the owner (Ryan Sultenfuss) built my 20x14 ft deck on 9 August 2019. he built the deck with 13 posts and a total of 13 bags of cement with no joist hangers. I haven't used my deck since it was built. I went to arbitration in April 2022 and won the case without a lawyer. I also went thru 3 small claims in 2022. Ryan Sultenfuss lied to 3 federal judges stating he gave me a check for $15k. the constable officer told him to give me $3k. I hired a lawyer to represent me in April 2024. he failed to appear. it's been 6 years and Ryan Sultenfuss refused to repair my deck and pay over $15k in repairs. Be careful with this company. imagine paying over $24k for your dream deck, the owner cutting corners to make a profit and you're stuck with a substandard deck that is shifting and waiting to fall. read more

I contracted with Ryan Suttenfuss in July 2024 to install a sun sail and paid him a $3500 deposit. It's now late November, and he won't return my texts or my attorney's phone calls and emails. I intend to file a claim against him in small claims court. Let my experience be a warning: do NOT do business with Superior Outdoor Designs or Ryan Suttenfuss. I'm so pleased with my "new" deck! Age, weather and glaring sun had damaged much of my deck. The owner of Superior came out and reassured me that my deck could be repaired to look like new. Boy, was he right! Rotten boards were replaced, loose boards were secured, the surface was sanded - it looked beautiful. The owner then recommended The "Dexpert" for the Coating. Buyer Beware! This company seems to think building permits are optional. Now we have almost $2000 worth of extra work that needs to be done AFTER they left because they left us with huge city code violations. We hired this company because we thought they were top notch and would take care of these steps for us. Once the structure was up and they had their money no one seems to be able to return our calls. To top it off, there is still no guarantee that we can keep the structure because of the property codes for the city. After we spent the day in the zoning office in San Antonio we found out they aren't licensed in the city, only the state. This has been a horrible! Spend your money somewhere else don't be left hanging in a mess like we are. read more

Superior Outdoor Designs built my deck originally almost 4 yrs ago and did an awesome job, took care of getting the city approval, and the deck looked great - I then later added on to the deck, and again had a very favorable experience...recently I had a few boards that appeared to have dry rot - filed a warranty claim with Superior, it was answered immediately and they took care of it immediately...dealing with Ryan, the owner, was a very favorable experience, and Josh in the office was very professional, courteous and helpful....overall, 5 star rating....thanks Superior.. Two salespeople came to our house and attempted to pressure us to agree to the patio remodel that day. We made it clear that we were only interested in an estimate. They continued to pressure us stating that they wanted to know what our price range was and that they would work within that. We repeated that we wanted an estimate and did not give them a price. Then, one of the guys said the line that made us shake their hands, tell them good-bye and walk away: Is there any reason that you wouldn't want to sign an agreement today? Do yourself a favor: skip this outfit and their high pressure sales team. read more

You Be the Judge? Signed contract on Jun 5th to have shade sail installed over spa. Two days later, own of company stopped by to take measurements. Said it would take 2/3 weeks for sail to come in and then a couple of days to build enclosure and install sail. Fast forward 60 days. Did not receive text, email or calls from contractor during this period. Hand delivered cancellation letter to business address. Asked that they have owner contact me to explain why they ignored our business...no response! Just reinforced my "no-trust" in contractors! read more

This is a personal opinion based off of two different personal experience. Buyer beware for Superior Outdoor Design! On two occasions I have had Superior build a pergola for us. The first time was rocky to say the least. What we were told would take a week took nearly three. The carpenter on the job routinely showed up late, sat in his truck and milked the clock on his bosses time. The final straw was when the carpenter and his underage helpers were drinking beer on our patio before the job was even completed. We went off on the company owner who made it damn difficult to get in touch with him. They did compensate us by paying for part of the staining of the structure. At the time we chocked it up to Covid being hard on everyone and moved on. We went back to them a second time thinking everyone deserves a second chance. As it turns out, no, that's just the way they do business. They pushed us to start the build right before Christmas saying it would be done in two days. We told them what we wanted, trusting in their ability to do their job. Apparently there was a miscommunication that I maintain was on there designers part. When we noticed the discrepancy we had them stop and fix it. The designer even told us it was his mistake and they will fix it. Then they told us they would be back on the job first thing Monday. Monday comes with no call, no show, all morning. We find out that afternoon the guys not coming because he's still out of town. Glad I didn't waste my day off sitting around with my parents visiting from the east coast.. oh wait I did. Look their product and warranty are great, there customer service and project management suck so bad that, In my opinion, it's not worth the headache! read more

Scheduled an appointment at my home a month ago. Sales person showed up and appeared to be interested in the project. A few weeks went by, and I never received a quote. I called the office and the person answering had some "notes" stating that they followed up with me, but I didn't wish to proceed with the project. Unfortunately, that was a lie, and nobody ever followed up with me. Not sure what kind of games this company is playing, or who the owner is, but his employees are certainly not being truthful about their business. Glad I didn't go with them! read more

So in December of this past year we decided we wanted to go ahead and build on our covered patio to match the existing house and roof. We had Superior Design come out and we explained what we wanted to the 2 sales people who came out. They were very knowledgeable, asked alot of questions like what our budget was, how we planned to use the patio, what we're our must haves, etc. With all this in mind they came up with a patio that fit our needs in our budget! Awesome! Construction was started and all went well. Now, included in our patio was a slab that extended across our back yard half covered and half uncovered. (Their idea to cut cost) we agreed and it was poured. It looked beautiful and we were happy until it rained and all the water pooled right in front of our back door. This is due to a low spot in the slab. So we called them they came out and decided that making a fine channel in the cement would be the solution (yes...cutting up our brand new slab). However, the guys who came out did not know what they were doing and "destroyed" our brand new slab. The worst part is instead of telling us anything they just left. We had to call the owner to get them to come out. It took over 3 attempts and from December to April to get it corrected. Eventually it came out beautiful and now functions correctly, but it was a grueling process and they lose stars for that. In the future we would use them for construction but not for cembt work. They had to change workers 3 different times and even then it was not a comfortable experience. They had great customer service in the beginning when things were going well we got phone calls to update the progress, to check in on us etc. Impressive! Well the moment we were unhappy and had a problem with the slab, we got no return calls, no updates, unsure responses, it was also the reason we went directly to the owner who got it sorted and took care of business. Again,the final product is great and what we hoped for (and paid for) but the experience itself certainly left a poor impression. read more

We have missing nails, screws sticking out of some wood pieces, gaps in the structure, and splits in some of the wood because of the screws. They are terrible! read more

Like a previous review I read on yelp about Superior, they are pressure sales, first of all we just moved into our home and wanting estimates to design our back yard, 12x18 slab and a 12x12 cedar deck. The salesman shows up while I have the TV installers and a closet remodel going on, ok no problem we can multi task, the superior sales guy repeatedly kept asking "I can come back if you don't have time today" we finally said we are listening as he stumbled through his pitch he finally started turning this pitch into a used car salesman telling me the price is $16k but with a 20% discount and if we sign today it is a "Today Only" price. I told him we do not make emotional or impulse financial decisions for that amount of money without getting estimates, he immediately got defensive made a call to his manager and came down $1300 more, I told him once again "Sorry but not today" he stood up from my table and began getting snarky with me and disrespectfully laughed and walked out of my house before he was kicked out. I am in Business Development for a living, and whomever is training these employees to go into peoples homes and pitch this way will not make it in business very long. So if you are looking to get a quote from this company just be aware of what might be coming! read more

Let me start with BEWARE-DO NOT USE. Consider this fair warning for you will experience the worst ordeal in your life. It starts with an estimator that has no idea what he is doing. He will draw a picture of what your deck will look like without regard to a structurally sound product or attention to details. Superior has no skilled employees and subs out everything done. There is NO communication, direction, or information given to the subs. As issues come up, and they will, the owner will try to convince you that is the way it was designed. Therefore, with no direction, a flawed drawing, total failure to communicate, and make it up as you go attitude, you very likely will not get the deck you wanted. My experience on the project that was quoted to take 3 weeks, took over 3 months to complete with a destroyed backyard the entire time. There is no direction, they are incompetent, and will make this the most frustrating event in your life. read more

I agree with the high pressure sales team, unfortunately I went ahead and signed up because I wanted my hot tub installed and did not have the time to do it myself. They are nice guys, but they don't hire the best craftsmen to actually do the work. We had to do a number of reworks because the plans, etc were not followed. You have to stain your deck in order to not void your warranty, but they don't cover the stain under warranty and the stain only lasted about 7 months. Their response time is pretty good until you are paid in full and then it is spotty. Took about 2 months to get the answer on the deck stain when there were problems and they never came out to look at their handiwork, instead sent another person to try and sell me on paying for new stain. Lesson learned, if you can do it yourself, do it. read more

We called Superior Outdoor Designs to provide an estimate to build a patio cover for us. I had not read the reviews before calling them, but had I seen them, I would have known what was in store when they arrived to discuss the project. Adrian was the first to arrive. When asking about his experience, he said he had been with Superior Outdoor Designs for about 2 and a half months. He said he previously had worked for a car dealership here in town. I asked him about how the experience at a car dealership translated to the construction and design business. He mentioned that he had learned the construction business from a relative. Next to arrive was Dave. I do not know what Dave's experience is. After the initial introductions, Dave could not wait to ask what our budget was. He kept throwing numbers out like $350,000 and then $100,000. I informed Dave that we were talking with three contractors and would evaluate each proposal and then select the contractor that best met out needs. I said I could show him a picture of exactly what we are looking for and he could price that. Dave then became irritated and said he would not "shortcut his process" and if I was unwilling to announce an amount we were willing to spend, he could not help us. I helped him to the door. We will not do business with this company. They are definitely not, in my humble opinion, customer service oriented. read more

Me and my siblings bought our parents a gift, a nice deck or so we thought. However it was nightmare....the worst investment, the worst experience with the worst company ever!!! They will gauge your eyes out!!! Poor communication with their workers, then they throw their own workers under the bus (after they work hard for them). The workers are fine, but the owner is horrible! Ryan is supposedly in charge of the company, he claims to be a man of integrity but as you can see he LOVES to call out his employees on a public forum such as Facebook (go look) in a very non professional way, this illustrates his so called "genuine integrity" and the kind of man he really is. If he is ugly in public, what makes you think he is not ugly in private. He doesn't mind screwing over anyone, not his employees, not his customers, ect...as long as he profits, that's is all that matters! I was patient long enough with this company and all they do is blame their hard workers for their mistakes and take our money (which is WAY OVER PRICED)! I regret doing business with this company and I don't recommend them to anyone, not customers or possible employees! POOR company to work for and to do business with, YOU ARE BETTER OFF getting your deck done from another deck company or a guy off Craigslist! They have more integrity than the ownership of this company! read more
