Husband ordered me a specially designed cake 8 days prior to my birthday, and they quoted him $100. It was a 6" cake. The cake looked alright, however, they did not fully follow the instructions provided when we ordered. Design details were missed, and it truly looks like they rushed on the cake. For $100, we expected more out of it. The cake itself did not taste great - it was very dense, and the filling they used was not what we ordered. He asked for a vanilla cake with a whipped cream and fresh strawberry filling. They had used a white buttercream instead, and also put an inedible fondant covering the entire cake. This turned what was supposed to be a light and airy strawberry shortcake into more of an overly sweet and dense cake, I do want to note that they did not ask any follow up questions about what to use for the cakes icing or anything of the sort (which I find strange especially at this price point for a small cake) when my husband sent in the request. They also told him they put candles in the box, but there were none. We tried to reach out to the business to resolve this offline, and they did not respond. We love supporting local businesses, but unfortunately this one did not hit the mark. read more

Not my cup of sugar... I was expecting more of a variety of desserts but all that was accounted for was cookies, one type of brownie, cupcakes & 4th of July themed macaroons. This place is more known for cakes so not a huge deal. I got a cookies n cream cupcake and homestyle cookie (chocolate chip cookie w/dulce de leche filling). Cupcake was a little dry, but I will say they are very generous with frosting portion on the cupcakes (almost same amount if not more than the bread). Frosting had a good flavor but because cupcakes sit in a cooled display case it was very very thick (solid). Had to wait a bit for it to thaw out. Homestyle cookie wasn't crazy for either. I asked the employee helping me if had a a lot of filling/if the dulce de leche made the cookie "too sweet" but she assured me it didn't. It wasn't for me (unfortunately threw both away after a bite). It was a lot of filling and almost just overpowering, to each their own. Customer service was fine. Been here a couple of time including ordering a custom cake. Ordering the cake was easy and they were able to squeeze me in a week in advance. It was a non voyage cake for my friend moving to France so I wanted it classy and cute with a plane going from Austin to France but I also thought it'd be funny to add "you're dead to us". I explained it and they were able to add it without taking away from the elegance of it. The cake looked pretty but even better, everyone raves about it so much because 1. Cute design but more importantly 2. The cake was gluten and dairy free and you would have never known! It was delicious! The very next day I went to a kids party that had a cake ordered from here too and it was not GF/DF and tasted just the same! This review is way overdue! I was having a hard time finding a bakery for my custom cakes. I used a different bakery for quite some time that went downhill after new management took over. At the time, all custom bakeries seemed to be overwhelmed and booked for months in advance. I couldn't get a cake ordered anywhere! Then someone recommended I give Sugar Shaker a call. Let me tell you, I am so glad I reached out. They have done 4 cakes for me in the past 10 months and ALL of them have turned out superb! The artwork and flavors are excellent. Not to mention, they are some of the friendliest ladies you will meet. And, if for some reason, something is slightly off with your cake, they will remedy it on the spot. They will also work with you on your budget to give you the kind of cake you want without breaking the bank! It was good, but I've had better and worse too. Our party was on a Sunday and there is no ability to pickup on a Sunday. So we had to pick up on a Saturday. I was wanting to pick up early, but you are bound by their times. I was wanting 8 am, but had to do 9:30. We went back and forth over email discussing what I wanted, and the bakery confirmed that they could do it and we agreed to a price. I asked them 1) for payment info and 2) whether they could deliver to downtown Austin. I won't have a car the day of, so I needed them to deliver. The baker sent me an invoice which looked like it was automatically generated but didn't answer the delivery question. The baker never responded to my question, but I figured maybe they don't answer over weekends. I planned to follow up Monday if they didn't respond. I just got a cancellation notice (2 or 3 days after placing an order). I reached out immediately asking why the order was cancelled, and the baker just said they book up fast and I hadn't paid. I understand they're running a business and don't want to hold spaces for people who aren't going to pay. However, the customer service in my case was poor. We had gone back and forth on email several times (I always respond within 5 minutes) on the design. We had agreed to a cost and a date. Very bizarre for them to ghost me at that point. Reading the other reviews, it seems like professional communication and customer service are not their strong point. I'm now feeling like I dodged a bullet. read more

At our tasting we got to try a bunch of different flavors and settled on a wedding cake base with almond frosting and a lemon filling. They designed it to our specifications with a semi-naked finish with berries and greenery. It matched our wedding theme perfectly! The cupcake was good. Moist cake and icing was not overwhelming but definitely chocolatety. BF was not happy with his round churro. He said it was dry and not cinnamon tasting. I had a wonderful experience here. Online ordering was made straight forward and easy. I ordered a small heart shaped cake to gift my husband on his birthday. The cake was ready promptly and looked identical to the photo online. I had prepaid the cake, but when I went to pick up in person I wanted to purchase some birthday candles as well. The card reader was down and I did not have cash, but the woman behind the counter allowed me to have two birthday candles for free. She absolutely did not have to do this, but she displayed her professionalism and kindness in doing so. The cake looked and tasted amazing, and the customer service was stellar. Bought assorted cupcakes from here for a birthday. (Sometimes you get tired of the conventional cake that you don't want to lug around when before and after dinner). The people working there were amazing, sweet, helpful, and super importantly--inclusive. Pink champagne, and Oreo cupcakes were my absolute favorites. The cake itself was moist and flavorful, and I was impressed especially with the pink champagne as the flavoring was delicate and not fake tasting or overpowering (something I've noticed in other pink champagne cakes I've tried). Only drawback for me, and the five of us who ate these cupcakes, was the sweetness of the frosting. For us, the frosting tended to overpower the cake flavor, and eventually all of us just removed the frosting and devoured the cake, which was still okay, we're not really huge frosting fans anyway. We moved to Austin from the Bay Area in March of this year and our son's 6th birthday was coming up real fast. He's a big train nut like his old man and has been asking for a train cake since he was able to talk. However, it was difficult to find a good bakery that could make such an order in a short time frame and without asking for a small investment. When I discovered the Sugar Shaker Bakery in Cedar Park, it was like my prayers had been answered! The staff were extremely friendly and answered my emails very quickly. Communications were detailed and very direct. My order was squared away and a time was arranged to pick up the train cake. On the day of the pick up, I entered the store and it was extremely clean, well decorated, and I loved the black/white photos on the wall. I got to inspect the cake and it was done exactly as I wanted. The train picture I supplied was recreated exactly as the original and the icing/frosting was perfect! My son loved it so much he literally jumped out of his seat when I opened the box to the cake. The cake itself was so delicious! The cake was very fluffy and had good flavor and the frosting/icing rounded it off with just the right amount of sweetness and richness. Everyone loved it so much they all had 2nd and 3rd slices! Most of all, the Chow Family will be returning to the Sugar Shaker for more business in the coming months!
