I was a member at this Planet Fitness location for over two years. During that time, I parked my…read moreelectric bike in the mall corridor just outside the gym entrance -- visible, out of the way, and never an issue. Eventually, mall security approached me with concerns. After a constructive conversation, I was told I could relocate the bike inside the gym, and I received explicit permission from gym staff to do so. However, on my next visit, I was publicly harassed by two patrons -- one shouted insults at me, and the other threatened to physically remove my bike. This all happened in front of staff, who did nothing to step in or address the behavior. Instead, they told me to remove my bike from the premises. I chose to cancel my membership -- not out of anger, but because I no longer felt welcome or safe in that environment. I also reached out to mall management, but received no response. Disappointed in how a situation involving clear communication and staff permission was mishandled, and how quickly it shifted into an uncomfortable and hostile experience.

I paid him in advance for training sessions that didn't take place. After cancelled appointments by him and weather issues, he told me he had to rethink his priorities and would be refunding my money. It has been over two months and no money has been returned. I have texted him, emailed him, messaged him, called him and even sent a certified letter. No response. I thought this was someone I could trust and had a good working relationship with. The money I paid him was not enough to file suit over but enough to but a dent in my budget and not getting the services I paid for. Not sure what my options are at this point.

The upstairs is mostly wasted space with a couple ab machines, same lame aerobics DVDs, and the tanning bed. It's nice that there is a shower downstairs, which doesn't seem to get used ever. I prefer to get the sweat off me ASAP, especially in the winter when it is obviously not advisable to step putside when completely drenched. It's great that it is open 24 hours, but going at night is a little dicey. The parking lot is dimly lit, and there is usually nobody anywhere else around. Though Ames is generally a safe place, I would never allow my wife to go alone. I did ride my bike here a few times, but it's not recommended. There is no real bike path to speak of, so you have to share with cars; not great after sun down. I have never seen it packed. The most people I have seen inside were maybe six, and most machines are available no matter what time of day you show up. Pricing is pretty decent, and it gets you in to ANY anytime fitness in the US (and apparently a couple outside of the US) for the price of admission. Admission is cheaper here, at about $30 per month than at other Anytime fitnesses we looked at, so that is also a plus. Would I recommend this? It depends on what you are looking for. We needed a place with some treadmills and ellipticals to use to get out of acclimate weather. Being able to go to a nearby anytime fitness when we travel was also a bonus. If you are a student, or are looking for a REAL grade A gym, the ISU newly rebuilt in 2011 gym is the place to go.
