazing. I know a lot of people love using Groupon, LivingSocial, etc. deals at salons all around the city. If that's your schtick -- getting a deal, good for you. But if you're serious about working with a professional who can help you out long-term, I highly recommend you find someone you are comfortable with, trust, and does excellent work, and stick with it for a while. This woman is easily the most outstanding esthetician in San Francisco. I have seen the inside of more skin care salons than I care to remember, and am happy to have found the creme de la creme to pamper and nurture me. London's organic ingredients (never leave my sensitive skin irriated the way some facials can!) and gentle touch are sublime and always manage to leave me feeling relaxed, looking like the Queen of Sheba, and feeling like a million bucks. On top of that, her hilarious, down to earth personality makes me feel at ease - not tense like some uptight skin care divas can. I'll never see another esthetician again. After reading all the glowing reviews for Soothe I booked an appointment. I had to book a few months out. My facial was fine and I was interested in continuing to visit the spa. I was told more than once that they are very busy because of Yelp. Perhaps too busy to worry about customers. I requested a day far in advance and was told that London would have to email me to schedule the appointment. I never got any response. I wasn't surprised by this I felt they feel they have plenty of business. I am happy for their success but I think I will find a spa were I feel like I count. read more

My skin is in good shape to the naked eye. I have had $70 dollar facials that have rocked my world. So for $130 dollars I expect to have radiant, glowing skin that would bring all the boys to the yard. I didn't. I was told repeatedly that facials can only do so much and that laser was the way to go. Hmm...I didn't know I was making an appt with Dr. Evil! ;-) Extractions lasted 3.5 minutes and I haven't had a facial in about 4 months so I knew there was some work to do. The warmth of its interior and the professionalism of its proprietors make Soothe *seriously* cozy, welcoming and gratifying on a level you never experienced in your first SF apartment. As you enter their space on a sleepy block of Hayes Street, the warm red hues of the walls and the engaging aromas of eucalyptus and ylang ylang that float into the nose subtly ease in a sense of knowing comfort before you even hit the table. And once you're horizontal - boy - you won't want to get back up! I went to see Terri after running the Oakland Half Marathon and I was in a world of H-U-R-T! My everything was sore, even my muscle's muscles were aching. Now, I wasn't sure what to expect from a petite female therapist, but I have to tell you, she worked the knots out of me, got as deep as anyone as I've ever seen and - not exaggerating - wound up providing one of my all-time best massages. She balanced deep pressure with great awareness in her touch, checking in frequently to make sure I was comfortable with the level of pressure and letting me know what she was doing at times along the way. She asked me my musical preference and explained the different aromatherapies she incorporated (at my request for no additional charge). At the end of the treatment, I felt loose, easy and energized, much like I did after slamming a sixer of Red Bull on Spring Break 2005. I'm kidding...kinda sorta. Now the only thing I regret about visiting Soothe was getting a 60-minute session when I could've opted for 90. Next time I'll know better and go long! read more

In fact, I need to go back to all my reviews and rethink my "false-high" ratings for many, many restaurants and the like after experience the high quality service of London Elise and the Soothe experience. It is so very very rare to find a business person who truly understands the customer service, the service service, and folow through care you need in a personal/body care profession. London Elise can and will set the standard in this town! The place is small, peaceful, Zen-like and calming. It is not uber-trendoid, set in a large upscale Marina or FiDi location and full of ladies who lunch with silicon. This is the place for chill people with needs like your's and mine. First of all, London "gets me", my needs, your needs, and just about any city dweller's needs to get out of the (1) fog, (2) stress, (3) bum-filled sidewalks and into some peaceful retreat. She wisks you into a comfy bed, asks you all your preferences and special requirements. For me, having more allergies than the Boy in the Bubble, she had a s*&List to deal with I assure you. We talked and talked and talked, and I still managed to fall asleep on the bed. The place is beautiful and artfully arranged. Joan is a really gifted massage therapist. I followed recommendations from other Yelpers and tried Soothe when my usual therapist in Noe Valley was completely booked. She was funny and thoughtful, and asked great questions at the beginning. More so, she didn't back away from what surely looked like a challenge, as I walked in the door after finishing a particularly trying quarter at work and probably looked like a sizzling ball of stress with a crazed fixed smile on my face. The best word I could use to describe Joan's style is "deliberate." She located a knot that was linked to countless lifts of heavy bags into overhead bins and hours at the computer, and went at it with dogged determination for at least ten or fiftteen minutes until it was gone. Most massage therapists seem to get bored with this kind of challenge, or feel like they should move on after a while to cover the usual circuit included in an hour-long booking, but thankfully Joan understood my chronic shoulder pain was probably sourced from here and was going to show this knot exactly who was boss. This review is belated, but very necessary. Two summers ago, I was looking to get a massage to relieve the stress and tension built up while studying for my board exam. After begrudgingly reading through hundreds of Yelp reviews, I decided to come to Soothe. Scheduling was a breeze - easily completed online. Prices were fair and comparable to other massage studios in the area. I booked myself with Daniel Davies, the only therapist who was available on such short notice. I was apprehensive about having a massage with a male practitioner, being that it was my first time, but reassured myself that all would go well. I arrived early on my scheduled day, and just as I got to the door, I was greeted warmly by the receptionist and offered a cup of tea. The ambiance was soothing, quiet, and comfortable. I instantly felt at peace. Daniel introduced himself soon after, and took me into the studio. It was dimly lit, with scents of lavender and other florals I can't readily identify. We discussed my problem areas and the pressure I was comfortable with, and before I knew it, we were 30 minutes in and every second was pure bliss! Daniel is very talented and not to mention, personable. He made sure that I was at ease the whole way through. His overall demeanor was warm and comforting. He was very mindful of maintaining a peaceful environment, moving about the room carefully and shifting about as if afraid to disturb me. This was much appreciated! Before I knew it, the massage was over, and I felt rejuvenated. All of my problem spots, namely my shoulders and neck, felt loose and totally relaxed. I felt like a new person! I was dropped off unknowingly yesterday - forced to get a massage - in the midst of an intense phase of to-do's - I resisted even walking to the door... was greeted by Debbie and things began turning around from there. Wow. I have never had anyone treat my lower back the way it craves to be undone. Ever. I slept like a rock, woke up perfectly sore, enlivened, and completely shifted from "not enough time" to "there is time for everything". I love this place! Ever since I moved back to the neighborhood 10 months ago I have been coming to Soothe for their waxing services. The atmosphere is calming and the price is a solid $10 cheaper than other places in the city I have gone, though the experience doesn't reflect that. I rotate between Dana and London (depending on availability) and adore them both. Both are professional, personal, and make me feel like I am their priority at that moment. I recently had my first facial here with Dulce. She was great! My skin looked visibly more radiant and smooth afterwards. I can't wait to try more of their services. I am hooked! read more

I scheduled my first massage here 2 weeks ago with Mandie. I decided to go for the 75 minute hot stone massage. Great decision on my part. First, I love this place because it's only about 5 blocks from my house...a total of 15 minutes to walk there. Score! Second, I walk in and I think I was the only customer there, which meant I wouldn't have to wait for a room to open up (i.e. Massage Envy). Double Score! Leading up to the massage, Mandie was very thorough in finding out what was bringing me in to get the massage, any sore spots, etc. The actual massage was amazing. She chose the P-E-R-F-E-C-T scent for aromatherapy...I have no idea what it was (and stupidly didn't think to ask), but it was incredible. The whole thing was incredible. I went to see Dana today for a facial and peel and she was amazing! She is so sweet and made me completely relax in the warm, heated bed. Her extractions were throrough, her knowledge of my skin was very impressive for a first encounter and she did not put the peel on my chin which is currently extremely dehydrated from some peel pads I am using at home (not using after today!). I really trust her to take care of my skin and make the best decisions so as to keep my skin clear and glowing. I was not pushed to buy products at all and was given a few free samples to try at home - I LOVE free samples! If you book your appointment in person, you receive $10 off your next treatment. She is also really good at the shoulder and hand massage - I am a very stressed out tense person, but after leaving soothe, I was ready for a Lush bath and a nap. I highly recommend this place. I used to see London a few years ago - floted around for a while since I was new to the city and have committment issues - but I can tell you that this place has not slipped a notch. I came here about 4 months ago looking for some relief for my dark dark eyebrows and impossibly blonde highlights. London was so on point. She is a bad ass lady for sure. She was like sweetheart don't even do it! Don't you highlight your eyebrows. Let me tell you there are plenty of women who do that down in LA where I am from and when their roots start growing in it looks like spiders coming out of their eyebrows. Don't you do it! I've been going here for about a year now and it is bar-none the best facial I've ever received. London will take care of your skin *and* your soul. I've been to Dana too and she is also fantastic. They use all organic products and really tailor the facial to your skin needs. Extractions are extensive and not too painful - most importantly the post-extraction redness is minimal. I'm joining the chorus. I made an appointment for a brow tinting. I thought that it would make a difference concealing my sparse brows. When I arrived at Soothe, London told me that my brows were too dark to be altered by the tint. She offered to do it or to cancel the appointment. And she reassured me that I didn't have sparse brows. I was disappointed -- perhaps it should have been obvious that tinting has a significant effect only on blondes and redheads. But I was also surprised because I've never known an esthetician to tell me that a certain service would be a waste of money. London has such a friendly and empathetic attitude though that I walked out of the studio feeling relaxed. Hopefully in the near future I will try the services at Soothe. This was my second time here and it was just as good as the first if even not better. The people are friendly and make you feel at home. It has a nice relaxing atmosphere and the prices are very reasonable. Both times my massage was so good I was in heaven the rest of the day. They really listen to you want and focus on those areas. I recieved my massage from Gayle and she did a fantastic job. My shoulders were so tense I almost thought there was no hope, but she got the knots out and they are still feeling relaxed three days later. The on-line booking tool is also a bonus as you can look over availability and see what works best with your schedule vs someone throwing dates and times at you that may or may not work. I love how you can book online - instant gratification! It's just easier than leaving a message, and getting someone to call you back to confirm. I was able to book my appointment the night before, and I got Gayle. She was great, and the signature facial was wonderful. I'm a huge "treatment addict" but oddly new to the facial scene, although I work hard at home to take care of my skin DIY style (LUSH masks, oh yeah!). This is because I always thought that if I was going to throw down a hundred bucks I was going to get a massage. You know, something that feels good. But now that I'm pushing 40, I'd thought I'd give it a go and told myself I'd get a facial every month for a year and see what happens. Dang, Dana Craft is amazing! I have only gotten three facials so far and my skin has noticeably improved. I don't even need a full year to figure this out. It's magical! And the treatment DOES feel good (okay, aside from the extractions, but it's brief and I'm vain enough to withstand). Dana is a really nice person, and incredibly skilled. I enjoy chatting with her during the appointments, and I feel very relaxed and happy when I leave. And when I get home I look in the mirror and think, "Holey hell, I look good!" Dana has shown me that facials do work and are worth every penny. read more
