Accommodations and area were great but we never got the bathroom code because no one was at the office so we could not use showers or bathroom. Very disappointing. I've camped here several times by myself over the last 4 or 5 years and this year I wanted to take the family there because I enjoyed it. However, it was an epic failure. First, I was looking forward to taking my 3 year old to the ice cream social. Nope - canceled and they didn't bother to tell this to me when I made my reservation. Second, right as we were about to put our baby down to sleep (about 8pm), a group of 30 or more people rolled into the campsite next to us and proceeded to yell, scream, run around (through our site, too) and play loud music. Our baby cried through 2 hours of this until we finally had to pack up our stuff and leave! It was a huge disservice for the campground to put so many people in 1 or 2 sites! And they didn't bother controlling the chaos as it spilled over into the neighboring sites ruining the experience of their other customers. So, I'm sorry Sugar Loafin', but as much as I liked your campground, I will never return. I'm not going to risk the effort it takes to bring my family there only to have our camping experience ruined. read more

Great campground! The gentleman helping us was nice, kind, and helpful. We tent camped and unfortunately weren't able to get one of their typical tent sites as they were really full. They placed us behind the building. This was totally fine with us as we didn't spend much time at all at the tent and were thankful for the bathrooms being so close. The bathrooms were very clean! And they sold firewood for only $5. Everyone followed the rules and the campground was peaceful at night. I didn't take any pictures of the site but here's a picture of my dog acting crazy on the picnic tables lol. My only complaint was that they didn't have many snacks at the store (but we were an easy drive to town) or much fishing gear; so just come prepared with all of that. We'd definitely stay here again if we needed to!! read more

We stayed here for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit! The RV section was separated from tent camping which was nice. We also ended up being the only tent campers while we were there, although we were informed that it does get very busy during the summer. Cory (?)) at the front desk was amazing and very helpful during our stay. She offered great suggestions for things to do in town. They had firewood to purchase, the showers were very hot, and bathrooms were clean (and warm!). There is a Safeway very close by (7 minutes or so) which we very much appreciated. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for a place to camp in Leadville. read more

Arrived and drove through, looking for a spot. No signs or instructions, so we assumed the number posts with no reserved or occupied tags were open. Chose one and went to pay. They said we were in a reserved spot. We said how were we to know? They said we have to ask them what's open. Okay, so what is open? They give us a spot and we pay (not cheap,either...$56 for one electric night). As we backed into our new spot, the gal ran out and said we couldn't have that one. What? You just put us here. Yeah, her boss said those were reserved for smaller units (our 24' was already comfortably in, no issues). We got a refund, and seemed they could care less. No sorry or anything. Went on to a campground up the road that was as good as this one was bad (see Molly Brown). read more

This campground is a convenient location for exploring Leadville or the nearby mountains. I am usually loathe to stay at RV Parks since I tent camp, but they have a very nice tent section that is set apart from the RV part. At $30 for the night, I thought that was a bit steep, but there aren't a lot of options that I'm aware of (besides nearby forest service campgrounds) The bathrooms and shower were very clean. They advertised an ice cream social - forget the price, but for under $3 you could bring your bowl and spoon for all you can eat ice cream. What a horrible way to spend your vacation. The actual camp ground is nice. Bathrooms are nice, showers are clean. The property is well maintained. That being said. The management/owner of the grounds has created a controlled environment that makes it impossible to enjoy your stay, If you have a dog and he hears it barking. 25 dollar fine. If you collect wood from the grounds or surrounding areas 25 dollar fine. If your fire wood is bigger than 2 feet long 25 dollar fine. If you leave your lights on past 10. U got it. Another fine, if you pick flowers another fine. If you fart in the wrong direction. Your gonna get a fine. If you don't pay the fine rite away in cash. It doubles. So basically your in a prison. Not a way I wanted to spend my vacation. I would never go back there. I will continue to post my reviews on every platform I can to get the word out on this place. And there is nothing about the fines until you pay for your site. It's given with your receipts. Also one last thing. The word eviction is a common word for this place with no refunds. Awesome camping experience - staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay. We camped in the tent area, RV was separate, and it was well shaded with trees, clean and had a water spigot next to the fire pit. Bathrooms were a short walk away, clean and had full water/shower as well. It was our first time camping again in a while and Sugar Loafin did not disappoint. We will definitely go back! read more

I would never stay here again and would not recommend. Bathroom was almost always clogged up so that was a big turn off. Tent sites are super close to each other. When you pull in it looks like an old junk yard things need cleaned up. From tent sites to bathroom is kind of far with no lights to guide you at night and going up hill at night is a little difficult. Then the owner is not a people person he was rude and even had a "friend" attack me after I posted a review on his Facebook page. The staff was friendly and tried to make things better they even said sometimes he can go off on things. If you do stay there bring bug spray because the bugs were REALLY bad there, I mean that Is not their fault but just something I wish we would have known:) read more

After spending several nights in a row in National Forest campgrounds we were in need of another shower. Stumbled across this place with our trusty Woodalls Campground Directory and pulled in. It is expensive. We paid $42. If you mention you like camping you get a 10% discount. (That's not much of a secret since it is posted on the sign in the office.) The staff was very freindly. The campground has several areas but it is not that big. The RV area with full hookups, the electric/water area, and the tenting area. The area with the electric/water is the nicest. It is under some beautiful tall trees. Unfortunately, we needed full hookups which is more or less in an open area with no shade. The sites are level. The have a rec room which is average and a playground that could be better. But their ice cream social is amusing. $1.50 for all you can eat. They had 4 different flavors - just remember to bring a bowl and spoon. Otherwise it's another $.25 or something like that. Overall, it is a nice place to stay but a little pricey. read more

I agree with everything the previous poster said. Yup, it's a little steep. But one thing I really liked, was that the tent camping area was far from the RV area, and it was totally quiet. If memory serves, their policy is that if a camper gets reported to management for keeping up other campers (loud noise, music, bratty screaming kids), then the offender has to pay for the offendee's camping fees. As a result, once night falls, it's pin drop quiet. Warning: we've camped here both in June 2009 and 2010 and the mosquitoes were HORRIBLE. Normally, we're totally green campers, but we had to march back into town, buy a can of "Yard Guard" nuke the place, then spend an hour inside the car having a beer, until the mosquitoes were all dead. The base of the tent camping area is next to a creek, so that's why, I suppose. If you tent camp, you might want to get the most secluded spots up on top the hill, so if you have to go number 1 in the middle of the night, you can find a secluded group of trees to do your business. Otherwise, you're in for a long hike to the john. Also, this place is pretty far up in elevation. My traveling partner only brought her "Summer Sleeping bag" rated to only 45 the first year, and she froze. I recommend bringing your long johns and winter sleeping bag. We'd start off in the early morning in big fleece jackets, long underwear, hats, but by noon, we'd be stripped back down to shorts, t's and sandals. Wacky weather around Leadville. read more

Nice and quiet, clean restrooms, gravel roads throughout, larger RV pull-throughs with concrete pads. I'm on dirt right now with a travel trailer and it's fine. It feels like National Forest land with lots of spruce trees, squirrels and chipmunks. Quite a variety of sites, tenting (away from the RV sites), RV with full hookups, pop-up sites, power and water only, etc. Cold at night, 9/25/11 overnight low of 30F. Lake Veronica is very close, see lots of peeps with fishing poles. Charge a base rate and add for number of people in your group. I wish I could give 0 stars. was absolutely horrified at how awful we were treated by the staff at this campground. Brittany, the girl at the office, was unfriendly from the beginning and VERY rude with each encounter during our time. Camping should be a fun experience and they created a very tense environment. We ended up getting refund for our second night due to how awful we were treated. This is not a campground....It's an RV Park. They came over to our camp site multiple times to say they would kick us out if we had a fire after 10pm (even though that's not in the rule book) or if they heard any barking from our dogs. We were not playing music or even talking loud. Don't go here if you want to relax. Brittany needs to go into a new line of work as well because she can barely smile. read more

Have camped here many times for the past 30 years. Recent stay on the July 4th stay was less then we had come to expect. In the mornings you have to compete with camp robbers from the Forest Service dispersed campground and the lake for the bathroom and showers. There is no longer a dog walk so you take your life in your hands when you walk up the dirt road, lots of speeding cars and the UTVs treat it like the Indy 500. Will think twice about continued camping hopefully they can get control of their facilities and prevent the robbers and poachers who come in after hours and leave early. read more

I recently stayed here at the end of August and it was perfect. The summer crowds were dying down, and the whole campground was VERY quiet. I stayed in the upper tent area which was shaded with thick trees. The restroom facilities were immaculate, which was a nice change from the National Forest campgrounds. I would start off by saying that the tent sites are very close together so if you get out by a rowdy group of college kids, expect to hear their every conversation. Like their fire pit was 7 feet from my tent site. WAY TOO CLOSE I would agree with the other reviewer here that the Mosquitos are insane. Like full deet insane. Be ready to lather up and burn all the candles you have. Bathrooms are clean which is awesome but you roll the dice with who camps next to you. You will get to know them very well. read more

The location is great. The area for dogs are great. If you like rustic campgrounds I would give it four stars. However the 2 large downfalls are under burning chemicals and objects. The wood was made out of ceramic. What I mean by that is it the wood would not burn. Secondly the manager was never their to pump the propane into our tank so we had to take cold showers. They had showers houses, that were clean with excellent water pressure. The construction of the shower stalls was in need of serious servicing. i.e. bricks were missing. read more

Don't change your plans because their actual cancellation policy is different than what is listed on their site. We booked in December of 2018. Then my sister in law got sick and passed away in June. I called 3 weeks prior to our arrival time to cancel because my sister in law went into hospice. I was told on the phone we were well within the 48 hour cancellation period and all but $10 of our deposit would be returned. Several weeks later, when following up with the campground office, we were told the deposit would not be refunded and they'd keep all money. The policy on the website is completely different than the PDF that was sent to confirm the reservation. It's a sneaky way of doing business because if your policy is clearly stated on your website, it's normally not necessary to compare what was sent in the PDF to see if it's the same verbiage. Don was able to re-rent our sites because our friends still took their spot and they had neighbors. Had we known Don would pull this shady practice, we would have given away our sites to friends that could have used it in our absence. Instead, Don pocketed twice the $. Don will certainly come up with some sort of rebuttal to this that will attempt to place the blame on me like he does with all his other low reviews. The truth is, it's slimy and it sounds like Don should be a politician because he plays the sleaze game well. Had Don worked with us and showed any minute semblance of humanity, our family would have returned in the fall with our full group and reserved three full sites for a long weekend. Now we'll find somewhere else to spend our money. read more

This place was terrible. There were so many mosquitos. It's Crazy expensive for what it offers. Campsites are ridiculously too close together -- like a sardine can of tents and RVs. Who goes camping so they can hear their neighbor's every cough and wheeze? The noise of the highway which runs next to the campground (from Leadville to the very popular Turquoise Lake) was constant, well into the evening, including the lovely roar of dirt bikes without mufflers running back and forth. And, the owner was quite honestly a real jerk to us and seems to be completely lacking in compassion or integrity. We were promised we could stay six nights, and paid for six nights, then they changed their minds and said someone had rented it before online (their mistake) and so we had to move. No apology. No negotiating. Just MOVE OR WE"RE CALLING COPS. The owner threatened me with police if we didn't move on two hours' notice. We took a refund and left. I would never stay here again, and I've definitely warned off all the RV people in my life from staying here. The best thing about Sugar Loafin (and the only reason ANY tent camper should consider paying these super high rates) was the showers. That's why we stayed there instead of much nicer nearby campgrounds (which do have toilets) or free camping nearby -- the showers are nice. Otherwise, skip this one! read more

We loved this campsite! We had a tent site and they walked us to it to make sure we were oriented and knew where the water and parking spot was. The folks in the store were super friendly and always willing to help. The bathrooms were spotless at all times of the day. I have camped at this campground before, just didn't remember it being so involved with the rates. We got one site with electric and water and one site without. There were 5 adults and 2 kids. We had 4 tents and 3 cars. There was a separate charge for EVERYTHING!!! I was so confused when we were trying the check in that it almost spoiled the experience as we didn't know who was going to go on what site, but the very young teenager checking everyone in repeated at least 8 times who was staying where after we told her we would have to check out the sites before we knew which tents would fit where. The electric and water site was VERY small and was literally the front yard of the bathrooms. The lights in the bathrooms and surrounding the bathrooms were on all night and we couldn't sleep as it was almost like daylight in the tent and there were people walking right by our windows all night long with flashlights shining in our eyes. For the people mentioned in this description, 3 cars and 4 tents, it cost us collectively $90 per night! Ridiculous! I have stayed in places for a fraction of the cost all over Colorado that were palaces compared to this place. One plus is that the bathrooms and showers were very clean. read more

The campground is not well kept. The sites are not mowed and have grass and weeds over a foot tall! The Mosquitos were unbearable due to the tall weeds. When you step out of RV you are on dirt or mud. The site are to close. We had our slide out and the camper next to us had their slide out and the slides were less than a foot apart, no privacy. Just stayed a week there over the July 4th weekend. Pretty crowded and not much space for manuvering a trailer, but there isn't much else available for an RV needing hookups near Leadville. A little noisy and dusty, mostly due to ATVs and motorcycles going in and out. Pretty quiet after 10 pm and showers are clean. The free 7th day is nice. My actual score would have been between 2 and 3. read more

after staying at this campsite at a choir retreat we awoke to an extremely hostile owner coming into our campsite to give us a piece of his mind about complaints made by those surrounding us and by his staff. First of the two was a noise complaint made by those around us. We had left the campsite when quiet hours began and, as such, these complaints were ungrounded and honestly insulting because of the tone of the owner. Not only that, but we were woken up at 5:30 by car horns and alarms and yelling. The second complaint was that cars we had to many cars parked in our site and we had refused to move them when staff personel asked us to move them. Not only did his staff guide us to this site, but as it turned out, he was talking about the site next to us. After telling us that we would be charged a stunning 130 fee for these alleged crimes and promising to apologize if he was wrong, this disgruntled man stormed out of our campsite. We were told that he was wrong about the cars but that the imaginary noise fee's would stand and were charged $160 for a one night stay. Long story short, this campsite was a complete mistake. read more
