This is one of our go to places for great food. Their pot roast nachos are the best I've ever had and we always get their truffle fries. I love the older gentleman at the wine counter who's always so helpful. However, I am a little disappointed they are never consistent with their food service. Some days they are on point, some days they're super slow/just don't show up. Lately it's been more the latter. Here is one example: We went on a Friday night (8/26) and it wasn't that busy. The host had trouble seating us for some reason. We finally got seated and we waited for a long time for someone to serve us. I watched about 3-4 staff just hanging around the bar area just chilling and I was beginning to think no one knew we were even at our table. No one ever looked in our way. Finally, after a few more minutes of waiting, my husband and I got up and left and went somewhere else to get food. I doubt they noticed that either. I don't know if it's because the service is not streamlined or if they are just short staffed, but they really need to get it together or we'll just stop going altogether. read more

We were invited to this place and were not immediately impressed. It's located in the middle of a strip mall with not much parking. However, once inside we were surrounded by hundreds of bottles of wine and other goodies. Arriving for an early dinner was a good move because the place quickly filled. The service was very good and our meals were also good. It's mostly sandwiches but there were some entrees. The portions were a nice size for the price. I've been a regular diner Sunsinger for the past 7 years and unfortunately the quality of food and service has dramatically declined. The last several times we've dined here, we've waited for 45+ minutes for entrees. The last two times the truffle fries came out cold and hard. Last night we waited 45 minutes after ordering for two sandwiches and cold fries while our waiter ignored us and refused to make eye contact. I overheard the table next to us complain to the waiter that their food was cold also. I'm disappointed because this used to be one of our go-to places, but the last three visits have been so underwhelming, we won't be returning. I suspect their kitchen is understaffed, but in that case they should consider not seating the place to full capacity. read more

This place is a gem! Had such a wonderful lunch here with salad and charcuterie board. Salad was fresh and large serving. Also had the "local board" charcuterie with great selection of cheeses, jams, nuts and a nice bread. Waiter (Eric W) was perfection...attentive but not hovering. Who doesn't love wine bars?! This place is amazing and one of the gems of living in Champaign Urbana. It has been a few years since we came here but we enjoyed being able to pick up some random gifts and wine to bring to a party! Their wine selection is pretty big but not like Benny's but this place serves food. Food from what I remember was okay but I do remember that the server did bring us the wrong drinks and ended up serving us Serena which was a blush Moscato. It was a very delicious mistake! My wife and I try to find Serena everywhere we go and sometimes it's hard to find. Luckily, Petes Fresh Market in Oak Park started to carry it. *Potential Scam* I was craving some bread pudding and decided to pick some up to go with my girlfriends When I got there, Kaitlyn directed us towards the deli counter. The gentleman working the counter was really nice and we ordered bread pudding which we saw listed for $6 on their signage. Once we rang up our order with Kaitlyn, she said the bread pudding was $8.50 and our total was over $9. I didn't see the bread pudding ring up, only the total at the end. I politely mentioned how it was $6 on the signage but she rudely said that's not what it says in the system. I said oh, well it's weird that the sign said $6. She just looked at me and retorted that the system said $8.50 and that's that. I said I get that but could she check out the sign. She didn't want to but said she could check the other computer. In the other computer it was $7.50. The part that was kind of sketchy is that in the same computer that said $8.50, the bread pudding rang up to $7.50 and my total was $8. I'm not sure if she added gratuity towards her self or if was a system error. Either ways, I paid $8 when the board said $6. There was obviously some inconsistency in pricing The bread pudding overall was tasty! I'd definitely get it again but check your receipt and make sure you aren't getting charged different prices that what you expect. read more

Had a wonderful time at Sun Singer! My husband, dog, and I sat outside on the patio. I was so excited that they were dog friendly and several people came out to great our little lady. Our server Gabrielle was amazing and was very informative. She made great recommendations and was enthusiastic about the food and wine. 10/10 I will come back just for her service and the food is a great additional perk! Just made the whole experience great! Even afterwards we went over to the other side and bought the bottle of wine she recommend. I was so pleased with my experience at Sun Singer today. After a disappointing visit to a nearby large format wine & spirits store, I popped into Sun Singer on a whim. I was quickly approached by Doug, who took the time to answer my questions and take me through some of his favorite wines in the shop. I know a bit about wine, working in 2 bars/shops in Northern California, and I can tell you that the selection of wines here is highly curated, very good quality, and represents a wide range of prices to fit any budget. At no point did I feel pressured or dumb. I highly recommend Sun Singer if you're looking for interesting, high-quality, gift-worthy bottles. My husband and I found this Jem on a day trip we were taking. I had half of a Jamaican chicken wrap with half a cup of soup. Both the sandwich and soup had great flavor and quality ingredients. My husband had the pulled pork and he said it was good as well. They also have a wine bar with a huge menu of different wines to select from with cheeses too. We had an outstanding dinner here - possibly the best dinner I've had in C-U! My wife and I started out sharing a large crab stuffed portobello mushroom. For our entrees we split 2 of the Valentine's Day specials : Lobster tail and steak medallions. Both were very flavorful and cooked to perfection. Even the accompanying sides were great. We dove into a big slice of tiramisu for dessert that our server recommended. It was excellent. Our server was perfect - attentive without being annoying, friendly without being obnoxious, and able to answer menu questions. The restaurant itself is classy without being pretentious. Finally was able to eat here after trying three other times to get in. Our party was seated at a table for four (there were four of us). The waiter brought us glasses of water and asked us what we wanted to drink. We weren't sure, and asked if we could have a moment or two. He left with a disgusted look on his face. He returned and took our drink and food order less than enthusiastically. When our food arrived, you would have thought we told him to cut his left arm off just for asking for a pepper shaker. The food was good, and we enjoyed it, but the waiter (Coy W.) put a big damper on the entire experience. If he doesn't like his job, maybe he needs something else. Just before we were leaving, he came by our table and told us that we needed to leave because a party of four had the exact table we were sitting at reserved, and had arrived at the restaurant. Went to dinner here with my parents and brother as part of a day trip to visit the lil bro. First off this part restaurant part specialty shop is located in a strip mall. There is outdoor seating but it was quite strange to be sitting outside on the sidewalk of a strip mall. We started off with some drinks, my dad ordered a beer, my mom an iced tea and I got the sangria. I mean it is a wine store of all places. The sangria was definitely homemade and not from one of those pre-made mixes/bottles. It was surprisingly refreshing. For starters we got the Spanish cheese and meats platter - it came with a lot less than we anticipated. As having lived in Spain before and being Cuban myself, the platter didn't really live up to its namesake. I wouldn't recommend ordering it. It included a few slices of cheese, meats, some olives and some weird jams with a side of slices of white bread. As a result, we were prompted to order the cheese curds. My dad hailing from the Cheese State always makes us on the look out for good cheese curds. These were really just bite-sized mozzarella sticks with a side of marinara sauce. They were good, but really how can you screw up anything fried. For the main course, we ordered the ruben with fries (bro), the Ahi tuna salad (mom), BLT with fries (dad) and the J. Wellington "Whimpy" burger with a side of sweet potato waffle fries (me). I had the burger and woof it was SO JUICY! The mixture of melted gooey cheese, the special burger sauce and just the juice from the burger itself made for a special experience. The fries on its own were very good too. For me, the meal made up for the lackluster appetizers. My brother inhaled the ruben with only good things to say. My dad was less than impressed with the BLT. My mom wished the cucumbers were skinned and cubed instead of the huge pieces on her salad, but the tuna itself was good. She had a hard time finishing the salad because it was quite large. Restaurant review I still can't believe it has been so long since I last came back to Sun Singer. My wife still feels that this is the best restaurant in Champaign as they have fresh fish that rotates every week. I decided to come back during restaurant week, however there deals were so so. For dinner they had 7 dollar apps, if you get a cheese plate and 2 glasses of wine it would be 1 price for the 2 glasses of wine, and also 50% off dessert with each entree purchase. Finally they gave a certificate for 10 dollar off brunch if you spent enough money. I did not realize they had seating in a dining room area to the left side of the restaurant which would move the kids away from the bottles of wine that were not kid friendly in the past. Our waiter was quite friendly and took our orders promptly. The cheese plate lacks the presentation of the cheese plate at V Picasso, however I can't complain with the free warm complimentary bread. My main dish was the prime rib that was had perfect flavor and cooked to order. The one downside was the food was only borderline warm and the sides that the prime rib came with were a bit plain. Mash potatoes (reminded me of a cafeteria ice cream scoop serving) and broccoli, sides of asparagus and maybe loaded mash potatoes would compliment this dish better. Finally the tiramisu was good, but the chocolate dressing was a bit much masking the delicate texture and flavors of tiramisu. As this is my wife's favorite restaurant we will be back, however it does carry a hefty cost as our meal cost about 100 dollars with tax and tip and no alcohol. read more

The black bean burger is the best I've had in town and is decently spicy with peppers,cheese, and a creamy sauce. Sweet potato fries are waffle style and not covered in sugar like some places. The draft beer list was good and there were bottles as well to round out the choices. The beer store (attached) has a really nice selection of Belgian and other beers, to include local brews. The meat and cheese options were its best quality, as they have chef inspired additions like jam, dried fruit, fresh fruit, vegetables, and legumes, and they come with delicious slices of fresh baked bread. The prices do add up if you try a few different cured meats and aged cheese, so order carefully. They do have a deli up front with many other selections. I especially liked the prosciutto (a meat that I don't normally enjoy), however theirs was rich and full of flavor. I wasn't as impressed with their other dishes, such as the beef chili and Caesar salad. The calamari were what you'd expect from anywhere. They do have some original cocktails though and I really enjoyed my tequila-based old fashion. The vibe is pretty great for a date - intimate but charming. Pair this with their recent expansion (huge new dining space) and there is a lot of excitement in the air. I ordered a half salad and soup. Their soup of the day tends to be pretty tasty. Today they had a sausage and kale soup that was delicious. I paired the soup with the almond encrusted goat cheese salad --- strong flavors between the goat cheese and balsamic dressing. Yum! The Sun Singer also has a large retail area of craft beers, wines, cheeses, and gift items. I was able to purchase BCBS here earlier this month with no problem. Persistent problem at this restaurant when ordering meat cooked above medium-rare, i.e. medium well or well done. For me twice in recent weeks this request has been seemingly ignored by the chef or line cook. They return medium-rare or rare, perhaps because they feel this is the preferred way meat should be cooked and substitute their judgment for the customer. I don't like rare meat whatever that says about my culinary sophistication. I did not have time on either occasion to return the food, but it has negatively affected my view of this restaurant. It is a good restaurant, somewhat overpriced for the quality of the food, but well above average, so this problem is simply irritating. I wish they would attend to it. read more

Sun Singer is definitely a rare find in the area, especially when you're tired of the campus restaurants on Green St. I came here for to celebrate my friend's graduation and this place was divine. The layout is not exactly fitting for large groups and our party had to push several tables together, but the staff was very accommodating and the ambiance is great for conversation. The restaurant/cafe is inside a winery and is perfect for a casual lunch. They have a deli section with fine cheese and meats. I felt like I was transported to Europe and wish I could take a 3 hour lunch-break just to enjoy it all.... The first thing people told me to get was the LOBSTER BISQUE. And believe me, this is the best! It was so creamy, thick, and full of lobster flavor and goes well with any of their sandwiches. I got their grilled cheese supreme with 2 amazing cheeses (Danish Fontina & Fiscalini Cheddar), granny smith apples and fig jam on challah bread. You'd never think jam would ever go so well in a cheese sandwich, but it does! A half sandwich and cup of soup is $9.75. Their sandwiches some with some olives, fried vegetable crisps and mini pickles. I have yet to try the rest of their extensive menu but their food is well worth the price. read more
