My friends and i ended up here after ditching the Beer Festival. I immediately was drawn to their kids sized table by the door. We were the first people in at 5pm, so Sunny, the bartender, asked us for help turning all the neon and jukebox and signs on. She thanked us with free jell-o shots and everclear cherries. Then she made our drinks and when i asked for equal parts vodka, red bull, peach schnapps, and blue curacao, i think she just herd blue and vodka! She is very generous with the pours! The shuffleboard and pool tables and darts in the back were a hit, too. Other parties ordered buckets of beers and headed to the darts. All in all this place really felt like it would be a local bar in someone's neighborhood, not a well hidden spot in downtown. And I mean that in a good way. read more

This place is ridiculous. Upon entering, guests lose all of their inhibitions and anything goes. Seriously, this is a no rules kind of place. I've seen customers pouring their own drinks behind the bar, the bartender took a swig of my drink before giving it to me, and my friends smoked cigarettes in the back hallway. Then one rowdy night at Sunny's waaaay past 2AM Sunny told us all to get into the back room. She closed up the bar but still let everyone stay and party! I was in Houston for one night and happened upon Sunny's looking for a place to relax, have a drink and chat up some locals to get the skinny on Houston. I managed to accomplish all three goals. Sunny's is a laid back place with a friendly atmosphere and great prices. This was our second stop for the night and, by far, the most enjoyable. Sunny's is everything the previous commenters said. Yellow walls (though covered in hilarious different signs and stickers) not very much seating, but awesome pool tables, foosball table, and shuffleboard. Specials are written on a light-up board by the bar and I don't think they have happy hour prices because they are well-priced to begin with. We ordered buckets of beer ($15), simply because we were serving four and wanted variety that we could choose from. I am not sure about their pricing/ordering policies about buckets but it seemed like any of their 15 or so options were available at the same price. Abita and Red Stripe were my hits for the night. Their island punch ($5)drink was heavy on the pineapple punch so it was heaven for me, though not very strong. My friend and I loved watching our dates getting hustled while playing pool for rounds. The first time they won and were treated to Tecates but the second time they got a major beatdown. A few shady customers that even the bartender noticed but still a very nice place. Definitely will return. We were all dressed to the nines for a last-night-in-Houston celebration but it is definitely a place to go while relaxing and being comfortable. The couches around the game room are very comfortable. It is not as bright and lit up as most people are saying. I don't even know how to rate a place like this. It's dated and the decor a bit corny. When I went the music was ALL OVER THE PLACE, literally there was some backstreet boys and some Bruce Springsteen. All the patrons were drunk when they arrived it seemed. The drinks were ok and super cheap. The crowd was a weird mix, of twenty somethings ,old men regulars, and couples . We came specifically to play pool and stayed long enough to watch a game and play two of our own. Not sure we would come back. read more

It's nice to find a place downtown that's not pretentious and everyone their seems friendly. There are pool tables and a Foosball table in the "back" along with a dart board. It's a little small and difficult to hang out with a group, but if you want a change of pace from the rest of the bars downtown, perhaps it's worth checking out. read more

Definitely not the stuffy, straight faced, boring spots that some of downtown has to offer. Here you can completely chill out, talk about any & everything & be yourself. I've had some really fun nights sitting out in the front w/ some of the regulars. HILARIOUS is all I can say. They have good happy hour prices. I have a close friend that loves this place. I know a lot of folks that rave about it. Meh. Been there. I've never had a good vibe. I've always felt uncomfortable and not wanted. Sunny has never given me the time of day and the word friendly would never cross my mind as an adjective to describe her as a bartender or owner of an establishment. And for anyone (including the little boy who sent me a "compliment") that wants to accuse me of never having been to this establishment and just being a hater, you would be dead wrong. I would move on from this place. It's pretty bright in there, I like my divey bars to be dark and dank, there were zero women, popcorn machine was empty. On a positive note, the bartender was quick and the drinks were cheap. LOVE this place for the great games and the awesome ambiance: foosball, darts, shuffleboard. It's the perfect place to have a chill (or uproarious, as ours was) evening after work, really. The place is a true "hole in the wall" at first glance, but keep walking around to the back of the bar and you will be rewarded with where the table games are squirreled away! A note about food: APPARENTLY they are ok with us bringing in outside food... because my coworker and I definitely hauled in two boxes of pizza from Bombay Pizza and no one said a word. Also, Sunny's has the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen in a supposed "dive bar"... though the door from the bar to the bathroom is quite inconspicuous, and tucked away in the back by the foosball table. Minus a star for the following: -Only having buckets ($15 for 5 domestic beers)-- no pitchers??? -Parking can be atrocious, even after downtown goes supposedly dead after working hours. Since I had an awesome time my first visit, we decided to go back. Had a great time until we received the check. Clearly we were overcharged for the drinks, so I asked the bartender if she could give me an itemized bill so I could see what were were billed for. So her response was "we don't give itemized bills". I asked how am I supposed to know what you charged me for? She asked to see the card and the receipt and said "it is what it is" and tossed the receipt and card back and walled away. My husband spoke with the owner and he said the bill was incorrect and the bartender was new. He did adjust the bill properly, but this "young lady" attitude was absolutely uncalled for and very rude. Loved the place, but if this is how you treat your patrons then I will pass. read more

Nice little dive bar nestled right into the heart of downtown Houston. While other bars are selling a hundred artisan brews on tap, this place has PBR and Lone Star Beer served in coozies. This is one of the best downtown dive-bars around. I stumbled upon this place, not sure what to expect based on the exterior signage. But once inside, it's like you've entered the 'fun-zone'. $1 Jello shots. 25 cent pineapple bites. Awesome jukebox tunes. And free popcorn! The staff, Sunny and her son, are friendly and very welcoming to new patrons. And the regulars are chummy and happy to buy a new patron a drink. That night I visited (it was Karaoke night), a regular patron named Davey Boo-Boo, bought 3 rounds for the bar. It was a good time and he was a very sociable fellow. The best part about this bar is that Frank's pizza delivers inside the bar. So when we got hungry, Mr. Davey Boo-Boo called up Frank's pizza and within 20 minutes, the pizza was walking into the bar. Much love Davey Boo-Boo! They also have a Touch-tunes Jukebox, so if you have the Touch-tunes app, you are able to queue up songs without ever leaving the bar. This place is adorable. It's decorated like a little tiki hut and there are tacky bumper stickers lining the walls. When I went there, the crowd was sparse but friendly. In fact, I wasn't even planning on going in until someone came out of the bar and insisted that I stop by. After the bartender had me sample all of her different flavored vodkas, I realized that she was THE SUNNY. I was a little star struck! They have fun drink specials like $1 jello shots, $2 sucker shots (those test tube shots), and whip cream flavored vodka shots called "Whip its." Oh, and Sunny had been experimenting with some pineapples and had soaked them in Everclear. She made sure to put a couple of those in my drink as well! Four stars is as high as I go but I'd give Sunny more if I could. It's not a dive bar, it's a regular and delightful bar. Not a chain or a high end thing, it's just a great bar. Spent a bit of time talking to Sunny and she's just a wonderful person. It doesn't have the range of beers that flying saucer has across the road but I honestly had a hard time finding an IPA that I wanted at FS anyway. After an ass grabbing good time. Wait. Hold on. I'm going to start over. As new patrons to this establishment the expectation was nothing short of cheap drinks, and divey vibes. Both were true, but the real icing on the cake was the blatant sexual assault of the bar. After a girls butt was grabbed under her dress the bars owner's response was equally as horrifying. In an exclusive interview with the owner we asked "what was his problem, is he gone?" And her response was...."He gets like that when he drinks" implying that this man is a regular and that Sunnys tolerates that behavior. Will not return. This is unacceptable. read more
