Sun Seng Supermarket is in a small strip center of mostly Vietnamese shops, this one being the largest. Even so, it is small for a supermarket and shows its age. While there were nice sized produce and seafood sections, the aisles are stacked high with boxes atop the shelves. Everything looks like they have been there for a while. We were looking for a few specific things (bean noodles, dark soy sauce, mango, roast duck). We found everything after a bit of searching, but had to pay attention to the "Sell by" dates, as many things were on the old side of the street. Ended up with Thai noodles, Chinese soy, and Indonesian cookies. The half roast duck was delicious and cleavered well into chunks of meat and fat with rich savory flavor. Service was adequate, although no one on the floor knew how to smile, nor make customers feel welcome. There are much better Asian markets in Heavy Chill and Philly. Not a place I would visit a second time. read more

Sun Seng is a good Vietnamese focused supermarket where I can also get most of the Chinese products I want to buy. Location is a bit of a pain in the butt to get to, but if I structure my Cherry Hill shopping run correctly, stopping here is pretty painless. They have a decent and reasonably priced produce section, a fresh seafood counter and an extensive selection of dry goods. The $5 banh mi in the front of the store are not the finest examples of banh mi, but they are convenient and good value. Extra points for the surveillance stills of suspected shoplifters posted on the way out. Beware, however, that the bathrooms are truly disgusting. read more

Stocked up on black vinegar, sweet soy sauce, broad bean paste, fish sauce, and some dried ingredients. Lots of fairly priced fresh produce also. It's not the best Asian market I've ever visited, but it's got a pretty large selection nonetheless. Big bonus is the amazing restaurant that is located in the same shopping plaza. Worth the trip for both, but not for this supermarket alone. This isn't to say you can't fill most of your Asian cooking needs here on the cheap. You can. And they have fresh fish in the tanks, although it makes me sad to see them all crammed in there together. Large produce department. Good selection of sauces & whatnot. Recently went grocery shopping for my Asian essentials with none other than my mother. I have to admit, it felt like it has declined. I wasn't able to grab what I wanted or looking for. Some of the items did not look fresh. Looks like it has been sat out for way too long. Be careful what you pick from the freezer or shelves as they can be expired. Aisles are narrow due to boxes stacked and just disorganized. Plus on the weekends it is super packed. If you don't mind the drive, I suggest you check out the other Asian market that just opened in Cherry Hill. Hung Vuong to be exact! read more

Sunseng Supermarket is in a strip mall on the westbound side of Route 38. It is unclear what the best way is to get in and out of the parking area from eastbound Route 38 but there are jughandles and overpasses in the area for making U-turns. Parking is plentiful and shared between the supermarket and a number of Asian restaurants. The supermarket is spacious and the produce and meat sections are quite large. The dry goods and imported goods sections seem to favor more Vietnamese goods, so we didn't find as much to buy here as we did at the two other Asian grocers in the area but it is a great option for the Vietnamese community. There is a lot to see here and the little bakery / dessert shop is fantastic. And finally, service at the checkout register is good and fairly efficient. read more

When Sunseng first opened, they were the only place short of the aquarium that I saw fresh, live shrimp swimming around. I could kick myself for not trying them, as they have yet to get them back, but things started off great! Yes, all vegetables in the grocery section were labeled simply 'vegetable', but that is the kind of challenge we like as foodies, right? It's green, it should basically taste like (spinach, green beans, leprechaun poo) so what the heck, let's try it. Heck they have Durian! This place is like a treasure hunt! I agree with David that the fish is hit or miss. A few months ago the fish department smelled more like the dumpster out back than a fresh fish area, but I can happily say that since then, it has been well cleaned up and everything looked nice on my last visit. The clincher for me is when I ask them if the fish is sushi grade. If they say no, that means there's something in/about it that needs to be cooked, probably cooked quite a bit, and I'll pass on that. I have yet to buy meat from them, as I have concerns similar to that with the fish, but the variety is simply astounding. There is nothing wasted, and I mean nothing. My son and I wandered the meat isle astounded by vac-pacs of duck tongue, blood jelly, and black duck (with head no less!) He giggled at the various testicle and 'pizzel' offerings, while I scanned my mental library of recipes that I would use pig uterus with. Upping the ante a bit was the fact they had both regular and 'premium' uterus. There's also an interesting dried meat section, Balut (fertilized duck embryo) and mystery pastry section, none of which could I bring myself to try. Hey, call me a wuss, but you eat right up. I may change my mind if I see you pack a half dozen of them away. The noodle isle is huge, with hot pots, ramen, and every conceivable noodle lining the walls in every flavor you can think of. The hot sauce isle is, as noted by David, well stocked. Various ethnic items and restaurant supplies are in the end isles, along with by the case beverages. Nothing like a 40lb back of dehydrated black mushrooms and a huge case of strawberry ramune! Just hope the two don't mix in your car. A fun selection of imported candies and cookies takes up another whole isle and various end caps throughout the store, providing needed bribery to children as you wander the aisles in awe of the selection. Let me note the vegetable selection is fantastic, and I stop routinely for fresh avocados. The fact they have both the normal black avocado and its larger green skinned Florida version makes for excellent eating all year round. Pre-prepared foods include peking duck, as well as various roasted meats on hooks. Last visit had duck, quail, racks of ribs, and frogs all lined up basting under heat lamps. Yummy indeed! An herbal shop/customer service counter is your final stop at the front of the store as you approach the registers. The balance of the front of the store is lined with huge 50+ pound bags of every type of rice you can imagine. Cashiers are pleasant and efficient, prices can't be beat. Overall, you'll probably avoid 25% of stuff because you don't know what to do with it, 25% because it's scary/off/bad, and really enjoy the remaining 50%. Shop wisely and you will be rewarded! This is our spot to pick up Asian grocery food along with Hmart. My wife is Vietnamese so when we need to buy our Rau Ram to go with the our snails feast (which you can buy frozen snails here too!)...this is where we go. We lived in Edison, NJ and farther north even where originally we had not only the bigger (and way better) Hmarts, Kam On Market, 99 Ranch, Mitsuwa Japanese market and more. Anyway - great market. Great produce area, plenty of Asian products including Thai, Chinese and more. Frogs, live fish (tilapia = delicious) and plenty of good meats. Large Asian market with a diverse selection of items. The Korean Bul go gi meat I got was high quality for a pretty cheap price. However, the best item was the roasted piglet they had for sale on Sunday morning. Super crispy, crunch skin, with succulent melt in your mouth morsels of deliciousness. Upon eating the pork the only thing that came to mind is the scene from the Istanbul episode of "No Reservations" when the hostess asks Anthony Bourdain whether he has tried anything like what they were eating. Being from New Jersey, we used to go to the Philadelphia asian supermarkets because the other asian market on route 70 (in NJ) never had the brands or select items we preferred. But ever since Sunseng opened up, we no longer travel to Philly for our groceries. Granted, their bittermelon and a few other produce items could be a little pricey, I still enjoy the convenience of not having to cross the bridge to get stuff you wouldn't find at Wegmans (lotus root, ginger candy, chinese sausage, etc). & you have to try a Vietnamese iced coffee from their bakery section, it's the perfect blend of syrupy espresso with condensed milk all over a cup of ice. read more

I usually come in on Friday or Saturday and have a good experience. However, today I purchased several single dry instant noodle packs and was told at the that two brands had to be purchased as a pack. I explained that the package were out as singles on the shelf. The two young ladies at the register created single pack prices at 1.99 per. Why would you create a price of 1.99 on single when whole 5-6 count pack is 6.99. Than argued me down stating I must have open the packs I told them no but the Asian lady in front of me who had just purchased several cases also just purchased the singles with $1.00 price on each. Love this little market. It's a great place to get meat and vegetables. The prices are usually better than you'll find elsewhere. They recently increased their bakery. My brother told me that they make awesome croissants. They also make bahn mi, but I think that might only be on the weekend. There are also sometimes roasted duck for sale. They have live fish available. Interesting Carribean spices and obviously Asian spices. My go to place for durian. read more

Drove past this supermarket on our way to Philly and stopped by on the way home. Was kind of surprised to see a huge Asian market in Cherry Hill, NJ. I guess there's a large Asian/Viet community in that area. Sunseng was a good size and had good selection from fresh meats to canned goods. We were able to pick up all our Asian staples. I like this store. They have a variety of vegetarian foods, flavored seitan and tofu, in the refrigerated section and in the frozen section. This whole complex is like a little Vietnam Town in itself. The supermarket has a typical selection of Asian food--great prices, but be alert for freshness and quality. A good price doesn't necessarily mean good quality. Regardless, there are some things here you're definitely not gonna find in your typical grocery store--specialty sauces, your choice of any frozen dumpling, specialty Asian snacks and candies, spices and tea on the cheap and in bulk... the list goes on. Great stuff. But what I really wanted to comment on is the new banh mi stand that's opened up in the corner here. Actually, the first time I tried going here, it was too late and they weren't making any more sandwiches (Mid-February 2013). The second time (March 15, 2013), out of twelve items on the menu, only six were available. However, they were really great about following directions (e.g., no mayo). As for the actual sandwich? Excellent! The roll used was reminiscent of an Amoroso roll--that is, softer and easier to rip through, as opposed to harder, more baguette-like rolls from other banh mi joints. The chicken was more cured as opposed to freshly cooked, and well sauced. The vegetables were just pickled enough without being too salty. Want to try a fresh banh mi? They have everything and anything you can think of that's chinese or view, not so much korean but every other type of Asian food you can definitely get there. The only negative was some of the prices seemed higher than those we have paid at other Asian grocery stores. Still, the variety of items from many different countries was overwhelming. This started out 4-star, now bout 3.2 star..first opened, the seafood was fresh, my parents & I, bought tons fresh fish, but once open for little longer, as you rolled in there, it did smell like rotting fish.Not a good thing, when you have meat & seafood. So they have stopped buying from them-seafood that is. The meat area, still not bad , for being in Pennsauken/Camden area. Some of veggie can buy , some can't . There is nt anyone checking if they are rotting, getting rid of the overripe, or bad items, so its going to big mess. First off, I am a US born, Chinese-American and used to cook Chinese at home a lot until my daughter became a toddler and kept asking for chicken nuggets. Today was my first trip today with specific ingredients on my list. The veggie/produce selection is good and reasonably priced for NJ. Just bought some pretty fresh looking napa for $0.59/lb vs $3.99/lb at Wegmans. Also got some gai lan (chinese broccoli) for $1.29/lb. Everything was clearly labeled. I just moved from SoCal where 99 Ranch stores dominate and everything in the Asian markets here in South Jersey cost more than in Cali --probably due to a much smaller Asian population and less competition, lower turnover of products/sales volume. I didn't buy any meat or fish today but nothing looked outlandishly pricey or lacking in freshness for an Asian market. It was very clear walking in that it's more a Vietnamese market than a Chinese market but I was able to find most things I needed for my Chinese dishes with the exception of non-expired pickled mustard greens for my noodle dish! I was a bit appalled by the dates on the packages I found (package dates from 2007!). Most pickled items stamp the pack date on the seam and then have about a 12 month shelf life so those packages I was picking through were all expired by a year! Some simply stamp an expiration date and I found many for 6 months earlier this year. So sad! So no pickled food purchases for me today. I have only checked out one other Asian grocery store in the Cherry Hill/South Jersey area (Asian Food Markets in Barclay Farm Shopping Center) and found their prices to be a bit higher. But I will have to return there to look for the pickled mustard greens (zha cha). I was hoping this store would have everything I needed so I wouldn't have to make another trip out tomorrow with two kiddos in tow. The hot foods section looked a bit bare but the ducks and the roasted pork looked worth trying. I would definitely try the Pho 38 in the same plaza (Saigon Plaza on Route 38) since the plaza seems to be a Vietnamese enclave. read more

I wish i had found this place the day it opened! The store is clean, the staff is friendly and attentive, and have knowledge of the product. A man working in the aisle took the time to answer questions about fish sauce. The vegetable selection is huge, and all veggies purchased exceeded my expectations.
