I was expecting high prices at a grocery store on the beach, but was surprised by this little IGA. They had everything I needed and the prices were reasonable. I even found Southern specialties that I love and had been craving including stone ground grits and pimento cheese. The store is neat, tidy and well-organized. They carry all meats except fresh seafood. Most of the vegetables looked very fresh (except the cucumbers). The clerk was jovial and efficient. A second clerk was proactively helpful. 5 Star service. Surf City IGA comes in clutch for anything you need (basics) while in Topsail. This was my first time in Topsail, and being a newbie and quite midwestern, there were a few things I left behind. I ended up grabbing some beach essentials here, snacks, and some drinks. They have truly anything you need for a successful beach visit. We went twice during our visit. It is still the Red and White to me! First time in the store was 1964. Sonny, Joanne and Tim the butcher and the rest of the crew are great people. Always well stocked and Tim's chuck is incredible for burgers. It's busy in the peak season, but it is still my go to given its 3 minutes from home. This place is such an old school grocery store and I mean that in a great way. If you're a tourist in the area. Don't go to the big market stores. Come here, this place accommodates literally a large majority of everything you need with the variable prices in your budget. Great liquor prices too! read more

Great store! Definitely small but the only grocery on the island. Good selection. The staff is always amazing. So friendly. They have been wearing masks during this COVID situation before it was required and practicing social distancing. We have been very impressed with them. read more

I've been coming to IGA with my family for years, when I was younger the options were limited for groceries on Topsail. You had Godwin's for a quick stop, you had IGA for a better selection than Godwin's, and if you had the time you'd head to Food Lion for the best selection. Though back then there was a turning bridge that sometimes impacted how long it would take to get to Food Lion, so IGA was often the quicker choice. Now the turning bridge is gone and both Walmart and Publix have come to Surf City. So the options have increased dramatically, leaving IGA a less appealing choice for grocery shopping. My family and I still stopped by to grab a few items and support the store since we've been shopping there for decades, and the quality of their meat selection is good, but we found ourselves shopping primarily at Publix on this vacation. read more

The best old school supermarket! I'm a local and can always count on the IGA to have what I need. When we had the infamous 2022 hot sauce debacle where Siracha was NOWHERE to be found, the IGA came through. Super convenient, small grocery store right in the central part of Surf City's business district. When I visited upon arrival to the area, I found it to be much better than I had expected, with a wide variety of items to choose from, and very fresh options for fruits and vegetables. Most importantly, the beer and wine selection was pretty impressive, and there were lots of choices for vacay foods. I am sure that in the Summertime, it gets crowded and can be a bit rough - probably like the rest of the places in this nice little NC beach town. We will be making it the go-to place for our family whenever we are in town. Oh, and I kept looking for drunk employees staggering around the place, but alas - they must have been in the back, crashed out. Everyone I saw working there was friendly and apparently sober, doing their jobs well. read more

Worst supermarket on the Island, but it's also the only one. If you can't drive to Food Lion across either of the two bridges, you are a fool. I've never seen it less than mad-house busy! What a racket! They mostly sell dry goods. read more

We stayed in Top Sail for the 4th of July weekend and were lucky enough to have this place close by - without having to go back across the bridge, near the other grocery stores (Walmart, Food Lion, etc). They had had all the basic needs for a weekend beach getaway (charcoal, cereal, sandwich stuff, snacks) and even had a nice little craft beer selection (Uinta Hop Nosh and 21st Amendment were the 2 that I remember). The prices were slightly marked up, but not as badly as the little convenience stores. One thing to note: the place can be easily missed due to lack of obnoxious signage that we've all become accustomed to. It's right across the street from the Exxon Mobile gas station at the only stop light in Surf City. read more

The IGA supermarket is a mainstay of Surf City's grocery loving population. You're not going to get a huge selection or Cartier of foods, but if you're on vacation, you just needs the basics. The atmosphere is dated, but the people working are nice. read more

Family owned but very poor management. Drinking on the job, coming to work still drunk. Managers don't care about working conditions.

Best place to purchase meat. They also often carry fresh local produce. We live on the island so it's great to have so close!
