I mean the thing weighed like a kilo, and the portions of the premiums I chose were so generous. Nothing worse than when you pay like £4 to add chicken and they give you a paltry amount. This was the opposite. Now, quantity aside, I also found that the quality was superb. Everything was super tasty and the pesto dressing was delicious. My only recommendation is to be a bit more specific on what the "salads" are and what's in them for people with dietary restrictions but overall yeah, this place do a bang up lunch at a good price.

The wait is long during lunch hours as the line goes down the street...though that should be a good indication, yes ? The Salad Kitchen is in a funky little food community near Old Street with numerous places to sit, easy or to grab something from the food stalls. The Salad Kitchen has VERY limited options, both times I've been, it's only been chicken or eggplant in the salad. The cost was £5.40 - which is a very good price, I feel. There is only 2 tables, both with two chairs - so I think most people grab their salad and then head somewhere else - though I did get in (without having to pay extra) and it was fine. A great place for a great salad, for a great price on the run. I walked 20 minutes out of my way, and it was so worth it! :-)

I do think they did more but I was blinded by the arancini... I really only wanted a box of 4 arancini with their lovely garlic mayo but thought I'd counteract the starch with some salad and went for the salad box. £4.50 I believe, for 4 arancini and some basic - but tasty - salad. As I went late in the day and they were going to close soon, the girl behind the counter gave me a couple extra arancini. They were as good as ever, but as it was late they were a little on the hard side. However, they were still delicious and I didn't leave a scrap of the arancini. The salad was fine - a lettuce mix, topped with shredded carrot with chickpeas, and then some jalapenos and crispy onions. I'm definitely going to be going back soon during lunch time to get some arancini done up nice and fresh, and hopefully will be able to update this to the 5 star review I know they deserve when they're on point.

Good ingredients - Simply but Expertly Prepared. Good ingredients are critical and flavor retention in the kitchen is life and death. We did a mixed vegetable soup. (Fancy name - Tuscan soup . Simpler reality - vegetables boiled in a stock and then pureed.) Done right - this is one of the staples of vegetarian comfort food - and places like Planet Organic do terrific versions of the dish. The Carnevale version was tasteless brown stuff with orange flecks. A plate of artichokes (not a fancy one drowning in flavored bread stuffing. The pure up and simple - here is your artichoke - buy a good one and cook it to keep the taste.) The artichokes came out small and tasteless. Admittedly artichokes were not in season when I ate here .... but if this is the case - why are they on the menu? Manchego with quince and biscuits were lovely - but then the kitchen did nothing here. But at least they bought good cheese, quince and biscuits. The room itself shows the same sloppiness of execution that is shown in the cooking. On the night we were there one fluorescent like fixture was broken with the bulb stinking out of the fixture at a 30 degree angle. Packages of napkins were piled up in the dining room for storage as if we were eating in a cleaning goods closet. Yes the place is small and storage is at a premium. But even if one must store goods in the dining room - can't one at least cover it up so it doesn't look like your paper depository? Add to this that the place charges Barbican Banker prices. If I am paying this much for vegetables, please buy good ones - and actually take some care in their preparation - rather than just blasting them through and covering up the results with sauce..

In 2009 I started eating meat again, but I never stopped eating at this place, because it's truly one of the best restaurants in London, whether you're a vegetarian or not. The ambiance and atmosphere feels like you're in some secret garden, hidden away from all the chaos of the city. In 2010 I took my sister here, and she said it was one of the best Italian-Mediterranean meals she has ever eaten. Quite a statement considering she's a real foodie and has been to hundreds if not thousands of different restaurants in Italy among other places. If you don't have the time or a date to eat at this quaint restaurant, I would highly suggest getting takeaway. This is what I did at least once or twice a week for five years (yes the food was that good). The takeaway was about half the price of eating in, although you only got the special of the day, which changed often. The halloumi egg piadine is to die for, as is the risotto and pretty much everything they serve. The sandwiches they make at lunch are awesome such as the eggplant and mozzarella and the brownies and drinks are really good too. This is one of the places I miss the most in London. I still crave that Halloumi and Egg sandwich almost on a daily basis, I hope I get to eat it again some day.

There's several booths where you can eat in but they also do takeaway. But whether eating in or taking out, I love the food here. The salad boxes are £3.50 for any combination of apple slaw, bean salad, jalapeños and other freshly made veggie delights. And of course, the arancini. Crunchy on the outside soft and creamy on the inside. These little morsels are perfect with the garlic and tomato sauces that accompany them. Once you start you won't stop. Luckily they're sold in snack boxes of three, five and if you're feeling up for a challenge (or sharing), twelve. I keep coming back to this place and they never fail to fill my luchtimes with arancini perfection. Yay arancini!
