Sadly we had to take our yellow lab mix in for her final visit.This was our first visit to Sun Valley as we just moved to Monroe. The staff was very careful with her as she had been in a lot of pain. They explained the procedure and the doctor (Borell?) took great care in making sure she was comfortable and as pain free as possible. I find it comprehensible that two veterinarians conferred over my 2 year old Mini Australian Shepard and could not determine the skin issue she presented., After paying $670 for tests and a heart worm pill, along with minoxidil foam, we left with no definitive answer or real treatment. Our local groomer, Dandelion Paws, in Marshville asked me to describe the issue. She called me back within 5 minutes stating Quinn likely has "hotspots". Hotspots are very common for dogs and should have an antibiotic. When I called Sun Valley Animal, they refused to prescribe an antibiotic. Don't waste your money at Sun Valley Animal Hospital. I plan to use Brown Creek Animal in Polkton, NC. They are friendly and very reasonable, according to several people I've spoken with. read more

I took my cat Mamma to the vet as she had a growth above her eye. She is 16 years old. Strictly an indoor cat never outside. The vet and tech seemed nice but the pricing was way off. I did not want the Vaccine but I had to get it $65.00. They did drain the growth $20 and I thought I was getting the bare minimum blood work but they did a complete $201.00 then the exam was $90 a total of 423. 15. I've been taking all of my dogs to Sun Valley over the years and they've always done right by us. They are compassionate when I've had to put three dogs down in one year because of cancer and old age, they've helped me nurse back to life a parvo puppy that was at death's door, and they've been fairly priced and get us in quick when we need to be seen on short notice. Vets and pets are expensive, but this vet is reasonably priced and they walk through your options for treatment/preventative care so you can decide. read more

This was my 1st visit with my two fur babies. Online appointment scheduling is easy. Love the Saturday hours! The front desk person and vet were both very friendly and personable (5 stars). Vet was very knowledgeable about my babies. So those are the positives. However, the pricing is not transparent. I was given a set of pricing on the phone that was off by $140 when I actually went in person. Normal physical / wellness exam is not done in the room with you. Also blood work is not included and is an extra $70 (not included in wellness exam fee). Even with all of that, if the price was justified with the service or a nice fancy building or something, I would give a chance and plan to return. BUT, the assistant assigned to my room was the worst! I am sorry but not friendly and as soon as we were in the room she was was adding the total and telling me the visit was over $700! SMH. Then when I asked for the pricing breakdown because it did not match what I was given, she asks did I write it down and what prices were I given? That is a read flag to me. Prices should not change. So overall, it was okay. So staff are great, others suck. They have great hours but are overpriced (About $415 for 2 wellness exams). So up to you as to what matters most. I am but on customer service and having the exam doing in front of me, as that is my personal preference. read more

I have a rescue dog, that was born in the wild, we saw the litter and mama dog once, we tried to collect them up but they ran off. A few days later we heard crying from under our car hauler in the middle of the night, this tiny puppy wouldn't come to us and we were very careful not to let our Akitas run loose, scared of what they may do to her. Now almost 2 years later she is still very skittish. So, we made the appointment and got up early to start working on getting her into a kennel for transport at 11am we gave her some Benadryl to calm her nerves and then it took us until 12:45 to be able to get her into the kennel. We immediately left for the vet and it took an hour and 10 minutes to get there; when we arrived, we had to carry the kennel into the office with her in it so that she didn't freak out and run into the busy street. It was an ordeal to say the least. Whenwhen the Vet came into the room to see her she told us that we needed to wait in the waiting room so that they could do their thing, we went into the waiting room and a few minutes later they called us back in and said that she had peed on the ground and they didn't want to risk touching her because she had growled at them. I asked if she could be sedated and was told, "No, they didn't have time" also we'd have to bring her back another day. Our entire office time 7 minutes?! All that time and energy wasted when they knew up front how temperamental she was. We went through so much. They lacked compassion, in every way. They used to have a great Vet there he was so good with our Akitas, treated them like puppies so they acted like puppies. When my husky was hit by a car the team of people from the Vet in Muncie Indiana didn't worry that they got bit due to her being in pain they did what they needed to to save her life. This was very upsetting. We could have held her so that they could have done what they needed to but they didn't let us or give us the option. We won't be returning to Sun Valley Animal Hospital again. If I could have rated them a zero today I would have. If they don't get a Vet in there that has the ability to empathize... there 3 stars will drop to a one star overall rating. read more

Worst vet I have EVER gone to in my life. They sent me away because I didn't want to have a vaccine done. My old vet saw me same day and helped my cats without shoving some shot down my throat. Absolutely unprofessional staff as well. I left a negative review on facebook and they BLOCKED me so people can't read it. Absolute clown behavior I cant believe this place is allowed to open their doors. A joke to the community. read more

Stay away from this place, my cat got sick several times and they always failed giving us diagnosis of what was wrong with him, the last time we took him to get checked what appeared to be an eye infection they told us they were unsure of what caused it and gave us antibiotics and pain killers, he never got better, he suffered for a whole week and never checked on us to see how he was doing, it turned out he had cancer spreading all over his body, including behind his eye ball (that's why his eye was popping out of his face) we took him there for probably 6 years and they never investigated anything in depth, we had to put him down today due to the terminal tumors and we had no idea he was probably sick for a long time and suffering I'm just mad and want justice for him read more

Was a customer for 23 years. Customer service has gone down after Dr. Hudson retired. After having problems with my last 4 visits the time has come to make a move. I have tried to address the poor customer service to the doctors and other staff. You only need to read the reviews here and on other sites to see this is their new normal. I was told they are too busy today by a staff member, hopefully this will help them having less customers. read more

I see several negative reviews on here. We've been taking our 2 Boston's and a mix breed to Dr's Barker & Dr Rios for about 6 years. Great staff, great Dr's. SVAH has been around for years. Compared to other Vets in the area we think their prices are fair. One review complains about the traffic. Which they (SVAH) can not control. read more

We have been taking our cats to Sun Valley Animal Hospital since the early 90's. Dr. Barker is an exceptional vet. He examines our cats thoroughly at each appointment and carefully explains any findings. Several years ago, my cat was weaving a bit when she walked, and he examined her thoroughly. In fact, I wish my own doctor was as thorough! He is very compassionate as is the staff. Highly recommend. I hope he never retires. read more

I followed up and was told they could only see my dog Monday, but no worries, my earlier message was taken and someone will be calling me back soon. It's now Saturday and they're closed. No one called me back. Thanks for your care. Oh my dog, was sick with loose bowel movement, throw up and blood in the stool. Maybe I have it wrong. AWFUL! New to the area, we took our 14 year old dog there for tests that are normally $250 and they were going to charge us $600. They were also charging over $100/mo for the medicine that we get for around $55/mo EVERYWHERE ELSE. Their response "We dont price match." This place was trying to take us for a ride! Managed to get our dog back (after dropping her off for the tests BEFORE they quoted a price) for only $50. What did we get for our $50 you might ask? The tech looked in my dog's ears and "felt" her... for $50!!! What a crock! We are taking our business to Indian Trail Animal Hospital. read more

New to the area, I reached out and got some good feedback for Dr. Barker at SVAH. We love our vets but the commute down Old Monroe can take too long, especially when we are in an urgent way with out older dog who has seizures and other issues. I booked an appointment with Dr. Barker specifically. Upon arrival, the receptionist apologized and informed me he took another patient and asked if I would mind seeing Dr. Rios. I agreed to see her and then to some upset bloodwork which was as unhelpful and as it was costly. Dr. rios treated us like customers, spoke as if our other vets at Matthews Animal Clinic were not sound on the rx which they had prescribed for the past 3 years...As if it made no senses at all to treat seizures with Gabapentin. I googled to when I got home to find THAT it is commonly prescribed for seizures. So she sold us on the blood work, asserted that our vets could have done better and just overall it did not feel like the type care of care I wanted for my dog. She wanted to start my dog on a new RX. Because I didn't feel great about her and this is a serious consideration, I called to see if I could consult with Dr. Barker about RX change, I was told, that I would need to come back for another visit. They have all of our vet records and Dr. Rios saw him a few weeks ago. They actually called to say I was welcome to come back for a visit and pay for it...just so I could discuss the RX and statements of Dr. Rios. I love and swear by the people at Mattews animal clinic and just wanted a closer option. I cannot consider SUN VALLEY ANIMAL HOSPITAL a good option for my animals. Apparently the generous offer to let me come back and see the vet I had my appointment booked with was the owner, Dr. Hudson's idea. I am angry with myself for not listening to my gut. No wonder they are sending out coupons for free first visit for customer acquisition. I wished I had just had the complimentary visit, not done the bloodwork and claws and left with my money and gut instinct-- that they are running a business more than an animal care facility. I am sharing my experience only. If you have had better ones, I am glad for you. Shaking my head. Waste of time and money. My pets deserve better, more mindful and wholesome care than this. read more

Prices are extremely high, service is sub par, took my rescue dog here and not sure if they even noticed the dog just saw dollar signs floating around as we walked thru the door. I absolutely love this Animal Hospital.... We personally request Dr, Barker when we make our appointments. Dr. Barker is one of the most compassionate Vetrinarians we have ever met. There is never a rush to get you in and out, if you have questions Dr. Barker will take all the time you need to get your questions answered. The staff is also awesome. It's just a great place to take your pet, Sometimes the out come is not what you want to hear, but they are honest and compassionate when it comes to your pet. All of the staff and vets are very friendly, don't rush my visits, help to mitigate my concerns, and follow up if my dogs are sick or require additional care. I made an appt today for my senior dog Jack at Sun Valley animal hospital. He was very sick and his vet could not see him today. They were able to get me an appt the same day. They were wonderful. I can only echo the complimentary sentiments already expressed here. The staff of Sun Valley Animal Hospital are an outstanding group of individuals. I have seen, at one time or another, all the doctors for either my dogs or cats throughout the last several years. They have all been compassionate, unhurried, and thorough. The support staff are friendly and caring. Dr. Christenbury usually sees our Standard Poodle, Jackson, and she is extraordinary. Their prices are reasonable. As a matter of fact, I switched to this practice over the exorbitant price my previous practice in Weddington was going to charge me for cleaning my dog's teeth. Other teachers at my school recommended Sun Valley for their level of care and more reasonable prices. I actually receive better care and service than I previously had! I have never been happier with a veterinary practice. read more

My husband has been using SVAH for years. We have been married 2/12 years now and have 7 dogs together. They are always helpful and very friendly. I transferred my dogs from another local vet to SVAH and have appreciated the more personal care that they get there. Today, I recommended my daughter take her dog there after 3 trips to another local vet for an infected dew claw. I am sure she will get the care and attention she needs there instead of repeat visits elsewhere. read more

I took my cat here for two visits, and I really liked the veterinarian. It turned out after visits,tests, a pain shot and antibiotics (about $250 in two visits) that the cat just needs to eat some special prescription cat food for about $50 a month for the REST OF HER LIFE--Yike$. Fortunately, the cat didn't like this food, and I found some non-prescription pet store cat food to help the cat with urinary tract problems. I also found an online vet website helpful which suggested adding a little vinegar to the cat's food. I've talked to others who paid more to find out the same problems, so I can't blame the Sun Valley. I would take my cat here again, but in this particular case, I clearly wish that I had done a google search and tried my own fix first. This was a clean, cheerful business though. It also has a good reputation too. I would ask about prices first if you are on a budget though. read more

Top notch and only the very BEST for my pups is why we chose SVAH. Unsure why there are any negative reviews. Prices, by far, are comparable to other vets in area. Dr. Barker is kind, compassionate, loving with the animals and easy to talk to about what he recommends for our pets. He has gone above and beyond in the care and treatment of our pets, including our senior Pug who passed naturally at 15 and a miniature Boston who had a blood cancer that he researched on his own time to find the best short term treatment options available to give us more time with her and a personal telephone call after she passed in her sleep. We have two new additions, a Boston and a Golden, and I have the utmost trust and confidence in his treatment for both of them, I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Barker. And on Dr. Rios, who is fairly new to SVAH, my daughter who lives out of town takes her French Bulldog and absolutely loves Dr. Rios. Following a recent visit with her, Dr. Rios made two follow up calls to my daughter to check on her pup, asked for pics to see progress and made appt. for her next return. Dr. Barker or Dr. Rios do not rush you in and out, they are calming and the atmosphere is gentle, but also fun for my golden who likes to play. Neither Dr. Barker nor Dr. Rios make recommendations that are not warranted. I highly recommend Sun Valley Animal Hospital and have no regrets in any of the care of my pets, simply put, it is above and beyond the very BEST ! ! I've been taking my dogs there for the past 9 years up until this past week. Made an appointment for two dogs for possible ear infections, ended up no infection but my bill was 288.00. Feel like I was ripped off. Charging regular customers 55.00 per pet for a visit on top off all other extra fees. Took my pets to another vet same week and my dog did have an ear infection after all. Sun Valley wanted to charge me 56.00 for this skin medicine for my pet and the other vet charged me 36.00 for the same meds. My office visits now are 35.00. Much more affordable. So happy I changed over. Sun Valley your fees are over the top expensive for the area you do business in. read more

I have taken all 3 of my pets (2 dogs and 1 cat) to Sun Valley. I have seen a few of the doctors but my favorite is Dr. Barker. He is very thorough when he examines my pets, he is very patient and he explains everything. Last year by 8 year old golden stopped walking and behaved like he was in a great deal of pain, Dr. Barker examined him and found that he had a pulled back muscle and merely needed time. The bill was very reasonable, in fact I was surprised it wasn't more! All my pets get their annual check-ups and the prices are in line, if not lower than other vets I have been to in the Charlotte area. I can tell the staff really cares for the pets and pet owners. I will continue to take my pets to Sun Valley, and especially to Dr. Barker! read more
