I took my 8 lb Shih Tzu to Veg ER after he started vomiting frequently and having bloody diarrhea. They looked at him right away. He was severely dehydrated and was starting to show signs of shock. I am so grateful for the care this emergency vet gave my cat, Mango. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring. It was clear they truly cared about Mango and his comfort, not just treating him as another case. The facility was very clean and calm, which helped during such a stressful time. Mango was given a comfortable bed in his cage and everything possible was done to keep him as comfortable as he could be. The team was also very efficient while still taking the time to communicate and reassure us. My dog was throwing up a lot of saliva so I took him to be seen at Banisfield his X-rays were taken ($345) and blood test for possible infection ($367) but because they couldn't see what it was (unbelievable) we had to go to a more specialized hospital type get further help. I took him to VEG ER Hospital for pets. The staff is very knowledgeable and provide top tier in caring for my pet.They couldn't tell exactly what he swallowed but it was small and they could keep him overnight to observe for $1200 I said I can do that at home. I was charged $31 for pills to stop diarrhea in which he did not suffer from. I was also given 4 cans of dog food for diarrhea. I took my dog and prayed that he pooped whatever he swallowed and he is fine now. However, I did witness several emergency situations and saw that the staff is highly skilled! read more

I was visiting my mom in Charlotte when my 14 year old dog started to experience breathing problems. I took him to VEG and they diagnosed him with pneumonia. Unfortunately after 24 hours of hospitalization, I had to make the hard to choice of putting him to sleep. Every single person working at VEG was so kind and always made a point to engage with em and tell me how much they enjoyed their time with him. I know his last 24 hours hours were full of love and compassion, even when I couldn't be there. Nothing prepares you for a moment like putting your dog to sleep but it's even worse when you don't expect it. The staff of all women were very accommodating and knowledgeable. They have an open floor triage area and individual rooms if you and your pet need it. They were friendly to our pit bull and played with her to get her to relax and become comfortable. We called before we came and told them what was going on. They took our information over the phone and were ready when we arrived. It was late at night when we brought our pet in. They took her immediately and began a routine examination to determine what was causing her distress. We got some of the answers we needed and will follow up with our vet in the morning but when we left our pet was fine and they gave us instructions on how to move forward. They will run test after test, rack up a massive bill, and send you home with no answers, and in the worst case, cost your pet its life. Do not bring your animal here. Read the two stories below and decide for yourself. Oliver's Story A dear friend of mine had a black lab named Oliver who began getting very sick. My friend brought Oliver to VEG on a Tuesday morning, where they kept him overnight Tuesday and Wednesday running test after test. On Thursday morning, my friend pulled Oliver from VEG's care, with an $8,000 bill and no real answers, and immediately brought him to Carolina Veterinary Specialists (CVS). CVS diagnosed Oliver right away with pancreatitis and immediately began working on him, but expressed serious concern that VEG had cost them too much time given how rapidly Oliver's condition had deteriorated. Tragically, Oliver passed away Sunday morning. He was only five years old -- practically still a puppy -- and may have had a real fighting chance had VEG done their job from the start. Rex's Story My own dog, Rex, began having stomach problems and was seen by our regular vet, who identified a foreign body in his large intestine on X-ray and recommended we go to VEG if he couldn't pass it on his own. He couldn't, so we went. Despite X-rays taken only seven hours earlier clearly showing the foreign body, VEG claimed they could not find it. Rather than act, they kept Rex overnight running test after test -- ultimately charging us over $10,000 while telling us repeatedly that they couldn't find anything and couldn't help. We pulled Rex and took him to CARE, who immediately saw the foreign body, scheduled surgery for the following morning, and successfully removed it. Rex is okay -- no thanks to VEG. Two pets. Two visits to VEG. Two enormous bills for nothing. Two families forced to leave and find real help elsewhere. If your pet is having an emergency in Charlotte, please consider Charlotte Animal Referral and Emergency (CARE) or Carolina Veterinary Specialists (CVS) instead -- both are significantly better options. I was seriously impressed from the moment I walked in. Its 24/7/365 and open floor was monumental to easing our minds, and you get to be with your pet every step, they even can set up a room for you to stay overnight. All the 20+ people from the receptionist to the vet we came in contact with were awesome and answered my many questions with no qualms. So I wanted to wait to write this review but you have a ER emergency and a looking quick for a place to take your large dog for bloat, go elsewhere. So my husband is dying from cancer and as it happens, everything goes wrong when you're already stressed. My dog for some reason when he came home to say goodbye. Rolled on the floor and started to show signs of bloat. I looked to see what was open on a Saturday night leave and found this place.Called them and headed over. Headed in and the first thing they did was weigh min, 100 pounds maybe a little less. So then they tell me to wait and they will send me a quote to look at him 1210.00 just to look at him with x-rays and ultra sound, of that i am not even sure. 20 minutes later they say we thing you are correct he has something going on in abdominal area and they send off for someone else to look at his images. Then they come and say they are working up how much it would cost. 8,000.00 - 10,000.00 and of course his spleen looks big so there are tour things that many add to it. Do you want to do it? If you don;t your dog is going to die. Of course you can go down the road but then you will have to pay to have him looked at again they tell me. They will not touch a pet in severe pain until you can pay for it.I said 10K ? I don't have that kind of money.they say we can get you together with care loan people, here sit with your dog and let us know. They leave him there crying in pain and with that kind of cost, I had to put him down. They charged me another almost 700.00 to do that and then waited me to purchase all this stuff like boxes and ashes. I just felt that this company is all about robbing the poor pet parent and not about helping a poor animal who is sick and dying. I not only did not know what to do but then they tell me to go make calls, like go get money. I wish I had picked a different place because all they wanted is big cash or kill my dog, which they did and then charged me 2K to do it. Please beware. If they had worked with me for a reasonable amount and they were sitting there doing nothing but grunting behind me, they could have make 5K and save a life. I have been blessed with pets for most of the four decades I have lived here. As such I have been to multiple emergency animal hospitals in the area. I've had good experiences at most and great experiences at a few. VEG blew them away, hands down. Firstly, their intake procedure is very quick because they assume people want to get their pets treated ASAP. Secondly, they took us back to a large examination room where everything was done. No taking my dog away to draw blood. I got to stay with her - and she has separation anxiety - the whole time. I was also allowed to help as much as I wanted. Which was a lot. My dog is my registered Emotional Support Animal so me staying with her was extremely important. And let me tell you, Dr. Boyer and vet techs Ray and Amber were angels. So compassionate, so gentle with my dog, and so understanding of my emotional state. I cannot recommend these people highly enough. They're brilliant. I came here on a Sunday afternoon with my dog who ate a corn cob I chose them after I called around to a number of places in north Charlotte and everyone was slammed and another place recommended them. The staff were sooo nice upon entering. I have a reactive dog who doesn't do great in stressful situations or around other dogs. There isn't really a dedicated private space upon entering if you have a reactive dog. So if you're like us beware... upon telling them about her reactivity they let us stay in our car and did check in with us outside to minimize her stress which I so appreciated! For it being a Sunday afternoon I think they got to us as fast as they could being that it was a a time sensitive issue. I was out in about 2 hours and they quickly induced vomiting to prevent the obstruction. When leaving they helped me navigate my reactive dog out the back door so it wouldn't stress anyone out. I cannot express enough gratitude to this team. My dog got bitten by another dog and required 13 stitches. It truly was one of the worst days of my life, my dog is my whole world. This is a long review of a two day visit here. On Saturday morning, I woke up to a foamy wet mess that was apparently vomit from one of my cats. I have two cats and couldn't tell which one it came from. a little while later, my cat Rory was sitting on the floor with another puddle underneath him so knew it came from him. I called VEG since my vet was closed for the weekend. The vet strongly recommended that I bring Rory in and I agreed and left my home with him immediately. When I arrived, I guess wires were crossed, because I was told by a nurse that I had to wait because they heard Rory might be contagious since fluid was coming from his nose. This was not what I explained on the phone. I was able to convince the nurse that it was vomit and was admitted to an examining room. Dr Juan did a preliminary exam and he recommended an X-ray to see what was causing the nausea. After the x ray, an object was found in his intestines. Since it seemed to be on a path where it could pass to his colon, the vet and radiologist recommended that Rory and I go home and return the next day to see if any movement had occurred and he would pass the object naturally. Dr. Juan felt there was a good chance he could. The next day, Sunday, I brought him back and the object made a move in the wrong direction and there was an obstruction and inflammation on the stomach. Rory needed emergency surgery and VEG's estimate was very high, but i was reluctant to take him to an open regular vet for surgery since this was an emergency. Andy, the hospital manager sat with me and patiently helped me find payment options. Two family members wanted to help me with the financial part and agreed to help with the bill. They lived out of town and it took a while for them due to some unexpected issues on their end. Since it took a while to get the funding worked out and a mishap of the family member having tech issues entering the information on the link we had to think of another way to get the money sent to me. We agreed on another method but the family member was travelling in the DC area, and they were having trouble making the payment from the link Andy sent them from the car. After a while, Andy became rude and confronted me about the payments, said that the times I had promised the money kept changing and asked what was taking so long. He also asked since he knew they were traveling if they could just pull off the road to send the money. I offered to have him call them just to make him feel more comfortable that the money was coming through. Andy told me that the medical team was getting nervous that I hadn't paid for the surgery yet. (I was on the phone repeatedly with the family members and they were doing their very best to send the money).I was told that surgery would still happen, but he seemed skeptical that I had the money to pay for it. Finally half of the money came in and the other half was on its way, but I was required to pay something to close out the case (I'm guessing kind of like a down payment) until the money came through, I had also already paid my money for the second Xray and wasn't going anywhere because I was honestly going to pay. I had already paid a total of $1000 for Saturday's visit, the money for the second x ray and the $1300 to close out the case on top of what the surgery cost. Since I paid to close out, I was able to go home and check on my other cat and wait to hear from the vet who did the surgery. It was a very embarrassing, and humiliating experience for me. I understand that they are a business and they needed their money and I was trying very hard to take care of it. Sometimes I think a person's feelings need to be taken into account too. I was happy with the vets Dr Prevolet, Dr. Kumar, and Dr, Gallon. They were very kind and compassionate as well as the nurses who patiently talked to me, encouraged me and updated me on Rory each time I called. I was able to visit Rory that night after the surgery and it was determined that he wasn't ready to go home then, but would be the next morning before I had to go to school. The next morning Dr. Kumar called and told me that Rory was better, but she preferred that he stay with them longer to make sure he was pain med free and ate. I agreed and it was arranged that I could pick him up that afternoon after work at no extra charge which was very kind and appreciated. When I arrived that afternoon I got his discharge papers and was able to talk to Dr. Gallon before I took him home. This emergency hospital is very close to my home and I have used it several times, but I'm not sure I will be using it again after the way I was treated over the length of time it took to arrange the payments with my family members. I assured them many times that we were working it out and I would be paying the money, it was just taking a while to coordinate everything. We knew about Veterinary Emergency Group as we had to take our dog Rocky to VEG in Fort Worth, TX for an unexpected emergency and had a great experience. Unfortunately, Rocky had another unexpected emergency on a Friday afternoon when his regular vet was already closed. The closest emergency vet to us was on a two hour wait, so we decided to make the haul to the South Park area to visit this VEG. What I love about VEG is the staff is so friendly, listened to our concerns, and gave us a couple different treatment options without being forceful with either option. The options for us were the trial route with medication or pricy route with scans to figure exactly what is going on. Both times we went the trial route and both times Rocky's issues improved. One other thing I wanted to point out that I love is that you are with your pet as they complete their examination. Some emergency vets that we have gone to they take the information and take them to another room for examination. Lastly, I found their prices to be reasonable or what you would expect for going to an emergency vet. Definitely recommend VEG if you find yourself in need of an emergency vet. read more

This place treated my dog with so much care. I walked in and it was so clean the staff was friendly it was calming for me being there for an emergency with my dog. Of course it's always pricey to take your dog to the emergency room but they had payment options available if you couldn't pay the full amount right away. They also were fast. I was able to get X-rays she had to sit and wait for maybe 20 min and then they gave us meds and my pup was out. It was a good atmosphere for a stressful situation. read more

I've dealt with a few other emergency vet visits and must say that VEG was uniquely different. After coming home to my senior dog in a lot of pain, I had to call multiple vets and many of them either couldn't take him in or had excessive wait times. VEG was able to take him in and even sent me the intake form to fill out before I arrived. The staff was absolutely amazing. They saw the urgent need of my pet and were quick to come help him. They were also very empathetic and easy to talk to. Additionally, this was the first vet experience I've had where they let you come into the back area. I was glad I got to stay close to my boy most of the time (with the exception of tests and xrays). Unfortunately, we ended up making the decision to euthanize. The vet spent a lot of time discussing the options with me to help me make an informed decision. They were also very patient with me, sensitive, and supportive. Even though the situation was a nightmare for me, I can't imagine having a more supportive staff to help me through. Vets have one of the hardest and mentally draining jobs out there so I want to make sure this team knows how much they are appreciated. read more

Hopefully, you never have to go to the vet's ER. But if you do, this is an excellent service. They are very different in how they handle pet emergencies. You never wait; you walk right in like an ER for people and get triaged immediately. The check-in process can be done ahead of time on your phone, and the main ER is open, so you stay with your pet the entire time; this actually works well for me because I hate when vets take the pet into closed areas and I can't see how they treat them. This was very transparent in the care and testing; they were quick and caring. It is always scary to have a pet emergency, but I am glad I live close to this location because my senior cat has been to this location twice. It has been a good experience, considering it's something you hope never happens. read more

They are expensive, apparently more so than other emergency vets in the area, but I believe it's because they allow you to go back with your pet into the treatment area. Personally, I really like that, as it enabled me to be with my beloved cat for as long as possible before he had to be euthanized. The staff were very caring and understanding. No matter where you go, an emergency vet is going to be expensive. But, if you're like me, and your pets are family, it adds to the stress when you take them to an emergency vet and they take your animal away and you don't get to see them. I prefer this model of veterinary emergency care. Just be prepared, they did minimal treatment on my cat, and I did choose to get him cremated and have a separate urn with his name on it, but the total came to around $900. This veterinary's office was kinda cool not going to lie. I felt like I was in an episode of Grey's Anatomy but for pets. There is an open concept to the office. I was able to watch them take my dogs vitals while someone else looked at a sick cat at the table next to me. They sat down on the ground with my dog. Although any emergency visit is going to be expensive this one was actually a little cheaper than the initial emergency hospital I was going to go to. All of the check in and payments were all completed through a link sent via text. So if you aren't tech savvy you may not find this as cool. But the visit was quick. My dog is resting well after some fluids and a pain relief shot. I hope that I don't have to do this too many more times but I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone who has to. read more

I took in a 4 month old puppy and called myself being a responsible pet owner. Took him to get groomed. the groomed said something is not right w your dog, so I made an immediate appt w pet smart and he had a severe worm infestation and blood count was fately low. Thid now explained why he slept and was so weak and collapsing. I called around several places and I felt so at ease w VEG. When I took Snickers in they let us stay w him the whole time. The staff was professional, compassionate and knowledgable. Updating us at every chance. Went in at 11 pm and Snickers was ready to go by 7am. They us a high and low estimate and explained why and in the end it was lower than the low estimate, which made the experience even better. I love the staff there for saving Snickers. I had only had this puppy 5 days when this all happened. They assured my mind that was going on before I got him. I can't thank them enough. They processed my bill a little later too, to allow my neighbors to donate. read more

After wasting 3.5 hours and learning nothing about what is going on with our dog, they charge us $1,000. Tomorrow I'll take my dog to a real Vet. Unfortunately, we had to put our cat down after he was apparently struck by a vehicle. He snuck out on Easter Sunday and Monday morning / Monday afternoon We found him basically paralyzed in the backyard. Some of the staff but especially the front desk are always helpful and empathetic ( as this is the third time I have used them,) but I have to say I absolutely feel like they take advantage of ppl financially- after looking at the bills that don't make sense or add up ( he was there for 28 hrs and my bill was $3,600.00 Yepppp ) !! And he didn't survive; I had an accountant look at it this morning and she said I need to call the BBB. . Now i need to call them for the billing records from my last two visits which were also high but i just wanted to save my babies. I know they are in a high end area, so they are absolutely charging high end prices! I saw on another review they offered payment plans, but they did not offer anything like that to us. They just took our money and charged us to euthanize the cat after all of the services that we racked up. Line by line none of the daily or hourly charges are the same and then there's all these miscellaneous charges that equal $500? Unfortunately, at this point, I'm gonna have to report them to the BBB I've never done that before nor did I do it with the first two cats, but this bill was just ridiculous and looks unprofessional. Times are tough and i dont think thats a concern for them. I mean, if you have unlimited funds, then by all means go for it. I found a bill from another emergency vet in Cottswald and they were much more reasonable. Ill know better for next time. Our 12-year-old German Shepherd has always been a lot to handle. On last Sunday morning he was in distress, vomiting foam and whining in pain. My husband and I dragged him off the back porch and into my car on a sheet. The care and immediate attention (it looked like the entire staff ran out when we got there) we received was unbelievable. X-rays showed gastric torsion with which I am familiar, and solutions were kindly offered and with consideration given to all options. If a procedure is needed you obviously can't be in the room...BUT they have a window so you can be as close as possible. All of the staff were professional and patient. They were ready for me when I came bc I called ahead and let them know I was coming. They were very reasonable and I didn't feel pressured at all to do any interventions that I didn't feel my dog needed. My dog swallowed a slim Jim and it's wrapper last week and he's been vomiting intermittently since. I wanted him to get checked out just to make sure he was okay and Dr. Navarez was awesome. He assessed my dog and told me that he looked great and I agreed. He still gave me the option of doing an X-ray and told me all of the possible outcomes with or without it. We both decided that my dog was well appearing enough to hold off at this time since it may not change anything treatment wise anyways. He gave me a few other options of things we could do while we were there and allowed me to choose what I felt my dog needed and gave me a breakdown of how much everything was going to cost before doing anything! Everyone of the other staff we interacted with were helpful and kind the whole time as well. They were very quick, I was in and out in 40 mins. It is an ER so obviously time just depends on how busy they are, but the staff wasn't wasting time at all! What a great place. I came in forgot my phone at home. Had to euthanize my kitten but I have never found a emergency clinic that was so caring. Between front desk to doctors and staff. Thank you for making my hard decision with grace and compassion. I left my phone at home since I had to Uber there as my car was broken and they sent me home. If any of my other pets are ever in a emergency state this is worth the drive from Ballantyne. I give this emergency vet a 10 but 5 is the most I can do. I called VEG at 2:30 in the morning after my sweet golden doodle Finn had an unexpected seizure. It was terrifying and I had no idea what to do. I was on the phone with a doctor within moments and she did a great job walking me through it. Early the next morning we brought him in to be checked out and received amazing care. We were seen immediately and had numerous people helping us throughout the appointment. I have been to other emergency vets and waited LONG periods of time with no communication. This was the opposite experience. Special thanks to Nurse Megan, to Katie and to Dr. Madison Sites who provided care to Finn. We have now been to this clinic three times (once for a bad respiratory infection and twice for seizures) and I have always left there feeling like my dog is getting the best possible emergency care. I have NEVER been to an emergency vet like VEG. I called ahead of time and they got me checked in. Arrived about 10 minutes later and was seen immediately, and they already acknowledged both me and my pets name. The location is open concept, so you are able to stay with your pet at all times, which is great for my nervous dog. They walked me through everything they were going to do and gave me a quote before moving forward. They even let me watch my dog get her x-rays! Meghan was the main tech that I dealt with and she was so amazing. She was not only thorough but sat with my dog and I, petting her, making her comfortable, and talking to me to help get my mind off of my sick pup. She even packed a little doggie bag with her meds and a few treats with a sweet note. Dr. Haun walked me through her blood work, showed me x-rays, and explained everything in great detail. When we visited again the next day for a follow-up, everyone remembered my dog and was so sweet to her. She can be nervous around new people but when we returned, she was nothing but tail wags and happy to receive pats. Each and every staff member I spoke to was incredibly kind and welcoming. I'd hate to say I wish to go again on behalf of my pets health but I know if I need to, she will be in the best care! read more

This place is AMAZING. Our dog was in heart failure and was working heart to breath. When I arrived, they took her immediately, were very upfront, and gave me every option. Needless to say, it would have been selfish to put here through something she would probably not survive at 15. A year it will be April 1st when we had to say goodbye. My only issue was I was told she was going to be hand delivered to my home. She arrived off the UPS truck. I would have gone and picked her ashes had i been told she was going to be shipped. If she had gotten lost, which could happen, my daughter, who grew up with her, would have been even more lost than she already is. Most important is that she made it back to us, and the staff in the back are amazing! read more

My sweet baby girl went on to cross over rainbow bridge today and I just wanted to commend VEG. They were absolutely fantastic and our room was so peaceful and beautiful where Posie left us. Our room included a couch, dim lighting, blankets, a sound machine, chocolate, they offered free snacks and water, along with a very understanding staff who explained the entire process to us. I did not feel rushed at all in the process of this and the staff treated Posie as though they were her own but also were extremely professional! They did a basic exam and check in and listened to all my questions and concerns. They reassured me and advocated for my pet appropriately and also respected my decisions. I could not imagine doing this line of work and seeing all the hard things they see with peoples beloved pets. I would highly recommend emergency care here! read more

We had to rush my cat in on Thursday evening due to a sudden decline in her health. Dr. Keffer and our nurse, Katie, were phenomenal. They did everything they possibly could have for our girl. Unfortunately, we did have to let our Dixie girl cross the rainbow bridge, but the staff at VEG made sure that she and us were comfortable during her transition. It is apparent that this is what Katie is meant to do in this world. Her kindness and compassion during this time did not go unnoticed.
