Our House - Croquetas de Bacalao y Manchego

Loved this place from the moment I walked in. We were looking for a place to watch a few of the…read moresports games last night and this fit the bill and then some. When you walk in you can see the different sections that it's comprised of, with the main bar on the right, a gaming and sports loungey area (with couches to sit down and play or watch the game!!!!) just slight past that, and a main dining area further straight ahead. I was caught off guard over the fact that even as a gaming bar, there is a very fancy feel to it, to the point that it has a separate private room that is closed off, with a nice wine collection in it. Sat down with friends and we enjoyed some PS5 games on the lower right portion of the big monitor while the rest of us watched some baseball and later on the Nuggets/Timberwolves game. Rebeca paid close attention to us the entire night and her service and attitude were exceptional. She recommended several of the dishes that we ended up trying, including the Bacalao and Manchego Croquetas (easily one of the best appetizers I've had in the last few years), as well as the ribs (amazingly sauced and fall-apart tender). She even told us about a few off-menu items, like the Big Boss Burger which I can't tell how big the patty was but it was huge and very well stuffed and cooked to perfection. Drink selection was prime. I had a mule which is my go-to but it tasted crisper than usual, so I asked and they told me they make the ginger beer for it in-house. Good whiskey and bourbon selections as well. And GAMES. Not just videogames too (there's a lot of that, including an arcade cabinet for two people to play fighting games there!!!!!) but they also had a giant Jenga, a big connect four, and several other smaller games in order to be able to appease crowds with kids. A lot of the menu is videogame themed, which is by design, but don't let it put you off from taking the place seriously. This is very well run and I'm already looking for reasons to go back again.

It gave us a nice view of the large open restaurant. There are tons of TVs around and, in talking to our server, they have basically any sports package you would want so if you want to watch a game, this is the place to do it. We split a club sandwich. It was huge so splitting was the right choice. It came with a side and we chose the onion rings. Again, great choice. Rings were crispy and delicious. Our server was great. We talked to him a bit about the event and DR baseball. Great experience.

We were a party of 6 there to watch the playoff game. We were sitting in the back and saw that the place had cleared out enough that several booths were now open, so we decided to grab a more comfortable spot where we could settle in and watch the football game. Miss Gabriela came over and told us we had to move. There were several other open tables. She explained that there were people outside in line waiting for that particular table. We did not see any line, and our awesome waiter, Richard, had already given us the okay to move. As we closed out our check with him, he said someone would be by to clean the table. Well, Gabriele was not happy that we were accommodated and never sent a waiter to take our order or clean the table. We waited 20 minutes and only after speaking to the manager were we serviced. Our waitress was awesome, very attentive, and friendly. We ordered drinks and nachos, which were just mediocre. Then the game was changed to a volleyball game. Several football fans asked about the game being changed and were told that we had to watch volleyball. Many started to close out their checks and after closing mine and going to the host's desk, Miss Gabriele snatched the parking ticket from my hand and proceeded to validate my ticket. I was beyond stunned and in total disbelief. I went to speak to the manager and he was very dismissive and as I looked over, there was Gabriele laughing and flashing a heart with her two hands my way. She was very antagonistic in manner and the manager did absolutely nothing. I have never been treated in such an unprofessional manner as I was at this establishment. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

The…read moreatmosphere and warmth of our initial experience was so great that I made it a deliberate mission to find it again when visiting recently. We were thrilled when we finally walked through the door again after wracking our brains to remember our favorite spot in Old Town. Upon entering, we were greeted by a young woman who, mentioned it was her very first day as an assistant to the bartender. Despite being brand new, she was warm, engaged, and genuinely welcoming, excited for us that we had made it back after several years, and impressed with our efforts. Shortly thereafter the bartender on duty approached us mid-conversation, visibly irritated. When I mentioned that we hadn't yet decided on drinks but were being well taken care of in the meantime, she interrupted sharply to bark at us that she was the bartender and the ONLY one who could help us. The tone was unwelcoming enough that after a moment, my companion and I determined that we would prefer to move on and left without ordering. The atmosphere is truly special, and it deserves to be matched by the experience guests receive at the bar. Our experience was simply not the vibe that night, and I truly was disappointed FOR the new hire who was doing what she should in engaging us until we could be served. I sincerely hope to return on a future visit to San Juan and to rediscover the experience that first brought me back to La Grieta.
