A billion stars! I reviewed Sunset Lakes Animal Clinic some time ago, but I want to give another billion stars to Dr. Schooley because of a recent event: my dog, who has underlining conditions, was acting weird, having trouble breathing, and appeared to be almost lifeless. Because it was late at night, I took him to a nearby, all-night emergency facility. Although my dog and I were treated kindly, and a lot of tests were run, the facility couldn't figure out the problem. I took him to Dr. Schooley the next day and, without a moment's hesitation, she knew that his symptoms were the result of a medication that he was taking. (The emergency place had been advised he was taking that medication.) He was taken off the med, and immediately improved. IT WAS THAT SIMPLE (and inexpensive). This is why I love going to a seasoned, knowledgeable vet such as Mary Schooley. Years of experience and knowledge can often be much more valuable than lots of expensive tests and scans. Even though there are numerous vet clinics near to where I live, I travel almost an hour each way, in horrific traffic, to take my dog to Dr. Schooley. She's worth it! read more

I hate to give one star reviews to any business but this business deserves this. They are unprofessional and are constantly coming up with extra charges for your pet that is not warranted. The vet there is extremely rude, she makes you feel inferior if you try to ask questions for better understanding. I'm telling you she does not love animals she is in it for the money. Dr Schooley is professional, caring and knowledgeable. Her staff is always friendly and considerate, especially after the loss of a pet. We have been coming here for 3 years and all my pets are well-cared for by the staff at SLAC. It's conveniently located and reasonably priced. The offices are clean, some of the chairs are a little worn but animals will chew on things, and they answer all your questions without judgement. read more

Since 1986 Dr. Mary Schooley has been our veterinarian. Four dogs and 2 cats later, she continues to be the most compassionate, kind and knowledgeable person we have ever had the privilege to know. My husband and I have often said that we wish our own personal physicians were as caring as Dr. Schooley. What separates Dr. Schooley from previous vets we have known is that she truly loves the animals. We recently had to have our beloved 14 year old Terrier mix, Ally, put to sleep. Ally was the love of our lives. Dr. Schooley was so kind and loving to her (as she always was on any and all of our visits over 14 years) and allowed us time to be with our girl for as long as we needed. If you are a pet parent, you can imagine what that day was like. Dr. Schooley was such a comfort to us on that awful day and made sure our girl was comfortable and pain free. She is an excellent and dedicated veterinarian. We highly recommend Dr. Schooley and her entire caring staff. read more

I've been taking my beagle, Jasper, here for about 6 years. Jasper and I love Dr. Schooley. She is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. She'll tell you what your dog needs, but she doesn't judge you if you can't afford to do everything at once. For instance, she arranged my dog's dental care so that the labs and cleaning fell on separate month's credit card bills. She does a lot of the labs in house, so you can get answers about what is wrong quickly. But she's not reactionary; she doesn't order a million expensive tests at the first sign of trouble. Often she'll take a wait and see approach, like when my dog had a seizure. His labs were normal and he hasn't had one since. She gave us some literature at the time about poisonous frogs, but doesn't guarantee that was the problem. She warned us that since he's getting older, he may have a slowly progressing problem that just isn't obvious yet. I appreciate that she warned us, but also that she did not make us feel guilty for not ordering a bunch of diagnostic procedures. Medical care for animals is not cheap, but I like that Dr. Schooley doesn't expect me to sell my children to pay for my dog. Also the staff at Sunset Lakes has always friendly been friendly and polite and the clinic very clean. Now if only they would put a hook on the check-out counter to hold Jasper's leash when I was trying to pay my bill. read more

Horrible experience! Went in with a case of my dog being constipated and not peeing for 2 days. Dr said he had a tumor pressing on his organs that could not be operated (no xrays nor ultrasound) she gave me an estimate for a euthanasia. I went to another Hospital for a second opinion they did xrays and a ultrasound turns out he had bladder stones and needed surgery immediately. Just picked him up and he's doing better. I think you guys really need to be more responsible when it comes to a diagnostic like this. I mean how many pets have been euthanized based on just a physical exam? Only reason why I rate 1 star is because it won't let me post otherwise. read more

I recently moved here with two older dogs. One had not walked in almost a year. We had been trying to manage her care but she getting worse. Schooly was very hands-on and could tell right away what the problem was. She told me, "I don't want you spending your money here, I'm going to send you to someone who can help." She made an appointment right there with a specialist in Fort Lauderdale who was just what we needed. The specialist told us there was nothing that could be done for our immobile dog, she would never walk again. The dog was developing other health issues due to being bed-ridden. We ultimately decided to take her back to Schooley to have the dog euthanized. That same day our other dog was not looking so well. We took him in to Schooley. He was severely anemic and needed a blood transfusion. They have a blood donor right there in the office. He is a big 'ol German Shepherd named Hank. So we got some Hank-blood and our dog was looking great again. Schooley made an appointment to have an ultrasound for our dog to see why our dog had gotten so sick. The ultrasound tech met with us there. Our dog had a massive tumor wrapped around his spleen and other organs. Even with surgery, he wouldn't live more than a few months. He got sick two weeks later and was euthanized. Schooley was great, not only with us, but to my children as well. These kids had just lost both their dogs they had known there whole lives in just two weeks. Schooley was sweet and compassionate to them. She has like 6 kids of her own, so she has a lot of experience. Now we have two new dogs, one is an older puppy. I've had to bring her in a few times already because she is one hot mess. The pup had developed a huge lump on the top of her head. Schooley felt the pup's head and could tell she had chipped her skull. We didn't need to waste money on xrays. Strict cage-rest for puppy that we could do at home and meds. A few months later, same puppy ate a needle. Took an xray, saw the needle. Schooley advised bulking up her stool so pup could pass the needle without surgery. Took pup in a few days later for another xray, needle is gone. No surgery needed. Schooley is a good, 'ol country gal from Alabama with a bunch of kids and animals. She's honest and a straight talker. She's not going to try to confuse you with technical terms. She makes sure your family understands exactly whats going on with your furbabies. Last but definitely not least, Sunset Lakes animal hospital team is super. Do they ever sleep? They are always there. Katrina, the lady whose name always escapes me and Victor are always great with my family. read more

Awful. Worst vet I've ever encountered. Gave my dog antibiotics for $129 for an ear infection and then when I questioned the price said "what? you can't afford it?". Such a rude, rude woman. Before that had my dog neutered there and was quoted one price and then charged way more. Horrible business practices. read more

I cannot say enough about Dr. Schooley and her entire team at Sunset Lakes Animal Clinic. As a very nervous and uninformed first time dog owner, I took my new fur baby to Dr. Schooley after having a horrific experience with a different veterinary clinic. I was so upset with the care and customer service at the first clinic where my puppy was seen and prescribed some medication that my gut told me to get a second opinion and thankfully I listened! Dr. Schooley is exactly the type of veterinary I was seeking to care for my precious puppy. She and her staff provided the best care and detailed information for me on how to care for my puppy today and moving forward. She took her time with me and my puppy. She gave me valuable information on the care my puppy would need and tips on everything from potty training, teething, crate training, you name it she took the time to discuss it with me. Her staff member even called me two days after my appointment to ensure that my little fur baby was doing well and to find out if I had any follow-up questions. I am thrilled that my search for a dedicated, knowledgeable and caring vet is over because my puppy will forever be a patient of Dr. Schooley's! read more

HORRIBLE VET! The only reason I'm giving it a star Is because yelp makes you give a star. The guy at the front desk was amazing, he gave me a quote over the phone and answered all my questions that I had. We booked our appointment and upon getting there we find out that there was "scheduling conflict" and instead of her being really nice saying I'm sorry can we reschedule. She begins to yell at her employees in the back room and we can hear it. Come to find out the guy at the front desk is actually a Vet Tech filling in the receptionist job because she quit. The tension was horrible. We felt really bad for the guy at the front desk. The doctor was extremely rude and did not seem sincere about her apology at all. She just kept trying to get us to stay while explaining what here employees did wrong. So we just ended up leaving. We drive 30 minutes to get here and in 10 minutes we left very upset. read more

do not ever leave your dog boarding at this place! my dog was 14 years old and we left him boarding for two weeks at this horrible place, the biggest regret of my life!!!! all they would do was call us saying that our dog was dying, they would dramatize everything, saying he had cancer, then she would say he had a tumor, then she would tell us a different diagnose everytime!! when we would ask her what was happening exactly, she could never explain, the only thing she would say was that he was dying because he was already 14 years old! and desperate us saying that we had to give her 3 thousand dollars for a bunch of exams to do on him or else he would die! she would never give a diagnose! my dog was 14 years old and he required a special attention and care, he would only be fed when the food was near him since he was blind but other than that he was healthy, we took him to several other doctors and every dramatize diagnose she would give, was completely different from what the other doctors would give! this woman should be in jail!!!!!!!!!they take advantage of your emotional vulnerability with their absurd diagnoses to take money from you! and the worst thing is that i did not even care about how much i could give to save my dogs life, i would give the world for him and they took my best friends life! it hurst every single day to not even know till this day to what he has passed away! this woman deserves to have her vet license taken away! i cry every night before i sleep because of my regret of leaving him at this place! for the love of god, please dont take your pet at this place! read more

I'll give them a 2 star rating because the staff are often friendly to some degree and the place is clean. But the doctor is a serious RIP OFF!!!! (Dr. Scholley...or however her name is spelled) I'll give credit where credit it due and say that I believe for the most part that she knows what she is talking about when it comes to treatment and medicine's but BE AWARE she is more focused on money than on anything else. I have been talking my dog there for a couple years and just recently I became overly done and fed up with their over the top prices and wanting to charge for EVERY little thing. They show ZERO discretion, it really is "their way or the highway". I want to take my dog to a vet who is friendly and knowledgeable, has a clean place, but also is more interested in the well being of my dog than making a buck. Don't get me wrong, I'll spend whatever I have to on my pooch because I love her to death and I have the dough butttttt I will not take being taken advantage of.
