I hadn't surfed for about 6 months and needed to brush up on my skills when I got back into the water. I decided to take a surf lesson with Esteban who has been my coach for the past 4 years. Surfing with Esteban in Nosara, Costa Rica has been a dream come true. I asked him to help boost my surf confidence and my technique to catch more waves, and was so happy when he came out to Costa Rica to support me with my goals. He showed me how to understand where each wave is breaking and how to position myself safely in the lineup. I wanted to find a great coach to help me tackle on my biggest goal this year: learning how to surf! If I was going to invest money in lessons, they should be from someone who knows how to TEACH! Esteban isn't just some surfer guy who takes you out onto the water. He is a technical, patient, and truly encouraging teacher! Surfing is pretty damn difficult and it frustrates me at times because I want to get good at it as soon as possible due to my own ego. This sport is humbling! I don't have the best balance or coordination in the world but with Esteban's training, I have gotten up onto the board several times already! I've taken two lessons with Esteban so far and can feel myself get a bit more confident in the water even while the tide was getting higher. He gives constructive criticism during and after your rides on what needs improvement and shows you exactly how to do it so you can get better. It's just up to us to get out of our heads and execute! But he really will take the time to explain how and drill simple instructions quite a bit so you can remember the steps as you get up onto the board. He even saves your butt by waiting for the right wave just so you don't tumble with your board trying to catch a wave at the wrong time. Do yourself or your child a favor and sign them up for surf lessons with Esteban. He is by far the best out there. I took my daughter years ago to another surf school, and it was awful. Esteban loves what he does, and your child will feel it through his instruction. He made is simple and fun. My son wants to go every day now. He never surfed before, and I was afraid he just wouldn't love it, but he loved all of it. It really has so much to do with who is teaching. Awesome! My 13 year old son and I were visiting Los Angeles for a couple of days. On a whim, we decided to take a surfing lesson. Neither one of us had ever surfed before. Esteban was a fantastic teacher...and safe. He began with a brief but important talk about safety. Next he taught us the basics with our boards on the sand. The next step was in the water, with him at our side the whole time. After a couple of attempts, we both stood up on small waves. It was so cool. My son had a huge smile on his face.
