I went to a party that they have all the Filipino dishes ordered here. The dinuguan I feel something is missing. It needed more vinegar and this one it's very thin sauce and it seems the blood is not very deep black in color. The pork and chicken adobo tasted so much salt that I could not eat it at all. The wings looks like it's overly boiled. I have dined here when it first open. After a few years now this is the 2nd time I am trying them. I still did not like it. I have a deep love for lumpia since like 2nd grade. Once I saw Manila Cafe had them, I knew I had to get over here and happy it's close by. For a party I was heading to, I thought best idea ever, get a catering size of lumpia. I think there was like 120 rolls, about 45 bucks. Super easy to place the order and pick up was quick. The place was packed when I arrived and can get crowded being part cafe, part food mart and the hot line, but the food looked amazing. Came back to order an array of food for lunch. I tried a little bit of everything and it was all so good! The star of the show were the grilled pork bbq skewers. Reminded me of Japanese yakitori. The sauce had a nice sweet glaze and was grilled perfectly. The lumpia was outstanding and something you can never go wrong with. Pancit bihon was also delicious and had a nice amount of veggies/shrimp/pork. Chicken adobo is usually my favorite and it was still good, but this time it was lacking some flavor. The flavor just wasn't strong enough. Meat was still very tender and the sauce with rice is still a winner! Lechon kawali and Ginsiang monggo were two new items for me. I'm normally not the biggest pork belly fan but this was very tasty. If you ask for the darker burnt pieces, chances are you will not get the chewy fatty pieces. The mung bean porridge was good especially with rice, but I wouldn't order this again. Wasn't bad at all and very healthy with fish/veggies inside. Now when you go to a turo turo Filipino spot like Manila Cafe, you may find yourself second guessing some dishes that are out being warmed. In this case it was the sisig. How can a sisig still taste good when left out for turo turo? Well let me tell you that there is a way, because Manila Cafe know how to do it! No the sisig was not sizzling nor was there a raw egg that you had to mix into it, but the flavors and textures of a proper sisig were there. The crunch from the cartilage to the crispiness of the pork/lechon and mild spiciness sealed the deal. Went twice this past weekend. Was staying in the area and glad I paid this little gem a visit. It's a mini grocery store with a steam table for turo-turo style which literally means point-point when ordering food. The place is clean and they had tons of food to choose from. The pancit is good and lumpiang Shanghai was 4 for a $1!!!! What?!?!? Should have tried the adobo for a trifecta! I ordered the laing and lechon kawali with pancit and I didn't love the laing as much. Lechon was good though. Got a halo2 to go with ube ice cream and it hit the spot. The 2nd time I came back I got the grilled pork and tokwa't baboy (tofu with pork) . All was tasty. Manila cafe is super cheap and it's like my fam's cooking. Bout to start calling the kind woman working the counter my Tita lol! I have picked up 2-4 platters just to enjoy over the course of a few days. The platter comes with 2 items of your choice with a side of rice or pancit (this is extra $). Average cost of the platter is ~$7 w/ pancit and even less with rice. I have enjoyed the lechon, kare kare, chicken adobo, pancit bihon, beef kaldereta, chicken/pork inihaw, pork afritada/menudo, turon, and halo halo. I came here with my best friend to try Filipino food. I heard great things about this place and wanted to try the halo halo. I ended up paying around $30 for a combo meal, halo halo and some drinks. Made the drive into NJ for this little Philippino restaurant. With rave Yelp reviews, it was on the Yelp bucket list for some time. First, what I loved the most about the experience, is the lady behind the counter. She was extremely polite, funny and very giving. We ordered two combos. The first, white rice with oxtail in peanut sauce, and chicken Adobe. The second, noodles with pork stew, and beef stew. The lady was kind enough to give us a small portion of another beef curry dish to sample. We ended the meal with halo halo dessert and 2 pieces of fried plantain. Each dish was flavorful, so I wont comment much on those. Unfortunately, there were a few things I disliked. 1) The white rice was hard,and probably cooked much earlier in the day or previous day. We were there around 3pm on a Saturday. 2) I'm used to oxtail made Caribbean or Indian style, and not in a peanut sauce. I didnt care much for this dish. To each his own, I guess. It just didnt bring the flavor of the oxtail out. 3) Lastly, it was my first experience eating halo halo. The ice cream was absolutely delicious (tried mango and jackfruit flavors). The rest of the dessert, again I didnt care much for. Under the ice cream was some kind of ice mixture. Under that was jello cubes and a couple different types of beans. I work in a small office in Philadelphia with a number of coworkers, who, shall I say, are less than adventurous when it comes to eating. I think they were a little bit scared. I called in advance and ordered a small pan of pancit bihon and 10 skewers each of chicken and pork barbecue for pick up the night before the lunch. The Manila Café is in the Wawa strip mall off of Hainesport Rd. near Larchmont. The strip mall is having some improvements made. The Manila café is a combination of a turo turo style Filipino restaurant and Filipino grocery store. The space is very open and clean. Turo turo style is very popular with most of the local small Filipino restaurants. The way this works is one goes to the counter and chooses the dishes from several heated trays. There is usually a combination price. This type of restaurant does not have table service and provides plastic knives and forks and disposable plates. It is no frills. Inside this style of Filipino restaurants there are not many lily-white boys such as myself to be found, unless such as myself his wife happens to be a Filipina. Most of the clientele will be Filipinos. The food is basic and good but not spectacular, and portions are large and the prices cheap. Manila Cafe serves the standard Filipino comfort foods more or less; Adobo, Menudo, Bangus, Pork BBQ, Dinuguan, Caldereta, etc. My in-laws seem to enjoy it here. Manila Café was playing a Tagalog show on their television which was pretty cool. The Manila Café has a decent selection of breads and sweets and their Ensaymada (Sweet Cheesy Bread) was fresh and tasty. They also serve Halo Halo and my wife tells me theirs is pretty good. Some Viet restaurants will serve a similar crushed ice and fruit dessert. It is not really my thing but still refreshing on a hot day. Manila Café is A-OK + for this non Filipino and worthy of 3.5 to 4 Yelp stars.
