This place is not authentic Thai or any traditional Thai food I have ever had,l. The menu gives me a Chinese feel. I had the coconut soup which was labeled as spicy coconut soup with a description of containing sweet and sour. When it came out it was lumpy from the powered coconut milk mix and had little to no tase. Basically water downed coconut milk powder. I also had the Thai noddles which I was told was their version of Pad Thai. When it came out it appeared to be sweet and sour syrup mixed with sugar. After touring the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and enjoying the Japanese gardens, we were starving and hankering for some Asian cuisine. Yelp led us here, and I'm so happy it did. This place is so good! The parking here is dicey sometimes, so find the lot just behind the restaurant that is a dedicated parking space for this restaurant. A short walk through a well-lit alleyway leads you to the restaurant. We went at an off time, after the normal lunch rush, and only found about 5 tables full. The restaurant was quiet, which was perfect for us. We were seated quickly and helped by the nicest waitress. Service was impeccable our entire visit. We ordered Thai teas all around, which were strong and not too sweet. So refreshing! The appetizers were incredible. We sampled Dim Sum, dainty dumplings filled with a mixture of pork, chicken and shrimp. These were so delicious! I loved all of the different textures of the meats. The egg rolls were perfectly crispy and fried to perfection with a tender and flavorful interior. The crab angels were like a crab rangoon, but this is the best version I've had, so creamy and tender. For lunch, I chose a lunch special of Khoa Man Gai. This is crispy tempura chicken strips with a garlic ginger sauce with white rice. The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned flavorfully. The dipping sauce made my mouth pucker, in a good way! It came with a bowl of Tofu coconut soup that was amazing, and I'm not a fan of tofu. For the quality of food we received, I felt like this was a well-priced restaurant. I went here with a group and I was so happy with our service and our food. We were staying at a hotel down the hill and we were able to walk up the hill to the restaurant. (They also have parking space behind the restaurant dedicated for them). It is located in the five points entertainment district! We had 8 people in our group and they were able to seat us all at a table in the 2nd room. I even was able to use my $10 off $40 from YELP. What a bonus. The waitress was very helpful and accommodated all the requests. We had a variety of foods from the rolls to salad to pad thai and more. Some people ordered thai bbq chicken, coconut soup, sashimi and more. We also had Dim Sum, dumplings filled with a mixture of pork, chicken and shrimp. I used to live Surin but it's been probably 15 years since I've been back... it's changed. And not for the better. We started with the Baskets. These were disassembled - 6 bite-sized cups, a chicken and corn "mash" and a sweet vinegar sauce. It tasted better than it looked (it looked more like canned tuna with corn). We all ordered the chicken spicy coconut soup. Why do Thai restaurants in Alabama have such dry chicken?? This hasn't been my experience anywhere else, including in Thailand. The mushrooms and broth were good - but the chicken wasn't. The green onions / cilantro were non-existent. We ordered 3 sushi rolls - and didn't finish any of them. * bagel role: this is why people don't like lox. It was super-fishy smelling, lacked any flavor and too much cream cheese. Again, missing the scallions. * super crunch: this has been a stable at Surin for the last 20 years. I do t know if it's changed or my memory of it has. But I wouldn't order it again. * wasabi maki: the sauce is like a gooey mess. The variety of fish should make this roll delicious. But nope. Slimy old product. We didn't eat more than 1 piece each. Finally we tried the Thai Noodle with shrimp and chicken. It was a mushy example of Pad Thai. There were 2 shrimp and more dry chicken. The highlight was our server. She was all smiles and quick to refill our water (and the reason why this review is 2 stars). Other sushi spots around town didn't have a table - which is how we ended here. We were in a party room that went from a reserved 20 ppl... to 30 within the hour. Not fun but throw a food runner/manager on it. Took 30 min to get sodas but 10 min for 4 cocktails. Finally went to the host stand after the wait for sodas and the nicest waiter helped us and ended up being the second waiter in our party. The manager spoke like he was blown away 10 more people showed up. IMHO even in a private event (which something always happens) of anything over 14, their should always be 2 waiters or a trainee/asst wait staff. First and foremost, Our server gets a 2 thumbs up! They were patient with our large group of 12 people - including 7 children! We were seated in a convenient corner - nestled away from others. This made it easy for us to wrangle the children and be loud without disturbing others. We came after visiting the nearby zoo, so the kids were a mix of hyper and lethargic. The food came out reasonably fast. We ordered appetizers , entrees, desserts and specialty beverages. I didn't hear one complaint amongst the group of particular eaters. The server answered every question and didn't forget the details. I was able to get an off menu item - a hot dessert coffee. They should definitely add this as a regular item. My last review wasn't all that great due to the food I received but I've since gone back a few times and each time has been better. I hate that I've discovered all gems of what to eat now that I no longer work close by. The coconut soup IS TO DIE FOR. If you dine in during lunch you get a cup free but it's so good no matter when you go try it. I went Friday for dinner with my partner and she loved it so much we went back today (Tuesday) before her flight out. I had the Ka Proud Lamb with Shrimp Fried Rice. I asked for it to be cooked medium. My food was quite good but I was disappointed in the cut of the lamb chops. They were literally one bite each and I was given 4 bones. That was quite sad. The rice was good and it comes with 2 big shrimp in it. The sauce that it's served with can either be too salty or too sweet so taste it first before pouring it on your food. She had the Garlic Scallops. Her food was delicious. The scallops were HUGE and cooked perfectly. She had no complaints at all. The veggies it was served with were fresh and and steamed to her liking. She didn't love that her dish came with white rice and she ended up eating half of mine but she was very impressed with Surin as this was her first visit here. We both ordered drinks. She had a dirty martini and I had a pear - grapefruit martini (I think) and they were not made for the weak. We loved them. Came here for the first time with friends last night to have a get together as well as celebrate of one our birthdays. We all shared many appetizers: egg rolls, fried squid, surin baskets, pork loin, dim sum, and had a taste of each others entrees: pad see u, spicy beef noodle, green curry, red masaman curry, and chicken curry. The place is located in five points south, so its a nice spot with many other restaurants and bars nearby to venture around. Inside, it's quite a large restaurant with ample seating space. Staff were friendly and inviting. Overall, food was decent, cocktails were good. The appetizer dishes were pretty good, portions were good for sharing. Surin baskets was an interesting dish but good. We visited Surin West on a Sunday Night. We had never tried this location, and hadn't been to a Turin in years. Nothing else was really open on Sunday that we wanted so we thought it was a great time to try. They were wearing masks and seating table a proper social distance apart. We were seated immediately. The host handed everyone an appetizer plate. The one he was about to put down in front of me was dirty, he picked it right up and got me a different one. We started with the Edamame App and the Dim Sum. The edamame came out perfect, great level of salt, hot, and a nice portion. The dim sum took a while. We heard our server tell the table by us that that app took the longest to make. It ended up coming out and was hot and absolutely delicious. From there we moved to entrees. We had the Scallops. It came with a large portion. 8 Large scallops. They were cooked nicely, but were not seasoned well. They were lacking in the flavor department. They did serve them with a dipping sauce that was very very good. So I ended up dipping my scallops in that to give them flavor. It was good, but you shouldn't have to dip scallops in sauce to enjoy them. A couple of them were not properly cleaned, they still had shell on them that I ended up biting into. From there we had some yellowtail Nigiri. It was prepared nicely, Large cuts. The fish could have been fresher, but not bad at all. We had the Vegetarian sushi roll. It was delicious. Then comes the strange one. We had the sweet and sour chicken. Granted, it was bad. It was literally just Chicken fingers with red sauce to dip them in. Their classic items like Coconut Soup, Chicken Satay, Pad See Ew, Pad Thai, Duck, and Chicken Curry are always satisfying. I think Surin is the best option in Birmingham for Thai food. It is not the most authentic option, but I still think they do the best job of catering to their customers and delivering a variety of flavorful options for a moderate price. Their sushi selection is also impressive and quality for such a big restaurant. Spicy Coconut Soup with Tofu (5/5): I have been eating here for several years, and I always find myself ordering this soup. It is creamy and has just a hint of spiciness. Even those who don't enjoy spicy flavors will find this soup enjoyable. It can come with chicken, shrimp, beef, or tofu, and I almost always order it with tofu or chicken. Their chicken can be a little dry, but their tofu is always great. They give you plenty of mushrooms, which adds a great texture to the soup. Satay Chicken (5/5): Their Satay Chicken is some of the best I have had in the U.S. Unlike their entree chicken dishes, their Satay Chicken is very tender and perfectly grilled. It is the most flavorful of their chicken dishes, in my opinion. It is also impressively portioned for an appetizer that only costs $7.50. If you want the best chicken item on the menu, this Thai street food classic is a great option. Dipping them in the complementary peanut sauce gives them a salty and sweet boost that will never fail to disappoint! Rock and Roll (4/5): My girlfriend loves eel, and their sushi is by no means the best, but like most things at Surin, it is always reliable. They give you plenty of eel sauce, which may displease some sushi experts, but it is still delicious. Their sushi clearly caters to American tastes, but I still enjoy it despite the lack of authenticity. Pad See U (5/5): This is my favorite dish on the menu. This classic option of pan-fried flat noodles never fails to satisfy me. It is the quintessential Thai comfort food. Their noodles are oily and the dish is huge. It has two faults in my mind. It comes with hardly any chicken or vegetables, and the chicken is often drier than I would like. I have had the same experience with their beef. I would still recommend this dish, of course. If they gave you more vegetables and meats with it and did something to make them more tender, the dish would be exceptional. If you are choosing between this and their Pad Thai, I would always choose the Pad See Ew! As previously mentioned, I have been going to Surin for several years. Their service can be slow, especially if it is a busy time of day, but the food is consistently good. Furthermore, their dishes are flavorful and the prices are reasonable. Surin West is a restaurant that my family and I frequent. Everyone has their go to dish. My fave is the chicken noodle bowl. It's usually only available during lunch but I have asked for it during dinner and they made it for me. It is grilled chicken breast cut into strips atop noodles in a curry sauce with romaine lettuce. Not really sure of the purpose of the lettuce. The curry is more sweet than it is spicy. It's delicious and has a very light kick of spice. My husband always gets the Thai noodle. It's noodles with chicken and a couple of shrimp topped with peanuts. I enjoy this dish as well. And for the kids go to it's the Thai barbecued chicken. This is a half of a chicken that is fall off the bone tender served with a sweet and sour sauce and fried rice. A few other favorites are the Wing of Angel and the Kaboom maki roll. If you go during lunch you get a cup of their delicious coconut soup. I ordered the chicken masaman lunch with a bowl of wonton soup to go. When I started to eat the masaman, I was really disappointed to see that the avocado that they had cut up in the curry was rotten. I dug the pieces out and ate the rest of it, but i was kinda grossed out. Then, when I went to try my soup, the cabbage in it was covered in brown spots. Again, I had to dig old produce out to be able to eat it. Surin, if you read these, please check the produce to make sure it isn't spoiled. They have a great happy hour on M-F from 5p-7p which includes $3 appetizers, $4 glasses of wine and $15 bottles of wines. They also have a lunch menu with reduced prices. Additionally, their martini menu is amazing, and they have a fully stocked bar with all of your favorites. The atmosphere is very chill yet a little upscale, and the servers have all been great and well mannered. I really hope they never get rid of this item as it is my favorite, but over the years I keep watching it slide futher and further down the menu to last... like it's holding on fir dear life. The lunch specials are super reasonable (and come with that amazing coconut tofu soup), and portions are decent sized. Service can be a bit slow (especially around noon), so build in some wait time for a table. My one star subtraction is for parking. I've eaten meals at this restaurant for many years and my favorite is the roasted duck in a red curry sauce well today it was totally different while the duck was fine the curry sauce was very watery (thin) and on this dish that sauce is the "hook" so this visit was disappointing to say the least. I've always loved Surin for many reasons! Their chicken noodle bowl is my absolute favorite. I usually order a spicy tuna roll for a basic side to my entree. However, this time we just ordered sushi Togo and it was underwhelming. In addition, one of the rolls we ordered was substituted with a California roll, which was disappointing when we got home and realized it. Overall, the sushi that we received was just okay. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. One of the large rolls that we got had cream cheese in it and it just tasted like rice and cream cheese without much fish. Next time if I just want sushi, I'll get it from one of the more upscale sushi restaurants in town, since it would be the same price. Will be back to Surin, but won't be going for sushi. read more
