It didn't even have Crab Rangoon or Wonton soup which is a staple at Asian restaurants. It had a very limited selection. The food was good, the pepper chicken and egg rolls were the best part. Paid around 16 for my food and I will say that it was the worse Chinese food I have ever eaten. I don't normally use the W word but wow. The rice had hard pieces in it. Assuming undercooked rice. Very bland. I ordered steamed rice as you can't go wrong with that. They got my order wrong and gave me fried rice. The beef and the shrimp were ok. That's just it. The broccoli was crunchy which was good. I ordered an egg roll and it was different. But a good different. I won't be going back at all. The place was crowded. I've been going to Chen's since I was a kid when Michael and Patsy owned it. My meal every time was a bowl of egg drop soup and fried dumplings. Everything was obviously fresh, homemade, and delicious. It was my favorite Chinese food in Cleveland County. Since they sold it, the quality of the food has decreased significantly. The dumplings are obviously store bought, the sauce is watered down and less flavorful, and the soup lacks flavor. It's disappointing. Not sure why they changed anything. The fried rice and the egg rolls are still good and I am glad they still have the homemade hot mustard. read more

Went on a Sunday and enjoyed the lunch buffet. The egg drop soup was perfect. Egg rolls seemed to be fresh made and not frozen. There was a nice variety of dishes and I enjoyed it much better than mega buffets I've tried. I'll be going back with my hubby who also loves good Chinese. read more

I wish I had taken pictures, but this place is amazing. I moved to North Carolina from Chicago and have tried so many Chinese restaurants. This is the best one I have been to. I will definitely be coming back again just for the food. The server was very friendly and attentive as well. Considering the choices of Chinese Buffets in Shelby, this was the best choice, or was it? The place is small and really loved by locals. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why. It is tiny, cramped and not really that clean. The buffet should be called a Micro Buffet - the absolute smallest buffet I have ever seen. Maybe seven items. Two stations, a hot food station and a salad bar. I did not eat the salad bar as to me, it looked uneatable and just nasty. The hot food section has your typical Chinese food. Sesame Chicken, Lo-Mein, plain fried chicken (sweet n sour in another tray, that was cold), some kind of pork veggy mix (maybe chicken, dunno), Fried Rice, etc....... Honestly I just ate the Sesame Chicken. Which was the most popular and the tray was empty most of the lunch period. But, hey, that means it was fresh. I am not sure if they make their own sauce, but it was super sweet. There were these giant egg rolls on the buffet, I have never seen logs this big. Over fried, hard, tasteless. They actually left a bitter taste in my mouth. As far as the service, couldn't tell ya, the place was slammed, I did not see the server after he brought drinks. The served free fried wonton strips and sweet sauce to the table. The portions were huge! That's a mans hand to give you the scale of how huge my plate was. The almond chicken was different then it used to, but it was still really good! It was served on a bed of cooked cabbage and some fried rice. The egg roll was on point! read more

Chens used to be the go-to place for Chinese food in Shelby. No more. They literally use plain oily spaghetti noodles as a sorry excuse for lo mein. The black pepper chicken on the lunch menu was simply warmed over from the day before - And tough as shoe leather. The rest of the items were just bland. read more

The worst Asian food I've ever had and that's coming from an Asian person! Never in all my life have I ever seen A restaurant use spaghetti noodles for Lo mein instead of egg noodles! Who does that?!?! That crap was so disgusting I took a bite of it and had to spit it out in a napkin, what a waste of $8. We ordered lettuce wraps to go, and we get a box with what would go inside the lettuce and a sandwich bag with a quarter cut lettuce. If I'm paying $7 for lettuce wraps, then they should already be made! Also the crab ragoon was undercooked. I absolutely hate rating a place 1 star, but this is one of those places that you unfortunately have to. If you're looking for Chinese, this is the place to get it. I've been going since I moved here, I go like 4 times a week, and I always get the same thing. Honey sesame chicken is a must it is the BEST you will ever have. And it's consistently good. I also get white rice and lo mein for sides. This is a Shelby must eat, and prices are good to, as well as portions. My boyfriend and I split the chicken and we're always both full at the end. YOU MUST TRY!! read more

Looks like all the reviews for Chen's are old. Here's a current one. We went on 3/13/20 and everything was excellent! The nicest people ever. We started with egg rolls and pot stickers, which were really good, especially the pot stickers. Because we had not been there before, they brought egg drop soup on the house. It was delicious and much more hearty than the usual egg drop soup. I had the Orange Chicken and my husband had Sizzling Seafood and both were great. Loved the sauce on the Orange Chicken. Fried bananas were dessert,. They were good, but I'm not much of a banana person. Definitely will be back! read more

I was in town for work and needed a good vegetarian spot for lunch. A local recommended this place to me. They do have a lunch buffet which is what everyone seemed to be eating but it was meat based so I ordered the Hunan vegetables off of the menu and added steamed tofu. I drove past this restaurant a few times, and finally decided to try their cuisine. Although it does not look like much from the outside, its nicely decorated inside, warm and cozy with friendly staff, they greeted their customers warmly and the customer obviously love them. It was like looking at families coming for dinner. The reason I'm giving them five star although my food was awful, when I spoke to customers one guy he had come in earlier and had the buffet and was now coming to get dinner to take home. Everyone like the food, even the family coming in with surely teenagers, the teens smiled, I'm going to chalk it up to just what I had. Although the shrimp fried rice was okay, the fried chicken drums was horrible, burnt and quite frankly if you value the teeth in your head, please avoid these, they were obviously probably the brand great value and frozen and just thrown in hot grease, I bought two orders and had to throw them away on account they were so inedible. But based on the customers, the overall vibe and how the patrons love the food. I'm inclined to try them again. read more

Attentive service, water glasses kept filled, quiet traditionally decorated dining room with walled-in booths giving an intimate feeling. Loved the fact that my Cashew Chicken didn't have a bunch of celery for filler, just mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and warer chestnuts with the cashews and chicken. The dinner portion is too much food- the dinner "combination" is a more manageable portion with fried rice and an egg roll for the same price. I love the walled-in concept to help you forget you're right off of a busy road. I've been eating at Chen's for at least 15 years and it has never disappointed me or anyone I know. It's consistently been clean and the food is always a step above any other Chinese restaurant in (atleast) the state of North Carolina. The sesame chicken is always delicious, and over the years I've ordered sezchuan chicken, vegetable fried rice, egg rolls, steamed pork dumplings, egg drop soup, as well as had my fair share of the buffet. The food is a little less greasy than some of the other Chinese restaurants in the area, and I can't reiterate how well they've managed to stay consistent. The wait staff and owners are always welcoming. I recommend Chen's to anyone who is driving through on Hwy 74, or any locals looking for reliable take-out for their family! read more

I received a lot of vegetables with my little bit of rice (the rice box wasn't full), very little beef and shrimp. Absolutely disgusting!!!! I have never in my life had chinese food (or even food in general) this bad! The shrimp sauce has the consistency of pudding, the lo mein was nothing but spaghetti noodles in oil, the rice tasted like chemicals, the shrimp still had the tails on them, the steak was crunchy, the broccoli was raw.
