We went here soley for the reason it was the only place that had apples left in mid-October. Most places shut down picking early. Would this be my choice for an applepicking orchard in late September? Probably not. I am glad they open later in the season, even if the variety was not great the later you go ... something I won't faukt them for. When we went, it was mid/late October and the only two varieties left on the trees were small green apples, which were sweet. And what we think were McIntosh apples ... the tree labeling here truly is terrible. Sweet with a slightly tart flavour. We were bummed that there seemed to be no courtland apples for pies ... again, our fault for coming so late. The orchard itself is not what I'd call picturesque. Some of the Massachusetts orchards we've been to (Red Apple, the dreadedly crowded Honeypot, Tougas, etc.) are much more picturesque and upscale. This is kind of a field of smaller trees haphazardly laid out with a small, trailer-like farm store. The cider donuts were regrettable. They were the smaller variety of bitesize donuts ... they didn't taste much different from Entamins and when we opened the bag, which was sitting on a shelf, two wasps flew out as we dug our fingers into the bag. I'd skip the donuts here. The best part about this place is that you pay by the pound. Upon entering the orchard you are given a bag and upon exiting, you pay by weight. At most orchards for pick your own, there is only a $40 bag, which contains 10 lbs.+ of apples. That is heavy to carry, especially if you have kids who want to pick only a few pounds. I love the pay by weight because you don't need to fill a bag with more applea than you'll probably eat. We saw some people using picking poles because most of the late season apples were at the top of the trees. The apples here are much smaller than any other orchard we went to ... but they were tasty. Yes, there are a LOT of bees/wasps (yellowjackets) inside the orchard and store ... but that is pretty much anywhere. While this wasn't the type of orchard you'd see in a movie scene about applepicking, as it feels more like someone's large backyard with apple trees, it was a nice find later in the season and it wasn't so full of people that the experience was annoying, as many orchards are. If you want a smaller orchard where you can bring the kids to quickly pick a few pounds and can do without a petting zoo, restaurant, hayride and games ... this is a fun and unique spot. read more

I loved this place! I was shocked it wasn't more crowded. My friend suggested it and said it's where she normally goes - I had always been elsewhere. The apples were plentiful and beautiful! It was a quick trip but so lovely. Big plus for the cider slushees which ARE SO DAMN GOOD! The cute country store had a nice small selection of goods - other picked apples, plums, peaches, veggies, etc. They were friendly and very clear and honestly this may be my new apple picking spot. 10/10 recommend. read more

It looked so nice when we drove up but it seems like the corn I bought was cowcorn animal feed all the good apples where too far up to reach when we went to pick apples and the older lady who owns it or runs it was so rude and Ignorant when I was asking her questions about how my husband can get the Apple's down and hes pretty tall she told me to go find a stick in the woods and wack them down apparently she couldn't tell I was in a Wheelchair and unfortunately it does not have Four wheel drive Im definitely working on it my arms get pretty tired ...Over all it looks nice it kinda clean prices are a lil bit up there it was very nice fall festive just bad customer service read more

Cool little orchard that has a great variety of apples! I hate when the orchard's don't tell you what kind of apples you're picking but this one is really organized and everything is tagged by color! So it was really easy to differentiate which trees had which apples (Cortland, red delicious, etc). They also have pick your own peaches- and their only a $1 a pound! The pricing here is amazing and the apples are priced really low as well! Every other orchard I've gone to has cost me about 3x that price! Yes I go apple picking several times and have already been to nearly every orchard nearby- but I'm glad we found this one because it's pretty close to my house! They also have pastries and ciders and cider donuts that are pretty great. They have a farmers market as well. I was pleasantly surprised with my trip here and I'd definitely come back! read more

I think this place is so cute! It's a small little fresh market with fruits and an orchard on the right side of the property. The prices are great and the quality is even better. The only reason for the missing star is its not always very welcoming which is what I would expect from a small local fruit/vegetable market. It looks as if they also started making their own apple wines but I don't think they are available for purchase at the shop. You should definitely come and support this place, you will be in for a treat! read more

From the comments on Sunset Orchard's Facebook page, I thought I had found a gem. The drive there was gorgeous and offered some fantastic leaf-peeping. However, as soon as we entered the main building, my idyllic visions of our annual autumn apple picking adventure immediately began to waver. Lawn furniture, big screen tvs, splatter painted walls, and dingy carpet aside...I'll just sum up the decor by saying it's a bit rough around the edges. I think a big splash of fresh, white paint would do WONDERS for Sunset Orchards. We both got cider and cider donuts. The cider donuts were different than any others I've ever tried. I didn't really like them and the glazing on top tasted of chalky powdered sugar. I didn't even finish mine. The cider was good and tasted like...well, cider. On to the apples. There is a 10lb minimum and the apples are $1.50 a pound. Most places just charge you $15-$20 for the bag and I've never had an issue with that. But, for some reason being handed two bags and told we "had" to fill up these bags seemed very daunting. The orchard isn't huge so you can walk it but there is a tractor (aka lawnmower) pulled wagon if you've got little ones. Overall, the experience was just fine and we got our apples just as we'd hoped but I'm not sure they romanced me enough to get me back there next year. With all of the options for pick-your-own in Rhode Island, I really feel it's important to be on top of your game. For the orchard owners, apple picking is all about the business but for the consumer, it's about the nostalgia and memories you're building so a little fluff and filler can go a long way. read more

This was our first apple picking adventure in RI and it snowballed into an all day organic farm excursion. My wife researched apple orchards near PVD and we chose this orchard based on pricing, see photo, and the peach picking option! It was odd apple picking in 80 degree weather but we made the most of it nonetheless. The apple selection was plentiful and we left with 2 bags of apples totaling 14 pounds haha and they'll last us a week. But we weren't done yet because we found so many peaches and managed to pack a 3rd bag for another 7 pounds! We could have gone straight to the car after paying for 21 pounds worth of fruit but my wife had other plans. We went into their storefront and picked up plums, sweet apple cider, 3 apple turnovers, 1 apple strudel, and 1 apple cider donut. The apple cider donut was the least favorite of all the pastries but that's a personal preference. Overall this was a really fun place, reasonably priced, bountiful, and offered tasty pastries. We'll definitely be going back before the season is over and we'll try to keep the fruit below 10 pounds haha. read more

Sunset Orchard is a nice spot to pick some apples. They had a decent variety of apple trees, which is great for somebody like me who likes to have a variety of different types of apples. In addtion, Sunset Orchard has a great innovation for short people like me who have trouble reaching the good apples: apple pickers attached to the end of a long stick. When you've finished picking apples, be sure to head inside for the true highlights of the trip: the fresh apple cider, delicious candy apples, and CIDER DONUTS. I have never had a donut like their cider donuts in my life. My mouth is watering just thinking about them! I would have given 5 stars, but picking this orchard does require a lot of walking, which can be troublesome for some people. Also, I was stung by a yellowjacket while I was there, and I've never had a 5-star experience that involved getting stung in the hand by an angry insect. read more

Upon arrival, I was greeted with a charming country store, well stocked with cinnamon buns, apple cider donuts, locally made jams, and, best of all, peaches! I've had a little bit of difficulty finding a Pick Your Own peaches location this season, and this is an excellent one. There are four varieties plus nectarines. This is a great place to wander through the apple and peach orchards and come away with a huge bounty; peaches are only $1/lb! As for previous reviews, I think it's a little crazy to lower an orchard's rating because it requires walking and there are insects present -- it's an orchard, not a supermarket, so experiencing the outdoors is kind of the point. This is a great place to do so, a real Rhode Island hidden gem. read more

Having spent an hour or so apple picking at Barden Family Orchard I couldn't get the scent of baked cinnamon apples out of my mind. While I thoroughly enjoyed picking at Barden's orchard, they unfortunately did not have apple pies. Luckily yelp informed of the close by Sunset Orchard, from which I promptly picked up an apple pie, apple strudel, and apple turnover. All three we very good but the pie stood out to me as being particularly homey. Instead of putting too much sugar or making the pie crust overly buttery, these folks keep it simple and let the apple shine through. I will definitely be coming back for more pie and, even though its getting late in the season, maybe I'll try picking some apples too. read more

Hadn't been by Sunset for peaches in a couple years & remembered how good they were the last time I went. Stopped in this past weekend and was not disappointed! Fantastic peaches, I tried the "mystery" white variety. Also tried the Milton variety of apples, also excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful. Big orchard. But I had to deduct a couple of stars due to the terrain/lack of up-keep on the landscape and building. It was difficult for my young daughter to walk through the trees due to huge clumps of grass and hay, which would hide large rocks from view. She fell several times and her face came in close proximity to hitting the hidden rocks. I tripped once as well. read more

Sunset Orchards is one of the longest standing fruit farms in RI and has been in operation for 47 years under the same ownership. They are rated #1 on golocalprov.com and just today had a wedding there in the beautiful orchard with the gorgeous apples hanging on the trees and the gorgeous sunset happening for some great pics. Perhaps the 80 year old owner may have gotten upset when a family of 5 goes out into the field and comes back with 4 pounds of apples? Ummmm they probably ate more than 4 pounds while they were out there picking them. Common sense would tell me that anyone would know there is a minimum! All orchards have a minimum to pick! There is so much waste that happens when a farm allows the public to go pick their own, just imagine. So perhaps when the owner felt like she was being taken advantage of, she had an attitude. Can't say I'd blame her. read more
