Dr. Metten and Shelly were great. I called them and scheduled them for the following day as my dog had begun to rapidly decline. As the day progressed, things got much worse and it was apparent his time was near. They live in Carlsbad and drove all the way to Point Loma (on the same day I called them) because I told them he was doing so poorly. Quick disclaimer: They did mention they usually don't travel this far any longer but I wanted to mention it because they sat in rush hour traffic there and back to come help us. They genuinely care about the pets and their owners and it really showed today. Dr. METTEN was wonderful. I had to put my beautiful chocolate lab down on short notice. My 3 year old lab was suffering from stage 4 lymphoma and I knew I had limited time. I knew it was time for my baby to go, but I was panicked because I couldn't find a euthanasia service still making house calls during Covid. This review has taken me some time to write as I've missed Max so much. In February, our beloved 12 year old Golden Retriever, Max needed help to quickly pass and end his pain and suffering. Max had been having seizures and had stopped eating. We were planning on seeing how he was in the morning and taking him back to the vet (he had been a few times that week). Recently my 15 year old Australian Cattle Dog started to slip away gradually. A once super active companion was relegated to pretty much sleeping and eating as she gradually gave in to nerve disease. I had already had two Vets admonish me about the fact most folks keep their dogs alive and suffering too long because they don't want to loose their pet. They told me to send her on her way when the bad days outnumbered the good ones. Addie suffered a seizure which was obviously painful on a Monday afternoon. I had already researched some places that seemed to make the process a bit to much (for me)....think big funeral as opposed to small service. When I went to call one of those places I ran across Sunset Vet. They seemed compassionate but much more to the point. I realize some may want memorials and such, but not me. I called Dr. Metten right after. He came to my home the next day, we talked a bit about Addie's condition and then we sent my dear friend on her way. For me as a former Cop death is not a stranger. I was able to sit and stroke Addie as she passed. What was very touching for this grizzled old Law Dog was hearing Dr. Metten softly saying to me, "I am so sorry Dad".....comforting words at a very, very difficult time. As I mentioned, I did not need some fancy deal done. I want to spread Addie's ashes at our favorite desert camping spot....in other words no fancy box needed. Dr. Metten agreed to bring me the ashes (personally) in a bag. I had to go get my last dog's ashes myself. Nice touch Sunset Vet. I recommend Dr. Metten wholeheartedly. read more

Sunday, April 7, 2019 was one of the saddest days of my life, as I said goodbye to my cherished golden retriever and best friend, Jammer. Dr. Metten and his brother-in-law, who came to help, were wonderful, even traveling outside their usual territory to help us. My precious boy went peacefully with my arms around him in the safety and comfort of his own home, and I did not have to experience the empty drive home from the vet's office. A week later, Sunset Pet delivered his ashes to my home, which, although painful, was much preferable to having to go somewhere to pick them up. It was the Friday of Memorial weekend, I had a difficult time finding a mobile vet who was immediately available. I didn't want to take her into our regular vet's office. I'm so grateful to SPVC for their caring and compassionate attention to me and my wolfdog from beginning to end. I felt comforted from the moment I spoke to them on the phone. My wolfdog posed some challenges with her higher chemical tolerance, but Dr. Metten remained calm and in control with a smooth outcome. As sad as I felt, I was also very relieved.
