Sometimes being an active member of the Yelp! Community requires you to go places you wouldn't normally go...which explains why I recently went tanning. I figured I would try Sun City because they obviously have a sense of humor. I mean, seriously, they wouldn't name a place you go to make your skin darker after a symbol of apartheid injustice in South Africa unless you had a really twisted sense of humor right? It's not just ignorance...it's clever... Right? ...anybody? Anyway, I checked into booth four of their 11 booths because I saw on the Sun City Web Site that Karl Wolf tanned there (yes, THE Karl Wolf! cue the crickets). Karl must have felt a real connection with this place because of his song that Toto wrote called Africa and Sun City's aforementioned South African namesake. But I digress. Since this was my first tanning experience, the staff was helpful in telling me what to expect and what I should do. I put on those silly little goggles and before I knew it I was cooking...literally! A few minutes later I was out and feeling a little toasted. My own SPF habits and preference for the shade are an obvious foible to the whole tanning pitch. I figure my time scurrying from place to place during hot days is enough to provide the proper dose of Vitamin E, but you know... there was a time when I actually worked at a tanning salon. Its true-- I could never truly rep the industry in all authenticity, but it was a part-time job and I'm fairly certain my skin tone reminded clients of what they were trying to forget. Yes, this is the typical tanning salon scene. Handfuls of pretty girls with unnatural darkness flittering around, as radio music plays and beachy hues prevail. The beds seem to have gotten more advanced since my days as a working girl, with body conscious monstrosities to zip and zap you in 10 minutes flat. Of course, timing is determined on your skin tone-- the lighter you are, the shorter amount of time. Its a gradual build up, so from your first visit onwards, clients can increase their timing by 1-2 minutes each time. The girls see here seem to be bubbly and sweet, and properly inforcing the rules and restrictions of indoor tanning. With a long row of booths for bronzing, stand-up beds, and a spray tan option to boot, Sun City is as decent a spot as any other. This is a cosmological indulgence that will cost you a fair investment (lotion, extra sessions to start, etc) but some people love their tans. read more

I did not have a good experience here. It was not clean and the girls at the desk seemed more intent on texting than tanning. I felt like I was inconveniencing them. I did pick up a nasty infection though. Thanks for that. Ugh. read more

It makes me sad to see bad or mediocre reviews for this place. If I could rate it higher I would. I am a self tanner by bottle and have tanned in beds in the past. I am used to old beds with bulbs burned out, long wait times, pushy sales people and lengthy contracts. Sun City has none of these. The service has always been substantial. One of the girls who works in the evening is a delight and she always strikes up a conversation - she's so sweet! Definitely makes you feel valued. I purchased an unlimited package. It's around $80 a month. Very good for the service and the selection of beds. You're always helped right away and can get into a room instantly. You get five minutes to prepare and I was informed this the first time I went in. Normally to disrobe, lotion up and get the music and googles ready takes me about 3 or 4. 5 minutes is plenty of time. Also I purchased a lotion from a recommendation as a starter lotion with a good scent. It was $30 plus tax. It is about $20 on Amazon - plus shipping and tax - very confused about other reviews saying they are selling $18 lotions for $60. I checked some other lotions I was interested in purchasing and I have never seen a high mark up like that. They also do deals to get higher priced lotions cheaper if you buy packages. The studio itself is clean and tidy. They offer sample lotions of about $2-$8 to try before committing to a bigger bottle. That's nice to offer to customers. They also have a referral card to refer your friends for a free tan. Even though tanning isn't the cheapest habit I'll be continuing to go here cause I love the experience and the results. This is the only place I will go to tan from now on. Amazing service, extremely knowledgable employees and the salon is always clean! New beds, new spray tan machines, how can you go wrong?? Oh.. and monthly discounts & cheap Sunday tans - always a plus! read more

Be sure to give yourself 5 minutes to undress from your winter gear, allow others in front of you to use the bathroom, fully disrobe, apply lotion on your body, set up foil cones, get out your iphone and select some music, lie down and have the lamps turn off 1 minute after settling in! Then spend 5 minutes having the counter rep tell you from another room about their policy and that you now have to get your clothes on and leave with no apology or offering. This was my second time there. At no time was I "WARNED" about getting myself fully prepared and to lie down within 5 minutes of getting in the room. I was just questioned of why it took 12 minutes for me to get ready. This is not good customer service. I bought a package of 5 visits. I've used 1/5 of the premium lotion which has gone to waste. This is supposed to be a pleasurable experience and it was far from that. Your procedure was strongly enforced but hardly illustrated when I joined. read more

WELL. It's funny because literally a day after my review of this place got review of the day I became less impressed with this place, darn. So tanning lotions are ridiculously expensive, they range from like $30-$70. I have therefore been trying to sample different lotions to see which I find best. I tried a $6 sample and thought it worked well, but the full size retailed for like $60, so the lady at the counter told me about one that's almost identical but is $45, so I bought it. ANYWAY, it wasn't like the other one, it had this dark dark dark bronzer in it and I looked streaky and ridiculous. I don't think it was any fault of the lady at the front desk, but I asked if they had any exchange policy (which they typically do for any place that sells expensive skin care stuff..), they didn't, and so she said she'd leave my name for the manager to call me but it was probably a waste of time. The manager didn't call me. Anyway, the best part is I checked reviews of this particular lotion to see if anyone had the same issue, and it is $18 on amazon!!! Don't buy lotion here! The tans are reasonably priced but save yourself some money and buy online! The only reason I would prefer to try it in person was in case it didn't work on my skin, but you can't do anything about it either way so why not save some money? read more

Kind of a cool, trendy spot. I expected the rooms to be a little more upscale. The overall decor is sloppy and dated upon closer examination. The staff are usually great; Kat is a breath of fresh air. read more
