Trying to use satellites to connect to one of my other phone. 4.6.2026, My Monday evening observation on this library. The male librarian is very helpful when I want to ask him on how to make a copy. The female old librarian is gossiping about Asian people and making fun at them. The young teenager is making fun at the Asian populations. Other people are gossiping about other person's life after 4pm. In general, the quality of the people who come to this library are better during the morning , but the quality of the people are getting worse as the day goes by, especially during the evening hours. read more

Enjoy every sandwich---Warren Zevon I went here with my beloved on a day trip to Sunnyvale. We both love libraries and books. Solid library. We eventually each found some good reads to enjoy. Delightful statue of someone enjoying a book and a sandwich as you walk in. Libraries in NoCal and especially the Bay Area are different than libraries in other parts of Turtle Island aka America for example you can check out 100 physical items here including books, CDs, DVDs, etc, no overdue fines for items returned late, and charges aka fines for lost or damaged items. We each found some diamonds aka gems aka amazing reads here. Knowledge is power. Take advantage of your local library. By the way despite the library's liberal loan policy I am personally working on checking out fewer items to enjoy quality over quantity as might be hard to digest 100 items unless you are a full time scholar par excellence who has mastered the art of speed reading yet I prefer slow reading and hot drinks aka herbal tea in the Winter season. read more

One time, at the Sunnyvale Public Library, I got a library card. The library card has many benefits to it. One of those benefits is access to online videos. Many of those videos are more than PG-13 rated. As a taxpayer, I have many questions about that. For some reason, I relate that to how rudely I tend to get treated at this location. The library as you've never seen it before! Library building reopened April 13, 2021 and open Tuesday-Saturday 1pm-6pm. Age of pandemic means minimizing the amount of staying indoors in public settings. Limit 30 minutes and 50 visitors at a time, but nobody's counting. Gone are the days when you could stay on the library PCs for hours, or cozy up in a padded chair in the library lounge, as the library PCs are shut down, and no chairs in the library lounge. In fact there are no chairs anywhere, except for the library staff behind their desks. No tables either, except for tables in the fiction section filled with new books lined up alphabetically by author. Saves staff the trouble of stacking on the shelves hundreds of new titles published when the library was closed during the pandemic. No chairs and no tables means masked visitors can social distance. You're browsing for books, checking out books, and getting out of Dodge. If you're staying more than 30 minutes, you're going to have to do it standing up. Lack of chairs cuts down on homeless folks using the library as a shelter. Now, if they closed the bathrooms, that would really cut down on the homeless using this place to wash themselves in the sinks, and women taking their children to the bathroom. The place looks huge without the chairs and tables, enough room to play soccer indoors. Just make sure you're wearing masks! There's a statue outside usually with a mask over the face, but someone forgot his mask and used the statue's mask! read more

Sunnyvale Public Library is a magical place! Some may think it's a bit small, but it's mighty! Definitely take advantage of all the great resources! Do you know any library that lets you check out a cookie making kit? How cool is that? We love coming multiple times a week for story times and other library events! Lots of engaging activities throughout the year! Our favorite is the Mighty Beginnings program for the little ones that went on from April 2019 to December 2019! Thank you to all the staff for making this program possible, especially Wendy & Rayna! We absolutely loved it! Hope this program will continue to run in the future!! We also love the seasonal reading programs! We got lots of free books as prizes! The staff is SUPER friendly once you get to know them! It's a decent library as far as being able to get books but there are things about it that are bugging me more and more. They're allowing several homeless people to set up tents on library grounds, without seeming to do anything about it. Also the heat inside is cranked up way too high. I've literally almost fainted before, just being inside the library for like 20 minutes. My kids like the Early Learning Center so they'd probably rate the library higher than I would. read more

Check out Yelp for new library hours as they are updated! I needed a place to study for an exam- so what better place then at the library? This is actually my first time coming here and I love how spacious it was with designated quiet areas ands lots of plugs to charge your devices. At the very back of the library, there's an area where you face a brick wall where I was able to focus on the work I needed do to. This is my preference over the tables because I get easily distracted if there's too many movement going on around me. There's also lots of tables if you do not need to be near a plug. I think the best part of this library is that they are open late (9pm). Most libraries close at 6pm so this is the spot for you if you do not want cut your study session short because of timing. There are many "Do not leave valuables unattended" signs all over but if your neighbor is nice they might be willing to look over your things while you use the bathroom. If I am around this area, I'll sure be coming here to study. read more

Okay, I've got to update my review to give a shoutout to all the hardworking library staff who have come up with a great way to keep us reading during this prolonged Covid-19 debacle. Since going into a library and communing with a bunch of other people putting their hands on dozens of books is presently not an option, you can request a grab bag of books from any one of about two dozen different categories. These books have been thoughtfully selected by the librarians, and then you arrange for a time to pick it up. It's a smooth and seamless process, and when you're done with the books you can easily drop them off and pick up another bag. Yes, it does take just a little bit of planning ahead, but it's really a minor thing given everything else going on in the world. Keep up the great work, and thank you so much! read more

Whenever I move to a new city I seek out the library and sign up for a library card as soon as possible. All you need is proof of address. I called over the phone to ask if I could use a picture of my lease and was told it was fine. I came in, stood in line, and got my library card in 5 minutes - easy peasy. The library's layout is still a little confusing to me, even after a few visits. They have quiet areas but I see they're not always enforced. Some lady walked through the entire library loudly speaking on the phone and sat in the quiet area while still doing so. It's not a small library, but it's not that big either. It's located in a nice area though, very scenic. read more

I love this library and I love that they're open again. (Monday to Friday, 1-6pm!) I'm very thankful to their very helpful and friendly staff! They currently have sidewalk service, with proper social distancing- there are 6ft away markers on the ground and everybody wears masks. You stand in line and wait your turn, scan your card, they'll confirm your books for pick up (I just request books online) and you'll be asked to wait off to the side until someone calls your name and you'll receive your books in a paper bag. There are bins by the sides for dropping off books/returns and book donations. I also already have a library card but if you don't have one you can request one there, too. They've also recently updated their website and it's way nicer now and more interactive. It's got an extra Goodreads feel to it because you can now make lists, rate books, write reviews. Pro tip: You can call ahead before picking up your books to ensure minimal wait time (but I've never really had to wait that long and I usually go when I'm not in a hurry). Also, their summer reading challenge is online now, too! It goes until the end of August! :) read more

I'm determined to go to the library more often now since it's so conveniently located to my current apartment and its a great space to get work done, read some books and just watch kids run around (okay, maybe hold off on the last part). Parking: spacious! However, the last two rows in the very very back is for Library staff. The front is usually packed, but keep driving towards the back where there is plenty of spaces. Hours: Just FYI, on Sundays they open at noon. When I arrived at 2pm, it was PACKED! I am very impressed. I do recommend going on their online catalog to see if the book you want is in shelf. If not, don't be like me and come unprepared and angry at the world. It's close to residential area so its very quiet. However, once you turn out onto the main street, you're super close to Murphy Ave to grab some grub for your fried brain and hungry soul (if you're still not satisfied from your books). read more

After five years, it's time for another update. SPL is far from perfect. It's not nearly as big and up-to-date as, let's say, Mountain View and Cupertino Public Libraries. As a matter of fact, the building and floor plan are pretty much exactly the same as they were 20 years ago. That said, it's still worth it to come here if you're looking for what one would typically seek from a library. Whether it's books, magazines, movies, etc that you wish to borrow, or you're in need of a quiet place to study, or you need to use the internet, etc., SPL has you covered. Facts: * Plenty of items of every category that you would find in a library: books, magazines, movies, etc. * They have many computers for you to use to surf the net and whatnot. * They have a printing/copying area for your printing/copying needs. (Not sure of their rates though.) * Plenty of parking -- massive parking lot and adequate street parking * Seamless processes for borrowing and returning items * If there's a heat wave going on, they have A/C and they stay open late to allow people to have a place to chill in the hot weather. * On the other hand, when it's cold out, they have heaters and fireplaces to keep you warm. * You can donate materials pretty easily as well. Just tell them at the front desk area that you have stuff to donate and they'll give you a receipt for your convenience if you choose. Despite its age, this library has been well taken care of ever since I first started to come by years ago. The one significant drawback is that there can be some homeless and/or seedy people who hang around the library all the time. Thankfully, they don't accost anybody and generally keep to themselves. I'm bumped I didn't know about this library after moving to the area this whole year! After graduating from college in spring 2021, I almost stopped learning because my time is solely occupied by working and personal life. My goal for 2023 is to learn by reading a bit more for fun, but don't want to spend money on buying books for them to just collect dust after the read. The library came to mind and I'm so glad I'm choosing to come here to achieve my goal! I was helped by 2 amazing receptionists with signing up for the membership and looking for a book of interest. I think one thing that makes this a 4-star review is because it's pretty stuffy in there and smells a bit off, but other than that I'm excited to be a part of this library! read more

Finally got a library card after living in Sunnyvale for a few years. The young gentleman helping me with my new card was efficient, proficient at typing, and nice. No small talk, which I appreciate. So many new book choices in several genres made it difficult to select two to three books for weekend and evening entertainment. The checkout system was a breeze and very intuitive. Scan card barcode, enter your 4-8 digit PIN code and then put your stack of books in for scanning. Checkout machine scans them all at once. I'm glad the library was open late as I work late most days. Just wish the parking area was better lit. It's difficult to see my surroundings in the orange lighting and it's not easy to see if it's clear of pedestrians behind or near the back of the car before backing out. It's true, there are many creepers that hang out here which is quite a scare for the younger kids who aren't always aware of their surroundings. It's good to know that the Sunnyvale Police station is just right across the street. I have noticed some improvements since the last time I stopped by. They have a few self check-out stands which are super convenient for those on the go. I also love the fact that I can reserve what I need via online and have it all ready to be picked up (on the shelves-alphabetically organized by your last name) within 24 hrs. Plenty of parking at the Sunnyvale Public Library! Once you're inside, everything is clearly marked. BIG plus. Lots and lots of space for lounging, reading newspapers, and my favorite thing to do in libraries...STUDY STUDY STUDY! Wifi is free and flows fast, but that means it's not as secure. I saw a lot of older people in the newspaper section since I was in the "QUIET AREA" at the far end of the library. I didn't see as many kids as I thought I would have, but they have their own area...as do the teens. There seems to be a huge section in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Hindi since Sunnyvale caters to specific populations. Restrooms are clean and right at the entrance! I love that they have lots of outdoor table seating, but computer folk...your best bet is indoors because that's where the outlets are. When I was there last Thursday night almost until closing, I also observed a few stale-smelling hobos pacing around in the library. Reminded me of good old college days. read more

One of the happiest moments of my life was when I officially received my public library card. The Sunnyvale Public library is overflowing with books (of course), magazines and videos. Hidden somewhere in downtown Sunnyvale, you probably would need to Google the address first OR just follow the street markers by Mathilda or by El Camino Real. It's worth the search, though. Find the genre you like through their computer database located right at the heart of the entrance, near the service counter. Then proceed to the shelves (lots of them) deeper into the building. Finding the books is easy, just be very quiet when walking through the aisles because there's tables right next to the shelves where people would be doing some reading. Their books are well-maintained and clean. They have books for take-out and same title books intended for just reading in. Make sure you borrow the book that's for take-out to save you time. Cannot say anything about their videos as I have not borrowed any... Checking the books/materials out is also easy. You may borrow as many as you like. Don't forget your password BTW...and that will be your birthday. Scan your library card, put the books (all of them that can fit under) under the scanner and you're checked out. Easy-peasy. After 2 weeks, you return the books. Before the due date, you'll receive an e-mail reminder. If you're not done reading the books you borrowed, you can renew online or through telephone. Just be sure you know where to locate the books' serial number. When you're ready to return, you may do so at any time of the day, not necessarily in the library. They have a quick return booth on the right side of the entrance. Scan your card and slip the books inside the conveyor one at a time. Staff in the library are also very friendly and knowledgeable. Man... this public library is the most FRIENDLIEST I've ever been to in the Bay Area. And believe me - I have been to many and this one is #1 on my list! The San Mateo one where I live doesn't even come close to customer service and it was redesigned recently too! The first thing you will noticed about the Sunnyvale Public Library -- the plentiful private and street parking. It is also located not far from the City Hall and other federal and state offices are within walking distance. As soon as you come in, to your left is the customer service with wonderful friendly staff to serve you. They are the best and can help you find almost everything. They are also very well informed with just about any subject matter and can direct you to a quick route to find your book! They have plenty of computers throughout the library for quick access, and if there is a book you can't find, you can request to have it sent to your nearest library or mailed to them - and they will send you an email or phone call when it becomes available. There is also a huge space for children to read, sit and story telling! This is great for day trips for teachers to expose children how to access information in a public library. I think it is also another option to help children "chill" and encourage them to read! The next time you are in Sunnyvale and you need extensive research that sometimes "google" is not able to provide you online - come by and visit the Sunnyvale Public Library! God, I'm such a nerd, but this was my most favorite place in the whole wide world as a little kid. I went to all the story times and listened to "Dial-A-Story" (aka "Shouldn't You Be Trying to Make Out Scrambled Cinemax Like Normal Kids Instead?") and borrowed as many books as my skinny little arms could carry which made random adults ooh and ah over my adorable little ass when really it just bugged the hell out of me that these cows were only patronizing me and my nerdy glasses. Nevertheless, I discovered so many dirty, dirty romance novels here, and my world was never the same. Thank you, parental tax dollars, for giving me the only sex education that was truly worthwhile (thrusting manroot and all). This review is for the kidspace only. Moving from Seattle (my baby loved Seattle library storytime) we were excited to visit Sunnyvale library for storytime as well. Unfortunately it was very disappointing and not interactive enough for the kids. They had about 40 people in a room and a lady playing songs on the tape. Maybe they should let a experienced person host this because the person reading the books to kids looked least interested in it. Also since this a old library, kids hardly have any play space! It's like a small corner with a play mat and 3 wall toys. I hope the city of Sunnyvale plans to revamp the library and make it more desirable. read more

I love this place! I found a ton of older CDs from some of my all time favorite artists to burn, errrrrr listen to! ;-) They even have Audio Books! While driving my commute/traffic, I like to listen to them. Rich Dad, Poor Dad collection, David Bach "Automatic Millionaire" collection, and Basic Tagalog language programs! After renewing my expired membership card, I was happy to find the state of the art check out and return kiosks! What a difference from the days of waiting in line, QUIETLY...and checking out your books from a staff person. You can simply scan your card, stack 4-5 things and then ZAP, a red laser light scans everything at once! It was a bit confusing at first, but it's totally rad!!! TIPS: Bring you own reusable bag to carry your books, CDs, and DVDs in. To join: All you have to do to be a member is live in the Santa Clara County and show a utility bill as proof. This is our go-to library in the Silicon Valley area. Although we live closer to other libraries, this one is a nice size with a great selection of all genres. They have sections that are posted "Quiet Area" so you can read or study in peace. There are lots of tables and seats with proper spacing to allow for social distancing. One disadvantage: you have to park and walk a bit to return materials. A drive-up book return, or even one closer to the parking lot, would be nice. read more

Wish I could have given a 4.5. Love this place. Have all kinds of options, quite-area, not-so-quite-area. Comfy-chairs, not-so-comfy-chairs and couches. Kids area, teen area and adult sections. The movie collection is good too. The study tables don't have charging points (Cupertino library does), only the spots facing the wall have charging points. (Although you can ask the staff for a borrow-able portable charger at the front desk) They have quite a few computers for clients to use and some catalog search stations too. There help available for research and IT both. What I like most is the Jig-saw puzzle table, feel like taking a break? Go to the play table and solve a 1000 piece jigsaw!! A library that's just okay. I studied here often during high school for SAT's, AP tests, and I even had a field trip sometime in grade school. Pros: + The CD selection is wonderful (there's quite a selection of new albums available). + New titles in books (NY Times Bestsellers) + Hold system is free and convenient. + DVD section has new titles; up to one week borrowing time for recent films. +Automated borrowing (Can borrow 3-4 books at once without individually scanning them!) +Fast, wi-fi! Cons: -One thing that really bothers me about this library is the smell. There's this old books/moldy unpleasant smell. Maybe it's the brick buildings or the furniture, I don't know. But a little bit of air flow to neutralize the smell of the library would be lovely. -Crowded. Recently it's become competition to get a seat in the library. This wasn't so much the case a couple of years ago. -The returning system/machine (very slow, and can only handle one book/dvd/whatever library material at once). read more

To be frank, the building is actually rather ugly, but it is the inside that counts, for the most part. In fact, it's quite large, perhaps larger than you would expect and it also has some surprising features, such as a blu-ray section! It's not particularly deep, which is unsurprising (although if you look at the catalog for a while, you'll realize how many discs have been stolen, which is galling) but they do continue to get new discs very soon after they come out! If you're really committed and have a flexible schedule (I only occasionally match these descriptors) you will come to recognize when the best times are to actually find a wider range of selection). Also, you can only place holds on "non-feature" DVDs or blu-rays, meaning in practice mostly TV shows and documentaries. So it really is a crapshoot if you're looking for a film. I think they should just limit how many each person can get (I've seen one guy come in and just grab half of the section, swooping up such a wide variety of genres that you really can't believe he's actually interested in all of them) instead, but what do I know. (in fact the limit is 10 features, regardless of format). There, have been some cutbacks, specifically it's now closed at 6 on Thursday, but this is nothing compared to the Santa Clara library, which despite being very close to my house, is a library I can only visit on weekends as I get off too late to go there the rest of the time! So, obviously, I do appreciate their hours quite a bit. The novelty of the auto-return system has worn off a little bit, but although it does break some, they've been on a roll lately and I think it's a better system than most in the area. Also, after continually having to call Chicago library workers (when I lived there) to inform them that yes, I had in fact returned that book, I am more than happy to have a screen confirm that fact for me on the spot (not sure why people think a receipt is necessary, though). Oh, and in case you were wondering, if you fall asleep in here the librarian will come and chastise you! Pretty funny actually. read more

# Why I like this library? - Excellent books collection with latest magazines. - There are different categories of study areas like teens room, three big open study rooms, quiet room, near-the-wall study tables and so on. - Technology section, offers computers in good conditions, as I can see the area always super busy. - To the left of the entrance, there are many impressive books, which are sold just for $2s, $3 etc. Worth buying for sure! - Free Wi-Fi is quick to sign in and very efficient. - Librarian, Volunteers, other staff - ALL are well-attentive, have a positive attitude in clarifying any question with patience. They're helpful! - Find latest magazines of the business world in the quiet room. - I like their book racks, very easy to spot your favorite or even for the ones you randomly choose. - This library has great reading chairs and tables. They're comfortable, helps to stay focused in your studying/reading targets/ other learning commitments. Specifically those seating furniture in the teen area are cute, colorful and even adults can use them anytime I guess. I've used them during non-peak hours. - Their old newspaper lockers are quite interesting! - Hope to use them sometime in the future. - There are two restrooms, one to the right of the entrance and the other near the quiet area, which stinks pretty bad. And so the one in the entrance section is manageable. - Books return alerts are effective and in person procedure to return your book is non-cumbersome. - Expect decently packed parking area. You need to go around once or twice to find a good spot. All in all, I like the big-cute signage inside, to the right of the entrance. Love nature's blessing at this location. Lots of tall trees, gives me a pleasant vibe all the time. Separate bike parking area is a plus. A lot of books, resources, and educational material but it feels a bit outdated compared to mountain view. Story time is very popular at 11am, and there's so many mom's and kids in the rec room that you feel a little bit claustrophobic being there. Kids area is always busy with kids, mom's, and nannies. Or just people who sit around while the kids play with toys. I stopped by to do some research on what children enjoy reading from specific ages, when I noticed how many people don't work in sunnyvale during the day! Aren't they lucky ducks? read more

They now have self automated check out machines for your borrowed materials.Unlike the new giant library in san jose,parking here is always free. I wish I had not bought so many books in the past,I've found out the hard way it's better to borrow a book from the library instead of buying a book that may never get read or if it does only get read once then have it sit around collecting dust forever.I recomend this place to anyone who lives in the area. read more

I really do like this library but it's definitely due for renovation. The staff is remarkably kind and willing to always help. The print/copy area (from the on-site computers) is convenient and well priced. 0.15 cents for black and white and 0.50 cents for color - however don't expect an incredible printing job. PROS: - Tons of computers - Excellent staff - Large book selections - 24hr book return outside - Majority of the time it's quiet - Pretty neat print&copy center - Chargers for your phone at the desk - A landmark place in Sunnyvale CONS: - Older, dusty and aged - Print jobs/paper = cheap quality - A few designated quiet areas but not enforced enough - BATHROOMS are always "nasty" I do love the section for quiet area - although I wish the entire library was quieter (they do not "strictly enforce" it either, unless a patron "tattles" on someone, which surprised me). The computers are plentiful and the location for book-findings is super easy. Also, I didn't know I could call in and ask for an extension on my books! Yes they will do this for you only if no one has it on reserve. Overall, it's definitely older - I do wish to see a "facelift" soon. But all in all, it's very cozy and relaxing. read more

Compared to other libraries in the surrounding area, like Mountain View & Santa Clara (off Homestead) this library is a good go-to if you're closer to it. For the most part, it has all the great conveniences of surrounding libraries, like free wi-fi, easy check-out processes and lots to choose from. it also has a pretty awesome collection of CDs. But it's old. I know, I shouldn't knock it. But there's classy old, like 18-early 19 century colonial oldish and then there's straight up from the 70s old, brick & mortar, blockish, brutalist-ish style which this place is like. It definitely doesn't have the warmest feel to it, but if that doesn't bother you, then no worries! You'll get everything you need right here. read more
