Go on this tour and you'll be nothing but AMAZED. The history of what the mine workers experienced…read moreto help this country grow and prosper will leave you speechless. Being in the mine adds a lot to the experience... you're seeing and feeling what the miners felt... except they didn't have the lights like you'll have. I'll also say that our mine tour guide, a student in the Geology program at Michigan Tech. was one of the best tour guides I've ever had for any tour. He is not only passionate and knowledgable about Geology, he knew so much detail about the Quincy mine on really every level, as well as the experiences and way of life of the miners themselves. I was floored by not only all he learned in order to be as knowledgable as he is, but also how much it's clear that he loves everything about the mine and miners... all while being a student with this as only a summer job. I was excited to take this tour. It was much, much more than I anticipated. If you go, bring warm clothing... I was in shorts and a thin long-sleeved shirt with a t-shirt underneath. That was NOT enough. Dress like it's a brisk winter day.

Our tour guide talked at length of how upset the workers were when the mining company added 2…read moreperson power drills. But the miners adjusted because they were still working in teams of 2. Then when they were forced to use single person drills, they felt isolated and feared for their safety. Yesterday when our LARGE Family group went, a couple of our littles make noise when our guide was talking. He asked that the children be taken outside. The children and their mothers were isolated from the group, outside alone at the bottom of a very steep hill, for over an hour. No one to keep them safe if an animal came out of the bushes, no bathroom or water. There was another child and its parents that were asked to leave the tour also. When the mothers called the front desk to ask about sending someone down to bring them back up, they said they don't do that. Talk about feeling unsafe and isolated

So we found ourselves with a kid free week, and UP Michigan was on our list to revisit…read more We lucked out booking this - we missed the storms, there was a little rain, and Faith O. Kayaked backwards the entire trip, keeping the group moving and calling out the geology and history (and she got jokes). You get on a boat, and they take you out - and you get in the kayak on the rack on the boat and they guide you out. Super easy. PFDs and sea skirts are provided and required! We stayed dry. Also - tandem kayaks! Less nimble than recreational kayaks, but also more stable. Assuming your partner doesn't lean over the edge. It's a nice trip! Best and most convenient/organized kayak tour, ever! We were impressed with the knowledge,…read moreprofessionalism and friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness, comfort and the cool design of the boat. Another cool thing was how seamless they launched us from the boat into our kayaks. None of us got the slightest bit wet at any part of the tour. We had fun learning about the history of Lake Superior and the geology of the pictured rocks (I promise, it was fascinating!). AJ, our kayak guide, his name was AJ. AJ had a great sense of humor and kept us laughing. Note: I believe AJ was in a competition with the other guides (who were not nearly as awesome as AJ) I hope he gets extra credit for the number of times AJ appears in one review of AJ. We booked the Ultimate Kayak tour, it was about an hour boat ride out to the rocks, about a 3 hour kayak experience and another hour back. Make sure you bring your sunscreen, even if the temp is cool. There is a restroom onboard the boat, guides are able to radio the boat (as it follows the kayak groups) if someone needs to use the bathroom or needs to return to the boat for any reason. Also, it was so nice to see so much of the rocks and for the length of the kayaking it was one way, we never had to turn around and paddle back upstream. So smart! We highly recommend this tour!
