Wonderful state park. I'm so glad I came here. I almost decided to skip this place but I was coming from Emerald Bay viewpoint and it was on the way. $10 for entrance fee for the whole day was not bad. They have a parking lot and you can just bring all your stuff and walk over. We saw families with floaties and swimming stuff. There is a mansion that looks out into the water. I think it's a museum but it was closed by the time we got there. There is also a lot of grass and picnic benches to sit at. There is a huge dock that people can fish and swim at. There was even a ladder for people to climb back up or down from the dock to swim. I decided to dip my feet in the water off the shore and it was very rocky. Not much sand so definitely wear water shoes. They hold events and weddings here too. We saw on TikTok that there was a railroad that goes into the water. We walked toward it and found it was a boat launch. We saw the track in the evening so the picture wasn't as pretty compared to the videos we saw during the day time. The water is very blue and pretty. Very calming. The best part was as we heading out we saw a black bear roaming around the premises. It was my first time seeing a bear in person so we had to take pictures and videos. We saw the bear was tagged. We heard from some campers that she (assuming the bear is a girl) was walking around the campsite as well. That was the highlight of my day. read more

Hiked to the beach with my family and loved that it wasn't very crowded. Most people who were at this beach came on a boat. Very gorgeous view with clear water and is fairly quiet. We had a relaxing time walking along the shore. It also had a unique spot with rail tracks going into the water which I recommend checking out. read more

One of the most underrated spots on Lake Tahoe!! A great place to spend the day , natural shade from the trees in the grassy area , swimming and soaking up the sun on the dock and incredible lake and mountain scenery from everywhere. If you bring a kayak or paddle board you can paddle just south towards Meeks Bay and tuck yourself into a number of smallish beaches if you want some privacy. When we have a weak winter and the lake level drops , you will have a very small 6-8 foot deep sandy beach area but we haven't had that for quite a few years. So the only thing you don't really get here is a big sandy beach but you do get a fantastic stretch of beautiful lake tahoe in a park like atmosphere with towering trees !!! Sugar Pine Point State Park - beatin the heat! - Parks Near Me - Meeks Bay, California

Located on the West end of Lake Tahoe. Short walking distance to the lake on the other side of highway 89. Park is known for the presence of black bears. Did not encounter any! Come to think about it, probably was overly cautious having bear spray within reach. Visitors must comply to safety rules and prevention. Supposedly fragrant items (e.g. soap, shampoo, etc.) are highly attractive to bears. Our assigned site (number 76) sits at the beginning of the loop. Surrounded by neighbors on all sides except one. Nearest restroom and dumpster is just two sites away. Potable water is accessible in front of site 78. Bear storage are included at each site along with a picnic table and a fire ring. Camp host will make frequent runs around the loop with firewood available for purchase. There is a presence of carpenter ants but was not a nuisance. Experienced hot mid days and warm nights in the month of early August. Ideal and convenient for those looking to visit various parts of Lake Tahoe and even neighboring city of Reno. read more

July 15-18, 2025 - Lake Tahoe A State Park located along the beautiful shore of Lake Tahoe. Wonderful for kayaking and picnicking on the beach. The only downside is the trails and beaches are "no dogs allowed". When we camp at the campground, if we take our dog on the paved trail to the beach, you can only go so far. It is clearly marked "no dogs on beach or beach trails". Which is a little awkward if you want to put in at the beach and kayak with your dog. We managed to work it out, though, and took our pup on the kayak. This is a beautiful place to spend the day and enjoy the wonders of Lake Tahoe. We even managed to take a swim...the water is not that cold (at least not in July, close to shore). read more

Sugar Pine Point State Park - July 13, 2025 We were here for a 5 night stay. This is a great campground to stay at during a warm summer's day. There are lots of pine trees and sweet aromas of the forest and flowering shrubs. Coming down off of granite peaks so high and proud, the warm taste of summer under cotton candy clouds. The earth, the wind, the sweet fragrant smell, said more than words could ever tell. Butterscotch Breeze, by Bruce O Most of the campsites are fairly spacious. They have picnic tables and fire rings together with bar lockers. Yes, they have lots of bears, so you cannot leave anything out without fear of a bear. Disturbing your campsite. In fact, if you do leave things out the park Service will give you a ticket . They have nice water running bathrooms and a separate shower facility. There are lots of great hiking and cycling trails. Some go across the highway down to the lake. The Shoreline is not dog friendly, but if you wanna go kayaking, you can walk your dog down and put it in the kayak. Wow! One of the most beautiful State Park I have visited. The plan was for the family and me to spend some time here, but we stayed here for much longer than we had planned. Access to the park was easy; we found parking immediately, and the entrance fee was $10. It was so serene; the water was so blue and clear. It was open, which was ideal for swimming and beach lounging. We had kids ages 7-10, and they enjoyed the water and did not want to leave. A kayak and paddle board rental kiosk is next to the historic mansion on the walkway towards the beach. You can also rent life jackets for a couple of dollars. The restrooms located next to the parking lot were clean and accessible. It's such a beautiful place to visit in Lake Tahoe!! read more

What a beautiful and uncrowded park right on Lake Tahoe! I was in the area, leaf peeping and took a detour up along the lake shore and saw how crowded Emerald Bay and other areas were closer to South Tahoe. Within 20 minutes, I instead entered Sugar Pine Point and found a half empty parking lot, paved walking trails down to the lake, fall colors and lots of history. Since it was late afternoon in October and "off season" no rangers were manning the kiosk so it was self-pay. I have a CA parks pass, which is valid here. Really well kept park with an ADA paved trail down to the lake, picnic areas and clean restrooms. There are historical buildings (which were closed for the season) with informational panels about the area. Lots of green lawns to stretch out on, some beach front and a pier that lets you get some up close lake views. Coming in fall, you can also experience the changing colors both in the park and along the way. Really enjoyed the time I spent here and it's a lovely, quieter section of Tahoe for a more peaceful lakeside visit. read more

First time here so I can't compare it to any of the other Lake spots, but I didn't have any issue or complaints to warrant any deduction in my rating. Keep in mind there is a parking fee, and as of this review was $10 per car. I could see the lot easily getting full, but even if it was completely full, the park itself seems big enough to space out a full crowded lot that it wouldn't feel too crowded--unless of course the entire crowd just all stuck together in the same area. They had clean bathrooms, nice paths to walk, grassy hills and picnic tables. A nice pier/dock where people could hang, chill, or use as a jump into the lake. I think the only thing this lacked compared to the other spots is a big sandy beach area. If that's important to you I believe there are other spots that have a true beach like feel. Not to say this place doesnt have a beach area, it was just small compared to the other Tahoe hot spots I've seen. Definitely would go here again, looks like there are lots of spots to see and areas to walk that could keep you busy an entire day. If you are looking to simply be right on the water though, the walk from the parking lot to the water is at least 10-15 minutes. Not something for a quick photo by the water and back, especially since you do have to pay for parking. You go here to really make a day or afternoon out of it. read more

This past winter was my first visit here. We walked by the lake with our dogs. And we took some pictures. It is a beautiful place to enjoy the lake, the forest, outdoors and nature. The snow covered mountains, and the crystal blue lake made for some stunning scenery. I was very pleased with this park. Even though it was fairly popular, the place was big enough that people were spread out. This state park is on the west shore of Lake Tahoe and has lake access for kayakers, swimmers, and paddle boarders. There is even a seasonal rental kiosk for kayaks and paddle boards. It is such a beautifully maintained historic property with wonderful walking paths, historic buildings, informative docent tours, and a visitors center. The Sugar Pine Point Campground is across the street and connects by a walking and biking path. read more

Highlight of my Tahoe trip! In the midst of covid and wildfires there was not much open. We somehow stumbled across this park while on a drive and amazingly it was not very crowded. We ended up coming back the next day and parking was full shortly after arriving. This was such a nice place to swim, and we were luckily it was the last weekend for kayak rentals so we were able to do that. All the other days/places we tried were sold out or closed due to visibility. We also loved just walking around as there was a paved path through a lot of the area. Definitely would recommend checking this out if you're in the area! read more

Came here on a whim because the snowboarding conditions were not optimal. Easy parking and lots of camp sites. Note- certain areas, restroom, showers and dump station are closed for winter. Dogs are allowed on marked pathways with a leash no longer than 6 feet. They are also allowed at camp sites as long as they are leashed and monitored. We just did a loop of all the different camping areas to check things out. Definitely will be back in summer. Be sure to fully read the camping and food storage instructions - bear active area. read more

And now the low point of our recent Tahoe journey. Sugar Pine Point is - without question - an absolutely stunning and beautiful area, with a wonderful beach, plenty of activities and historic buildings. All this was soured, however, by an absolutely ridiculous parking policy and rude employees who made what should have been a nice afternoon with the family into a complicated nightmare. We arrived in late morning. Unlike other parks nearby, there was no line for entry and the gal at the kiosk (I wish I got her name) said our three cars could park. I needed to travel down the road to get ice, and she said -verbatim - that's fine, but if the parking lot is full you can't re-enter. Seeing as there were at least 20 spots open and no line of cars up front, I decided to take my chances. Ten minutes later, I returned and she was standing out from with two other dudes and said the lot was full, DESPITE at least ten spots that were visibly open from the front kiosk! I told her my friends were inside and that I was just there. Doesn't matter, she said. I said what if they were saving a spot for me. This is when a real a-hole of a dude with a tat on his arm decided to flex his Johnny Law muscle and tell me they would be cited as it is illegal to hold spots for people. Okay... So instead I had to park miles down a busy main road carrying everything from life jackets for children to a cooler backpack. When I finally met my friends again almost an hour later, we were so pissed we went back to talk to her. This is when they explained the "rules" they never explained in the first place. Apparently "full" means less than ten spaces available (even though there were more than that available), and they determine this through arbitrary checks that they don't tell you how often they make. She even had the nerve, with the snippiest of attitudes, to say that if we didn't like it we could just run it up the ladder through the state website, which we know will do nothing. It's fine to have rules. But "full" is very different from a list of regulations approaching full. To have explained that in the first place would have determined whether I ever left. Icing on the cake: They saved a spot up front to allow another family to unload their vehicle - something that would have helped me greatly to avoid my mile long trek back into the place. read more

This place is an easy hike for tourists who've spent the day trying out tougher hikes. My recommendation would be to visit this place close to sunset to catch a beautiful view of the sunset from the west coast of lake Tahoe. There's ample space alongside an artificial beach and a boardwalk to catch some breathtaking views of the lake from the west side. Parking costs 10$ and it's totally worth it to spend time and visit the historic mansion as well. read more

This is one of my favorite spots to bike to and take in the views of the lake. It's a very short 10 minute bike ride from Tahoma and the nearby campground. If you're biking I recommend stopping at the first bike rack you come across before you go any further down the path. Stopping at the first one will make your journey up the hill easier and you can walk along the lake to the mansion if you also want to see it as well. If you don't mind going up hills then definitely continue following the path until you get to the mansion and you can park your bike at the rack nearby. If you feel like jumping into the water or want to sit down, there's a long dock to do just that. SUP and kayaks are available to rent to take out on the lake and if you have a tennis racket, I recommend bringing it since there is a court you can play on. You can also take a leisurely stroll down the paved path getting views of the lake while reading the history behind Sugar Pine Point. This is the spot if you want to see what it's like to own a mansion with amazing lake and forest views. read more

When we came to check out the park it was covered in snow. I mean multiple feet of snow. We got here early so there was plenty of parking but some how I think that there aren't that many visitors when there is a ton of snow. I would recommend coming in early. The park is dog friendly as long as they are on a leash. So we brought our goofy dog along to explore. We walked over the mansion and I swear I thought this was the mansion from The Godfather II. I did a quick search and found out it is not. Its still really cool and I could not imagine anyone ever living in a home like this. Our adventure took us all over. We walked down to the beach and played in the water for a bit. We walked all the way out to the end of the pier and threw snow balls into the lake. It was quite the adventure. It was pretty awesome even though it was covered in snow. I'm sure that the place gets crazy in the summer time. The views are stunning as always around Lake Tahoe. Its the East Bay's jewel to the north. read more

Sugar Pine Point State Park - Sugar, sugar everywhere! - Parks Near Me - Meeks Bay, California

To those of you that are looking to escape the hustle and bustle from the city while in search of a serene, utopian, and tranquil atmosphere, "Sugar Pine Point State Park" just might be what you are looking for. It truly is a hidden gem and exemplifies everything South Lake Tahoe stands for and much, much more. Located directly 10 miles south of Tahoe City, this place is located directly off of Highway 89 in the heart of Meeks Bay on the west shore of South Lake Tahoe. It is also right in between Highway 50/Highway 80. Every time I've ventured out here, the parking area has been unbelievably empty, almost desolate. I've visited the park during all four seasons and have been impressed just how little traffic there is out here. Some of the activities that I have participated in has been day hiking, sightseeing, swimming, and fishing. You will also see a giant mansion (aka the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion) which actually offers a nature preserve center that is opened during the day. This includes a bird, mammal, and fish display; all of these species call this area their home. You also get several exhibits that showcase biology, ecology, wildflowers, and several trees that are prominent in the area. Since this state park is more isolated and open, it also serves as a wonderful camping area. Reservations are required as they offer 10 large group campsites and 120 family campsites. I do recommend checking the weather forecast ahead of time since it can get very chilly at night even during the summer months. And every once in awhile, South Lake Tahoe occasionally receives monsoonal storms. Now the main reason why I am sold on Sugar Pine Point State Park is the pier! It looks like something out of a postcard and it is a photographers' dream. You will be greeted with crystal clear blue waters reflecting from the pier. It definitely is one of the nicest and cleanest bodies of water anywhere in the world. Additionally, this area has several picnic tables while there is a ton of open land for the kids and dogs to run and play. And finally, there is a giant gazebo which is another great area to take memorable pictures. Many people hold entire wedding receptions as well due to the great open air scenery and landscaping. Do keep in mind that this is the great outdoors and with that, there could be black bears lurking around here before hibernation season. You also have an abundance of insects, bees, squirrels, and birds. Hence the name "pine", you will also see a great deal of pine cones all over the park itself. Overall, this is a state park that I highly recommend visiting if you haven't been here already. Make sure to check all traffic/weather conditions as the winter months can really be treacherous with the snowfall and/or road closures. All in all, "Sugar Pine Point State Park" is top-notch in my book; my rating, a perfect five-stars! read more

Nature will always reign supreme on planet Earth. The animals and insects always have a way of reminding humans that we are not in charge. Remember this fellow campers. You are in their house - not the other way around! As many of the other reviewers mentioned (complained), this season there were plenty of Yellowjackets. From sunrise to sunset, the buzzzzz could be heard in many parts of the park. Make no mistake, the bees are in the entire region! At the lake front and in Tahoe City. So for now, dining must be enjoyed indoors. Or at least until after sunset. Aside from the occasional 'gimme your food' swarms, this place is super clean and extremely quiet, considering its proximity to the highway. An overnight camping fee of $35 will get you a spacious site under shaded trees fully equipped with fire pit, bear box and a small grill. So you know what I mean by spacious, our site had 2 3 person tents, 2 dogs, 4 adults and 1 child. We still had plenty of room for two more tents and or 4 adults. Behind our site was the open wilderness. Speaking of bears, there were 4 sightings this season. I was a bit disappointed we didn't see any during our stay. Grey squirrels, birds and of course the bees made their presence known without apology. The camper van next to us made an early departure because a little furry fella kept dropping fresh acorns from the treetop onto their camper van. I'm sure that saying 'too bad he's so high up, we could shoot something at him' didn't aid the squirrel decision to end his assault. Squirrel 1 - Human 0. And gone! I had a good laugh. When camping do you prefer nature's bathroom as opposed to the site restroom? On most occasions, the site restroom is filthy or too far from the campsite. Not only were the restrooms at Sugar Pine some of the cleanest campground facilities I've ever encountered but they were also well lit and not too far from our site. This made that late night 3am restroom run less unbearable. Because, yeah, who wants to trek .25 miles in bear country to go to the restroom. Keep your paid fee ticket and drive to the other side of the highway. There is another entrance to the State park that is alongside the lake. Take your crocks or water shoes because the water has plenty of rocks. Not pebbles. Rocks! Get. In. The. Water!!!! Oh man, it's so fresh and so clean! By far much warmer than the water at any San Francisco beach. It's the end of the season so the summer crowns have disappeared. This means plenty of room for swimming, lounging and watching. Animals on this side consist of geese and ducks. Surely there are fish further out into the deeper parts of the lake. But yeah, you won't see me swimming out there. Also on this side of the park is the historical Ehman mansion dating back to 1903! For $10 you can have a 30 minute guided tour of the inside of the house and buildings on the grounds. The property is massive, originally spread out over 2000 acres! I didn't do the tour because dogs are not allowed inside. Even if you do have dogs the grounds themselves are a beautiful site to behold with plenty of historical markers for a self-guided tour. read more

As someone who just up + moved from uber-metropolitan Downtown LA to Norcal just recently, I think I surprise myself a little in proudly stating that my friends + I had the pleasure of camping here at Sugar Pine Point for a couple nights over a weekend in August. It had been years since I had the treat of spending a night under the stars! THE CAMPGROUNDS One of the people in our group made the reservation via http://www.reserveamerica.com/ for only $35/night plus a small fee. I'd recommend booking at least 2 months in advance to have your pick of campsites as some are definitely more secluded + spacious than others! Parking for 1 car is included with camping reservations + then it's $10 for any additional cars. Upon checking in at the ranger station, you'll get a campgrounds map http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/510/files/EdZbergSugarPinePtCampgroundMap2006.pdf plus have to sign a form stating that you have read + understand the regulations regarding bears. The fine is a whopping $1000 for any food/toiletries/sunscreen left unattended outside your designated bear locker at anytime of day or night. Yikes! We personally didn't have the opportunity to go as there was a wedding happening on the lawn outside with the mansion being used for the reception. All in all, a pretty awesome trip. I got married in Sugar Pine Point State park, with Ehrman Mansion in the background. It was a beautiful September evening and our pictures are AMAZING! Danielle with the special events crew is a pleasure to work with! I am not giving this 5 stars as a venue for a couple reason. 1) When you pay the special event fee to get married here all you get is the property (no tables, chairs, linen, electricity, no putting stakes in the ground and a laundry list of other rules) 2) You must get event insurance 3) You can't plug anything into the mansion or gazebo because the electrical is super old so your caterer and DJ will need to bring their own generator. 4) There is are sound rules so your DJ has to keep music at a certain level. It's not that big of a deal. Just obviously not "club" level loud. 5) Lights out at 10pm sharp - I was concerned that a 5pm to 10pm wedding was going to feel super short but 10pm was a perfect time for the wedding to end and all my guest were still around for the send off In summation, Ehrman Mansion is a breathtaking background for your big day, and I highly recommend it, but if you are thinking of getting married in a State Park to save some money then look some place else. Since you have to bring EVERYTHING to the venue, it get's pricey. I also highly recommend working with vendor who have done wedding at this location. Nice campground among and surrounded by dense forests of pine, fir, aspen and juniper. Another big plus is that the park has almost 2 miles of lake front. Located on Highway 89 between Meeks Bay and Chambers Lodge. Plenty of local activities. Also, when you stay at a place such as Kaspian where there are no showers, you can come here, pay the day fee, and use the showers here - bring plenty of quarters for those. Been coming to this beach once a year since I was in the womb. A BEAUTIFUL park on the west shore. There is plenty of beach for a group or family. There is also a pier you can walk down (and jump from, if you are brave enough, the water is COLD!) and lots of sand for the kiddies. This is also the location of the Ehrman Mansion, which is available to tour, and worth it if you can peel yourself away from the sights of the lake. Only downside is there are no dogs allowed on the beach, a rule that is strictly enforced by the rangers. So if you are a dog lover, this might not be the place for you. Sugar Pine Point State Park - Parks Near Me - Meeks Bay, California

Great place for cross-country skiing in the winter. For $8 you can park and ski for miles along their trails. The east side allows you to ski along the lake for several miles, while the west side had a bit more snow and beautiful trees. If you don't want the amenities of a Nordic park, this is a great deal and really, truly gorgeous. We were all beginning or beginning-intermediate skiers and had plenty to do, though there were several intermediate trials we didn't attempt. read more
