I think things have changed for the better......I saw all the older reviews here on Yelp & stopped by on a whim after the 'more highly rated other place' I went to was disappointing. I figured that it was a 'try us for free' option, so how bad could it be? Well, it was AWESOME, seriously MILES above the 2 other places I went! So maybe there's new management? I was NEVER forced to purchase anything, in fact, after my free spray tan (which they tacked on tons of extras as well for free) both the front desk gals were telling me "give it a couple days & make sure you're happy, then come talk to us if you want package details & we always have specials running of some kind". My tan was AWESOME. The color was AWESOME. It lasted me almost 2 weeks as well. My skin felt AWESOME.....getting the picture here? VERY HAPPY customer! When I went back in there was no wait (I bought a yearly unlimited plan) and I've now been back at least 4 times and NEVER waited. Check in is easy-peasy. Staff always nice. Never any pressure. Also - super important to me - this place is CLEAN. Last 2 I went into made me feel like I was walking on squishy wet stuff on the floor (eeeeew) and walls had stuff/spray on them & hairs all over the floors; I mean YUK! SunTanCity on Oleander Drive in Wilmington seems to think my minor child has contractual capacity and can be forced to allow an automatic draft from her bank account on March 1 for a spray tan schedule she did not understand, agreed to on Feb. 21st, 2020 and attempted to cancel today, Feb. 23rd. At no point did her father or I sign anything allowing her to have a spray tan in the first place--let alone contract for an automatic payment schedule. The young woman I spoke with on the phone told me that this was her company's corporate policy in NC governing spray tanning and that my daughter would have to pay this because she signed up for it. There's a blank--unsigned--parent signature block on the form. Oh, boy. Do I really have to get legal representation over this? Note: Later on Feb. 23 I was able to receive help from an awesome employee named Alana in the KY corporate office of SunTanCity. She cancelled and closed the membership for my daughter and was very professional and helpful. She verified that there were zero parental signatures on file authorizing my daughter to receive tanning services or commit to memberships. read more

All I have wanted was to be tan! Sun Tan City in Wilmington has delivered. I have been going for almost a month. Everyone that works at this location are very knowledgeable and deliver the best customer service, greeting you by name when you walk in the door, and asking how it was when you leave the tanning booth. The girls , especially Sara are amazing . Sara gave me so many tips on how to get my darkest, I have been tanning for years and this is by far the best color I have ever been. Sara also explained all the lotions and what would work best for skin tone. I never realized how important lotion was to obtain a tan and keep it. I have tanned all over Wilmington, until Sun Tan City opened up back in 2013. I enjoy the different level of beds offered, and flexibility if using the different levels, even with a set membership. I've been a tanner for a long time and decided to give spray tanning a try. I was hesitant, mostly because I was afraid I'd mess up and pull a Ross (Friends reference), but the process was thoroughly discussed before entering the room, as well as through the machine while spraying, even had the instructions in the wall (to be certain you are standing correctly). The salon is always clean, and the staff is very friendly. Products are top of the line, and I have always had great color from using their lotions and their beds. Really can't beat their location and hours because you can visit early morning and late into the evening. read more

Hmmm.... let's see where do I begin? I have been a loyal customer of suntan city for almost 10 years with a monthly membership for which payment is deducted from my bank account every month. I normally go to suntan city in Louisville where I am from and everyone is so customer service oriented and friendly at any one of the 6 different locations I frequent. When I visited the Wilmington location and ask for a half price spray tan (weekend special), I received looks like I was crazy and was told I needed a membership for that. I stated I have a membership and have for 10 years, 2 people looked on the computer and told me I didn't. I said they needed to look it into it because I mostly certainly do. I was informed that they emailed customer service and I could have a seat because they were just waiting to hear back. Twenty minutes passed before I was told that I could proceed as they were able to confirm under membership. There has to be a better way to resolve this, and I get that customers aren't always correct but in this case I was so I do not appreciate being treated as if I had no clue what I was talking about. Customer service training is desperately needed as well as just some training on general processes. This is the 2nd bad experience I had at this location so I felt the need to share because it's not just an off day. read more

You'll get an automated service ...but if you wait on hold for someone you will be connected to someone that works out of their home and answers general questions for the company. Don't even waste your time. I had no other option but to come here for my spray tan this past week and for the 3rd time it was awful. Took the 2 employees (a manager and an associate) 20 minutes to help 2 people that were in there before I even got in there. I told them I needed a spray tan and we agreed on a clear / level 3 tan or something of the sort. I have a lady that normally does my spray tans and they come out perfect and I pay $25. She wasn't able to do it, thus I had to pay $45 for this spray from Sun Tan City. I must've told them 5 times I ONLY wanted the spray tan, regardless of their incessant pushing and nagging for me to just buy the primer and the post-moisturizing. I said no, I'm already $20 over what I normally pay and then the manager told me he'd just include it in the price so I may as well take them. They told me to have a seat and they were preparing the booth for me. I sat and waited for 25 minutes and each time I asked they said it was almost ready and then finally told me there had been someone in front of me and that they only had 1 of like the 6 booths open for whatever reason. So 25 minutes of waiting then they finally ask me to come to the counter and ask me "which tan" I had selected. I was like ???? didn't we already do this? So I got in the booth and there was no barrier cream in there, so I just used my "included" primer especially on my hands and feet. The manager said the tan would develop in 4-6 hours and about 9 hours later I still had noticed no difference so I knew, even in the morning, I still wouldn't be very dark. Well it's now been 4 days and my hands are multicolored orange and all the rest of the tan has completely faded. I'd like to note that I "rinsed" 24 hours post-spray, moisturized, and didn't shave for days. I know how to properly maintain a spray tan. Anyway, I'm completely back to being my normal complexion, but have orange hands. Guess 3rd times a charm, I'd rather just stay pale than come here in a crunched schedule. Worst customer service ever. They tell you things that aren't true when you sign up for a membership then when you call about charges to your account they tell you that you signed it in the contract. I have been going there since they opened, but recently they have hired new staff and I have never been treated so rudely by more than one staff persons. My sister and her daughter were also treated this way so it is obviously not just me. I am canceling my membership and would go back only if they rehire several new staff and managers. This is the absolute WORST tanning salon I've ever been to. I purchased a package called "Tour of the City" and was suppose to get to tan in all levels of their sunbeds. I had planned to go in order but when I got up to the fastest and instant sunbed, I was told I had already laid in those. After arguing with a couple different girls, I finally got to finish up my package which also included a free spray tan. I went in for it and was told my package had expired. I was never informed that it would it expire and, not to mention, I had just bought the package a little over a week prior. All the employees are rude and are just trying to make commission off their customers. They do not care at all about your experience.
