We stopped at Inspiration Point during our Lake Tahoe loop, and it turned out to be one of the most soul-stirring pauses of the day. Set high above Emerald Bay, the views here are nothing short of cinematic deep sapphire waters framed by pine-draped slopes and, if you're lucky, the glint of kayakers far below. The parking lot is modest, but we found a spot without hassle, and the short walk to the lookout was gentle enough for our daughters to scamper ahead excitedly. What struck us most was the peaceful hush at the top almost everyone falls into quiet awe, which makes the moment feel sacred. We lingered for photos and a snack break, soaking in the grandeur and letting the fresh alpine air recharge us. The historical signage added a nice layer of storytelling (a nod to Fannette Island and its lone stone structure), which our girls loved asking about. If you're curating a Tahoe loop with scenic indulgence and minimal effort, Inspiration Point is an essential stop. While Tahoe definitely has no shortage of incredibly scenery and gorgeous landscapes, Inspiration Point Vista is a must stop for some breathtaking candid shots. Overlooking the beautiful Emerald Bay, Inspiration Point is located across the highway from Bayview Trailhead. From here, you can also get a great shot of Fannette Island, and if you look closely, Vikingsholm Castle as well. Parking is available in the connected lot, although it's fairly small and does fill up fast. If you're unsuccessful in snagging a spot to park here, or just looking to avoid paying the parking fee ($5), you can park for free across the way at the parking spots in front of Bayview Trailhead (which are free!). Just be careful crossing the freeway on foot, as cars tend to travel pretty fast at times. Bathroom facilities are also available here if you need. read more

Heavily trafficked area but worth a visit. This spot is wheelchair accessible and gives you some of the most scenic views of Lake Tahoe. It is an absolute must and a great way to kickstart your Tahoe hiking adventure. The drive up here can be a bit strenuous as the roads can be windy, so proceed with caution. Parking is extremely limited so we recommend arriving as early as possible otherwise you'd have to park really far away and walk over. We were lucky enough to snag a spot since we visited off season (end of August) and arrived here at 10am. Lake Tahoe in view. Inspiration Point is an excellent place to stop for some gorgeous scenic views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountain range. This vista point is located off the 89 highway (Emerald Bay Road) on the drive to Emerald Bay State Park from South Lake Tahoe. As you drive up the mountain along Emerald Bay Road, you'll come to a turn off point labeled "Inspiration Point Vista". There are two parking lots; one is located across the street for the hiking trails. This is also the starting point for the Bayview hiking trail. There's a small observation deck with a few info placards posted. There are also a few benches to sit and take in the views. Restrooms are also available if you have to use them. Be careful crossing the road if you park across the street because cars seem to speed by without looking for crossing pedestrians. There are better views of the Lake from the park, but these views are still really pretty. You'll have a great view of the expansive lake as well as the gorgeous pines, Fannette Island, and the stunning mountainous backdrop. This vista is also handicap accessible and equipped with several paved sections for easy access. Parking can be hard if you don't come here early, but most people one stay here for a short time period, so spots become available throughout the day. If you're heading to Emerald Bay State Park, stop here on the way to enjoy some incredible views of the lake. read more

Have passed this place at least a hundred times throughout the years. Parked at 8am at the Bayview Campgrounds to go hike the Cascade Falls trail. Afterwards, walked half mile down to Inspiration Point on the other side of Highway 89. Endless bumper to bumper stream of vehicles going north to Vikingsholm Castle. Hardest part of the half mile walk is crossing the busy highway, as no crosswalks. Taking your life into your own hands. Inspiration point has a paved parking area, with about 25 parking spaces. A few vehicles are parked in the red zone bus stop next to the rest rooms, waiting for an opening, as all parking spots are taken, with only 1 car leaving its parking spot during our 20 minutes here. Dozens of vehicles parked 200 yards away on the far edge of the other side of the highway. Beyond the rest rooms are several staired vista viewpoints behind safety railings. Crowded with people taking family pictures with Fannette Island, beautiful deep blue Emerald Bay, and towering mountains in the background. Only a few spots where you can see the sites between the innumerable sky reaching redwood trees. New sign stating $5 parking for less than 30 minutes, and $10 parking for more than 30 minutes. Fill out a serial numbered form envelope, with your name, vehicle make, model, model year, vehicle license plate number and date of visit. Tear off the matching serial numbered receipt with completed vehicle license plate number and date to put on your dashboard, and deposit the cash in the completed form envelope in the metal box slot, attached to a metal post. There are at least three park rangers watching, next to the metal box slot. Checking the parked cars, not many law abiding visitors, as found few if any vehicles displaying the paid parking receipt. The concept is still new, but expect parking citations in the future for those who don't pay. Finally, the real reason we visited Inspiration Point. Would you walk one mile round trip to use a flush toilet bathrooms at Inspiration Point, rather than be overcome with ghastly odors at the pit toilets at the Cascade falls trail head across the road? An inspiration, no pun intended, okay it was intended. Inspiration Point is a popular place on Lake Tahoe where there's a good view of Emerald Bay and more. Possible at times to drive up and get out for a quick snap of a photo. Even better to get out for a hike along the trails and really enjoy it. The parking sucks but worth it to find time. It gets busy. Of course it's a very popular spot. There's some times if you go early enough there's not many people parked here yet. Maybe you might be able to get out of the car for a few seconds and take a picture. The more likely scenario is that the parking lot will be full and cars will be on your ass, so you won't have time. In that case, park far away if you have to and walk over. The waters in Emerald Bay are various shades of blue, some of the most picturesque. Around the area there's lots of interesting things you should take time to look at. There's a terrific view of Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe. A few signs have interesting facts about this area. Take time and read about it. Best thing about parking is that it's free. It has a few fairly clean restrooms for once. These can be used while hiking back to your parking spot. read more

The water is gorgeous and changes color depending on the light and time of the day. What a great little spot to stop and take in nature. We did a 3 day mid week stay in Palisades. We usually make a round trip. Go I-80 to Truckee and Palisades and then come back home on the I-50 side through South Lake Tahoe and then home. Inspiration Point is a great place to stop mid trip and enjoy the vistas the this part of Lake Tahoe has to offer. Once you head down from the Point.....It is a fun hairpin drive. read more

It's the drive to it that was so thrilling but PLEASE drive carefully as you are going up with no guard rails or nothing on the both side so if a loner driver like myself, do not get into the temptation of wanting to take the photo while driving. Have a $5 cash ready for a parking (App is way too time consuming and not efficient), unless you can find a spot across the street for it. Once you get up to the point, what you see is exactly what you've seen on others photos, so there really wasn't special feels to it, in my opinion. Since it is on the south side of the lake, the transparency isn't what you will see but you realize how humongous this lake is. I recommend plan a few things up this way for this visit as it's a quick stop 20min-ish. read more

Seeing Lake Tahoe by car. For those not hiking, Inspiration Point offers a chance for visitors to get a scenic view of Emerald Bay below and Lake Tahoe in the distance. The parking lot here holds about 20 cars, and more parking is available along Emerald Bay Rd (State Route 89). The lookout platform faces out towards the bay and lake, though the view is not perfect as it is partially obstructed by many redwood trees. But the views are still quite beautiful. It's Tahoe, after all. Inspiration Point is wheelchair accessible. There are restrooms and trash receptacles on site, though water fountains seem to be absent. My personal recommendation, if you are able, is to ditch the car and get out on the trail! There are so many trails around here to explore, and the Bayview Campground just across the road from Inspiration Point connects to a couple of them. The trails here offer vistas from a higher vantage point that are even more majestic! read more

I'm only writing about Inspiration Point to help guide visitors as to why this section of Lake Tahoe should be skipped. When I visited over the summer time, I had researched that the views here were quite wonderful and this area was a highly worthwhile visit. Simply stating....Inspiration Point was a waste of time. Reason is.....the ever growing tall trees, shrubs, woods and forestry that was embedded surrounding Lake Tahoe virtually obstructed the entire view. As I walked along the overlook, there wasn't one unimpeded spot to where I could freely gaze out onto Lake Tahoe and appreciate the surroundings. This was very frustrating. All I did was try and peer beyond the trees and observe out onto the lake, yet it was a failure. I must have spent 10 minutes walking up and down the edge of Inspiration Point looking for that picture perfect moment, yet it never occurred, disappointingly. In all, I'm advising that you can pass on this supposedly scenic spot. I wonder though....if it were possible to groom and cut the trees and forestry.....then I'd be confident this setting would be more practical for appreciating Lake Tahoe. Until then....I guess nature rules out. It's okay though.....ultimately, I kept driving along the main road of Lake Tahoe and came upon much better photo opportunities. Just down the way, a couple of miles....there were plenty of moments to stop and pull over including....Emerald Bay State Park - a beautiful panoramic section to admire how pretty Lake Tahoe can be. Just giving a heads up to those visitors out there.....this area can be avoided and wasn't nearly as exciting as you'd expect to find from a place called Inspiration Point. read more

Popular Scenic Overlook For the many times Lake Tahoe welcomes visitors throughout the year this is one of the places that is a must stop if this is your first visit. It is the lake's most spectacular viewpoints. This is one of the places you bring your relatives from out of town, a wonderful spot to absorb nature's beauty, a perfect overlook of Emerald Bay. On the flip side it is also for these reasons that the place gets overcrowded with locals and tourists alike, the view is too crowded and the parking lot congested. You may have to circle the parking area more than once or park across the street to find parking. If you are lucky enough to find parking walk up to the observation area and soak it all in because, heck, you spent all that time circling the parking lot and who knows when you'll be back again. Right?? Take some time to read the interpretive signs and learn something about what you are viewing, enjoy the beautiful scenery and panoramic views. Take lots of photos, bring your selfie stick. LoL! Stay as long as you want but don't camp out there... give others a chance. There are restrooms in the premises. Some parts of the vista point may not be wheelchair accessible. There are steps in the landscape. We still come here once in a while when visiting Lake Tahoe. The views of the bay with its towering pine trees are beautiful and never gets old. A truly breathtaking view awaits at Inspiration Point. Located in the Emerald Bay ares. This is a safe pace to stop and get photos or to just take in the beauty of the pristine waters against some. amazing Sierra Nevada mountain cliffs. If you are driving down the CA side from points north, you will find the pull in after some you drive past cliffs and little to no guardrails. Many people pull off the road to park along this section, but it's not really safe to do this and try to cross the road, especially with kids. A minute more and you can park in a parking lot and walk along paved and railed walkways. There is a rest area here as well if you just gotta go. Many have said that the view here is nothing compared to the view of some of the hikes nearby. I'm sure that's true, but if you've no time for a hike, aren't as agile, or have sleepy little ones, come here and get your daily dose of beauty. read more

For those of you who enjoy a good view, Inspiration Point is one of those places that may be worth visiting in the Lake Tahoe region. Located about 20 minutes northwest of South Lake Tahoe, Inspiration Point offers a gorgeous panoramic view of Emerald Bay. On a great spring or summer afternoon when the skies are clear, you might even be able to see directly into the pristine and translucent water. It's a magical experience, something you may not find anywhere else. My girlfriend and I paid a quick visit to Inspiration Point a couple weeks ago during our Tahoe trip. The great thing about this spot was that it's right along the highway, so you could just pop by on the way to and from North Lake Tahoe or even Emerald Bay State Park. Plus, there's also a decent amount of parking in the lot and next to the highway, so traffic shouldn't be too bad even during peak hours. We hopped out of our car, enjoyed the serene views for a few minutes, and then went on our way. It was as easy as that. For those of you who want to stay longer, there's usually a truck that sells food and essentials (e.g. sunscreen) too! Despite the amazing landscape, I wouldn't really drive all the way to Lake Tahoe just for Inspiration Point however. Especially for the avid and fledgling photographers, there are actually better vantage points nearby. That's because Inspiration Point is covered in a sea of skyscraper-like trees. If you want a more unfiltered view, I recommend going along Vikingsholm trail. Nevertheless, this spot is still a hard place to pass up. Even five minutes is enough to capture anyone's gaze. One of Lake Tahoe's top 5 suggested things to do is Emerald Bay / Inspiration point, as noted on the travel website TripAdvisor. You should come here. For a few times, I listened and followed a travel resource website to plan my travel itinerary. Thankfully I did. While much of Lake Tahoe's activities are basically outdoorsy in nature, there are a handful of sites around town that makes you want to come here. Lake Tahoe in itself is basically a small town that's built around the lake. If you combine that with the mega casinos in the middle of town, it can be a thriving place. With that said, TripAdvisor says that Emerald Bay's inspiration point is definitely one of the nicest most scenic ever in the area. I arrived here around 11:30 AM on a brisk Tuesday. The drive from South Lake Tahoe wasn't too bad, and I got to visit to other sites on the way back to town: Taylor Creek Visitor Center & Tallac Historic sites. It was around maybe a good 45 minutes to an hour drive, if you were driving at the bare minimum speed limit. It was a nice place to visit and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves stunning views and breathtaking vistas. Too bad the trees were in the way. The overall experience here at Emerald Bay's inspiration point was pretty cool and I am glad that I came here to visit. Only thing is though that there are plenty of people that come here on a daily basis, so best bet is to try to come here early. There are limited parking spots here, but they are plentiful. I ended up getting a nice spot, just because I just happened to be there at the right time and I just pulled into the prime parking spot. Not sure if this spot is administered by any federal agency or state agency, but I am thankful that it is like a rest stop and a beautiful one at that. This luscious spot is located in a remote area of highway, overlooking the bay. Actually, you would be driving up multiple hills and blind spots, some of which does not have any rails or security walls to prevent you from accidentally driving off the cliff. It was kind of scary, even if you are driving at speed limit. The best part of this stop is that is free. There is no admission charge for stopping here and admiring the view, it is awesome and definitely a stop you would want to put on your itinerary. There are restroom facilities on this stop, but however, it's usually kind of nasty and I am not sure if it's usually cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. There are a bunch of informational signage posts that informs of the visitor of the history and the intrinsic value of Emerald bay and of Lake Tahoe itself. I think I spent about a good 30 minutes here standing and admiring the views here, while taking pictures. I heard folks talk about trying to get down from the street view and down towards the water below. Not sure if that is possible, but I didn't stick around long enough to find out. Maybe next time though, I can find out. With that said, if you are in the area and really nothing to do, come check this place out. It just may inspire you too. Yet another fine place off of highway 89 that you can pull into and take nice photos. Measuring 600 feet at its highest point, no wonder its call "Inspiration Point". After seeing the views one just might get inspired to become a photographer. Whether you strive to be an amateur or professional, the views here are amazing. I dont think you can have any bad shots. I would consider this a perfect spot out of all the ones you stop at. Its because you dont have to pay for parking, there are bathrooms, and plenty of places to sit down to relax. I like all the little signs they have that give you info on things like how they blasted the ground with dynamite to pave the way for the road that takes you here. You can learn a lot from those things. Overall, make sure this spot is on your must do list whenever you do the drive on highway 89. I would say this place would be one of the Top places to see in Lake Tahoe. It was my first sightseeing destination because of the top view of the Emerald Bay, and of course Lake Tahoe is gorgeous as in brochures and online. It's a bit of a drive up, but it's short from Lake Tahoe BLVD and heavenly resort. Maybe 30-40 minutes. Though to see this area, it has limited parking on the side. Please be careful of your surroundings of other tourists too who may be too excited to see this view. Park where you should and don't block the road way. If there's ice near the ledge please don't be careless to do a selfie, otherwise you'll fall far down, maybe dead. Don't text and drive on the road and slow down around the curves. The drive from SLT was literally a breeze, some nervous spots for this city chick driving in a rental car up through the fresh thin air but an easy drive from SLT from 50 and 89. Small parking area for the view and a food truck serving water and drinks and snacks and ice cream. read more

But it gets even better when you drive a little further to where all the boulders are.
