I reviewed this facility recently and I focused on the Social Services team. This time I'd like to recognize the respiratory team who is led by Yvonne Bacolod, the Director of Respiratory Therapy (RT). The RT group are our heroes. My husband had a trach put in in Nov. 2025 and was on a ventilator in three hospitals over many months. He went to a well-known hospital which specializes in weaning patients off ventilators. They tout their success rate in weaning patients. I learned more at Sunnyside about assisting my husband at home with a vent for the two months he was at Sunnyside than I did at the other hospital in three months. The other hospital was rigid in their RT approach and it works for many patients. Sunnyside is a lot more relaxed in their approach at weaning patients and it made a lot of difference in the speed of my husband's recovery. One of the Sunnyside RTs, Jose, had a sixth sense as to what my husband needed. My husband was having trouble breathing and Jose showed the extent of his skills on my husband. I sat in awe watching Jose work and have used his techniques many times now. Tamene was at the ready twice when my husband's oxygen tanked and he needed emergency help otherwise he would have literally died. I thought Mark was going to have to go back to Torrance Memorial however Tamene worked his "magic", praise God, and rescued my husband. I can't tell you all the other amazing things that happened like when one of the RTs, Brandon, prayed with my husband when my husband was anxious and had difficulty breathing, or all the encouraging things the RTs shared with my husband and me on a daily basis. The RTs showed extensive care, skill and concern each day and that made all the difference in my husband's recovery. So many things can go wrong in a hospital when you are dealing with ill patients; when people are involved there will be some missteps and things may not happen as quickly as we'd like. I don't know if you can find a medical facility where everything is perfect. I've found the family has to be involved, ask questions, be present, and help out when you can. I feel bad for the folks who write reviews who are out of town and can't be there in person with their loved one. I do know that the entire RT Team at Sunnyside deserves recognition starting with Yvonne, the director and her team: Jose, Tamene, Lacel, Brandon, DJ, Jessica, Czarina, Chris, David, Tamara, Derick, Korede, Marcus, Joseph, and Toya. My dad is a resident at this facility. Most of the nurses on the floor are kind and friendly, and I truly appreciate the care many of them provide. However, my experiences with the nurses at the 200 station have been extremely disappointing. During multiple visits, I felt as though my questions were an inconvenience. The staff at that desk were not approachable or helpful, and their demeanor came across as "why are you bothering me?" I initially thought it might have just been a one-time interaction, but unfortunately, it happened more than once. When I went to other nursing stations, the staff were polite and willing to assist, which made the contrast even more noticeable. I understand that many facilities are understaffed and that healthcare workers are under a lot of pressure. I can be patient and understanding if someone is busy or brief. What was upsetting, however, was the dismissive attitude. When I asked to speak with the head nurse about my dad's condition, I was met with visible eye-rolling (yes, even behind a mask it's noticeable) and told to "write your note on a blank paper," after which the nurse looked away as if my concern wasn't important. On another occasion, I asked for help opening the family room, which was supposed to be open at 8:00 a.m. It was already 30 minutes past, and this was the second time I had asked. The only response I received was, "Well, it should be open," followed by being ignored. There was no offer to check on it or find someone who could help. Bringing a loved one to a facility like this is already emotionally difficult. A little kindness and basic courtesy go a long way. I hope this feedback encourages management to address the attitude and approach of the nursing staff at the 200 station. It would make a meaningful difference for families who are already going through a challenging time. read more

I would like to start this review off with the most sincere and gratification regarding Sunnyside Nursing Center. My mother suffered at stroke on 12/29/25, and arrived here bedridden on 2/4/25. Today is 6/20 and with the help of God, the nursing staff Sunnyside my mother is walking out of here today. The staff was very attentive to her situation especially Janetta, Genevieve , Noemi, Valerie. The PT/OT staff Erica, Andrea, Sydney and Tim worked tirelessly to get my mother back walking and functional. I would especially lole to thank Josalito for his assistance with the financial aspect and getting my mother approved for Medical. Finally i am really overjoyed with the service provided from Sunnyside and would definitely recommend this facility if you have a loved one in need of care and attention. I suffered a brain hemorrhagic stroke in January of 2026 and after months of hospital stays, I finally ended up at Sunnyside Nursing Center for my final 8 weeks before coming home to recoup. Sunnyside provided excellent care from all of their teams, many of the staff were extremely skilled, and I credit Dr. Yeh especially on helping me pull through the toughest condition I have ever faced. When I arrived, I could not walk, and 8 weeks later I was able to climb stairs using a cane, and walk using a walker anywhere I wanted to go. The physical therapy was super, and all of the therapists were excellent at delivering quality workouts that were tailored specifically for my condition. The rooms were kept very clean, the wound care was done professionally, and overall my experiences with the staff and doctors was always positive and geared to help me get home as quickly as possible, which is what I wanted. I would give Sunnyside 5 stars if I thought their food service was on a par with their staff services. I had a tracheostomy tube and had to eat soft foods which the kitchen did their best, but some of the dishes were not up to standards. Once I graduated the soft foods phase of my recovery, the food improved greatly as did my appetite and overall well-being. I would recommend Sunnyside to anyone who requires sub-acute care for an extended period, they have the equipment, staff and doctors onsite to deliver top-quality care for each individual's needs. read more

I would strongly advise others to avoid this nursing facility. During my initial phone inquiry, the operator I spoke with was rude and dismissive. Shortly after, he was also rude to my sister and insisted that he had already spoken with her--when in fact, he had spoken to me. We have two completely different phone numbers, yet he was adamant that the conversation had been with her. This left my sister confused and genuinely worried, as she believed she may have missed critical information. If basic communication is handled this poorly and aggressively, it raises serious concerns about how the nurses and staff communicate internally and, more importantly, how senior residents are cared for. Professionalism, clarity, and compassion are essential in a facility responsible for vulnerable individuals, and this interaction showed none of those qualities. Based on this experience alone, we decided not to move forward with this facility and will be avoiding it at all costs. read more

The person we spoke with was incredibly rude and disrespectful, especially given the nature of the situation and the vulnerability of families reaching out for care. There was a complete lack of empathy, professionalism, and basic courtesy. When you're dealing with a nursing center, compassion and clear communication should be the bare minimum. Instead, we were made to feel like an inconvenience rather than people seeking help and information for a loved one. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this interaction left a very bad one. This was the 2nd time my 90 something y.o. grandmother unfortunately had to be placed here. Last year was a pretty rough experience when she spent 5 -7 weeks here. Last year the staff wasn't as friendly or diligent as they were this time around- Grandma was out of there in 11 days. The CNAs were quickly responsive each time I called on them for assistance whether it was to change bedding, get hot water or answer any questions. My grandmother liked the food and had little to no overall complaints (which is rare for her). The OT and PT team were very patient when working with her for 20-30 minutes every other day or so. This place is really busy, just as you can imagine with so many aging people. I don't know if they have volunteers but it would be a blessing to the staff, and patients if highschoolers were afforded an opportunity to assist and interact with this population. read more

It's appalling how lackluster and lackadaisical the staff is at this institution. The hierarchy of neglect doesn't discriminate, from the doctors to Cna's. If at all possible don't ever allow for your loved ones to take residency in this trash facility. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this facility is poorly managed and severely understaffed. Communication was inconsistent, and staff often seemed overwhelmed or indifferent to residents' needs. My loved one was neglected in fundamental ways--medications were missed, hygiene was not adequately maintained, and requests for assistance were frequently ignored or delayed. The environment felt more like a warehouse than a place of care and compassion. We raised concerns multiple times, but they were met with excuses or empty reassurances. This is not just about inconvenience--it's about dignity and safety. I walked in to find my loved one in a hospital gown and someone else's clothes. I asked why she was wearing someone else's clothes if she had her own. I would strongly urge others to look elsewhere for elder care. I would also like my Doctor Who I had for the second time, I've been there, Dr. Turner, who was concerned about who was going on with me and my blood sugar and we solve that and I thank you for taking the time to listen out so I can champion for myself. I like to thank the therapist that eating every day so where I was improving in my movement and being able to make my range of motion a little easier each day I think the aid baby took care of me so very well so clean who showered meal wash my hair eating everything you guys did in Sunnyside. My mother in law was admitted to this facility today, we were unhappy with the crowded room she was given, so we asked to speak to whom ever was in charge of the unit. A nurse named LD great us with a smile, her bedside manners was nothing but excellent, she was able to change our Mom's room in a matter of minutes, she had a view with a window and closer to the bathroom. I stayed at Sunnyside for two weeks after surgery for a fractured ankle. The CNA's did an outstanding job taking care of my needs. They and the nurses and doctors were extremely attentive. I also was able to observe the care they gave to patients with dementia and stroke patients. The staff showed extreme patience when feeding them and changing them. The physical therapists are outstanding! This place is kept super clean which is impressive because they have high volume of patients. read more

When I was looking for care for my father I didn't want to believe the reviews. So out of the three choices we had to pick from we picked the least of three evils. Just hoping the reviews were wrong or that our experience would be different. Unfortunately, the reviews aren't wrong. The last day my father was with this facility, I found him in his excrement, eating his breakfast! The night before he had trouble breathing, and when I received the call, they said they had called the doctor for next step of care. I arrived at the facility at 9 o'clock that morning, still no response from the doctor. I was like why is that? It doesn't make sense?The physician assistant finally calls the facility back and they bring me the phone to tell me that the facility had the WRONG number to my father's doctor! How do you have a wrong number to a doctors office for a patient under your care? Negligence is how. It was so convenient hours later to ship my father out via emergency to relieve the facility from liability that I am sure they were feeling that morning. During the night, do not expect your loved one to be taken care of because they ignore any call requesting help as my father said. He said he had to get out of that facility because he was going to die there. The most disgusting thing to me was when I sent my sister to retrieve his items the same night he was taken via emergency back to the hospital. They already had cleared his bed and removed his name from the room he was in probably hoping he didn't come back. Well, Sunnyside, you got your wish because unfortunately, Monday, my beautiful father passed away. Had to give one star to post this review, but this facility gets no stars from me! read more

An absolute horrible experience for my mother who was here for 3 weeks. Incompetent staff who never followed directions. When I went to pick up my mother she had on someone else's clothes, nothing was ready and her walker was in a closet somewhere. The staff is lazy and incompetent and they are not accountable or being tracked by managements. Would not recommend to anyone. Had to go every day to check and every visit they didn't follow directions.. didn't have her walker near the bed and told them multiple times, washed her clothes after I stated that we will wash them, physical therapy comes at night and worse of all they updated the chart and lied about wha they did. Sunnyside is a very professionally run establishment. My mother received excellent care while she was there. This is the only nursing home where my mom's condition actually improved while she was there. My complaint is that they group English speaking and other languages together, 3 to a room, with only one very loud TV. I could not visit my mom in her room because the foreign chatter from the TV was overwhelming. My mom and both had to wear ear plugs while in her room. read more

My husband was at Torrance Memorial being discharged to go back to Sunnyside, but before he left the hospital instructed him to keep his feet levelvated and charged him through his insurance two leaning pillows..meaning these pillows are now his. They transported him to Sunnyside by the next day, due to Covid It took A couple of days for me to visit him; and I was cleared to, his pillows were gone..I asked the nurses and they said it was in the closet in his room..nope. not there. Then when he got home, he received a bill of service $200.00 I sent in $100.00 but I am charging them $100.00 for the missing pillows..2 years later they now want to put my husband under collection of the $100.00.. So folks keep track of your person's equipment and important items while there. read more

I felt compelled to write a review to express our gratitude to the CNAs, LvNs and RNs and Physical therapy department.Our mother who is 97, almost 98 , spent 5 weeks at Sunnyside, and our family was there everyday, sometimes 8am to 8pm, in the 200 and 300 wing. We were able to see 10 call buttons going on and the nurses hustling to get them all answered while doing the other jobs of bathing, feeding, monitoring and administering medication. What impressed us the most was the care and kindness given to the patients. We all know the elderly have many stories to tell, my mother being one, and they would listen, really listen. There was not one time I saw the staff slouching off or not doing their jobs. The physical therapy department is no different than what I just described. They would cheer on the patient, not give up the ability to progress and commend the improvement. And Kaiser Doctor, Doctor Turner, is by far the kindest and most thorough doctor you could ask for. The ONLY reason I gave this a four star rating is because administration needs to acknowledge the work that team does and hire more staffing so they don't burn out the staff they currently have. The sign outside says "Heroes work here." It should read "unsung heroes work here" for the incredible work this team does. Thank you times ten to all of you! read more

This location is alright with me so far. I say so far because my loved one hasn't been there long but she speaks very well of the services given to her. Although it takes a bit, I really appreciate the covid precautions that are followed. It gives me confidence that my loved one is safe from any virus that can be taken in from other visitors. I also appreciate how much parking is available to visitors. Not to say that there would always be an available about seeing that this home holds 299 beds. The rooms are clean they a bit old fashion with the use of wallpaper on the walls. The affairs l staff appeared pretty helpful and the ones that aided my loved one directly seemed very happy to be at work. That really put me at ease. They have movie and game nights as well. Really cool. The only downside that I didn't appreciate to much is the lack of direction when it comes to locating a room. I was looking for the signs that are normally posted (ie Rooms 100-150 or 201-222) instead a small paper size directive was posted that caused me to have to search for a nearby room number to locate where I was standing and where I needed to go. read more

Sunnyside offers post-op rehab/PT; I've been here 2x for PT. The PT Department is 4-star (a little close to 3.6 and worse than last time) but every other department is mediocre. I only chose Sunnyside for PT. Kaiser kept me at the hospital until it was predominately safe, given that I had complications and not a strong suit here. I saw 2 PTs from last time and pretty much saw the same one that patients call "the general." You have to experience it, but that will be your impression. I had 2 afternoon ones- Vincent, per diem and there the last time, and Lucky. They were all good and pretty much on time the same each day. The food is terrible! Don't eat it! I eat poultry, fish, and tofu. But I eat with seasoning only, any "gravy" on the side, too much sugar. Everything is way overcooked and dry and hard. Almost everything else was from a can. Being your own!! I ate egg whites every day and half was wasted. Asked for low sodium salt seasoning or a bit of ketchup, never got it. Glad I saved extras from the hospital. Asked for no beef or pork. Guess they don't know that meatloaf, bacon, ham fall in the category. Salads come with no dressing but you get sugar with hot water (i had to have teabags from home because they ran out of all tea decaf and only had regular caffeinated Lipton. The only fresh fruit is watermelon. They also have a fruit cup but it's tiny. All else is canned. Veggies frozen but passable. Don't expect meds on time. At night, don't expect anyone that answers your call button at all (11 pm - 7 am). But you can hear laughter and jokes. Mine took over 1-1/2 hours at 3 am. Also, had 3 patients in my room one super nice, wonderful friends and family (who never allowed her to sleep, texted to tell her to answer her phone and wake ups for meds, food, vitals, blood tests)!! So nice she waited until someone helped me and I asked to check her. The other needed a psychiatrist. She asked us to get blankets or close windows or move her , refused to use button but had no problem interfering and interrupting the nurse with our cqre. She was the "only patient there." Her granddaughter warned us that she needs lots of attention. She'd yell out the door and not use button. She'd ask electrician, maintenance, caseworker, case management who was not hers! I did find that 1 nurse who was super (3pm-11pm) who took over my meds whether on my room or not. I kept names so I will send thanks to them. So important! They also read more

Quan was a total love she was so kind she worked so hard to care for our every need. The Nursing staff was excellent and Angela was the best CNA ever she was on top of her game. everyone worked so hard for us and took such great care of us. My dad suffered from a stroke and had a few weeks of therapy at Sunnyside Nursing Center he really enjoyed his stay there. The social worker Dree and the staff that worked with and around her was AMAZING very helpful I can honestly say they went above and beyond for my dad and our family. This experience wasn't easy for our family since we didn't reside in the state although we visited during his stay it was hard to leave but after being present in the facility it made it easier because everyone that worked with him in therapy,nurses,nursing assistants,social workers we were able to feel confident that our dad was in good hands. (Part 1) How do you explain learning to re-stand & re-walk after being off your feet for several months? When your immediate life threatening challenges have been addressed, you're advised to utilize rehabilitation. Thankfully I have a wonderful supportive family who insisted on Sunnyside Post Acute Nursing Facility in Torrance, CA. I was not receptive to any facility, however my sister was insistent. I'm so happy, now, that she was!!! Not only was I NPO & lethargic when I initially arrived, I was so depressed at the different surroundings. But the doctors & nursing staff were so caring, friendly & patient with me, I couldn't be depressed for long. (end of part 1) Part 2 This is such an intriguing way to share the professionalism & absolute attention to detail, compassion & individual care that I have received at Sunnyside. I've learned so much between my transfer from acute care (at Kaiser Permanente) to the very good sub-acute care at Sunnyside. So much of an eye-opening transformation which really benefited my healing process. I learned that being on NPO status (from the Latin, "nil per os") means nothing by mouth ... & I emphasize NOTHING! Your doctor authorizes this status to minimize negative factors entering your body until your healing process has significantly strengthened you to return to eating & drinking a specified dietary plan. This assists in your overall healing. You still receive nutritional feedings & water, just not orally. I was on NPO status from having undergone a tracheotomy procedure. Breathing, with the help of a ventilator was a huge blessing (after waking up daily, thank God). I definitely was not as hungry for food, especially drive thru, fast food, as I was to be able to breathe on my own again. * end of part 2 read more
