February 9, 2023 Sunset Funeral Home Rating : I realize that most rating systems only go up to 5 stars but Chris and the staff of Sunset Funeral Home was extremely good that they deserve the 6 stars. Chris, the manager, was very amicable , supportive and professional with us. His understanding and sympathy of the traumatic event of losing our mother made it easier to deal and handle with making the arrangements for our mother. He was able to accommodate us with a good plan for our mother's services. The staff there was very kind, friendly, professional and very helpful. They were very patient with us and Chris and his staff were all very informative and supportive. They helped us get our video and music working for the visitation service. Their chapel was beautifully decorated well prepared for the visitation service. The funeral mass service at St. Patrick's Cathedral was live streamed and was beautiful. Cantors were part of this service and the music chosen was excellent, very appropriate and beautiful. Chris and the staff at the west side location went what I would consider beyond their normal services. They assisted as pallbearers. They called us periodically to check on our well-being. They delivered items to the house on numerous occasions when I could've easily picked them up. Many extra services like this were not only appreciated but very welcomed. The website service they provided before, during and after the service was professionally designed taking into consideration and recognizing that they are dealing with the grief of family and friends. It was a beautiful memorial to our mother. They worked with our family in such a way that they felt like good friends making an extra effort to take care of our needs. They are a wonderful group of people. If you're in the situation as we were, I would not hesitate to highly recommend them. God Bless. read more

Do not use this funeral home. They get sucked into family drama. My mom was married to a man who had six figures in gambling debt when she died. Thus she left most of her money to me, her daughter, and some to her granddaughter. This upset her husband and he has gone around bad mouthing me to anyone who would listen, including throwing a tantrum during her actual funeral, and the funeral home got sucked into this. Even though my sister, the other daughter of the deceased, paid for the funeral and cremation (I reimbursed her for half privately), Sunset Funeral Home insisted on giving him all of the ashes and all 5 of the death certificates. Part of the arrangements for the ashes was that my niece, the daughter of the sister who used her credit card to pay for the funeral, was supposed to receive a Hummingbird necklace with some of her grandmother's ashes in it. Since they gave my mother's husband all of the ashes, he took the necklace, and told my brother-in-law he was going to keep it and not give it back. Again, he didn't pay for anything. He was just being spiteful because he was financially cut off and Sunset Funeral Home 100% enabled this. The only ashes the family got as a small box the husband was not able to carry out because he requires a walker. He couldn't use the walker, carry the larger urn and the smaller box of ashes at the same time so he left it and my brother-in-law got it. But my nieces necklace he was able to get into his pocket, so he took it. Even more inappropriately, ever since then, despite the heartbreak this man has caused our family, Sunset Funeral Home calls my sister to express their concern for him and ask if he's okay. This is after he stole the necklace she paid for for her daughter. If they are so concerned for him, I don't know why they don't reach out to him directly instead of harassing us. Also, because of the actions of Sunset Funeral Home, my mother's final wishes were not able to be carried out. Her final wishes were to be cremated and have her ashes taken somewhere specific. But because they gave the ashes to the husband, he buried them on Ft. Bliss as he is retired from the military. My mother was 70 years old when she died. She had only known her husband for five years in total and they were not even married for the total of those five years. These were not her final wishes. Not to mention, my mother was wife number eight for this man. None of his other wives are being buried with him. There is not enough space in that cemetery. He did that just to spite our family. I lost my 2 month old nephew. My sister and her husband had me make all the arrangements for them. I called and first talked a Chris he gave me a quote and I said thank I will call back when I speak with my family. I called back later in the day left a message no return call. Ok that's fine. Waited 48hrs and called again left another message. Went in person and he wasn't available. I left my business card and still no response. My sister called also and still nothing. We wanted to go to this particular location because it was close to our church. We decided to go to the location on North Carolina and so glad we did. Don't come to N. Ressler they are very unprofessional. Go to the location at North Carolina talk with Brenda. They are so professional, kind, respectful and thought of everything before we asked. read more

Sunset Funeral Homes West and its staff are excellent. The kindness and compassion I receive at one of the most dreadful moments in my life were extraordinary. They worked tirelessly to accommodate my family and me. They never tried to upsell or take advantage of us. We made last-minute changes and allowed us to grieve and allowed us time to say our final goodbyes to our brother. I heartily recommend their services. The location is stunning, the staff and directors are kind and knowledgeable and compassionate. My extended family recently had a service at Sunset Funeral Homes on North Resler. There were several problems leading up to, and during the service. 1. A member of my family put together a wonderful tribute to our loved one who had passed away; I subsequently burned the .mp4 file to a DVD. It was then taken by another family member to Sunset the day before the funeral. They told us that the file would not play on what they told us was a "brand new" system. One of the employees there then proceeded to tell us that it needed to be in Movie Maker file format, and that .mp4 files are very rare and only for Mac's. First of all, Movie Maker is a Windows OS program that converts video files to a .wmv OR .mp4 file format. After a lot of research, what I believe he meant was we needed to use DVD Maker, which was built into Windows prior to Windows 8. I resolved the issue, and took the tribute to Sunset at 8:15 am the morning of the service (which was set for 10:00 am). The same employee we had dealt with the day before took it to the back, and I could hear the music from the tribute playing over the entire speaker system. He assured me it was playing properly and I counted my blessings, left, and went to help prepare the last of the food for the reception after the service. Upon arriving at 9:40 am, the DVD was not playing in the chapel, and we were told after much pestering that they were "working on it". Another member of the family said the DVD had been working when he got there, but then stopped. I went with the creator of the tribute to the office to ask for an explanation; the funeral director told us that his "best IT guy" was working on it, and they would do their best to "accommodate us" in what I considered to be a very dismissive and arrogant manner. They did not come update us with their progress, and finally one of the other employees said that it was a problem with a DVD player and they were swapping it out so it would work. Fifteen minutes later (and five minutes after the service was set to begin) they finally got it to work. 2. Other than coming up to the front of the chapel to state that the service was going to begin, none of the employees from the funeral home were present during the service (except to put out flowers that were being delivered late, see below), and no one directed the service at the end to tell people when the graveside service would be or where the family would be receiving. It was up to a very choked up grandfather to get back up AFTER delivering his eulogy to tell people where to go and when the graveside service would be. That is a responsibility of the funeral director, not a distraught family member. 3. The funeral director informed my mother that the florist was lying to her about the time when the flowers were supposed to be delivered and that was the reason they were delivered more than halfway through the service (along with everyone else's, apparently.) My mother, upset about the arrangement not being there, spoke with an employee at Sunset to ask why they weren't out in the chapel. She was informed they hadn't arrived. She calls the florist, who tells her that the funeral home told them the service was at 11 am, and the delivery man was on his way. She repeats this to the funeral director, who tells my mother flat out that they florist is LYING and that they told everyone the correct time. Throughout the first half of the service, the side door had to keep being opened so flowers and stands could be set out near the casket. 4. The provided clergyman was not prepped for the service, often rambled, and even had to be instructed on the pronunciation of the deceased's first name. Again, this was the clergy PROVIDED by Sunset. 5. The level of apathy towards my family was appalling. Every problem we encountered had a solution. The employees never once went out of their way to help us find that solution, try and resolve it themselves WITHOUT one of my family members making a big fuss about it. It was only an afterthought that they told us they could burn the DVD for us so it would work on their system. They never offered to call the florist. They didn't even greet and escort the mourners! They simply said, "Are you here for X?" and pointed us at the chapel. They didn't offer us the prayer cards or tell us there was a sign in book, or a basket for cards (They also never called the deceased by her first name, as I think they had no idea how to pronounce it - but they never asked, either). This funeral home was chosen because they were cheap. If you only care about having a service, not even a mediocre one, and you don't care about being treated with respect, empathy, and compassion during a very hard time, then by all means, go to Sunset Funeral Homes. If you want a funeral home that treats you right, makes sure everything is arranged beautifully and makes it as smooth as possible, go to Martins. read more
