The sushi is way faster and way better than other places in town. The only problem is the person that makes it seems to be on vacation a lot and they don't delegate that responsibility to anyone else. Sometimes the guy that makes it is in, sometimes not. Our waitress was super sweet and it was extremely quick service! They have a lot of options here, and I want to come back and try a few rolls. Cons: Rolls are pretty expensive here! Most of the special rolls are around $13-$16. But they sound delish, so I would give it a shot. I was hoping they would have some additional lunch specials. Got the udon noodles with extra veggies and an avocado roll. The roll was just pathetic. Small with a mushy avocado, it just looked sad. It didn't taste much better than it looked. Visited Sumo last night and was pleasantly surprised. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the sushi was really delicious. We were welcomed kindly when we entered and were told to sit where we wanted. We were informed that sushi would take 30 minutes to get due to only having one sushi chef, but we ordered anyway. It was delivered in a very timely manner, no problems! We also shared a Bento Box with tempura shrimp and vegetables. The rice was cooked with no salt in the water making it bland and honestly having an off taste. The ginger dressing for my salad was not pleasant. It had a tannic quality that I can't better put my finger on, but I wouldn't get again. The tempura was absolutely tasteless when eaten alone, it was begging for a sprinkling of salt. You'll notice I still give this place 4 stars. This is because the service was so kind and the sushi was that good. I normally don't like a California roll, but this one is one I'd order on its own without coming in the Bento box. Also, the simple onion soup was delicious. We will definitely be back. read more

I don't spend a lot of time in Shelby. In fact, this was the first time I went there and I was a little nervous about food options in a town this small. I ventured into Sumo around 330pm on a Saturday. Late lunch, and let me start by saying I had reached the hangry point and likely would have eaten dirt I was so hungry! The place is small so I was thankful we went at an off peak time so I didn't have to wait! The waitress was friendly and greeted us quickly. Drinks were on the table fast and we placed our order. They have a very big selection of Sushi Rolls to chose from. They have several pages in their menu, but also have a chalkboard wall where they lost the various rolls featured each week. I thought the rolls were very creative and was very happy with the selection to choose from. I ordered a "Hayway Roll" and Shrimp Hibachi. The hibachi came out first which I didn't understand. I was so hungry that I ate it before I remembered to take a picture. The sushi came out 2nd, which I happily polished off as my Clear Soup (which should arrive before hibachi) hit the table! They don't have as many other options but their sushi menu is super diverse and their staff really knows the menu well. It had been quite a while since I'd been to Sumo. They were a good meal! I always like a Bento box because it offers lots of little things on my plate. The Sumo boxes are arguably a little healthier than those at Sushi Dojo across town because they come with soup and salad instead of an egg roll, shrimp tempura and crab rangoons. Man I love this place! Anytime we're in Shelby and want to grab some good sushi this place is it. No, you're obviously not going to find the best sushi ever in Shelby (I had sushi once in a 5 star restaurant in California, that will always stay in my mind) but the fish is fresh and they so many combinations you're sure to find something. Even if you don't love sushi they have a lot of other menu items to choose from. I always enjoy getting the chicken udon noodle soup. The bowl is huge and I always leave stuffed! The service here is really nice and the wait time for food is fast. When we bring our kids they always give them chopsticks with a rubber band and some paper on the end so it's easier for them to hold and THEY LOVE IT! My kids always get jealous when they see us with chopsticks but can't hold them like normal. You can imagine how excited they got when the restaurant brought them out special ones just for them. Kid-friendly places like this always makes me happy. I suggest this place much more over Sushi Dojo in Shelby. Yes, their menu items are very similar but the service there is terrible, you'll wait forever for your food and no where near as friendly to my kids as Sumo is. read more
