Went here with some friends for a cooking class. Our theme was Tuscany and we had a wonderful time! They give you everything you need to cook. Some of the meals you're cooking are simpler than others. We had a pear arugula salad, bolognese, and olive oil cake on the menu. The chef and her crew were great! They took their time and explained everything to us. For the pasta, we actually made the noodles! Which was really cool! The whole experience was so much fun! You get to eat the food after you're done, but make sure you eat it because you cannot take the leftovers. Everything was yummy! Tip: you can BYOB! We brought our own bottle of wine! They don't charge a corkage fee and have glasses for you. I highly recommend a cooking class! Especially with friends or a date night. It was a lot of fun! We had a great experience at the Memorial location of Sur La Table for a dim sum cooking class. This was a Christmas gift from me to J. and was on a Sunday a bit after lunch. When we got to the class, it was completely full and we were paired with another couple. Among the 4 of us, we made potstickers filled with shrimp and pork, as well as bbq pork bao buns. Our instructor was great - I enjoyed his humor and he made the class lively! We were greeted with tea to sip on and the ingredients were prepped in advance with small containers of each sauce, veggies, mushrooms, etc. We took turns chopping, or whisking, or using the stand mixer. I learned some useful knife skills as well! It was fun learning how to fold the wonton wrappers as well as the dough for the bao buns. I appreciated the chance to learn multiple delicious recipes and we had a fun group! I would have appreciated more observation of making the bbq pork as that was pre-prepared, and going through the multiple ingredients we used as they were not labeled. That being said, we received recipe booklets so that we can try them on our own. We had a pause midway through the class during which the Sur La Table staff steamed our potstickers and bao buns and we browsed the store with our day-of discount. When we returned, I enjoyed sharing the delicious dim sum! We were pretty full towards the end but learned that we can't take any of the food out of the store due to any risk on the store which was a bummer. Nevertheless our group chowed down and finished our tasty meal! I enjoyed all the instructors and staff at this location and would certainly be open to coming back, though for a special occasion as their classes are on the pricey end. read more

The "hands on" experience is probably a 90% because somehow time runs out. In my case the dessert was handled by the chef's assistants which takes away from the entire prep process. You don't get to take with you anything home which is also a bummer. Oh and if you think you get your own ingredients to do the dish all on your own well...you don't it's a group of four people sharing, cutting, and prepping a dish. For the price I would expect my own meat, flour, spices, and everything else but no. However if you know how to work with others (which I know how to but I expected more) you'll have much fun. read more

We signed up for this cooking class and it should have been told to us ahead of time that the food that we made in class would not be able to be brought home with us or we would have scheduled it for another day. Wow I understand that they were unable to provide all of the ingredients to make them in you I guess because someone did not place the order correctly for provisions, the fact that we would not be allowed to bring home what we had made was not given to us either through the website, the ticketing process, the waiver we sign to cook in advance, or before beginning the class. I had a medical procedure which precluded me from being able to eat the night before. When booking it I just assumed we would bring home her items we had cooked and everything would be hunky-dory when I got home the next day from the hospital I would be able to eat our meal. When I contacted the manager I was told that if it was a different class we would have been able to but that class we attended that made the lobster ravioli was unable to be taken out of the store due to their licensing. These are all things that are easily handled as long as you clearly mark them on your website and ticketing information for the course but Sur La Table has been neglectful in there notifications on their website and will not give you this information so I am trying to share it with anybody who may be planning on taking a class. We did purchase items with our 10% class discount and we are currently enjoying those at our home. We love coming to this location for their cooking classes. Most of them have been really great experiences. We love the chefs that teach the classes and we have a lot of fun learning how to cook different dishes. The staff is always really friendly. We also usually have some time to shop. I will say that it's a little high and so the things in the store do cost a bit much but it's a nationwide chain. We really enjoy the classes and there's a good selection of different types of meals that you can cook. Highly recommend for a fun date night. read more

I have been really happy with the service given here .Their staff always asks if need help and gives good recommendations for culinary items without being pushy. Everything was going fine until I realized the chef should've evened out the people at the work stations. Table 1 - friends of 4, table 2 - 2 ladies that didn't come together, table 3 - friends of 3 and 2 ladies that didn't come together, table 4 - mother and young son. Tables had names and aprons at each station, so we didn't feel like we could change around. They should've evened the tables / work stations out so that everyone could've had more hands on work time. The point is hands on learning. In the end, each table split the cookies they made. This meant the table with 2 had a full box to take home and the tables with 4 and 5 barely had 3 each. Chef should've done a better job of making sure each table had 3 or more people. These cooking classes are not cheap. I mentioned something and the chef was quick to reply with a snarky remark. I drove an hour to get to this class. Very disappointed. read more

Sur La Table has always been on of my favorite kitchenware shops and places to take cooking classes, so I was excited to see when my Christmas presents was a giant box from Sur La Table. My family got me a Breville Barista Express - an amazing gift I was really excited to receive! But I live in NYC (not Houston) so I was a bit worried about how I'd get it home... either mailing it myself or checking it on the plane. The staff at Sur La Table really hooked us up. We brought the box back to the store, and they shipped it - for free - on UPS 2 day. It was extremely nice and really made it easy for us! I appreciated it so much. This review is for the cooking class only. I haven't shopped here much although my general opinion is that everything is beautiful but unnecessary and expensive. The only free parking I know of in the area is right next to Brio - 2nd floor and up is free. Although I'd much prefer it if you forgot that and/or didn't tell anyone. For $49, this is pretty expensive to be making eclairs. To be sure it wouldn't cost you nearly this much to get the ingredients especially if you choose to use regular vanilla extract instead of the vanilla bean that they've chosen to use here. You're placed in a group of 4 and the 4 of you work together to make one batch together. This means that you won't get to do all of it yourself which I feel is essential in learning how to make a dish - which is, after all, why we're here isn't it? As is normal with baking, there will often be discrepancies in how much of what you need. In this case there were sometimes not enough glaze for your eclair or too much filling for how many eclairs you'd made, etc. The downside of this is that you cannot make any more because you're not at home - you're at this class with these limited resources. I did appreciate the cheese and bread that they offered for free though. That was the best part of the class. TL;DR If you're coming to this to just 'get out of the house' then by all means go for it. If you're coming to actually learn something this isn't helpful. read more

I will never support this company ever in life again. I so happened to be there when a delivery driver showed up. I sparked up a conversation with them I just so happened to ask how much they pay you. To my shock, she responded they never tip. What a horrible company to be charging customers so much. They order every day without ever compensation to the person who goes out of their way to get things for this business. We took the Cooking With Wine class last Friday. It was our first cooking class and we enjoyed it! The food all turned out well (risotto, scallops, haricot verts) and I could see myself making these at home. The class comes with a 10% discount on your purchase which was also nice. There were a couple of things that prevented me from giving it a higher review. First, the class seemed a little disorganized, and I thought the instructor could've been more informative/energetic. Second, people in the class were put into groups of four to work on making the meal which didn't allow us to do too much. This was disappointing considering it was $75 per person to cook 1/4 of a simple meal. Third, there was no wine provided. It was marketed as a "Date Night" class, and I guess I should've thought about this beforehand but it would've been nice to get a glass of wine. read more

I bought a cooking class here since they were having a $45 sale for their anniversary! I thought it would be fun for me and the bf to learn some new dishes and tricks. The kitchen in the back of the store for classes is a bit small - I was disappointed to see that instead of a stove for each station, you get a mini gas stove you use for camping. I didn't think we really learned much here - it's more of a sales pitch than a cooking class cause you end up wanting to buy all the tools you used in class to bring home! I ended up with a basket of stuff myself =) We went to the Date Night: Evening in Paris class and made a Frisée Salad with Warm Goat Cheese and Champagne-Shallot Vinaigrette, a Herb Marinated Steak with Roquefort Butter, Pomme Frites Dusted with Truffle Salt, and a Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee for dessert. I get it, they only have a 2 hour time frame to have us cook and people will complain if they don't get to eat by a certain hour BUT I felt like we barely cooked at all. You are in a group of 4 and you take turn doing things, so you may end up chopping once and stirring ingredients in once the whole night. We started off with the Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee, which they measured out all the ingredients for you already so you take turns pouring everything into a pot, mixing and bringing it to a boil. If I can get all my ingredients pre-measured for me at home, it'll be wonderous! =) What I did learn was the technique of "tempering" your whisked egg yolks into the custard so that it didn't curdle! Lesson 1. They took your mixture for you and poured it into little ramekins and baked it in a water bath for you.. so we didn't get to see any of the behind the scene stuff for this. They did allow us to put sugar on top and brulee the sugar after they were done. Lesson 2. The bf did like playing with the torch! Another thing we need to purchase so we can make this at home! We chopped up shallots to make the champage-shallot vinaigrette - which was mixing pre-measured ingredients and whisking the oil into the champage vinegar last! We also chopped up herbs and shallots for mixing into the Roquefort butter. I liked both the salad and the butter but it wasn't anything I couldn't do at home with a recipe. The whisking to emulsify the oil into the vinegar was lesson 3. The steak was sous vide and seasoned already so all we had to do was sear it on the cast iron... It didn't end up with a seared flavor - they were trying to cut the time it took to cook the thick steak but we skipped the seasoning and the cooking of the main entree in this meal! Boo! We didn't touch the french fries at all, it was done by the assistants because it took too long. They just made everything and served it to us - wasn't even dusted with truffle salt!!! I was disappointed cause I love truffles!!! Overall, I learned maybe a total of 3 techniques in this class. They give you a break between cooking so they can clean the kitchen and prepare it for the meal.. but mostly so that you can browse the store and buy things.. Good marketing technique! The classes are BYOB and you can bring a bottle of wine split between a party of 2 - they frown if you bring anymore than this for liability reasons =) They don't want you drunk while trying to cook and playing with flames/knives! I think it was an okay class but you learn very minimal. It was a fun experience but next time I may look for a more specific course with a more hands on element to it. read more

We attended the "date night New Year's Eve" cooking class last night, and I must say I was a bit disappointed... The steak was very TOUGH, and at times it was difficult to see what the chef was doing... In the past we have taken the festive bread cooking class, and totally enjoyed it and gave that class 5 stars...we are not giving up on these cooking classes as we find them fun however we are steering towards the baking classes as we find those more hands on. read more

The "Authentic Thai at Home" cooking class was excellent and so much fun! I went to the one at City Centre. The food was great: grilled lemongrass shrimp with cucumber peanut salad, chicken with cashews, and Pad Thai, followed by coconut-lime sorbet over grilled bananas for dessert. Portions were very generous (I left full). The class is divided into small teams, and the chef gives individual and group coaching as we cook. When I think Thai food, I think really, really hot peppers. It's so much more than that. Getting the right blend of textures and balance of subtle flavors isn't easy.; the food was better than any Thai restaurant food I've ever had. It takes a lot of man hours for he staff to prep the food and clean up after us, but that's what makes the class run so smoothly. And my favorite part is $20 off your next cooking class is you sign up right after class. read more

My husband and I have been talked about taking a cooking class together and we found a perfect occasion for such event. We came here for the Classic French food night for the husband's birthday celebration. Although we had fun and the food was good, I don't think for what we paid, it was worth the money. For those that never been to a cooking class (like we were), you and your partner will be partner up with another couple. Only one (out of the four of you) will actually do the cooking. The rest can prep food or watch. The whole class is about an hour and half so some of the dishes are prep/cooked by the chef's assistants in the back. The class is very fast pace for us. You do get a break in between two main dishes. We had Chef Smilee; she was very lively and funny. She seems to know what she was doing and will walk around to check on your progress. Overall, for what they're charging, I wish each couple would have their own cooking station (so everyone can experience the actual cooking) and the pace is a little bit slower. read more

This review pertains largely to a "French Bistro" themed cooking class that I took as part of a group reserved class. The room was set up neatly, and the first course - which we did not prepare - was set out. However as we started getting into the lesson, I found the instructor barked at us frequently and pretty unabashedly acted like the uncool substitute teacher of a 4th grade class. Remember that trick subs would pull: deliberately and huffily waiting until the room was dead silent before instructing? That was THIS instructor's favorite tool. Know what DOESN'T happen when drinking with people you know? Quiet, of any nature. It was really, really frustrating. That instructor had zero chill. As a result, the courses we made were half-effort, under-informed flops that no one really touched. I'll revert to my favorite Central Market classes, thanks. One redeeming factor: 15% off merchandise in-store. Because that really makes dropping $200 on silicone mats and pumpkin-themed ceramic dishes worth it. Ish. read more

I love cooking and used to frequent Williams Sonoma to check out their cooking gadgets, sur la table is like Williams Sonoma but a bit more on the fun side with cooler kitchen gadgets. However, having taken a macaron class here I would say the experience was less than stellar. While the class was very interactive and fun, the baking techniques was incredibly flawed. No one in the class produced perfect macarons, all of them were either too chewy, burnt or no feet. The instructor blamed it on this and that but come on now... I've baked a fair share of macarons in different environments and they've all turned out a lot better than the the techniques offered in this class. I wanted to see what a true macaron class would offer me but sadly this isn't it. Oh well. read more

I'm not unexperienced in the kitchen by any means, but there were still a good number of items that I was unfamiliar with or would have liked to learn about in order to up my kitchen game. I was super disappointed with their macaroon class. 1. $75 is really over priced especially when you work in a 4 person group. So you don't have as much hands on practice or many macaroon to take home. 2. The chef was really unfriendly and bossy. Not sure why we paid to be treated like this. Her macaroon didn't turn out very good either. And there's not much more she teach you than what you could learn from YouTube. 3. For people who really want to learn the technique. This new City Center location is the best one I've been to yet! The store is gorgeous as always, and the staff is not only friendly but knowledgable. The cooking classes are so much fun - I took a edilbe gift making class, and we got so much more than we paid for. You get to take home a ton of goodies, and eat load of yummines while you are there... and complimentary tea and coffee! It's all good, rich food so just relax about it or go across to the gym afterwards, it's worth it! I love this location - the store is my perfect answer for gift shopping, for anyone! read more

We were in the area and I wanted to check this place out since my husband loves to cook. I thought that it might offer something different come Christmas time. This is like Williams Sonoma's younger sibling who thinks that while the oldest is smart, they are also stuffy and boring. I get the feeling on walking in here that it's about showing how much "fun" the kitchen can be. For example, robot shaped ice cube trays and microplanes in a variety of colors! The other feeling I get is that I could purchase the majority of the items here elsewhere for half the price. For example, there were these really colorful plates near the door that had a bit of a southern or southwestern theme to them. I picked them up and realized they were a really light, cheap plastic - and $7 each! The white ceramic plates of about the same size were $5 each. This place is also mainly filled with what Alton would call "unitaskers". The only big positive was probably the knife section. They had the brand we use and we got a replacement for a knife that was lost in our set. The shop itself was probably about the same size as the nearby "older brother" shop, but it felt a bit smaller. It also felt very cluttered and disorganized. I would maybe go back for a cooking class, but if we needed an item for the kitchen? We'd probably go back to their older brothers place. There's less traffic there and it's easier to find what you need rather than what they want you to buy. read more

Rolling out of bed early on a Saturday morning not my thing when I have to drive an hour to attend class, for macaroons I did it. Would much rather be making them in Paris where I consumed as much as I could thus my passion for this class. Bloody Marys, cheap champagne, history about macaroons, would have been a nice touch with a dash of panache, not happening here. Chef was ok, nothing special. Unless you have Trump $ read the sign by the curb or you be paying $25 to park your ride. Luckily I had a 30 minute wait for the store to open so I read the sign. For a $69 class I expected much more, and in the future I will go to only a culinary school. The class was overbooked, cramped to stand for 3 hours and difficult to interact, did not want to leave with macaroons that others had touched. IMO poor presentation to walk around the room grab 3 macaroons that someone else has made (not sure about sanitation) throw it in a zip lock bag and head out, did use the 10% coupon to buy heavy duty grilling trays, won't come back to this location for a class, might try another location. Same instruction on you tube. Had previously bought the macaroon kit and mixes and liked the ones I made. Understand now the cost of one macaroon is $3, due to the labor intensiveness. read more

I signed up for a class with my two daughters. We arrived early, but did not know that we should have "staked our claim" before given instructions, because others did this and by the time we tried to find a place at the cooking table, all three of us were split up. You work in groups of 4. Fortunately a lady moved so I could be with one of my daughters, but my other daughter was in a totally different group. It was a very cramped space. Between the 4 people in the group, only one person gets to do a task--not all 4 of you. So 2 people might be doing something, while the other 2 watch. Then you can switch off for the next task. It was OK, but not ideal, and certainly not what I had in mind. read more

Wonderful Time! A new family Christmas tradition! This was a great night out for our family. You work four to a station (this location had 4 stations), and you follow the instructors guide lines as you cook whatever sort of evening you choose. You split up the cooking activities amongst your group, and taste as you go. Then, you get to enjoy your full meal at the end! I recommend the Italian class. We made a salad, chicken marsala with a side dish, and a delicious desert! TIPS FOR SUCCESS: ** BRING WINE *** They don't tell you, but they provide wine classes for you to bring one bottle per two people. This, combined with the fun atmosphere and pleasant teachers, makes for a really fun evening for all! **You also get a 10% discount for all store merchandise for the remainder of the day after your class, as well as $20.00 off any future class you book after your initial class. read more

While the concept was cool, the cooking class was not worth $85 per person. My wife and I signed up for the "Date Night" cooking class. There were way too many people crammed into the kitchen. Groups were left with people standing around doing nothing while others prepared/cooked food. Also, I was hoping to learn new cooking techniques or ideas. The "chef" merely rattled off instructions from a sheet of paper. A simpleton like me could have easily taught that class! :-P Again, the idea is pretty cool for date night, but save yourself the $85/person and impress your significant other with a couple of good steaks and a nice bottle of wine from HEB. read more
