We visited Baxter expecting to have a finer dining experience in the Champaign area. When we arrived, we were greeted and seated promptly. We ordered two of their specialty cocktails, which took a little long to be delivered but subsequently were very good. Next we ordered the stuffed mushrooms, Halibut and filet medallions. Service was a little slow so we decided to just enjoy the time together. Our appetizer arrived and was outstanding. It was a bit of a wait for our entrees to appear and when they did we were disappointed with the wait. The filet was ordered medium well and arrived seared to almost well done other than the very center was cold and red. The halibut was overcooked as well but regardless I decided to enjoy the halibut because it was still palatable. The filet, on the other hand was not. It was tough and just not very good. I fully expected to spend the money on a fine dining experience but didn't feel that experience was met. We will try Baxter again in the future with hopes of a better experience but our history there has been hit and miss! read more

Came in after the Illini beat Maryland on a Saturday evening. No issue with getting a seat right at the bar. Bar tender seemed a bit overworked, vary harried and not super friendly, but reasonably fast. Ordered the gnocchi and filet tips. Started with the Baxter's salad. That was excellent! The gnocchi was promoted as 'crisp' which I found intriguing. Not crisp at all. Standard fair. Filet was okay, but not great. Mushroom sauce was great! Ambiance is that of a classic steak house. I ordered the Ribeye cooked medium, along with the Brussel Sprouts and Mushrooms, and everything came out perfectly prepared and full of flavor. All of the steak options here are delicious, there's usually little to no wait time, and the food comes out fast. The three of us chose this place for a special occasion dinner. My NY steak was crusty and flavorful on the outside and juicy on the inside. We had it with the creamy mashed potato. My Baxter's salad was lovely. My husband got a mocktail, encouraged that the bar can make a non-alcoholic version of just about any of the many cocktails on the menu, at around half the price of the cocktail upon which it was derived. My dining companions had shrimp and scallop pasta with artichoke in a light and soothing sauce, and hearty lamb chops. We received a complimentary gooey cake with chocolate ice cream. Decadent! Plenty of other better choices in Champaign and I wish I chose better. The first off putting experience was the server not being attentive to our table while attending other tables. Drinks were made with too much sugar and sour mix, in which the staff should be retrained on bartending. Food could've been better, temperature, and presentation. I don't like to give these type of reviews and usually just not write them, however, this experience comes back to me every time I have a much better experience which doesn't set the bar high at all in comparison. Hopefully this helps initiate some improvements. read more

Definitely a higher end meal in the CU area! We had the ribeye steak and it was so filling! The meat was cooked to a perfect medium rare, was juicy, and was very nicely flavored! We arrived early on a Saturday evening and we were seated right away the place is dim and good For a date night or secret meet up soon after the place was pretty full so we just beat the rush we came here with the rumors of a great prime rib being served Fridays and Saturdays so we showed up with the idea of having a prime rib dinner and they were pretty spot on the prime rib was awesome and the horseradish sauce was on point so before the main meal I ordered some small plates of wings and drunken mushrooms the wings were cooked perfectly and very flavorful great choice and the drunken mushrooms were really good but messy which I wasn't ready for As the main course arrived it looked as great as it tasted cooked to perfection and taste was very beefy and delicious So next time I have a craving for prime rib I know exactly where to get my fix Enjoy read more

While visiting my mother-in-law, we took her to dinner at Baxter's and what a lovely gem of a place in Champaign! This was our first visit but it won't be our last. We were greeted upon arrival, and had great service from our server, I think her name was Danielle? All dishes ordered were cooked perfectly and not overly seasoned so that the seasoning brought out the best of the food rather than hiding it. My husband ordered the fried catfish which is a favorite of ours and it was hot and sooo good. Not heavily breaded so the delicate fish could shine. I shared the Parmesan Crusted Halibut with my daughter and was a bit worried that it wouldn't be enough but I had more than enough and even gave my husband a bite or two. It was delicate in flavor with the Parmesan and sauce balancing each other. I would highly recommend either the catfish or the Halibut. The other dishes we ordered were the Pretzel Burger and Shrimp and Scallop Scampi and everyone was delighted with their dinner! I didn't get a chance to try their food but I needed to leave a review based on the rudeness of their staff. I brought my family here on a Saturday night and was right off the bat told they had no tables. Not that there were none available at the moment, or that I could wait, but just that there would be none period. In addition I could see several tables that appeared to be open or opening up. Back to visit Baxter's again. It's a comfortable restaurant. It gets busy during Illini events but we did not have to wait long for our table. We've also sat at the bar before and found spots right away. The staff is friendly and very attentive. The steaks are flavorful and cooked the way we wanted. Loved my ribeye! Burgers are good too. The best thing was they have a gluten-free menu that was full of foods we liked. We had the Thai shrimp appetizer on that menu and a filet mignon. We always come back when we're in town. read more

Went in for dinner on a Wednesday night which seems to be the day to go since all shareable plates are half off. I sat at the bar and at first I thought the place was pretty upscale it turned out to be a great place to have a drink unwind and enjoy some food. I started with a pretzel which actually turned out to be a bad choice. Not my favorite but the prime rib sliders made up for my bad first choice. The sliders were great. The pretzel needed to be cooked more since it was cold. The service at the bar was spot on. The drinks were well mixed. The sour cherry old fashioned is highly recommended. Enjoyed our visit here very much. This was a nice steakhouse with quiet ambiance and nice drinks in a roomy dining room. The venue also styled a nice large round bar where one could watch the sports TVs. Lots of Illinois fans as one might expect in a college town, but it was a winner. Our group of four had a round of drinks (the only bad one was a too spicy Bloody Mary) and then dove into the appetizers. We had the meat and cheese block (4 star good and a pretty big serving of everything, the cheeses stood out) and the shrimp cocktail (3 stars for the 5 shrimp but they were just a tad overdone ... unique presentation though in individual spoons). For entrees two of us had the prime rib (4 star nice ... while you won't mistake it for Lawry's, it was a solid offering for something that is getting harder to find at restaurants); another at the table had the lamb chops (5 star stuff and the hit of the night ... nicely done and very tasty); the last at the table had the tomato/basil pasta (2 stars and just OK, but then we made the mistake of ordering pasta at a steakhouse). All in all this was a very nice restaurant. Very clean bathrooms, excellent/attentive service (Claire), nice selection of beers and wines (although the wine pours were pretty small).
