After an ass grabbing good time. Wait. Hold on. I'm going to start over. As new patrons to this establishment the expectation was nothing short of cheap drinks, and divey vibes. Both were true, but the real icing on the cake was the blatant sexual assault of the bar. After a girls butt was grabbed under her dress the bars owner's response was equally as horrifying. In an exclusive interview with the owner we asked "what was his problem, is he gone?" And her response was...."He gets like that when he drinks" implying that this man is a regular and that Sunnys tolerates that behavior. Will not return. This is unacceptable. read more

Oh Lord. I don't really know where to start. My boyfriend and I ventured downtown one Friday night at about 10 to have "a couple drinks" after dinner. We started off at Flying Saucer, but decided to change locations after our first drink because of a rapping homeless guy and some beatboxing frat boys. Neither of us really hang out in downtown much and we weren't sure where to go. My GoogleMaps app showed a bar called Sunny's nearby. We were game for trying a new place, so we walked over. We weren't really ready for what we found. You know how most bars are kind of dark? Sunny's is not most bars. The place is brightly lit. Yellow walls. The decor is very Jimmy Buffett--parrots, palm trees. That sort of thing. It kind of looks like you would expect it to serve sno-cones, not drinks. The computer cash register along the wall behind the bar is obviously just for show, as it is covered in stickers and Sunny just memorizes what everyone orders, apparently. There is a popcorn machine. The music playing was odd. The first three or four songs were birthday themed. One of them seemed to be a Christian song ("Happy Birthday, Jesus"?). Later on, the music changed. I heard Limp Bizkit. I heard Lady Gaga. I heard Ray Charles. Something for everyone. People were having pizzas delivered to the bar all night. There were little baskets of bar snacks, including a snack mix full of cheese puffs. I don't even eat bar snacks, but my interest was piqued by the selection at Sunny's. At one point, some guys at a table outside walked on their tab. Sunny went after them. The restrooms are kind of hard to find because they're off a room located behind the bar. A regular pointed them out to me. There is shuffleboard near the restrooms though! The crowd got a little...eclectic towards the end of the night. My personal favorite was a guy sitting at one of the tables outside, just carving a linoleum tile into...something else. The drinks here are STRONG. I believe the drinks are cheaper than drinks at most other downtown locations, but I don't go downtown that much, so I'm not sure. We lost count on how many drinks we had, but we think we paid about $5-$6 each. Better $6 for a strong gin and tonic than $6 for a weak cosmo, amirite? This is not a sleek, trendy bar. If that's your scene, Sunny's is not going to deliver. If you're open-minded, not easily weirded out by the colorful people wandering around downtown, and want a really interesting night, Sunny's just might be the place for you. Overall, we had a great time and fondly remember (some of) our night at Sunny's. read more

How can I NOT give Sunny's 5 stars? This little gem of a bar is fantastic. I love dive bars. Sunny's is where you go to avoid the suits, frats and douches. This place is so laid back. Personally I think it needs to be on a beach. The decor is beachy & eclectic. The popcorn is addicting. The beer is cold. The drinks are STRONG. The owner Sunny is also the bartender. She is just plain & simply awesome. So friendly. There is pool tables & such in the back room. The jukebox is always palying. This is a bar you would expect to find in a distant suburb. I was drawn in because the sign outside says they have a shuffleboard table. Turns out it is one of those half-table bounce back things. Its decorated from a dollar store or a party store and the lights are so bright. Definitely not a place to go after work downtown unless you work in jeans. read more

Got a stiff G&T and a margarita and both came to $11 total. The staff was polite and friendly and the drinks were strong. They were playing rap music on a Saturday night, so it had the appearance of a dive bar/club. Not a bad combo, just different than what I'm used to on a Saturday night. Glad we came by. read more

Lovin' it! I travel a lot (a lot) for my job, and I love nothing more than a wind down and chat with a friendly stranger by the bar. On this particular evening, I walked into the Flying Saucer, took 15 paces passed the overcrowded and noisy bar, and walked straight back out. It was noisy, the aircon was stupidly cold and the customers were....well...I walked out. Checking my iPhone I read a few reviews of Sunny's and noticed it was just across the street. At first I was unsure. As the reviews here say, bright, yellow and loud. Within 5 minutes I was loving it! Sunny herself is a delight. A pretty blond who is uber-friendly, pours a generous G&T and isn't afraid to shout down any nonsense in her bar. The regulars are also very friendly - you are welcomed into their place of escape rather than frowned upon as a stranger. I am moving on tonight, which is probably for the best as I have a headache this morning! Don't think about it.....go to Sunny's! read more

This was, seriously, one of the highlights of my trip to Houston. I'm pretty sure the bartender's name was J.R. and he was AWESOME. Great personality, great drinks and the atmosphere was perfect for a Friday afternoon. If I lived in Houston I would go here OFTEN. Heard about the place from a friend. Checked out the reviews and rushed over the give it a try. It is the perfect dive bar (but not dark and gross). Loved the characters... Very eclectic. Had great conversations. Its truly a place with its regulars but they make new people feel welcome. Drinks are great and VERY reasonably priced. For a small place they have a great selection. Yes, it is definitely a dive but totally fun! We found this place accidently while walking around on Christmas Eve. Sunny is great & the patrons are really friendly. Sunny's is the most amazing place. I've been stopping by weekly for the past month, and each time, I notice that everyone talks to everyone there. It's like the Houston equivalent of Cheers. There's usually free food to nibble on, and they always seem to have great beers I've never heard of to satisfy my need to experiment. I can't say enough about Sunny's. She hugs me when we walk in, she knows what we want and makes us feel like family. For us that's huge since we aren't from here and all of our true family is on the East Coast. We go, we drink, we play cards and make plenty of friends. It's mostly regulars, but not the pretentious kind that look at new comers with that "what are you doing here" kind of look. Franks pizza will deliver here, and they usually do several times a night. This is such a great bar. It is a true bar, nothing more or less. The only food they serve is popcorn and soaked pineapples. The drinks are strong and cheap and the other patrons are generally easy to chat with. The bartenders work hard and are very friendly. I've never waited more than 3 minutes for a drink. read more

We love Sunny's bar and Sunny. My partner and I both work & live in the city so we've been here a few times. This is a place where you easily make friends with the person sitting next to you at the bar or with people in the back playing pool. Sunny is usually there and she makes everyone feel welcomed to her place. The restrooms are clean lady's so feel comfortable knowing that even though the place is divey and most people expect a bad bathroom situation out of that scenario, thats not true in this case. To the drinks.. Pineapple soaked in vodka, it's potent! Don't go to town like a little school girl at your first party or you'll be face to the ground drunk. The frozen drink is delicious and not to sweet in my opinion. For me the sweet stuff makes waking up the next day so much worse. Jell-O shots are my partners thing, I don't like the texture of jell-o but some people love these things and they are only a 1$!! From what I can tell every time I've been here there is always something cooked in a crock pot with other foods on a table back by the pool tables. Which is nice to get something in your stomach so you don't get drunk to quickly or to help soak up alcohol in your system. It's very casually here, you can wear you blue jeans and the shirt that has inappropriate slogans on it. You also won't be judged if you come in looking nicer or in your business suit after work. That's what's great about it here. Everyone fits in, drinks are a good price. Also there's a patio for the smokers and people who wanna watch other drunk people downtown bar hopping. Last night a friend textd me she was going to Sunnys to meet a friend... I never ever go downtown and was already turned off by the idea! I get there and I loved a whole in the wall bar with pool tables jukebox and it DID NOT smell like smoke! Thank God! The waitress/bartender was so nice and accomidating the whole time!
