Just had an incredible private lesson with Pilar via SUP with Wade! I've wanted to try SUP for a while and decided to book a private lesson with my girlfriend, as we now live nearby. I have not worked out in several months and am overcoming a few health concerns. My girlfriend on the other hand is extremely athletic! Pilar introduced us to SUP in a way that allowed us to have fun from the moment we hit the water and enjoy together. Pilar provides us with clear instruction that allowed us to push ourself at our own pace but respected my limitations. We were provided with well maintained and sanitized gear. We took 2 lessons with Pilar and we loved it! I'm a bit out of shape but it didn't stop me from looking for new healthy hobby to share with my husband. Was happy to find great local lessons right here in San Pedro. We've got great initial instructions how to paddle (granted I forgot all of it the moment I stepped into the water) and off we went! There were just 2 of us and Pilar, private lesson at its best ! We both felt off the board first time trying to stand up (it's stand up paddling after all) but Pilar helped us to get back to the board and 2nd attempt was a success! Don't be afraid to fall, it's not bad at all. I was so happy we both enjoyed paddling, we decided to take another lesson just to make sure we do it right. Pilar was attentive and helped me to paddle in the correct form. It's very important to do it right, otherwise you get tired soon. My muscles were sore after both lessons, it's a great workout! 2nd time we were on the water with family if 4 and it was even more fun because I didn't fall, my legs didn't shake that bad and I was enjoying the view. I have wanted to SUP for a long time. Before committing to my own equipment I wanted to get some instruction and try out a board to handle my weight. I have some extra. Calling in and spoke to Krista - she talked me through all of my questions about the class - what to wear, where to park, what to expect. Did the payment over PayPal- she sent a link. The day of - turned out I was the only student so it was like a private lesson. Wade was on time, personable, patient and a kind coach. We did on land training to get technique correct- and learned about the core workout that SUP really is. We got out on water and it was awesome, great coaching and reminding to get form correct now, so bad habits don't form. We paddled in the Cabrillo beach area and into the little marina, had to navigate the wake waves, but going early means the water is generally flat. The board I had was long and sturdy so when I fell- I fell on my backend and didn't roll into the water. This middle aged doughy lady was quite pleased about the whole experience. I feel like I have fallen in love with a sport - finally. Highly recommend - think this could be a fun girls day event, bachelorette party, b day party for tweens, the list is endless. Wade is a waterman, he is incredibly knowledgeable about SUP and surfing, he is a natural teacher and in fact teaches SUP to the Boy Scouts at the facility, and has been doing this for decades. He is not a dude bro - that leads with his ego; he is confident, and guides you to be your best. I was lucky to get an appointment alone, but in a group setting i bet he would be awesome as well. After we were back in, he shows you how to fresh water rinse the board and explains why that is important. They have a weekly meet up on Wednesdays and Thursdays led by a former student- I for sure be attending that until I decide what board to settle on. Thanks for a fun morning Wade! Wade is passionate about SUP technique and the time we spent practicing around the beautiful olympic pool paid dividends once we were on the water. We had a relaxing, fun, and invigorating morning with our excellent guide and instructor, Corey. This was our family's first time paddle boarding, and we received excellent, patient instruction on stable and easy to use paddle boards. Setting everything up with easy, and I would highly recommend booking with them. I will certainly do it again. We are staying at the Terranea Resort, and Wade's location is a quick and beautiful drive into town. There is plenty of free parking at the waterside. We arrived, and Corey was waiting for us. After Quickly getting outfitted with PFDs and paddles, we hit the waterside for some instruction. The guidance was great. Everyone in our family, our 11 year old and all, was up and taking in the beautiful morning in no time. It was a little windy, but Corey shared some tips, and the wind faded into the background. I had a great experience with Wade and he was patient and "coach" like (in a good way) in making sure that I get a handle and learn the efficient paddle form. I'm not a coordinated person or in great shape (I'd be walking and sometimes my knee popped out-I've been pretty good since my last surgery tho but yea that gives you scope of my coordination skills). Wade has his stuff in a boat slip and it's in an enclosed area so if you have spectators, they'll either have to stay in the boat slip area or they can leave and there is a pathway to walk around the area. Great deal for 2 hours and even better if you can get a little group. Ooowee what a work out and my feet fell asleep while standing on the board so don't forget to wiggle your toes! I went with my sister who is the ex gymnast/coordinated one and she was able to get the paddle stroke down and she's a natural! I plan to take another lesson with wade. I don't plan ever becoming competitive in paddle boarding but he's definitely the coach I want to learn from so I won't be just a buoy out in the channel/ocean haha. I took a trip down to SoCal just this past weekend and wanted to do something different! Stand up paddle boarding was on my summer bucket list so I Yelped the best place to get lessons near the area I was staying at and found SUP with Wade! She was extremely helpful, friendly, accommodating and patient (since I kept adding people up until the day before and asked to switch our times... Hehe sorry) So the day of the lesson we rolled up late... But they were totally understanding about it. We had Ryan for our instructor (the ladies in my group were pretty pleased with the eye candy ;) He was very knowledgable and explained things clearly. After our on land lesson we hit the water and paddled around the beautiful marina. It was super fun, we got to see some awesome sea lions and a duck hitched a ride on our instructor's board almost the whole time it was epic! I'm so glad we learned to SUP with Wade's team. Thanks to Corey, we learned techniques that allow us to stay out enjoying the water longer. If you're on the fence, just go do it with Wade's team, maybe you'll fall in love with it like we did. Our story - Husband and I headed to San Pedro to learn SUP early one Friday morning. We weren't entirely happy about crawling out of bed so early but we made it down to San Pedro for the 8 am start. (I'm so glad we did!) Corey showed us how to SUP and we were in the water fairly quickly. The 8 am water was calm, the wind was minimal and there wasn't much activity in the area. We got comfortable SUPing with minimal distractions or external challenges. We saw fish and Corey showed us a star fish while helping us learn how to maneuver on the SUP; without even realizing it we were stopping, turning around and in full control. We also learned how to handle wake from passing boats. In a rather comical way, I learned the right way to jump off a paddle board into the gorgeous Pacific Ocean by doing it totally wrong. By the time we headed back to the shore, the wind had picked up. At that moment I was so grateful for the knowledge Wade's team had in starting at 8 am. Wind changed everything!! Corey stuck by us and taught us how to handle the wind and made us better SUPers. We've since been back for rentals (at 8 am each time) and loved every minute of it. I would advise a waterproof watch because time really flies when you're out there using the techniques this team teaches you. Stress relief, a great, full body workout and a fun time in the water... I don't know why everyone isn't out there doing this!! read more

Wade was out of town so my friend and I received a SUP lesson from his wife Krista instead. She was awesome! You don't even feel like you're getting a lesson, it's really more like hanging out with a girlfriend all day who happens to give you pointers here and there. Even the short intro on the shore went by super fast and we were on the water in no time. She made the whole experience very comfortable and fun. Great customer service + reasonable price + SUP = fun for all ages This place has no sign or storefront. Parking across from Neptune Marina apartments, you walk towards the marina and call someone (we called Gerry). He waved at us and opened the gate for us. We signed the waiver, paid our fees ($20 for 1 hour per person), and were on our way to paddle away! We got there around 5:30p on Saturday, and no other people were paddleboarding. The water was warm and calm. Some bigger boats were slowly cruising by us, so our boards got rocked a little bit. However, none of us fell into the water. It was relaxing and soothing. Make sure you wear sunscreen and a sun hat if you are out in the water during the day. (You may also want to bring some water with you.) Wade renews my faith in sports oriented teaching and people in general! And what better day to experience that faith than on Christmas eve. I purchased a SUP a few days ago and my goal is to surf on it as quickly as possible---In the winter at 54 yrs old no less. I have a fair amount of experience with ocean sports / surfing and know all too well how many self proclaimed experts dot the seascape and how much attitude permeates the sport. it's just the way it goes when you have too many people and not enough waves. Wade answered my initial email immediately and seemed to know exactly what I was going to need to do to prepare for my lofty goals. He was early to our class, patient, knowledgable, unassuming, down to earth and has great intuition. He was able to give 4 people of different abilities focused and high quality instruction without leaving anyone behind. From all the places I have been paddle boarding this was one of the best. The main reason, sea lions!!! They hang out in the marina and you paddle right past them. In fact some people get pretty close. One was swimming around and popped up 4 ft from me. Scared the heck out of me for a minute. A friend who works here goes out all the time and has seen a great white swim around when he was further out in the ocean. Not saying I want to see one of those though. lol read more

My son and I took a SUP class with Wade today and we both thought it was great. Wade is really patient, knowledgeable, and makes it easy to learn. I really enjoyed this class. My wife and I had never SUP before and were a little nervous. Wade first showed us by the side of a pool the proper paddling techniques & explained some very simple does and don'ts. We had the best experience out on the water with Wade yesterday! My husband and I had been out several times before, but needed some help with technique. Personally, I used to get a cramped up right shoulder after a short session of paddling. Wade taught us proper technique and the aches and pains are gone! Let me just say that Wade is a true professional, very friendly and patient as well. SUP is very important to me since I spent most of 2013 recovering from a long illness. SUP was one of the few activities I was able to do to get myself back to normal and get exercise. I can definitely enjoy the sport so much more now that I can paddle efficiently and without hurting myself. Wade has a great location to instruct in Marina del Rey. This was my first time paddle boarding and it was great! There were just two of us taking the lesson. It was for two hours, and the first part you learn the basics on land. Then you take to the water and paddle away! Wade was a great instructor. Perfect mix of instructions and freedom to let you experiment (not bossy just helpful). Wade was sooo nice. My wife and I just had a 2 hr lesson with Wade today. There were only two other people in our lesson so we had good personal instruction with him. He is a fun, cool guy who clearly enjoys his job. We probably spent about 40 minutes on dry land going over techniques and safety before hitting the water for the rest of the time. Due to the small numbers in our group, and all his groups, he is constantly monitoring you and helping you adjust and perfect your paddle skills. I didn't know, but Wade is actually a professional big wave surfer/paddleboarder. So we literally learned from the best! Surprisingly, Stand-Up Paddling isn't as easy as you'd think. My boyfriend and I had a fantastic lesson with Ryan this past weekend! We purchased a lesson through HowAboutWe for Couples. Having never tried paddle boarding before, we were both a little nervous about being able to pick up the sport. As soon as Ryan greeted us, we were both at ease. He was friendly, knowledgable, and funny. He got us in the water and standing up on our boards so quickly! Throughout the lesson, as we needed encouragement or tips, Ryan provided great feedback in a gentle manner so neither of us felt as though we were doing badly.
