Surf Cinemas is the sole remaining movie theater in Brunswick County. Frank Theaters Coastal Stadium 10 in Shallotte sustained damage during Hurricane Florence and has yet to reopen. So unless you venture to Wilmington (New Hanover county) or Myrtle Beach (Horry County), this tiny theater in Southport, NC is your only option. And what a nice option it is. Matinee prices (movies before 6:00 pm) are only $5. Evening films are $7, and seniors over age 65 pay just $6. The excellent prices extend to concessions as well, with a large popcorn topping out at $4.75. The theaters are small, but the seats are fairly comfortable with ample leg room, wide arm rests and cupholders. Screen and sound quality are quite good as well. Surf Cinemas shows current films, and they have the pre-movie entertainment and bazillion previews just like the bigger multiplexes. While the building is small, it is efficient. A long, narrow counter takes up most of the "lobby" area, where two employees will take your ticket and concession orders. Two theaters flank each side of the counter, and the rest rooms are located opposite the theater entrances on each side of the front entrance. There's only about ten feet or so from the entrance to the counter, so the line can grow long and out the door. It moves quickly, but you may want to arrive earlier than usual, especially for a new release or if you like to sit near the back. I went to an afternoon showing on a Thursday and the last six rows were completely filled fifteen minutes prior to curtain. read more

Unbelievable. We got there 30 minutes before the movie was to start and waited in line for 45 minutes. Finally, we gave up and left. Apparently, there were only two people working. They were both behind the concession stand selling tickets and concessions at the same time. The line barely moved the whole time we were waiting there. Never going there again! read more

If you live around Southport or are visiting you have a great chance to see movies for a fraction of the price you will pay at other cinemas. The reviews of this place being dirty well I have just not noticed, yes the seats are old, the carpets are old, the building is old, but none of that means it is dirty. The popcorn is fresh and if you fancy a double header you can see two movies back to back with free refills on the large adult combos. Living in the UK we pay even more than you will pay in the more modern Wilmington or Shallotte cinemas so when we get the chance to visit a cinema for less than $25 with large popcorn and large drinks included we normally take it. The only down side I have ever seen in here is the patrons, I have been to horror or action/adult humor movies that should be for adults and there have been very young kids in the screening, not sure what the rules are in the US but really this is down to the parents that they are at the cinema with. My wife and I like to go to the late shows here on Friday or Saturday nights when our kids are in bed and would not expect kids under 10 in some of the movies we have been to but that has happened. All in all a great little place, we visited Southport from Scotland a couple of times a year and probably spend about 6-8 weeks a year here, Surf Cinemas is a great wee place for us to escape to for date night when the kids are with grammie. read more

Dirty, disgusting and smelly. I wanted to walk out, didn't even care about the tickets we just bought, but hubby gave me that look... come on.. you can do it... The seats were so nasty, exactly every one in the theater was stained beyond filthy. I see folks going here when I drive past and don't understand how they could possibly sit their self down in there. I just as soon drive to Wilimington then ever go here again. Really nice seats in the theater (the lobby & exterior don't give the theater justice) ... the lobby gets crowded quickly when you have to buy your ticket at the concession area. The sign for the concession prices could be bigger (small sign on counter - the prices do flash up on a rotating flatscreen TV that advertised other things). For a small town theater it was pretty efficient. I had ample arm and leg room. It was a tad bit dirty, just your usual soda spills and popcorn, but nothing extreme. It only has 4 screens so definitely call in first to get movies and times. It's by automated voice message for the whole week. I saw Secret Life of Pets so there were a lot of kids, plus it was a matinee so the theater was full. A daycare came in right as the movie was about to start, and they were very rowdy. Other than that it was a pleasant experience. Sound and visuals of the movie were normal. read more

So, Oak Island is a small place. This tiny little theater has stadium seating, decent-smelling popcorn and makes for an enjoyable beach trip date. While the selections are limited, if they have a movie you're interested in, they seem to offer quite a few screening times, which is convenient, given that days at the beach are a bit spontaneous. read more

I'm in Wilmington and I will drive down to this theater for the price. Not only are the tickets only $6-7 but you can get a large popcorn and two large drinks for $8.50. Are you kidding me? Two tickets and that food would cost you at least $40 at a regular theater. The popcorn is also made fresh and not sitting in a warmer like the bigger chains. The staff is friendly and the theater is old but clean. Also, I went today and they have put all new seats in a couple of the theaters. They're wonderful and the leg room is massive. Quite honestly I have only had great experiences with this cinema for almost 4 yrs. since 2013. The prices are very, very reasonable, like $6-$7 and the popcorn is FRESH and the deals are awesome. My wife and I can go to a movie and have the special deal with Popcorn/Drink for a total of 'LESS than $20'-it's amazing and hope they never change. There are two ways to review a place like this. The first, and most useless in my opinion, is to compare it to every other theater I've been to. On that scale, it's maybe a 2.5-3 out of 5. But a more useful method in my view is to judge the place on its own terms. How good is this place at being a small-town, slightly divey cinema? I'd put this closer to 4-4.5 on that basis. I've seen two movies at this theater in two different visits- Inception in 2010, and Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 (both in 2D). And both times, my experience was fine. Picture and sound were good quality (and these were movies that would be made a lot worse with a poor projection), and the seats were comfortable. I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about with the place being dirty- it was perfectly clean (both the theater and restrooms) both times, and there was no smell other than popcorn. I saw these Yelp reviews and quizzed my wife afterward (her cleanliness standards are higher than mine), and she confirmed it was fine. For Inception in 2010, we had her parents in tow, and they didn't complain either. All in, we got two tickets and concessions for $17, and it was a fine experience for the money. read more

In the winter they only have 2 showings in their 4 theatres, around 4:00 and 6:00, I guess because it is a small retirement area. They have more for the summer crowd. Workers are all kids who care less. I went to a movie there probably 3 years ago and was irritated about a stain on the screen that looked like someone had thrown a drink at it.
