I woke up excited to try a new paddleboarding spot and approached the Paddle Method tent at Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey. I asked Tim about the rental price, and he told me it was $30 for the first hour and $20 for each additional hour. I mentioned that the price seemed a little high compared to other beautiful locations where I've rented paddleboards, including Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, but I was still willing to give the place a try. I filled out the required paperwork and shared that I regularly paddleboard and kayak. Instead of responding professionally, Tim became defensive and said, "You try renting a space in LA and tell me if my prices are trash." I never called his prices "trash," so the comment felt unnecessarily rude and confrontational. I brushed it off, even though it immediately left a bad impression. After completing the form and writing down my start time, I stood there waiting to be helped. Tim continued chatting with his friend and completely ignored me for approximately 10 minutes, even though I was standing directly in front of him. At that point, I decided not to move forward with the rental. Between the defensive attitude, disrespectful comment, and lack of customer service, the experience made my decision very clear. It's been a while since I'd been on a SUP, and I'd already paddled at Mother's before, so I wasn't expecting much. Tim & Zoe proved me wrong. I appreciated that Tim took the time to thoroughly explain technique and transparency of SUP as a rigorous activity--unlike other companies sending you off with your a board just to get smacked by the boats in the harbor. His partner, Zoe, was equally wonderful--genuinely warm, welcoming, and just a pleasure to chat with. I would even consider booking private lessons to gain enough confidence to get out into the ocean. Tim gave individualized feedback to everyone in the group... it was giving coach worthy vibes. Six of us, including 3 first-timers, took the beginners' lesson today. Our instructor, Tim, was just awesome. He taught us the basics for about 15 minutes on the ground before we headed out on the water. All of us, including our 11 year-old (first-timer), were able to paddle standing up, AND we all had a blast! We are talking about taking another lesson this week. It was only my second time taking a paddle board lesson, but I think I can say the lesson we had today was as good as it gets (5 stars). Tim was extremely patient and personable. We couldn't start our lesson on time, but he did not rush us or did he not cut our time short. I highly recommend Paddle Method! Tip: There are bathrooms nearby, but I recommend using the bathroom ahead of time. I've been coming to this spot at Mother's Beach for a few years now and it's high time I left a proper review for Tim, his team, and the consistently good business I've encountered for many summers. Why do I go to Mother's Beach when there are plenty of other beaches? It's for Paddle Method. And after several years by now I could've bought my own board, but seeing Tim and his team is a bit like seeing an old friend every time, happy to assist, happy to help out. I've become a better paddle-boarder because of his lessons, and he really makes an effort to bring people into the paddleboarding world who are safe, know the "rules of the road," and hopefully, like I did, catch the bug, so that paddleboarding isn't just a one-time adventure, but something you do regularly. There are a couple other paddleboard operations in that vicinity but they simply give you a board with very little instruction, and man, you can spot them every time in the marina, paddling near boats with no idea what they are doing. Tim on the other hand makes sure you are safe, have some knowledge with technique, and sends you off knowing you can handle the water no matter the wind, boats, or jet-skis that might come your way. If you want to learn how to paddleboard, he's your man, and if you already know how, he's the spot to check out! And if you're really adventurous, he even does ocean paddling! She spent a lot of time having us practice on land, explaining the how's and why's. Then we did laps close to shore before venturing down to more open water. Today was our fourth or fifth paddle boarding with them. We've always had good experience before today. We rented 4 boards at 4pm as we knew they closed at 5pm and all the boards needed to be returned by 5:30pm. When we returned the boards at 5:15 or so, we found out that we were charged for the entire hour for the extra 20 mins overage. Prior to today, every time we went over, we were always charged pro rate. However for reason they decided to charge us for the entire hour when we only went over for about 20 mins (at the end of their shift so there was no reservation after us). When the reservation was made, we explicit mentioned that we may go over for a little bit but it was never communicated to us that if we went over the 5 min grace period, we would be charge for the entire 2nd hour. I have no problem paying for the time that went over the time reserved but being charged for the entire hour for 15 mins was absurd to us especially when we were always charged for the pro rata rate before today. Worst of all, when we brought up the question, one of the staff (the taller one) started getting annoyed at us. It wasn't until second staff joined into the conversation he started apologizing for the confusion, etc. We ended up paying $45 per board for about 1hr and 15 mins. read more

We came here to rent as first time paddle boarders. Everything started off well we got our boards and paddle really close to the water and were told some basic information about how to paddle and stop. When we got in the water however, we were approached by a man whom I think may have been the owner. He was horribly condescending and kept on chewing out his employee in front of us for renting out to first timers without a lesson. It would have been fine if he had just apologized and turned us away, but instead he kept on insulting my friend during the skills test for not being able to come back when he never even told her to turn around. At one point I asked him a small question about the preffered way to kneel, and instead of replying he told me "That's what our 90 minute lesson is for!" He continued to say we probably wouldn't be able to stand(we did easily) and even deducted the time where he kept on nagging from our overall time. Tldr; condescending rude owner. read more

I booked a paddleboard lesson for my 16 year old granddaughter who was visiting us. I called Tim twice to ask him some questions and he responded immediately and was very helpful. The parking lot was nearby and the place where the lesson started was very easy to find. Elle was my granddaughter's teacher. She was excellent. She gave her instructions and I couldn't believe what happened. My granddaughter was standing up and paddle boarding in no time. Elle kept a close eye on her while she was in the water. The lesson was in a safe area where there were no boats or waves. It would be good for children and people trying the sport for the first time. Elle was very positive and helpful. Tim taught me how to paddleboard in 2015. He's positive, encouraging, friendly, and super easy to have as a coach learning a new skill. The briefings are outstanding; you'll know exactly what to expect when paddling the first time or the first of many times. The quality of the equipment is excellent for what he's doing; showing you the right way to equip yourself should you go further with this activity. The location (Mother's beach) is ideal and safe for even the most water-averse people. I just met Spencer, and I think that he's the right guy to work with Tim. I do my best to bring everyone I can here. They always leave with a smile and have had a great time. Tim has made a good business decision to teach paddleboarding more than rent out boards, which is probably a better thing for the many people that used to go and not understand how to paddle efficiently. This was my first paddleboarding lesson and it was amazing. I was hesitant because I have no water sport experience, but had seen people looking pretty kick ass on their paddleboards and decided to give it a shot. Going to Paddle Method for my first time SUP was the perfect experience. The instructors patiently showed us how to get in, get paddling and get back out. We paddled around the mostly calm beach inlet for about an hour and never once felt nervous or not in control. Amazing workout! They even gave us a coupon for the restaurant at the Jamaica Bay.
