It is tradition to drink alcohol at West Alabama Ice House while eating tacos from Tacos Tierra Caliente. I am now a disable person and I find this place very not friendly to people with disability. It is still a great third space for people who live in this neighborhood come and hang out. They have a good amount of parking spot on site but sometime you have to park on the street, be careful on where you park. There are some nice sports game you can play here. read more

Nothing fancy, just cold beer, picnic tables, dogs everywhere, and an easy atmosphere that makes it impossible not to relax. I brought a friend in town tonight who had never been to a real Texas dive and this was the perfect place to show him the vibe. We grabbed a couple of beers, sat under the lights, and ended up talking for hours while people drifted in and out with their dogs and bikes. It reminded me why I keep coming back. Service is quick, the crowd is always friendly, and the whole place feels like old Houston in the best way. We came here as a group to hang out and have to say I loved the space! The employee at the bar was friendly and I got the boozy kombucha. And it was so good! I was a bit sad there were no food options, but the food trucks were nearby and we were told we could bring their food inside. The interior was airy but covered with good weather protection. Not what I remembered but exactly what I expected. I haven't been in over 30 years but we were back in town and wanted to trip down memory lane. The patio is now more like an enclosed porch which was great since it was chilly. Otherwise it's what it's been since the 1920's: a place meet up with friends and get some tooth cracking cold beer (or wine or cider now). If you're looking for someplace elegant look elsewhere. If you want cold beer and a historic setting - 10/10. I just wish I could peek back in time and see Houston as it was when the Icehouse opened. read more

This is one of my favorite places in the neighborhood - I will always love this ice house over all the newer and shiny ones in the city. I've been coming here as long as I can remember. It's a dive / no frills place you can hang out with friends and family, grab an ice cold beer, and watch local sporting events with fellow fans. Drinks are essentially just beer bottles and cans. They've added some modern touches without affecting the overall old school charm of the place (like taking credit card, more TV screens around the establishment, and a TouchTunes jukebox) - but it's still a dive. You see a cross section of Houston here of all ages, colors, sizes, and backgrounds. People here are the nicest, and the vibe is never anything but chill. The experience here is not complete without tacos from the Tacos Tierra Caliente truck across the street, which they let you bring over. Nothing beats ice cold Modelo while scarfing down barbacoa tacos with that hot red salsa. This place is a Houston institution that I hope will continue to stay in the neighborhood for decades to come! read more

This is a great hangout inside the loop. I used to live and work down the road from here, so it was a great place to stop by and grab a beer. I think my go to at the time was Bud Platinum, just because it was there on the shelf and it was so dang hot outside that heavier beers just didn't seem like a good fit. My taste in beer has improved since then. They have food trucks nearby, with one on the corner and one at the adjacent grocery store. The gyro truck is no longer there, but it was some of the best Greek food I've had in town. The taco truck was no frills, but had some amazing street tacos. read more

I have been going to West Alabama Ice House for years. Great place to sit down, unwind with a few cold beers. Plenty of space, friendly staff with a laid back atmosphere. Parking can be tough around the facility, but there's normally ample street parking. Watch for the signs, because being towed can ruin your day. read more

This place is no frills with a $2 "krappy hour" that is fairly long, that cannot be beat. This ice house is exactly what I would expect from an outdoor dive bar with the typical dive bar patrons to expect. A lot of business people come seemingly after work, which is the time I usually come to the ice house. I was not expecting so many people in suits. Usually there is just one bartender, but there hasn't been a wait to get drinks whenever I have been there. You can get food across the street at a taco truck that is very tasty, or there is usually someone walking around selling tamales. I have seen dogs in most areas of this place, so bring your dogs. They have picnic tables with umbrellas besides the more standard seating at the bar and booths built in to the patio. There is a good amount of seating and parking, which is always helpful. read more

Located in the Montrose neighborhood, it slings an large assortment of beers and spirits for those who need to wind down. There's plenty of seating and an outdoor court area for lounging and vibing. Music blasts a mix of rock, club, and retro hip/hop to enhance the experience. One of the best parts of this is the Tacos Tierra Caliente truck nearby when you need some grub to go with your booze. This is a theme with this city and catching on nationwide with food trucks being more present at bars and icehouses. A genius concept if you ask me. Parking kind of sucks due to the lack of spaces so you'll have to find spots on the street or behind next to the houses. So get here early and ready to have fun! read more

The bartenders here are super shady. I asked the girl bartender tonight to close my tab and (thankfully) muttered, "I hope it's under $100." She responded, "It's $110." She then proceeded to place a receipt in front of me for simply the total bill, with a line for an extra tip - no actual charges of the beers my friends and I drank. I asked for an itemized receipt and the new receipt showed - 12 beers at $6.50. 3 drinks at $8.50. and then an OPEN tab for $19. I thought "What the hell, since when did bars throw an automatic tip on one person's tab (I was not part of one large group or anything) without disclosing it to the customer on the actual receipt??? I said to the girl that this is such BS for her to try to give me a receipt that is CLEARLY TRICKING ME to tip on top of a hidden tip. It's dumbfounding to me that you think you deserve $19 + whatever ADDITONAL tip I might have been conned out of. Keep in mind, all you did was pull a can of beer out of the fridge and place it in front of me. It'd be better to let me grab my own beer and pay a cashier instead of a bartender trying to rob me. It's a shame, I really like this place but I will never return because of this shady experience. I urge all future guests to make sure you check your receipt because these bartenders will tax you without you even knowing. I would have happily paid an 18-20% gratuity, but for an establishment to try to trick me into paying 36-40%, I will never give another dollar out of my pocket to them. Age ain't nothin' but a number, baby. WAIH is pushing past 80, and can still can keep up with the best of 'em. As a matter o' fact, I think it's by far the best ice house in Houston. And I'm not the only one who agrees. On a perfect day, locals flock to this neighborhood dive like bees to honey. Bikers, hipsters, bad asses, frat kids and sweet little Texas gals like me. But ya know what? You can also kick it at WAIH during craptastic weather, too. They've got heaters and wind blockers for when it's nippy; fans for when it's hot 'n' sweaty; and covered seating for when it's wet. You can enjoy a quintessential taste of Texas; experience the laid-back charm of the country all right here in the bustling city. Find sassy but sweet bartenders that call you "darlin'" slinging back an assortment of cold pops from behind the bar, picnic tables, a basketball half court, corn hole, horse shoe, a great jukebox, live music, a disco ball, small armies of kids running around, dogs ... this is what every watering hole should be. I also hear they're BYO-Liquor since - true to ice house form - they only serve beer (and wine too). If hunger strikes, they sometimes have killer FREE hot dogs on the pit (Fridays only). And as a reminder to always keep cash on ya, there's the Tacos Tierra Caliente truck on the bar-grounds (update: It moved right next door), frequent visits from the Tamale Family, or you can order up some pizzas from a nearby eatery (use the Yelp app to help ya out!). Visited this gem for the first time just a few days ago with a friend, AND I LOVE IT ALREADY. Between the corn hole and picnic tables, it certainly captures a certain amount of Texas charm. Most of the seating is outdoors at picnic-style tables. I've never been a fan of set-ups like this because I like back support when I'm sitting. You're not going to find that here. They have a basketball hoop out on the patio too. What's bizarre is that it's really close to cornhole so I'm not really sure how that works when people are playing both. Some guys were walking by when we were there selling tamales. But the real catch is Tacos Tierra Caliente, the food truck that's located in the parking lot adjacent to West Alabama. They've been listed in Alison Cook's top 100 restaurants and they serve authentic tacos. West Alabama is a cool spot when the weather is nice but I wish the seating situation was a little more comfortable and they had an indoor section for hot days. read more

Dogs are allowed and there are a few games: cornhole, ping pong, pool, and even a basketball goal. A very cool atmosphere and a nice outside bar to have a drink and good conversation. Even with the courtyard full of people, it never felt loud and the fact that I didn't need to yell and didn't feel embarrassed when I laughed loudly was perfect, which is probably because it's open and not enclosed. A great neighborhood bar with a large variety of canned/bottled beers. They have a huge "backyard bbq" style seating area, with a basketball hoop, cornole, jenga, and a number of other games. While I don't believe they serve food there, it was great to have a food truck right next door (see Tacos Tierra Caliente). As a fan of stout and porters, the staff knew exactly what to suggest and were very friendly! I thought the price was a bit high for specific beers ($6/can of 8th wonder vietnamese coffee porter), but I suppose that's what you pay for the environment, etc. They had a beer called "Sex Panther," so I was obligated to try it as well- per a nod to one of my favorite movies, Anchorman. In true Yelper fashion, I love to try new places and have avoided becoming a regular anywhere until I moved to Houston and started going to the West Alabama Ice House. It was a significant deciding factor in selecting a neighborhood to live in, and thankfully, we ended up just around the corner from the WAIC. As a new Houstonian, I had never heard of an ice house, but I love that they are a part of history. Another perk is Tacos Tierra Caliente, which is conveniently across the street. I'm not sure if its the tacos or the icehouse that keeps us coming back. They always have a number of interesting beers available--both local and imported. The bartenders are always friendly and patient with my indecisiveness. And, the best part is that you can always bring your furry friends. Our dog loves to go to the ice house with us and make new friends. The crowd is eclectic, and you will most likely run into someone you know here. You can also play basketball or pool while you're enjoying drinks. If you foolishly forget your koozie, they sometimes have extras upon request.
