I don't go to cobblers very often but am trying to change that. No reason to throw out a perfectly good pair of shoes when all it needs is new outer soles. I had exactly this need recently. I had soles that I wanted to use (bought from the place that originally supplied the shoes), so I brought these down to Sunset Shoe. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their spot is small, but they're very attentive to customers coming in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They quickly confirmed they could do the repair/sole replacement and that it would be ready in a week. Nice and easy. They charge up front, though it wasn't clear to me until I saw my charge later that they add a service fee for card transactions. Not a huge deal, but something to keep in mind. Embarrassingly bad work. Do not bring anything you care about here. On Sat 1/18/25 I dropped off a belt to have it shortened by 1in, and to fix a piece that had a missing staple. I was told to pick it up on Tue 1/21/25 at noon. I arrived to pick it up on Wed 1/22/25 @ 6pm and one of the guys was working on it and told me "it's not ready, the machine is broken, come back tomorrow". What machine? They added glue and cut off one inch of fabric. I ended up picking up the belt on Thurs 1/23/25. I needed a staple replaced and the length shortened. They threw on a glob of glue, and left a huge gap from the end of the belt to the buckle. This was a cheap and hideous "service". If I had known it was going to look like this, I would've closed my eyes, tied one hand behind my back, and done it myself... and it still probably would've come out better. This also cost $25. Expect your things to be repaired poorly, not ready on time, and to be charged not proportionately to the quality of the work. Again, if you have things you care about, this is not the place for you. read more

Skilled Shoe Repair AND Upholstery Resewing After appreciating Tony's shoe repair shop for 25 years, we found ourselves in need of significant restitching of four 45-year-old leather couch cushions - and failed to recognize the connection. Fortunately, a top SF re-upholsterer (Michael of Venezia Upholstery) recognized the "baseball style" triple-seam would require large-gauge machine sewing repair. He suggested we try a shoe repair shop, "where the real leather experts are." Within minutes of walking into Tony's well-equipped Sunset Shoe Repair shop, he had disassembled part of the leather seam on an example cover we brought in and confidently declared the leather cover repair achievable on machinery. He quoted a MORE than fair price per item, and an insanely fast turnaround time of three business days. He kept that promise, and the quality (plus knowing when to extend repair to vulnerable adjacent seams) was terrific. He took care to hit the old holes and cleaned and conditioned the covers before we picked them up. All good. It's worth remembering this shop if you someday face a leather repair challenge, particularly upholstery. Tony is knowledgeable, skilled, and straightforward in his approach. Second visit was just as good as the first. :) Brought a pair of leather knee-high boots that had been water damaged with soles that'd already begun falling apart. By the end of the week, they'd been re-soled and re-stained. The heel was replaced and I couldn't tell that there'd been any water damage. The photos speak for themselves. My daughter in law had a pair of boots she liked, she shipped them to me because I reocommended Sunset for her repair. They did such a fantastic job and charged an incredibly resonable price for the job. My daughter in law then sent a purse that was very special to her. I took it to the shop and explained what I needed and I have to say again these people did an amazing job. When I dropped it oof I didn't even ask what the repair might cost. I didn't care it was a special job and I was willing to pay. They did the repair with such expertise, I couldnt even tell the repair had been done. I needed a leather belt. I gave Sunset Shoe repair a call and the gentleman I spoke with said he had several to show me. His selection was small but a satisfactory selection. A pleasant salesman, he let me try several sizes and after picking out the 1 I liked offered to punch a hole so the belt would fit perfectly. So pissed! Have an expensive leather Marc Jacobs bracelet that I asked to have resealed on the edges and extra holes put in it since my wrist has grown a bit. He looked at it and told me he could do and it would be nice and easy. Today I went to pick it up and the seal Was done " not very good" but I was like it will work. I paid and went to put it on and realized that the extra holes were in fact not put in it. It still had the pen dots for the holes. So I said this isn't finished. He grabbed it out of my hands and took it over to his bench and punched 3 holes in it. Right then! Came back handed it to me and said here you go. The holes looked like a blind 5yr old did this. Not spaced and one bigger than the others as well as them not being in a straight line! Now it is ruined. A $250 Bracelet ruined! So pissed! I paid for it and will never ever go back here again! Throughout the better part of the 1990s, I lived in the SF Inner Sunset. It is among my most favorite, and for sure, most under-rated neighborhoods in the City. During that time, Sunset Shoe Repair was my go-to place for shoe repair, being being just a hop, skip and jump from my apartment on 7th Ave. Working the counter was a friendly guy named Glenn, who I later discovered (many years later) was the owner. Their work was immaculate and their prices ridiculously fair, even relative to the very affordable cost of living in SF during that time. As a college kid, prices mattered. I don't know how he did it, but Glenn gloriously extended the life of my favorite pair of men's leather dress shoes well beyond its natural life. Glenn proved himself to be part artisan and part magician. As long as Glenn was behind the counter, managing the store, service was always polite, attentive and wholly satisfying. His work product was par excellence, and he possessed an Olde World tradesman attention to detail that is nearly impossible to find today. I have not been back to the store in over 20 years so I cannot speak about the quality of service today, or even who owns it, but a quick search online shows that he retired in 2010, and passed away three years later. Since he had inherited the business from his father and operated it so lovingly for some 30 years, I must assume he became seriously ill and was forced into retirement. He was a true craftsman, a great neighbor and a real gentleman and will be sorely missed. I never did do back to the store all those years later, I wish I had a chance to say good bye. If Glenn was still operating the store I would have gladly given five stars, but knowing the work quality of current management the best I can do is three start. read more

Did half the work we agreed on. I came in to pick it up, and the piece was half-done. He asked me to pay the same amount again, to finish it. Awkward. I told him that's not what we agreed on. I'd made it clear, and he even said the word "both" back to me, pointing to both sets. I'm 100% sure on this. He offered no other solution than for me to pay the same amount, again. Not cool. Now I have a black leather Vince Camuto purse-backpack with two totally different zippers. I have to say, it looks ridiculous. (See pic.) I wasn't expecting him to create designer zipper-ties, but at least to match them. He first tried to convince me that it looked okay, and then that the other ties actually looked better. As in, the ones he didn't do. Lol. What?! :) I wish one of the other guys was there who'd heard our agreement. Perhaps he genuinely forgot? But I have the feeling he just decided on his own that he didn't have to do it. But that's kind of not his choice, when he said he'd do both. If he wanted to charge more, he should have just been upfront. I still paid him the full-price, which was me keeping it clear on my end. I suggest that if you do decide to get work done here: write down your agreement, take a picture, something. Because if this guy decides not to do it, or forgets, or whatever - he won't own it. Took my daughter's Ugg boot for repair. (Please see the pic attached) Absolutely terrible job. I called when I returned home to discuss my disappointment and his response was well I told you it might not match perfectly and I did know that BUT he didn't tell me they were going to look like a 5 year old cut the patch (doesn't even match the small rip) and glue it one with the edges still hanging off! He didn't offer any solution. A while later he called me back and told me to bring in her other (perfectly fine) Ugg boot and they would patch it to match?!!!! Are you joking?! WHY WOULD I DO THAT!? No sir! Nooooo! Bad business if you ask me. Doesn't seem to care to much about the customer satisfaction or the work (he or someone else did). Definitely will never go back there. Tony repaired a pair of RedWing steel toe boots where the soles fell off after 3 uses. Redwing just laugh at me and so I threw the pair in the closet. The cost of the repair was about the cost of a new pair of timberlands, but half cost of new pair of redwings.........The Redwings that had really great leather uppers. I decided I need to find some place I could trust to repair the boots. Base on the reviews, I was a little bit hesitant, but let them repair the boots. They came back ok, and little dissapointed in the new soles as they we not like the originals where there was a layer of rubber and foam. It as basically a all foam sole, so the grip was not like before. I think Tony is best at making repairs to shoes with leather bottoms. Somehow, the other work boot displayed looked like the workmanship was better. read more

I would not recommend taking your shoes here. I took a pair of satin Manolo Blahniks to be dyed and they ruined them by using leather dye. The dye was poorly applied, has streaks, and rubs off to the touch. The shoes are completely unwearable now. read more

I brought my boots here 11/1/17 because one of my zippers was split and stuck. The merchant suggested I put in new zippers for $90. I thought wow that's steep but these are my favorite boots so I thought ok. I came back in a rush and picked them up without examining them. I went to wear them this morning and the split and stuck zipper on the one boot while no longer stuck was still splitting when you zip it up. I'm going in to talk to the merchant. *** After talking with Tony Tony was very apologetic that the boot was not zipping. He fixed it on the spot. He said that his employee did the work and did not replace the slide or test his work. He gave me this card that let me get heels replaced for free next time I come in. Smart businessman to find compensation that still brings me back to his store after a bad first impression. So I'd say Tony's a good guy. His employees may not always do the best work so check your shoes out to be sure you're happy with the work you paid to have done. This is the only shoe repair in the immediate area, so it will probably do in a pinch. I brought a casual athletic shoe in with a tear in the upper. I asked for a repair and if the hole could be sewn closed. Was told that a patch would be needed in the inside. For the $20, I assume that the job would include a patch and sewing. However, it was only patched. So far, it is holding up but is not ideal. The patch is rough and stiff compared to the rest of the shoe. So, it is not as comfortable as it had been. Also the tear is still pretty visible. So this is not a great cosmetic solution. I had a similar repair performed downtown and that shop sewed the shoe. Different shoe, so not exactly the same situation. But I was more pleased with that result. On the plus, the job was ready when I came In to pick it up. A minor quibble is that the night before I arrived 20 minutes before the posted closing time, but the shop was already locked. read more
